Office Bearers
As foreshadowed in the Chairman’s Report last year, Tim Considine stepped down as Chairman of the Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket
Club at the Annual General Meeting held in July 2013. Tim set a new vision for the Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club, particularly
with respect to a regional alliance plan. It is a privilege to replace Tim in the role of Club President, and I would like to thank him
for his support and guidance during the hand over period.
Cricket
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the
coaching staff and playing group for their
achievements. It was very satisfying to end
the season with both our Second and Fourth
XI teams in finals. The Fourth XI players
acquitted themselves well in a drawn quarter
final that we had to win against Hawthorn
Monash, the eventual premiers. They all
learnt much from the experience. The
Second XI, well what can be said, to win
three knock out finals against Richmond,
Carlton and Dandenong to win the
premiership was simply outstanding and will
long be remembered.
Congratulations to all the other Premiers in men’s and women’s Premier Cricket this season and to the St Kilda Cricket Club on
winning the Club Championship.
For Lloyd Mash, I am sure this success for the Club was a proud moment in his fourth season as Senior Coach. I would like to say
thank you to Lloyd on behalf of all the Committee, members and players on the effort and achievements over his four year
tenure. Lloyd will be taking time out next season. We wish him and his family well, and trust that in the future we will see Lloyd
around the Club in some capacity.
I would also like to extend thanks to Assistant Coach Stuart Clarke and Development Coach John Hayes who both provided
excellent support to Lloyd and provided a large contribution around the Club over several seasons.
Plans are well underway for the coming season. Everyone is now aware that Michael O’Sullivan has been appointed as Senior
Coach for two years. I cannot over emphasise firstly, how fortunate we are to have gained the services of Michael, and secondly
how well this places our Club to leverage off the existing players’ capabilities. We look forward to more success.
I am also very pleased to confirm that we have retained the services of Sean Pietersz as Assistant Coach, which we were very
keen to achieve, and Steve Cashen as batting coach. The Cricket Committee are still finalising the other coaching roles but I
would like to express my thanks to Jeff Harvey, Leigh Watts, and particularly Ben Waterman who worked tirelessly to put in
place the new coaching structure.

Finance
Despite a very strong focus on cost control throughout the season, it is disappointing to report again this season that the Club
recorded a financial loss. Fortunately, the loss was less than last season, and although small in cash terms, it was, however
completely unsatisfactory.
The primary cause of the loss was the pre-season decision by the Committee to include the cost of player clothing in the fees for
2013/14, which ultimately we could not offset with anticipated increases to fundraising.
To improve our financial management, we purchased a new finance system at the start of the season to record accurately all
financial transactions, and the Committee now has access to improved reporting. Together with other controls implemented by
Alex, our new Treasurer, we have improved our budgeting to manage our financial position.
To address the financial situation, the Committee has remained active since the end of season. The key focus has been the
identification of potential sponsors and preparation of sponsor packages that will leverage off our outstanding social media
capability.
Operations
At a Special General Meeting held in September, we adopted a new constitution based on the Consumer Affairs Victoria Model
Rules. In doing so, we reverted to the more traditional terms of Committee and President, rather than Board and Chairman.
This season the Cricket Committee continued working to improve our facilities with Manningham Council, particularly around
our goals and requirements for the turf wickets and ovals. This effort saw our ground ranking improve to a level where we were
eligible to host the Men’s Fourth XI Grand Final.
Thanks largely to the effort of Wayne Stewart in his first season as Game Day Manager, we hosted a number of other significant
games for Cricket Victoria. Including the Women’s, First and Second XI Grand Finals, and two ‘All – abilities’ games, the first of
which was attended by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Honourable Hugh Delahunty and Tony Dodemaide, CEO of
Cricket Victoria.

In addition, Schramms Reserve became the training venue for the Australian Women’s Cricket Team, the Southern Stars, before
leaving for their successful T20 campaign in Bangladesh.
These events at Schramms were important opportunities for us to showcase our facilities to Cricket Victoria. The Committee
believes Schramms Reserve is in a great location, with good facilities and easy access from the city, enabling it to be a key
cricketing venue in the City of Manningham. We will continue to work alongside the Council with the aim of developing the
facilities accordingly.
Community
In the community, our alliance with the Manningham Cricket Club, is an
important initiative for both of our Clubs and continues to develop. For
example, this season Manningham Cricket Club ran their ‘in2cricket’
program at Schramms on Saturday mornings. We have a role to assist in the
development of cricket within our region, particularly in junior cricket. It is
consistent with Cricket Victoria’s direction for Premier Cricket, and it
provides an opportunity for both clubs to fundraise jointly through much
larger events, such as the breakfast function held in February 2014.
In closing, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of everyone on the Committee and the Cricket Committee. I can assure
Members that we are determined to be a sustainably, successful club.
Special thanks to our volunteers, particularly Graeme, Ilva and Glenn Woolard, Roger Page and Les Allan, and the parents who
have helped on match days and Thursday nights.
The sad passing of our long standing volunteers, Don Patrick and Les Allan this season, gave us cause to reflect on how
important volunteers are to the fabric of clubs, and a great satisfaction in life is being able to give to others.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge Cricket Victoria whose support is invaluable.
Go Lions!

