In 1959, two young men with an idea , a goal, and a pragmatic philosophy to encompass it all, broke away

from their career in traditional college to create a new educational entity.

The Northwood Idea became a reality when Dr.

R. Gary Stauffer and Dr. Arthur E. Turner enrolled 100

students, using a 19th century mansion as a school build-

ing, a small amount of money for operating expenses,

and a large amount of determination.

Today, the Northwood Idea of incorporating the

teachings of the American free enterprise system into

college classrooms is an unquestionable success.

There are campuses in Midland, Michigan, Cedar

Hill, Texas and West Palm Beach, Florida, as well as extension centers across the United States and abroad. There

is also the Margaret Chase Smith Library Center in Skowhegan, Maine, in addition to continuing education pro-

grams across the United States and Canada, and a growing University College program.

Out in simplest terms, Northwood University is a private, tax-exempt, independent, accredited, coeducation-

al, business and management oriented university actively allied

to both business and the arts.

Northwood translates its philosophy into practical, use-

ful curriculums that are designed to prepare students for the re-

alities of the working world. Northwood brings the business

world into the classroom. Instructors of business are successful

career professionals who have chosen to direct their business

tales towards the preparation of those about to enter the work-

ing world.

The 2013-14 edition of the Northwood University Seahawks will feature a changing of the guard, literally, as a senior-laden squad based

around players who re-wrote the Northwood record books has departed. After back-to-back appearances in the NAIA Division II National

Championship Final Four, Northwood posted their most successful regular season in program history, amassing thirty wins, a Sun Confer-

ence regular season championship, and a seventh consecutive appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. The Seahawks were stunned

in the first round, falling to tournament host College of the Ozarks, 57-49.

“As the season ended last year, we obviously were disappointed,” said Northwood Head Coach Rollie Massimino. “We had a great regular

season, but when you get into national competition it becomes extremely competitive. We ran into a buzzsaw playing the host team, and

they did a wonderful job playing against us.”

Northwood had eight players depart via graduation, including a nucleus of veterans that helped guide the Seahawks to a 97-12 record over

the last three seasons.

Guard Tyrone Davis finished his four-year career as Northwood as the all-time leader in assists (812), steals (319), and games played

(137). Ty set the Northwood single game assists mark with 15 against Trinity on November 10 th, 2012. Davis was a two-time NAIA All-

American with a Second Team selection as a senior, along with an All-Sun Conference First Team and All-Sun Conference Defensive

Team designations.

Forward Patrick Horstmann, a four-year player, became the first player in Northwood history to record 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds.

The Seahawks second-leading scorer all-time, Horstmann set the single-season rebounding mark for Northwood with 361 boards as a soph-

omore, and is one of three players in program history to record 20 rebounds in a game. Patrick was chosen as an NAIA All-American Third

Team selection following his sophomore season, and took home The Sun Conference Freshman of the Year award in 2009-2010.

Forward Thierno Agne wrapped up his four-year run at Northwood as the all-time leading three-point shooter, connecting on 42.6 percent

of his attempts, while sinking an all-time high 246 three-pointers. Agne became the seventh member of the Seahawks 1,000-point club

during the 2012-13 season, and finished as the fourth-leading scorer in program history with 1,201 points, while grabbing 565 rebounds,

third-most all-time.

“Our four-year seniors certainly rose to a very special part of this program, winning 97 games in three years is a feat that not many basket-

ball programs in the country can equal and for that, I’m very, very proud of that group. Winning is important, but the kinds of degrees they

got, three of which were in the MBA program, and the others receiving degrees puts them in the special position as student-athletes.”

In his lone year with the Seahawks, guard Ra’Shad James left his mark on the Seahawks program. James became the second player in

Northwood program history to be recognized as the NAIA Division II National Player of the Year, averaging 23 points and six rebounds a

game, while shooting 55 percent from the floor. James set the single-game scoring mark for the Seahawks with 39 points against Carthage

on December 17th, 2012, and finished with the third-highest scoring output of any Seahawk player with 736 points in 32 games. Ra’Shad

collected plenty of hardware during the 2012-13 season including NAIA All-American First Team, The Sun Conference Player of the

Year, All-Sun Conference First Team, NAIA National Player of the Week, and The Sun Conference Player of the Week on five occasions.

Rounding out the departed starting five for the Seahawks was Dan O’Keefe, a fellow one-year player for Northwood. O’Keefe started 32

games during his senior season, averaging 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 30.7 minutes per game. Dan led the Seahawks in free throw per-

centage, making 84 percent of his attempts, and blocks with 33.

