Welcome to the 2013-2014 Norton Center Student

Matinee Series. We want to provide clear information

about our K-12 student resources and how educators

can best take advantage of these offerings.

What has been selected for this season’s student matinee programs? Programs this season include a cross-section of visual art, dance, music and theatre to reach

students of all ages in order to provide meaningful arts experiences for young audiences. While

educators are encouraged to carefully read about each program in this brochure, here’s a snapshot

of some of the connections you can make in your classroom:

How do these programs help educators meet curriculum goals?The Norton Center provides a list of Kentucky State and National Standards that can be applied

to each performance or program, thus ensuring a worthwhile out-of-the-classroom experience

for all.

Are there activities the Norton Center can provide to help educatorsmake classroom connections?Our curriculum connections provide educator-developed lesson plans which will help to extend

the learning into the classroom before and after each event. Often, there are additional educational

resources provided by the artists themselves that will also be made available to educators. The

Norton Center Engagement Coordinator can also assist with ideas and planning in conjunction

with the matinee programs.

How can educators be kept informed throughout the year?The Norton Center offers a special resource that is free for all educators. Sign up to receive emails

and exclusive educator information by filling out the Keep Informed form on our website

and selecting the box Children / All Ages / Educational Shows or by calling the box office. This

DOES YOUR SCHOOL QUALIFY FOR FREE TICKETS AND/OR A BUS SUBSIDY?

Kentucky schools can apply for a FREE transportation subsidy to attend Norton Center studentmatinees through the Kentucky Arts Council

TranspARTation Grant Program. This grant provides KYstudents with quality arts experiences by providing transportation

funding to individual classrooms that apply. Grants are based on themileage from the school to the performance venue and the number

of buses necessary. Applications are reviewed quarterly. For help in applying for a TranspARTation Grant so that your school can

receive money to pay for transportation costs when attending a Norton Center performance, contact us at 859-238-5759 or

CURRICULUMCONNECTIONSBecause we understand the value of instructional time and can appreciate the difficulty and expense of

organizing field trips, we continually strive to ensure that our matinee series will be utilized as an

educational tool for our schools. Most importantly, we create Curriculum Connections related to

these shows and make them available online at www.nortoncenter.com/education at the beginning of

each season.

These state and national standard based lesson plans are streamlined to provide supplemental information

and activities that will enhance each of the visiting artists in our series. Developed to stimulate learning

in all areas of the curriculum through the arts, the activities involve students in high level thinking skills,

accommodate different learning styles and help draw conclusions across the curriculum.

CHARLES ROSS’ONE MAN LORDOF THE RINGS TM

. . . . friday . SEPTEMBER 6 . 2013 . 10:00AM . . . . .Last season Charles Ross performed his One Man Star Wars show to a sold out matinee

audience who cheered at the prospect of his return with a performance based on his other favorite

fantasy series: One Man Lord of the Rings™. This season, Ross will hurtle his way through the entire

Tolkien trilogy recreating the magical world of Middle-earth and all its enchanting characters. In this

inspired performance, he manages to complete Frodo’s epic journey from the Shire to the fire–armed

with nothing more than a pair of elbow pads and his outrageous imagination. With

riveting stage fights, harrowing rescues, and brilliant vocal sound effects, he

captures every character in a show that will leave students inspired to model

Ross’ mastery of the performance elements of drama in order to create their

very own one man show.

DA BAHIA

. . . . wednesday . OCTOBER 30 . 2013 . 10:00AM . . .Balé Folclórico Da Bahia transforms traditional Brazilian, African and Latin cultures into “a spectaculardisplay of color, movement, music and drama” (Chicago Sun-Times). With explosive drumming and

frenzied dancing in authentic costumes, the most popular folk dance company in Brazil performs a mix

of choreography from African and South American traditions, to include authentic dances like the Puxada

de Rede, Maculelé, Samba De Roda and the martial art form Capoeira. Educators have the opportunity

to lead students through a cultural portal to experience this electrifying and vibrant performance.

This performance is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnershipwith the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kentucky Arts Council

In this enthralling one-man show based on the non-fiction book of the same title, famed stage and film

actor Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch in the blockbuster film, Avatar) enters the personas of

several real American soldiers and sailors who fought in WWII, and the Korea and Vietnam Wars,

rendering firsthand accounts of the actions which resulted in each of them being awarded the nation’s

highest military accolade: the Congressional Medal of Honor. Between the nightly news, United States

foreign affairs, and every day history lessons, our next generation is no

BOOK ONE: TARGET EARTHA LIVE-ACTION GRAPHIC NOVEL

The Intergalactic Nemesis is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that mashes up radio

drama with a graphic novel. Three actors voice dozens of characters; one Foley artist

creates hundreds of sound effects; one keyboardist performs a score of thousands

(yes, thousands!) of notes; while on a two-story high screen they project more than

1,250 individual, full-color, hand-drawn, hi-res, blow-your-mind comic book images

to tell the story* visually: LIVE! Inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, and the

pulp serials of the 1930s, The Intergalactic Nemesis is a spectacle unlike any other and

for the kid in everyone.