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and
disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgement, including the assessment of the
risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor
considers internal control relevant to the association's preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view, in order
to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the
effectiveness of the association's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies

Club Coach: Season Review
Lloyd Mash
On the back of three teams (First, Second and Third XI’s) making the finals in 2012-13, this Season was one of high hopes. With
no notable departures or arrivals we were looking for continued improvement across the whole playing group.
One of our common problems in recent seasons was to have strong and experienced leaders across all grades. Peter Dickson,
Darren Motschall, John Hayes and Mark Sheedy fulfilled these positions adequately. From here, the young playing group
(which we currently have) was able to gain much needed feedback and advice on how to play cricket at this level.
Premier cricket can be challenging and this year was no exception. We play so much white ball cricket prior to Christmas it was
hard for players to get what they actually needed to improve their games by the weekend’s game. Although training allows you
so much time to improve, it is on match day where you can showcase your skills under pressure. The club as a whole needs
more work in shorter version cricket if we are to become a power house in the competition.
One thing over my journey as coach is that some players listen and some do not. At this level, basic fundamentals are crucial
whilst constant reinforcement will help gain success as a club, team and individual. The pleasing aspect of coaching is seeing
improvement from players. Players such as Ejaaz Alavi, Jacques Augustin, Liam Banthorpe, Jack Rudd, Josh White, Noah
Korkolis, Chris Moore and Tim Baker, all showed that if you train hard enough, listen and learn, you could become a great of
the club.
From individuals to teams there is no greater feeling than winning a premiership. Having tasted it as a player and now as a
coach in the Second XI, it’s addictive. You just want more of it. The last time we won a premiership in the Second XI, the
following year the First XI made it to the Semi’s with multiple players coming in from that team. I know there are players whom
played in this premiership who will have a major impact in this coming season and for future years to come. Huge
congratulations to all players who played throughout the year in the Second XI and to the final 12 members who now share a
special bond with each other.
I would to acknowledge and congratulate the following:
Glenn Maxwell for all his success in season 2013/14
Darren Motschall as Second XI Premiership Captain
Ejazz Alavi & Jack Rudd for Victorian U19’s Selection
Liam Banthorpe & Anthony Brolic for Victorian U17’s Selection
15
Club Coach: Season Review
Bailey Eustance on Victorian U15’s Selection
Peter Dickson for winning his fifth Liddicut Medal and joining Cicket Victoria’s 200 Club
Tim Sheehan & Jon Fagg on their 150 First XI games
Shane Findlay on winning the Don Patrick Medal
First XI debutants – Liam Banthorpe & Tim Baker
Various Pathway representatives and coaches
Tim Considine & Darren Motschall for Life Membership recognition
All other award winners
Support is crucial to success and I would like to take this opportunity to thank many people for their efforts and committee
for the 2013/14 season:
The Cricket Committee – lead by Jeff Harvey and Leigh Watts
The Board – lead by President Graeme Cook
Administrators – Wayne Stewart & Megan Duckworth
Curator – David Blackley and the Manningham Council
Assistant Coaches—Stuart Clark, Sean Pietersz, John Hayes and Peter Dickson
Social Media and Player Correspondence— James Considine
All Captains throughout the XI’s
All sponsors and business partners
All Parents and Supporters
Volunteers – Sam Goodchap (Team Manager), Roger Page, Les Allan (Scorers), Graeme and Elva Woolard (Afternoon
Tea) and Glenn Woolard (Scoreboard Attendant).
This year will be remembered by the on field success of the Second XI. Off field however, we were all saddened by the passing
of a legend “Don Patrick”. So close to many people within the sporting community, it was a sad learning of Don’s passing. We
were all able to celebrate the life of Don and his multiple achievements. When I first walked into the doors at FDCC I was greet-
ed by the Coach and a very close second, Don! We will all miss him very much and his legacy will live on within the confines of
Schramms Reserve.
Finally I would like to thank my family for all their support over my career at the club and I wish everyone all the successes in
the future.

