ExecutiveSummaryTheverynameoftheevent‐RealityCheck–saiditall.ItwasanopportunityforhundredsofleadersfromthroughouttheNorthandSouthCarolinaregiontopauseforasingledaytotakestockofthepaceandmagnitudeoftheregionsexpectedgrowth.Indoingso,itservedasa“realitycheck”forthoseleadersaboutwheretheregionisheaded.ThisgroundbreakingULIRealityCheckeventheldonJune4,2013,challengedparticipantstoaccommodate1.8millionnewresidentsand860,000millionnewjobsintheregionby2050.Thedaywasfilledwithenergyandexcitement.Thespeakersgaveanationalperspectivewhilethegamedayexercisegavealocalperspective.Theparticipantswerefrommanydifferentbackgroundsandages.Formanyoftheparticipants,thestatisticswereasoberingreminderabouttherapidrateoftheregion’sgrowthandthepressingneedforaregion‐wideconversationabouthowthisgrowthwillaffectoureconomy,ourenvironmentandourqualityoflife.CollaboratingfortheSuccessofOurRegionAnallianceofULICharlotte,CentralinaCouncilofGovernmentsandCatawbaRegionalCouncilofGovernmentsraisedawarenessthroughtheRealityCheckevent,andcommittedtobreakingdownbarrierstoachievingqualitygrowthintheregion.TheseorganizationscametogetherbecauseofCONNECTOurFuture,athree‐yearprocessthatbringstogetherpublic,privateandnonprofitorganizationsacrossour14‐countyregion.Thisinitiativeiscreatingaregionalgrowthframeworkthatwillhelptobuildjobsandtheeconomy,improvequalityoflifeandcontrolthecostofgovernmentastheregiongrows.TheRealityCheck2050visioningexercisewasanextraordinaryopportunityforkeybusiness,political,communityandnon‐profitleadersfromthe14‐county

regiontopause,thinkbig,andconsiderhowtheregioncanbestgrowandthriveoverthenext37years.Whenthe41tablesbegantheirworkwithLEGObricksandyarn,four"growththemes"emerged:1. “Compact,urban,”whichconcentratesmost

growthclosertoCharlotte.2. “Multiplecenters,”whichfocusesdevelopmentin

multipleexistingcitiesandtownsintheregion.3. “Corridor,”whichdirectsgrowthalongmajor

highwayortransitcorridors.4. “Dispersed,”whichlocatesgrowthinmultiple

centersandthroughouttheregion,mostlyasadditionstoexistingcommunities.

Participants’desiredoutcomesforthefutureoftheregionincluded:1. Ourcitiesandtownsarevibrantplaceswhere

peoplewanttolive.2. Peoplecangetgoodjobswithinareasonable

commute.3. Accessibilitytoparks,greenways,biketrailsand

otheramenitiesisincreased.4. Housingisavailabletomeetawiderangeof

needs.5. Thereisopportunityforanyonetosucceed.NeweraoflanduseandtransportationThiseventmadehistory.Abroadsampleofprivate,publicandnonprofitleadersgatheredtoconsiderlandusedecisionsusingaunique,tactileexercisedevelopedbytheULI–theUrbanLandInstitute.RealityCheck2050organizersturnedaspotlighttowardtherealitythatfuturelanduseandtransportationdecisionscancreatedrasticallydifferentlandusepatterns,opportunities,andtrade‐offs,andparticipantssoundedacalltoactionanddemandedeffectiveleadership.

CONNECTOurFuture–aprocessinwhichcommunities,counties,businesses,educators,non‐profitsandotherorganizationsworktogethertogrowjobsandtheeconomy,improvequalityoflifeandcontrolthecostofgovernment.Thisprojectwillcreatearegionalgrowthframeworkdevelopedthroughextensivecommunityengagementandbuiltonwhatcommunitiesidentifyasexistingconditions,futureplansandneeds,andpotentialstrategies.RealityCheck–avisioningexercisecreatedbyULI–theUrbanLandInstitute,tohelpaddresstherealityofgrowthprojectedforourarea.RealityCheckseekstobuildbroad‐basedconsensusonwhereandhowgrowthshouldbeaccommodatedbyconveningadiversegroupofstakeholderstoaskthequestions:Howshallwepreserve,promote,andprotectourstrengthsandassets?Howshallweaddressthechallengesandseizetheopportunitiesfacedbyourregion?SustainableCommunitiesRegionalPlanningGrantProgram–SCRPsupportslocally‐ledcollaborativeeffortsthatbringtogetherdiverseinterestsfromthemanymunicipalitiesinaregiontodeterminehowbesttotargethousing,economicandworkforcedevelopment,andinfrastructureinvestmentstocreatemorejobsandregionaleconomicactivity.TheSCRPprogramisakeyinitiativeofthePartnershipforSustainableCommunities,inwhichHUDworkswiththeU.S.DepartmentofTransportation(DOT)andtheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)tocoordinateandleverageprogramsandinvestments.

BackgroundTheU.S.CensusdatashowsthattheCharlotteRegionwasthefastestgrowingregionintheU.S.overthepastdecade.Projectionsindicatethisgrowthratewillcontinuewitha50percentpopulationincreaseintwodecadesandadoublingofthepopulationinfourdecades.

