Im excited to be back and to help be a leader on this team, Pickens said in Septem-ber. I think we can do some good things this season, and Im ready to do what it takes to give one more season. As a junior in 2012-13, Pickens led the Bears in rebound-ing average (4.7) while playing in 30 of 33 games, starting 19 times and scoring 6.1 points per game. Gulley suffered a torn ACL during a summer league game in 2012 and missed the entire 2012-13 season. His future seemed uncertain, but he has progressed well and continues to make preseason progress to his previous form. In 2011-12, Gulley fi nished second on the club in rebound-ing (5.8), fi rst in steals (34) and fourth in scoring (10.4). He was a two-time MVC Newcomer of the Week, ranked 10th in the MVC in FG percentage (.498) and 11th in rebounding (5.8). His ability to fi nish around the rim and collect caroms is a big boost for an MSU club that only out-rebounded 10 opponents all last season. Its going to be important that were a better offensive team, and theres not doubt that Jarmar (Gulley) helps in that area, Lusk said. He has worked on his 3-point stroke, but he also helps on the offensive glass because hes got a nose for the ball and hes a good rebounder. The third-year head coach also said one of the keys to meeting this years challenging schedule will be providing a boost to the clubs scoring, which fi nished at just 59.6 points per game last season. I think were going to try to be more aggressive because we have more pieces. I think we have better offensive play-

Season Outlook Missouri State starts the 2013-14 season with three things it desperately needed a year ago: depth, size and experience. As MSU head coach Paul Lusk enters his third season in Springfi eld, he hopes upgrading these three areas will make the difference in the clubs drive to return to post-season play. Missouri Valley Conference freshman of the year Marcus Marshall (So., St. Paul, Minn.) headlines the cast of return-ers after he broke the programs freshman scoring record last year and averaged 11.5 points per night. Jarmar Gulley (Sr., Beaumont, Texas) returns after spending last season recovering from a knee injury. Gulley averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a junior in 2011-12 and is a key piece of the puzzle this winter, particularly with his rebounding skills. Other returning starters are Christian Kirk (Jr., Springfi eld, Mo.) who averaged 10.6 points over the last eight games as a sophomore and fi nished 10th in the league in fi eld goal percentage (.522); Keith Pickens (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) who came out of retirement for his senior season after registering 6.1 points and 4.7 boards in limited action last year; and Dorrian Williams (So., Oklahoma City, Okla.) who started 18 games and dished out 56 assists as a redshirt freshman a year ago. In all, the Bears have nine returning lettermen, a cast of fi ve talented newcomers -- including transfers Emmanuel Addo (Sr., F, Toronto, Canada) and Ron Mvouika (Jr., G/F, Paris, France) - and added size and depth to position them-selves as contenders once again in The Valley. Weve got a lot of working parts, and we need to see what parts work well together and most imporantly see what parts dont work together, Lusk said.

Backcourt Ballers Included in Lusks list of nine returning lettermen is a pair of pleasant surprises in combo player Keith Pickens and small forward Jarmar Gulley. Pickens injury-plagued career appeared to be over when the Bears left St. Louis after the 2013 MVC Tournament. But over the summer, his chronic soreness and knee pain turned a corner, and Pickens announced he was ready to give his senior season a shot.

ers that have joined the program, and I think the guys who have been in the program have worked on their game. At point guard, the Bears will have plenty of depth with Marcus Marshall emerging as the preeminent leader any time hes on the fl oor. The clubs top returning scorer sees the fl oor well, can create off the dribble and has range beyond the 3-point arc. The Preseason All-MVC selection has expanded his game even more over the off-season and is evolving as a complete all-around guard which gives Lusk and his staff a number of combination options. Bears fans are excited about the potential of newcomer

Devon Thomas (Fr., Silver Spring, Md.) who is lightning-fast with the ball, can run the fl oor and has a great mindset for defense. Hell get his opportunities as a true freshman to perform at point, and his skill set may be the trump card the Bears are looking for in this freshman class.

Dorrian Williams started 18 games last year, primarily working the point, and is in his third year in the program. He also proved to be a legitimate outside threat at times, knock-ing down 19 3-pointers and showing more confi dence as the season progressed. Before an injury sidelined him for the last three games of the year, he had 8 points in the late-sea-son BracketBusters win at Eastern Michigan, which was part of a great late-season surge for the Oklahoma City native. Junior college transfer Ron Mvouika (Jr., Paris, France) brings a legitimate scoring threat to the arsenal when hes on the fl oor. He averaged 19.3 points and 8.2 rebounds at Sheridan (Wyo.) College last year, earned NJCAA All-Region IX fi rst-team honors and led the region in scoring. His com-prehension of the Bears offensive and defensive sets will grow as the season progresses, but he has the potential to impact the offense right away, and his passion to win is an intangible that should serve the team well. One of the most talented shooters to ever come out of the Ozarks, Austin Ruder (Fr., G, Nixa, Mo.) gives the Bears a recipe for instant offense when hes on the fl oor. The sharp shooter can also run the fl oor, is physically tough and makes his free throws. On signing day last November, Lusk called Ruders shot college ready with Ruders quick release and consistent approach. The Bears will need to give the fresh-man time to grow, but it appears his contribution meter is already running. Senior Nathan Scheer (G/F, Washington, Mo.) is the most seasoned athlete on this years team. With 100 college games and nearly 2,000 minutes under his belt, hell take on a leadership role only a senior can truly appreciate. Scheer does the small things every championship team needs. He dives for loose balls, takes charges, understands the sets, and can knock down 3-pointers. He has earned Valley postseason awards every season, including MVC All-Bench Team and Scholar-Athlete fi rst-team distinction last season, and his willingness to take on a variety of roles will make him a priceless commodity this winter. Sophomore Michael Simpson (G/F, Spring, Texas) is another combo player who has the ability to make shots from the perimeter and contribute off the bench. His leaping and rebounding skills are understated, and the extra time he spent in the gym this summer will help him become a more rounded and consistent contributor.