. . . . friday . APRIL 18 . 2014 . 10:00AM . . . . . .Ten-time Grammy® Award winner Bobby McFerrin is one of the world's best-known vocal innovators

and improvisers, a world-renowned classical conductor and a passionate spokesman for music

education. His recordings have sold more than 20 million and established him as an ambassador

of both the classical and jazz worlds. Although McFerrin will always be known as the guy who sang

Don’t Worry, Be Happy, his latest project, “spirityouall,” which was influenced by the spirituals his father

sang, will encourage young audiences to participate while exploring cross genre music that has greatly

impacted our nation’s culture. At Bobby’s concerts, audiences witness the rarest of qualities, something

almost never found anymore in contemporary art: real-time invention. His wholly improvisational approach

to singing provides deep nourishment, something of sustaining value. He engages his audience, making

them a part of the creative process, taking them on an expedition.

FOR EDUCATORS

The Norton Center for the Arts is proud to take the next step in our mission to provide our partners in education

with the tools they need to fully integrate the arts into any classroom. In these full participation half-day

sessions enrolled teachers will receive hands on specialized training by juried Kentucky Arts Council

Teaching Artists and will return to school with a Professional Development Certificate of Completion as

well as applicable resources and ideas for future collaboration with arts integration techniques.

Visual Art in the English Curriculum with Carrie NeumayerThursday, February 6, 2014

5:00 – 8:00 PM, Norton Center for the Arts

Sequential art and cartooning are wonderful ways to combine visual art with literacy in the classroom.

Learn how to inspire your students to write, draw, and use their imaginations by creating stories in comic

book format. In this workshop, teachers of students of all ages will explore a variety of comic art and

then take part in activities concentrating on character development, theme, narrative, and drawing style.

Lesson plans and many additional classroom resources to use across the curriculum will be provided.

Carrie Neumayer is an artist, illustrator and musician with extensive teaching experience and a great

enthusiasm for working with students of all ages. She studied painting, printmaking and illustration at the

Kansas City Art Institute and received her Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in painting from the

Art Academy of Cincinnati. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education from the University

of Louisville and has eight years of experience teaching diverse student populations in Jefferson County

Public Schools. Carrie’s paintings have been exhibited at Cinderblock Gallery, Kin Ship Gallery, Spalding

University’s Huff Gallery, Carnegie Center for Art and other galleries in the Louisville area. Carrie’s

illustration work has been published in Louisville Magazine, The Louisville Paper and LEO Weekly. She is

a member of the Louisville Cartoonist Society and has published 11 autobiographical comic books.

HOW TO RESERVE AND PAY FOR TICKETS• A payment or a purchase order is required to reserve your seats for the program. • Payment by check, cash or credit card must be received at least two weeks before the performance date.• Please note that there are no exchanges or refunds except in the case of a school closing for inclement

weather OR if the Norton Center cancels the event.• The seats requested are blocked off for that corresponding school and therefore cannot be sold to

others. The school is then responsible for ALL seats reserved within that block, even if ALL students/chaperones do not attend.

• When registering for an event, please let us know if any special needs seating is required.

PARKING• After unloading students, bus drivers should park at Millennium Park, just a mile away from the

Norton Center. • Please contact the box office directly if your group will not be arriving by bus.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARRIVE• Performances start promptly at their scheduled times. Please try to arrive at least fifteen to thirty

minutes prior to the performance. • A representative from the school should stop by the registration table to check in and receive further

instructions.• After your group is assembled in the lobby, please wait for the ushers to escort you and your group to

your assigned seats. Ushers are also available to direct you to the restrooms and any other necessary location.

DRESS CODE• We encourage students to dress respectfully and appropriately when attending Norton Center performances.

DINING OPTIONS• The Centre College dining facility offers an all-you-can-eat buffet of a salad bar, grilled items, a deli, pizza,

home-styledishes, and a dessert bar including soft-serve ice cream. Reservations must be made in advance by calling SODEXO at 859-236-2744.

EXTENDING YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NORTON CENTER• Just ask! We can assist with special requests, provide campus tours, meal arrangements, and even

connect educators with other local arts organizations (including the Danville Community Arts Center andthe Dollhouse Museum).

A GUIDE TOTHEATRE ETIQUETTE

Please ensure that all cell phones are turned off. We expect all students to behave appropriately

without causing any disturbance to others around them. We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy

the performance. Anyone causing a disturbance will be asked to leave the theater.

Please arrive at the theater 15-30 minutes before the start of the performance, allowing

enough time for trips to the restroom. Latecomers disturb the other students and teachers

around them and will be seated during a suitable break in the program at the usher’s discretion.

Please remain in your seats during the performance – use the restroom before the show.

No food or drink is allowed in the theatre at any time.

The Norton Center staff members work hard to keep the theatre clean and in good condition for

all patrons. Please do not put your feet on the seats and be sure to keep your personal belongings

stored underneath your own seat during a performance.

Please be quiet during the performance, but feel free to laugh, applaud and show your appreciation

for the performer’s hard work on stage when appropriate during the show.

Please remain in your seat until the curtain call is over and the house lights have come up.

Please observe the rules of common courtesy: act responsibly in the restroom lines and Norton

Center lobby, and respect the theatre-going experience of everyone around you.

No cameras or recording devices of any kind are permitted. Pictures and recordings are

prohibited by union regulations and copyright laws.
