“Each of us at HACC has the potential every day to positively impact the lives of hundreds of students. But we must meet them where they are and help them successfully navigate times of change and uncertainty – utilizing what works best for them. And what could be more rewarding? Our students are the hope for tomorrow.”

John J. “Ski” Sygielski, Ed.D., HACC president

Greetings! For the first time, HACC and the HACC Foundation present a combined annual report for fiscal year 2013-14. Inside you will read about employees, donors and others in the community who are changing the lives of HACC students throughout our geographic footprint. You will also find financial statements with links to more data available through our website. I am fortunate to be with HACC at such a historic time. We began HACC’s 50th year by celebrating our history, successes and growth from a single campus to a five-campus institution serving 10 counties in Pennsylvania plus students all over the world. As part of our celebration, students received tuition giveaways made possible by generous contributions by donors during my journey to all the campuses in Dr. Ski’s Miles of Gratitude – Tour de HACC last April. Special anniversary events, such as the historical panel discussion and lectures, brought visitors to our campuses to experience all that HACC has to offer. This report also recognizes those who support HACC with their generous contributions and acknowledges their investment in the vitality of our region’s workforce.I hope that you enjoy the report and the chance to reflect on the results of the hard work of so many people. Stay tuned! There are more incredible things to come!

Happy Birthday, HACC!

HACC kicked off its 50th anniversary in February 2014 with birthday parties at each of its five campuses. From homemade cupcakes prepared by HACC’s culinary students and presentations of proclamations to speeches from past alumni and current students, each campus put a unique twist on the birthday parties.

Chef Autumn Patti, culinary instructor, left; David T. Mills III, culinary student; and Chef Elizabeth Robison, pastry instructor; along with other culinary arts students created 1,500 special 50th anniversary cupcakes for the birthday parties.

Fond Memories and Hopeful Visions: HACC’s Past, Present and Future

In 2014, HACC celebrated its 50th year of providing access and academic excellence to Central Pennsylvania’s communities. From its revolutionary beginning in 1964 until today, HACC has served as a beacon for those who thought they wouldn’t be able to attend college, whether because they believed they couldn’t afford to attend or they were afraid they wouldn’t be accepted. As HACC President John J. “Ski” Sygielski, Ed.D., often says, HACC and its community college brethren throughout the nation are the Ellis Island of higher education. HACC changes lives.

For 50 years, HACC has offered educational excellence to those whom might not otherwise have been able to attend college and achieve their dreams. Oh, and also Jane Fonda and streaking football teams…just like those big four-year institutions. Many who attended HACC in the early ’70s fondly remember Fonda’s visit to HACC’s Harrisburg Campus and the day that HACC’s football team streaked across the quad in front of the Cooper Center.

Beginning in spring 2014, HACC began to document the experiences of alumni, faculty, staff and board members who have been part of the HACC family for decades. Their stories poignantly remind us why we are here and why we need to ensure that the institution

remains vibrant and vital for the next 50 years and beyond.

In a panel discussion held in April 2014, five current and former faculty members with decades of experience at HACC shared their memories of the College. The panel included Trum Simmons, emeritus professor of English and communications; Yvonne Milspaw, senior professor of English and humanities; Jim Terry, emeritus professor of government and politics; Linda Myers, professor of mathematics; and Ron Rebuck, director of nursing.

When asked, “why HACC?”, they all had the same answer: “We love teaching.” One of the special things about HACC is that students have direct access to the faculty. Few classes have more than 26 students and many faculty linger in the classroom long after the formal lecture has ended. HACC faculty relishes the opportunity to interact with students. They enjoy being in the classroom and most of all, they love seeing the spark when a student “gets it.” Many of the faculty interviewed for the 50th Anniversary story bank thought they might just work at HACC for a few years to get a start and move on, but ended up staying for their entire careers.

When asked about their vision for HACC’s future, panel members agreed they hope to see HACC maintain its solid liberal arts core. Students need a broad-based education that will prepare them for lifelong learning and provide them with the critical thinking skills they need to be successful. HACC’s liberal arts core helps students to understand the world around them, evaluate data and make good judgments, whether personal, career or civic in nature. The liberal arts serve as a solid base on which to build skills throughout a lifetime. The panel agreed that HACC faculty doesn’t teach our students what to think; they teach them how to think.

Pete Wambach, a member of HACC’s first class, fondly remembers the College as “a godsend.” His professors had a great impact on him. As a current member of the HACC Board of Trustees, Wambach, a retired state legislator, is delighted to see first-generation students like him graduate. As a high-school honor student and page boy in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Wambach saw then-Gov. Bill Scranton sign the community college bill and knew immediately this was his pathway to a college degree.

Joseph Porter, also a member of HACC’s first class and a first-generation college student, didn’t believe he could afford college. For Porter, HACC’s professors made the difference by turning his life around. Their genuine concern for students helped those like him who didn’t know how to study. Porter is a lifelong learner who returned to HACC after retiring to learn to be a master gardener.

Judy Darr, a HACC alumna and laboratory management adjunct faculty member, knew that HACC offered her an opportunity to attend the program she wanted at a great price and close to home. Darr remembers that HACC faculty has a way of not assuming that everyone knows the basics and helped her to write better than most of her peers who had begun their careers at four-year institutions. Darr’s 41-year career is a result of the high-quality training she received at HACC. In her current position with Pinnacle Health, Darr recruits students directly from HACC’s medical laboratory technician program, a testament to its lasting impact and continued quality.