Harvey Watts Academy: Season Review
John Hayes
The Harvey-Watts Academy ran well during the lead up to the season with the first session, the information night, being held in
early July with good attendance from prospective players and their parents. The initial trial session was held at Maddocks
Sports in Blackburn on the 21st July and from this trial, 20 players aged between 13 and 18 years old were selected to be part of
the Academy Program.
2013-14 was a unique year for the Academy with the introduction of female players to the program through a partnership with
Box Hill Cricket Club. This initiative was successful, however, all three girls were only able to attend a handful of sessions due to
injury and illness.
The Academy Program ran for seven weeks with participants working through various game scenarios, with mental and skill
development an important part of their training program. During these training sessions numerous existing Fitzroy Doncaster
players assisted the Academy participants and joined in with training as mentors, along with having guest coaches such as
Lloyd Mash, Peter Dickson and Steven Duckworth.
The Academy program then moved into a ‘non training’ phase due to players club commitments and the Cricket Victoria
Pathway trials commencing. The Pathway process and State trials take priority over all Premier cricket club player development
work as the selection processes for each of the regions is quite intense and junior players need to juggle their school, family
and club cricket commitments.
We recommenced our program in February 2014 after the State Championships.
The following members of our Academy and Senior Squads were selected to play for the following teams in the State
Championships along with some club representation as coaches:

As you can see the club has a number of representatives (20 players and 3 coaches) across 4 regions which is a healthy sign for
the future and a credit to those involved in and around the club and who are involved in talent ID. This season Luke Joyce was
awarded the Development Player of the Year award on the back of a good season, an outstanding game in the Forth XI final
against Hawthorn Monash University and by showing he has plenty of talent, a real player for the future!
It is my belief that the club should continue to improve and develop in this area with the injection of some new coaches and
coaching philosophies, however list management of young players will become a key part of success in the future.
I wish to congratulate the Second XI on their Premiership, especially Darren Motschall for the way he led his young team; a
terrific effort.
Thank you to outgoing coach Lloyd Mash, a great inspiration and friend to us all.
Given I have resigned from my position as the Academy Coach and also from my role as Third XI captain, and retired as a play-
er, I would like to also thank all involved at the Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club, players, committee members, supporters and
parents for welcoming and providing me with the opportunity to be part of a truly great club.

1st XI: Season Review
Peter Dickson
The 2013/14 season was an indifferent year which had many highs and lows. Unfortunately this is a common theme for
the First XI where our best cricket can be very good but the gap between our best our worst is far too great.
With fantastic outright results against Northcote and Greenvale it put us in a strong position to have an assault on the
top eight. Unfortunately we lost a crucial game against Carlton which left us having to rely on results to go our way in the
final round. The last game of the year was a clear highlight for myself as captain, seeing the team put in a great all round
team performance and comprehensively beating Melbourne. Unfortunately results did not go our way and we were left
in ninth position narrowly missing the eight.
After a slow start to the year we were chasing our tails and had to fight extremely hard to get ourselves back into a posi-
tion to be able to play finals. This is something we managed to turn around and showed some real character throughout
the group during this period.
Jacques Augustin fought his way back into the team and had a real impact in the later part of the season; he also scored a
fine 100 against Prahran. Nat Vardi scoring his first 50 against strong opposition in Melbourne in tough circumstances and
Liam Banthorpe and Ejaaz Alaavi showing their class and consistency as young players was also a real standout. The two
key performers for the season were Tim Sheehan and Steven Duckworth who lead from the front with bat and ball
respectively. Both these players showed great skill and experience throughout the year and should be the bench mark for
young players.
I would like to congratulate the second eleven for the premiership win, this is a great building block for next season. So
many young players have now put their name forward and will start challenging for spots above. We have a great mix of
youth and experience at the club and in my mind have the skill and talent to achieve something similar in the first eleven.
To all the coaches and captains of the other grades, I would like to say thank you for your support and also well done on a
great year personally. To Lloyd Mash who has retired, I would like to make mention of what a great mentor he has been
for not just myself, but many people at the club over a long period. Hopefully we see Lloyd back at the Lions in years to
come.
Last but not least, to my mentor and great friend Don Patrick who passed away during the season, we will miss you very
much and I hope we can show you some premiership success again in the next few years.