Northwood will be returning four players from the 2012-13 squad, providing a veteran presence to a group of fresh faces. Senior forward

Jake Lockhart appeared in 26 games for the Seahawks after missing games early in the season with an injury. Lockhart is a factor on the

glass, grabbing 5.3 rebounds with 4.3 points in 13 minutes per game. Joining Lockhart, will be three second-year players in seniors Jerrod

Owens and Texas Derland, and sophomore Kevin McDuffie. Owens appeared in 21 games for the Seahawks, averaging two points in nine

minutes, while Derland appeared in 24 games, contributing three points and two rebounds in nearly nine minutes of play. McDuffie ap-

peared in 25 games and set a freshman scoring high with 26 points against DeVry University on November 26 th, 2012.

“Jake is a much improved senior who has created outstanding leadership on the team,” stated Massimino. “Jerrod has come a long way in

our program and is vying for valuable playing time this season, and Texas is another senior who is projecting terrific leadership to the

younger players. Freshman are made to be sophomores, and Kevin has done a good job trying to lead and teach as we go.”

Massimino, newly minted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, and his staff have amassed a crop of ten players to fill the

holes left by a departed starting five. A mix of junior college and NCAA transfers, along with energetic freshmen straight out of high

school, hope to guide the Seahawks to their eighth straight NAIA National Tournament appearance, and a fourth consecutive Sun Confer-

ence regular season title.

Page 11: 2013-14 Northwood (Fla.) Men's Basketball Media Guide

2013-14 NORTHWOOD BASKETBALL

2013 — 2014 NORTHWOOD MEN’S BASKETBALL

“Our staff did a terrific job of recruiting a new group, which wasn’t easy. Everyone has been great starting out. The key part about this

year’s program is ‘buying in’ and developing the chemistry it takes, as quickly as possible, to develop leaders and teammates,” continued

Massimino.

The Seahawks continue infused a spark of youth talent to incorporate into their veteran foundation. Freshmen Josh Doughty, Chris Lee

and DeVonte’ Allen look to provide that spark, along with a depth in talent that could prove to be instrumental when called upon. After

striking pay dirt with Ra’Shad James last season, Northwood returned to the Lower Hudson region of New York and signed Josh Doughty.

Doughty is an electric playmaker joining the Seahawks after starting three seasons as point guard for Mount Vernon High School in Mount

Vernon, N.Y. The 5-foot-10 guard was a part of two state championship teams at Mount Vernon, being named a first-team All-Star by The

Journal News and a first-team Lower Hudson selection by the Lower Hudson Basketball Coaches Association after his senior season

where he averaged a team-high 13.6 points a game, five assists, and four steals while connecting on a team-high 44 3-point attempts. Lee,

a 6-foot-6 forward, comes to Northwood after finishing a year of prep ball at Bridgton Academy, one of the top prep basketball programs

in the nation. Lee ranks as one of the top 15 basketball players coming out of the state of Maine. Allen, a member of a military family,

played his prep basketball at Ramstein in Germany, where he earned three varsity letters in basketball along with consecutive All-Region

and All-Europe team selections.

“We were lucky to recruit a group of outstanding freshmen that will give us a terrific addition to this program over a four-year period,”

echoed Massimino. “Josh is a freshman and a very talented player who’s going to make some freshman mistakes as we grow. Chris [Lee]

is a very strong player that can go get the ball whenever he wants, and DeVonte’ is an Army child from Germany who can shoot the ball

well from deep.”

Junior Fred Mattison transfers to Northwood after a successful season at NJCAA-power Mott Community College. Mattison was recog-

nized as the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Eastern Conference Player of the Year following his sopho-

more campaign where he averaged 18.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game, leading Mott to their third consecutive

NJCAA National Tournament berth. Fred earned MCCAA All-Regional honors, along with a First Team All-Conference selection.

Junior Chris Solomon joins the Seahawks after one season at NJCAA Division II Phoenix College. Solomon was outstanding during his

sophomore season, averaging 22.2 points a game, while shooting 45 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range. Solomon

was chosen as a 2012-13 NJCAA First Team All-American after leading Phoenix College to the Division II National Tournament. Solo-

mon registered 3.2 rebounds per game with nearly two assists, shot 77 percent from the free-throw line and connected on 87 three-pointers

during the season. Solomon was recognized as the NJCAA Region I Player of the Year.