Front Court Phenoms The addition of Northern Colorado transfer Emmanuel Addo (Sr., F, Toronto, Canada) and freshman Tyler Mc-Cullough (C, Fayetteville, Ark.) has given Missouri State needed size, physicality and scoring potential in the front court. Thats important for several reasons, the most obvious Keith PickensKeith Pickens

of which is the fi nding a remedy for the rebounding defi cit the club suffered through last season in which MSU out-rebounded just 10 foes. Addos best season at Northern Colorado saw him aver-age 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game off the bench as a sophomore in 2011-12. Hell take most of his reps at the power forward spot for the Bears this winter, although he was primarily a center at UNC. That versatility, experience, physical presence and leadership ability will be key pieces for this years Missouri State club. McCullough is more of a traditional center who has a scorers mentality. He also has a nose for the ball and can rebound in traffi c. Lusk and staff are excited about the long-term potential of the true freshman who has proven to be very teachable and is progressing to be an immediate contributor this season.

Christian Kirk (Jr., F, Springfi eld, Mo.) headlines the cast of three returning front court players for Missouri State. With 39 career starts under his belt during his fi rst two college seasons, Kirk has proven his ability to be a go-to man in the starting lineup, more than doubling his point production be-tween his freshman and sophomore seasons, while driving up his rebound average in the process. Likewise, after jump-ing center 22 times early in his career, he will now settle into

    Christian KirkChristian Kirk

a more comfortable role at the 4 spot this season. For his junior season, he has added confi dence, range and size to his solid set of skills, and when necessary, he can provide relief in the low post, making him even more valuable to the clubs prospectus.

Gavin Thurman (So., F, Wichita, Kan.) is another power forward option for the Bears this winter. Like classmate Marcus Mar-shall, Thurman showed fl ashes of greatness as a true freshman in 2012-13. He had four games in which he scored 18 points or more, including a memorable 21-point effort against his hometown Shockers at JQH Arena last January. His ability to rise over defenders and knock down jump shots makes him a tough matchup for most teams, but what could make Thurman even more special this season is his added size and rebounding skills. He came out of the blocks in the preseason grabbing more rebounds and being more physical around the rim, which could be the formula for Thurman earning more minutes and taking the next step in his career. When Coach Lusk brought in former SIU star Brad Korn as his third assistant coach last spring, Korn made an im-mediate impact on MSUs low post where he has a knack for molding young players. Bruce Marshall (So., C, Fayette, Mo.) has benefi tted more than anyone with that addition, showing more aggressive tendencies on both ends of the fl oor in the preseason. Marshalls soft jump shot is still his bread and butter, but if he can continue to evolve defensively and on the boards, his evolution into a complete college player will continue to progress.

Challenging Slate The Bears will host 18 games at JQH Arena this winter, take on defending NCAA champion Louisville, renew a long-standing in-state rivalry, and participate in the competitive Corpus Christi Challenge. Highlighting the non-conference schedule is a Dec. 17 trip to Louisville for a nationally-televised game on ESPN2 against the Cardinals at the KFC Yum! Center. The Bears will also play a pair of nationally-televised games as part of the inaugural Corpus Christi Challenge, which kicks off with a pair of home games Nov. 24 (Hampton) and Nov. 26 (Lib-

erty) before MSU plays Texas A&M on Nov. 29 in a neutral-site game that will air on CBS Sports Net. Missouri State will play either Virginia or SMU the fol-lowing night, which will also be televised on CBS Sports Net. Missouri State will also host South-east Missouri State on Dec. 29 as its fi nal non-conference test before Valley play begins Jan. 2. The visit from the Redhawks will renew the Bears longest rivalry in what will be the 143rd meeting between the schools, dating back to 1910. I think our non-conference schedule will provide us with some challenges and great opponents, Lusk said. Its a good balance of teams that will prepare us for the Valley schedule. Im excited about the upcoming season. The regular-season opener will be Nov. 8 at Old Dominion

in a BracketBusters return game from two years ago, and the regular-season home opener will be Nov. 16 against regional rival Tulsa. The Bears will also host Grambling (Nov. 20), Cameron

(Dec. 4) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 21) in the non-conference portion of their schedule and will travel to Oral Roberts (Dec. 13). Lusks squad will open its 18-game Missouri Valley Conference schedule on Jan. 2 with a visit from Illinois State. The Bears will also host Wichita State early in the season with a game against the 2013 Final Four club on Jan. 11. In February, Missouri State will be at home fi ve times with conference visits from Bradley (Feb. 1), Drake (Feb. 12), Northern Iowa (Feb. 15), Indiana State (Feb. 22) and league newcomer Loyola Chicago (Feb. 25). March will see the Bears close out the regular season at Wichita State (March 1) before the MVC Tourna-ment in St. Louis, March 6-9. As a whole, the teams schedule will help push the Bears to prepare for the future and get them ready for a postseason run this March.

What You Need to KnowAfter tearing the ACL in his right knee on July 11, 2012 during a summer-league game, Gulley missed the entire 2012-13 season. His return is pivotal for the Bears after he averaged 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a 25-game starter two years ago.

Quoting Coach LuskHes a big wing who is a very physical player. Hes a good rebounder, and we are excited to have him back. Hes done a nice job this summer getting ready to return to full-contact work.