Best Clubman: Doug Rumble Memorial Trophy
Doug Rumble was a wicketkeeper who played 187 games for Fitzroy and University. He was born in 1955 and played his first
game in 1970 at the age of 15, keeping to the likes of Eddie Illingworth and ‘Froggy’ Thompson, the most feared opening
bowling combination in district cricket. He made 1658 runs, took 286 catches and 25 stumping's throughout his career. After
two seasons at University, Doug returned to Fitzroy to become captain coach for the club for two years in the early 1980s.
Doug was tragically killed in a skiing accident in 1986, just before the commencement of the first season of the amalgamated
Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club. He left behind his wife Glenda and two young children, Jessica and Thomas. Fitzroy Doncaster
lost a great clubman. Such was the respect of both Fitzroy and University had for Doug, the clubs now play for the ‘Doug
Rumble Cup’ each time they meet. Doug earned this respect not only for the way he went about his cricket, but for the
qualities he possessed as a person. On the field, you knew that if the side was in trouble, he would be the one fighting back in
the lower order. Off the field, he was a great clubman, who was only too keen to help others. He was respected by both his
teammates and opposition alike, and was probably one of the most popular players in the game.
This trophy is not for the best wicketkeeper, it is for the player who has best demonstrated those qualities that Doug possessed
as a player, a clubman, a teammate and a friend. It is a very important trophy for the club to honour Doug’s memory, his
contribution, and to encourage those qualities in the current generation of players.

Vale
Don Patrick
Les Allan
24.02.1937—08.12.13
The 'Jag', a life member of the club and stalwart of Schramms Reserve, he
was the much loved team manager of our 1st XI for many years.
In the early 1980s, Don was heavily involved in the amalgamation of the
Fitzroy Cricket Club and Doncaster Cricket Club. It has been noted, that
although the merger was tough, he was the fabric that held it together
and helped build a team worthy of a premiership.
"Make sure you give 100%, because if you don't give 100%, you're
wasting the greatest gift, and that's life."
We will miss him dearly, but will never forget him.
21.07.1937— 19.04.2014
Les joined Fitzroy Doncaster in 2006 and was integral to our successful
Second XI over his eight years with the club. His attention to detail was
second to none, and all players enjoyed his honesty and company during
this time.
Right up until the time of his death he was still completing scorecards for
our award winners – which are treasured by all who received them.
Saturday mornings before a game will never be the same for the Second
XI, but his impact on the team and club will not be forgotten.
Both Don and Les have left a significant mark on Fitzroy Doncaster Cricket Club and those associated with the club. Volunteers
are the lifeblood of a club; without them it is very difficult to run. We thank them both for the service they provided and we
will remember them forever—may they rest in peace.

Roger Page: 600 1st XI Matches
Round 6 saw Fitzroy Doncaster's
scorer, Roger Page, reach his 600th
game.
Roger's very long association with
the Club commenced back in Round
1 October 1976, when Fitzroy
played Richmond at the Punt Rd
Oval.
Bartercard Victorian Premier Cricket 2nd XI Premiers
Captain Darren Motschall won the toss and elected to bowl on a flat Albert Ground wicket against the Damien Bulakowski led
Dandenong outfit. Having defeated both the 1st placed Carlton and 3rd placed Monash in the preceding finals, the Lions faced
another tough challenge against the 2nd placed Panthers.
Having lost to them in their Round 3 ‘One Day’ encounter
earlier in the season, the Lions were determined to put that
result behind them as they fought for the ultimate bragging
rights.
Despite some early flair from both Dandenong openers,
Chris Moore (2-36) made the initial impact removing
Mathew Darvell (7) after he edged to 2nd slip where Steve
Villani gratefully accepted the catch. The dangerous Peter
Sweeney raced to 20 before Moore again found him
knicking to Villani in 2nd slip. With the game well and truly
in the balance at 2-58, Motschall (3-16) and Kamasen
Nayager (4-17) combined to decimate the Dandenong middle order to leave them reeling at 8-66 just after lunch. Bulakowski
(9*) and James Sheerin (5) provided a rear-guard action to frustrate the Lions bowlers until Josh White returned to clean up
Sheerin. Dandenong were finally dismissed for just 89 inside 47 overs.
The Lions got off to a horror start losing Nat Vardi (1) and Jacques Augustin (0) to Brett Fairbanks (3-39) in consecutive balls to
leave the challengers at 2-12 in the fourth over. Things were compounded when Steve Villani (5) then chipped to mid-wicket to
swing the game back in favour of the Panthers. Jack Rudd (23) joined opener Jack Blyth (33) to steady the ship and take the
score to 45 before the latter chipped a return catch to Bulakowski (2-42). Shane Findlay (14) made a quick contribution before
being castled and bringing Motschall (62) to the crease. The skipper was resolute with the bat and ensure the Lions scrapped a