“The staff did a tremendous group of putting together our transfer group,” said Massimino. “These were players who were high priority in

the recruiting procedures and my assistants were able to recruit them over many Division I schools. Fred is an outstanding athlete who can

play inside or outside and Chris [Solomon] is an outstanding shooter who comes to us all the way from California.”

A pair of NCAA Division I transfers have signed on with the Seahawks during the offseason. Senior Danny Nieman, who will redshirt the

2013-14 season, joins the Seahawks after three seasons at Division I Coastal Carolina University. As a junior, Nieman started 13 of 20

games, tallying 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and two assists per game. Junior Stephon Smith heads to Northwood after two seasons at Division

I San Jose State. Smith appeared in 28 games during his sophomore season, totaling 80 points, 79 rebounds, 10 assists and 8 blocks.

“Stephon plays very well around the basket and his defensive ability will be shown throughout the year, while Danny is redshirting this

season, but will provide guidance and outstanding vocal leadership from the bench.”

Junior Trace Lanson joins the Seahawks after two seasons at NCAA Division III Mitchell College. Last season, Trace appeared in 17

games off the bench for the Mariners, contributing 6.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 15 minutes of play. Lanson ranked 10 th in the New Eng-

land Collegiate Conference in three-point percentage, connecting on 37 percent of his attempts on the season. Junior Julian Smith will

serve as the elder statesman of the Seahawks, coming to West Palm Beach after serving four years serving in the Army. While serving our

country, Julian was a member of the All-Army Team. Prior to joining the military, Smith played his prep basketball at Waterbury High

School. Junior Ian Umpierre rounds out the new additions, joining the Seahawks after playing at Columbia Greene Community College.

“Trace is a Floridian who’s comes back home and brings a good shooting touch to the team. Julian was a real find. He’s working really

hard to learn our system, and Ian is a confident individual, who’s learning our point guard position and has the ability to make good deci-

sions on the floor.”

The Seahawks open their 2013-14 season with a pair of exhibition matches against NCAA Division I opponents, battling Fordham on No-

vember 1st and Penn State on November 3rd. Northwood kicks off the regular season against Clearwater Christian on November 8th when

the Seahawks host the first annual Dick Versace Tip-Off Tournament at the Countess de Hoernle Student Life Center.

Renowned as one of the best coaching minds in America, Coach Rollie Mas-

simino enters his eighth season as head coach of the Northwood University men’s bas-

ketball team. After leading his 2012-13 team to the NAIA National Championships for

the seventh consecutive season. After building the program from scratch in 2006, Mas-

simino has transformed Northwood basketball into a national powerhouse in the NAIA.

He has compiled an outstanding record of 201 wins and 41 losses (.830) in the pro-

gram’s short history. Massimino, best known for guiding the Villanova Wildcats to the

1985 NCAA Championship, has amassed 717 wins in his 37 seasons as a college bas-

ketball head coach. Following the 2012-13 season, Massimino was elected to the Na-

tional Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, and will be enshrined in November 2013.

On December 29th, 2012, Coach Massimino became the 39th coach to record

700 career wins, and became just the third coach in college basketball history to reach

the 700-win plateau and win an NCAA National Championship during their coaching

career.

Noted for his "Family Style" coaching, Massimino is considered to be one of the greatest college coaches of all time.

He motivates his players with the belief that “Enthusiasm is Contagious!” That message reflects Coach Massimino’s view of

life. By giving 100 percent, on and off the court, those around you can’t help but believe and become inspired. In Massimino’s

case, he instills enthusiasm into those around him by seemingly giving 110 percent - all the time. He motivates through his

ceaseless energy while his enthusiasm for life and the game of basketball radiates onto to his players.

Over the years, Massimino has racked up numerous awards. In 1985, he was tabbed National Coach of the Year by

both MacGregor Sporting Goods and Playboy magazine while in 1982 he earned Big East Coach of the Year accolades, just

one of eight times he was honored on a league basis in the NCAA. In 2011 he was named the NAIA National Coach of the

Year and earned the Rawlings National Coach of the Year in 2012.

Massimino took his Villanova program to the top in 1985, when the Wildcats pounced on heavily-favored

Georgetown to take the NCAA Championship on April 1. During his tenure at Villanova, the Wildcats earned 16 postseason

tournament berths with 11 being in the NCAA Tournament. In Villanova’s 12 seasons of Big East play under Massimino, his

squads earned two regular-season titles, advanced to the conference championship game three times and compiled a 110-80

(.578) regular-season record.