James Schadewald, a HACC alumnus and assistant professor of psychology, recalls that HACC really set him up for the future by realizing that he is intelligent and just didn’t know how to learn. After success at HACC, Schadewald knows not only how to learn, but also to help students of all abilities learn to succeed.

HACC’s faculty say that they are here for the students…this sentiment is confirmed by the testament from alumni who have made HACC a permanent part of their lives. They are here working in the community today because their professors at HACC have always been devoted to their success. Faculty like Greg Hess, emeritus professor of counseling, who served the College for 43 years, wanted to be part of HACC because they see it as a vocation, not just a job. HACC offers meaning – for students, faculty, staff and community volunteers alike. 11

50th anniversary year begins new marketing campaignYOURS branding and marketing campaign

In February 2014, HACC launched the new brand to the public, and the College began implementing it into materials, content and more in March 2014.

On April 7, 2014, the marketing campaign launched to engage prospective students and point them to HACC to enroll. The campaign consisted of advertising, including:• 15-second and 30-second television commercials on cable networks (Discovery

channel, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) and the History channel). They’re available on YouTube.

• Billboards in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York• Newspaper advertising • Radio advertising (WINK 104.1, WGTY 107.7, WLAN FM, Pandora)• Digital and social media (Facebook, YouTube, AdWords)

Mailings to support the advertising, included:

Postcard mailings to current students, individuals who attended HACC but left without completing, high school students, parents of high school students and individuals who have at least 45 credits and are close to graduation

To support the direct mail, HACC distributed email blasts to reinforce and support the messaging on the postcards.

Materials were developed for the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management to use when speaking to prospective students (examples include a viewbook, financial aid brochure and transfer brochure).

Billboards, postcards, email blasts, digital and social media also were used to promote the one-stop events in April and June at each campus. One-stop events enable prospective students to apply to HACC and enroll in classes in one visit.

Branded templates were made available for employees and students to use for their internal communications.

Milestones in Health Careers

A number of advancements in health-related programs took place in 2013-14 that is keeping the College technically up to date and keeping its curriculum competitive.

HACC’s Gettysburg Campus celebrated the 10th anniversary of opening of the associate degree (RN) nursing program at the campus. “HACC’s nursing program has been a positive venture for the people of this region,” said Kris O’Shea, vice president of Patient Care Services at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, one of the College’s partners in establishing the nursing program in Gettysburg. “Healthcare providers, such as the hospital, and the people they serve have benefitted from having trained nurses to help meet the needs of the community. For people interested in starting a nursing career, the program provides a path to success.”

In addition to Gettysburg Hospital/Wellspan, HACC partnered with Hanover Hospital, Chambersburg Hospital and other area health care facilities to establish the nursing program and provide quality clinical learning experiences that would bring highly trained, skilled nurses to the community. Since the start of the progeram, more than 350 students have graduated and are providing health care in hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, emergency rooms and other areas in the community where people need care.

Six scholarships are available to qualified students who enroll in HACC’s Gettysburg Campus associate degree nursing program:• Gettysburg Hospital Faith Redding Memorial Scholarship• Esther Little Scholarship in Nursing• Twila Charles Memorial Nursing Scholarship• Margaret Trew Cline Foundation Scholarship• Dr. William F and Mrs. Jennifer M Railing Scholarship Endowment• Community Endowed Gettysburg Campus Nursing Scholarship

Excellent reviews of healthcare programs during regular accreditation visits

HACC’s diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) and dental hygiene programs received exceptional reviews during accreditation visits at the Harrisburg Campus. In addition, the surgical technology program received kudos as a leader in the field.

The DMS program received glowing marks with no violations reported and high acknowledgements from its accrediting agency, the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

The Commission of Dental Accreditation also provided high marks to the dental hygiene program.

During the annual “Sealant Night” in February 2014, 159 dental sealant procedures were given for free and dental health information provided to more than 500 community members by students, faculty, staff and community volunteers.

The surgical technology program received a certificate of merit from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting in recognition of a 100 percent pass rate on the national certification exam in 2013. The class of 2014 also received a 100 percent pass rate, marking the third consecutive year all of HACC’s surgical technology students have aced the national exam.

In addition, the surgical technology program received recognition for its 100 percent student participation in the Galaxy Start Program of the Association of Surgical Technology, a professional organization

HACC Faculty Collaborates for Zombie Course

Eight HACC faculty members created the College’s online- and classroom-taught blended course called “Zombies in Contemporary Culture.” Faculty members across five disciplines and seven specialties collaborated to build a multidisciplinary course centered on surviving a “Zombie apocalypse.”

Faculty members used the online integrated learning platform, Brightspace, to link several technologies, including podcasts, discussion boards, virtual classroom space and Skype™ chats. The course featured a main narrative across a variety of subject matters including literature, microbiology, mythology, philosophy and psychology. Using the technology allowed faculty to design engaging academic content and helped to nurture collaboration among students and faculty.

The faculty team includes:• Rick Albright, Ph.D., interim associate dean for academic affairs• Jason Beaudin, assistant professor of English and humanities and

chair of the Center for Innovation and Teaching Excellence• Kathleen Conley, assistant professor of library and information resources• Nicole L. Ernst, associate professor of geospatial technology• Matthew Harris, chair of assessment and assistant professor of humanities• JuliaGrace J. Jester, Ph.D., interim department chair for social sciences• Cynthia Schanke, instructional technology analyst for the Lebanon

Campus and Virtual Learning• Dave Wartell, coordinator of the Center for Design and Instruction