Massimino began his coaching career in 1956 after graduating from the University of Vermont where he played varsi-

ty basketball for three years. His first three seasons he served as an assistant coach at Cranford (NJ) High school before secur-

ing his first head coaching job at Hillside (NJ) High School, his prep alma mater, in 1959. From there he moved to Lexington

(MA) High School in 1963 where he led one squad to a state championship and another to a 20-1 record.

In 10 seasons as a high school coach, Massimino compiled a 160-61 record. He debuted at the collegiate coaching lev-

el in 1969 as the head coach at the State University of New York (SUNY)-Stony Brook. His first team went 19-6, won the

conference championship and earned a berth in the NCAA small college tournament. Massimino’s next step was an assistant’s

position at the University of Pennsylvania under the late Chuck Daly, known for winning back-to-back NBA championships

with the Detroit Pistons in 1989 and 1990. In March 1973, Massimino left Penn to succeed Jack Kraft as the head coach at

Villanova. Massimino has a master’s degree equivalent in health and physical education from Rutgers University (1959) and a

bachelor’s degree from Vermont (1956) in education. Massimino and his wife Mary Jane have five children - Tom, Lee Ann,

Michele, Roland (R.C.) and Andrew - as well as 16 grandchildren.

Dr. Duncan served as president of Bethany College (later Betha-

ny University) in Santa Cruz, California, for five years. Duncan assumed

his duties at this private, church-related institution in a time of financial

uncertainty and declining enrollments. During his tenure, student enroll-

ment grew from fewer than 495 students to over 720 students and the

college began its first master's program and enlarged its innovative pro-

grams to reach non-traditional students. Duncan successfully balanced

budgets by working closely with the board of trustees, fellow adminis-

trators, and faculty -- resulting in a surplus to the college.

Duncan voluntarily left this position in 1997 to pursue his PhD.

in higher education administration at the University of Arizona. One

year later his wife, Carol, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She

passed away in 2001 which left him with two young children to raise.

The following year he married his current wife, Rita, whose husband had

passed away with cancer in 2000, leaving her with a young child. Now

with the responsibilities of having a new wife and three young children,

Duncan decided it was best for his new family if he remained closer to

home while completing his PhD. dissertation, studying for Anglican or-

dination, and working in pastoral ministry for several years in the Saint

Louis area. As his older children are moving into adulthood, he felt now was a better time to return to a campus

leadership position.

He became a visiting professor at Ohio University in 2007 teaching courses which focused on higher educa-

tion. Duncan also served on PhD. dissertation committees, advised master's students on their M.Ed papers and con-

ducted independent and collaborative research. While at Ohio University he published two papers for the Center of

Higher Education.

From 1985-1992 Duncan worked for the

state of Missouri as an assistant to Governor John

Ashcroft in education and policy management as

well as for the department of economic development

as a division director of professional registration.

Prior to his government employment, he was an as-

sistant professor of government and public admin-

istration at Evangel College (now Evangel Universi-

ty) for several years.

Duncan earned his PhD. in higher education

from the University of Arizona in 2005; an M.A. in

political science from the University of Missouri-

Columbia in 1979; his B.A. in government from

Evangel College in 1975; and course of study in

preparation for Anglican ordination at the Anglican Mission in the Americas in South Carolina. For the past 12

years he has remained active as a chaplain and pastor in several religious communities.

Prior to joining NU Davidson served as Assistant Director of Athletics for Internal Operations at Daven-

port University. His responsibilities included oversight of non-varsity programs, assistance in overall budget and

process development, and administration of all game day operations, customer relations, and marketing and ticket

sales. He also served as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach for five years and Assistant Director of the student cen-

ter where he was in charge of game day operations, event management, and development of intramurals.

In his first year at Northwood, Davidson has expanded the varsity

athletics program from 11 teams to 17 with the additions of Men’s 7 Wom-

en’s Track and Field, Men’s & Women’s Cross Country, Competitive

Cheerleading and Competitive Dance.

A graduate of Northwood University Michigan, Davidson earned

his associate degree in Banking and Finance and bachelor's degree in Mar-

keting and Management. He then coached two years at Northwood while

obtaining his master of business administration (MBA) degree in Integrat-

ed Management.

During his playing time at Northwood, Davidson was a three-point

specialist on the basketball team, graduating second all-time in three-

pointers and was a member of the school's first ever national tournament

team.

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, he graduated from Catho-

lic Central High School. He and his wife Stephanie have three children,

Gianna, Jonathan (Jack)., and Liam.