Ourabilitytogrowbusinessesthatsupporthighqualityjobstomatchpopulationgrowthisdirectlylinkedtotheeconomichealthandvitalityofthisregion.Ontheflipside–ifwedon’tcreatequalityjobsfortomatchpopulationgrowthourregionandourstatewillsufferseriouseconomicconsequences.Thereisclearevidencethatregionswithgrowthframeworksarebetterequippedtodevelopandrefinestrategiesthatgrowtheeconomyandjobs,controlcostofgovernmentandimprovequalityoflife.Thereasonissimple.Betteralignmentofstrategiesmeansthatlimitedresourcescanbedirectedwheretheywillproducethebestresults.Thisisespeciallyimportantgiventhefactthatfederalandstatefundingfortheinvestmentsneedtoaccommodategrowthwillbeclearlymorelimitedinthefutureandthecompressedtimeframetomaketheneededinvestmentstostayaheadofgrowthimpacts.Thisregionisnotedforitsexceptionalpublic‐privatepartnershipsandcollaborativeeffortsbutwehavenotyetdevelopedaregionalgrowthframework.Despitethisfact,ourregionhasdevelopedsomeofthe“bestinclass”workforceandeconomicdevelopmentprogramsinthecountryandhasprosperedoverthe

pastdecades.Witharegionalframeworkwewilldoevenbetter.Developingaregionalgrowthframeworkwillenableourregiontoacceleratethisprogressbybroadeninguseof“best‐in‐class”programs;developingconsensus

basedregionalstrategiesandanon‐goingcapacitytoaddressbarriersandopportunities;aligntactics,programsandresources;eliminategapsandoverlapsandmeasureprogresstowardregionalgoals.CONNECTOurFutureCONNECTOurFutureisathree‐yearprocessthatbringstogetherpublic,privateandnonprofitorganizationsacrossour14‐countyregiontodevelopaplanforgrowththatwillhelpbuildjobsandthe

helpustousethelimitedresourcesavailablefortheinfrastructureandsystemsnecessaryforgrowth,

giveustheopportunitytodiscusshowwewanttoaddressmulti‐billiondollarinfrastructureinvestments,and

encourageexistingandnewbusinessinvestmentsinourregion.

Thisambitiousinitiativeisathree‐phaseprocess.PhaseOnestartedinthefallof2012byengagingcommunitymembersabouttheirpersonalneedsandvaluesthroughopenhouses,smallgroupdiscussionsandsurveys.Morethan2,200participantsfromthe14‐countyregionprovidedawealthofvaluableinformation.PhaseTwostartedinthesummerof2013withRealityCheck2050,duringwhich400participantshelpedusbegintofigureouthowwefittheprojected1.8millionpeopleand850,000‐plusjobstobeaddedtothisregionbytheyear2050,whilestillpreservingthethingsPhaseOneparticipantssaidwereimportant.The“themes”forgrowththatweredevelopedatRealityCheck2050willbesharedregionallyat48workshopsplannedineachofthe14counties.AttheseCommunityGrowthWorkshops,atleast1,600residentswillhavetheopportunitytoweighinonhowtheythinkthosethemesmightworkintheircounty.InPhaseThree,startinginearly2014,fourtofive“AlternativeGrowthScenarios”fortheregion’sfuturewillbedevelopedbasedontheresultsofthosecommunityworkshops,the“themes”fromReality

Check2050andinformationgatheredfromPhaseOne.Thepublicwillgettoprovidefeedbackoneachofthosescenariosandspecifywhichscenario(s)providetheregionaloutcomestheywouldliketosee.Onceapreferredscenarioisselected,recommendationsandstrategieswillbedevelopedtohelptheregionachieveitsgoalsandatoolkitwillprovideresourcesandexamplesofregionalandnationalbestpractices.CONNECTOurFutureisbasedon,andbuildsfrom,theregion’ssharedvision.In2005‐2008,the14‐countybi‐stateregioncametogetheranddevelopedavisionfortheregion’sfuture.Thatvisionhasbeenadoptedbythelocalgovernmentsrepresentingmorethan70percentofthepopulationintheregionandisbeingtranslatedintogrowthoptionsthatwillproducetheresultsthepublicwants.CONNECTandfuturescenarioplanningprovidesaforum,process,setoftools,andmeasurableoutcomesforcommunitiesofallsizestocontemplatefuturedevelopmentpossibilitiesandsharealong‐termvision.Whyisthisprocesssoimportant?Itallowscommunitiesto: explorethe“whatif’s”ofaregion’sfuture, considerthetradeoffsbetweendifferentgrowth

scenariosorpolicydecisions, re‐framelocalgrowthquestions,and answerwhat,where,when,andhowgrowth

shouldoccurtomeetacommonvision.

RealityCheck2050RealityCheckreferstoadefiningmoment,atippingpoint,whenaregion’sresidentsbecomeawarethattheyhavechoicestomakeaboutgrowth,airquality,traffic,housingaffordability,andotherimportantissues.Neitheratraditionalconferencenoratheoreticalexercise,RealityCheckisaplanningtoolrootedinanalysisofreal‐worldeconomic,demographic,andgeographicdataandtrends.Itallowsparticipantstothrowouttheirpreconceivednotionsofhowlandiszonedtodayandforgetwhattypeofgrowththeybelieveiscomingtomorrow.Theexerciseisachanceforparticipantstoactasmasterplannersforhowtheywouldliketheregiontolookinthefuture.RealityCheck2050isacollaborativeregionalvisioningprocessthatbringstogetherstakeholdersfromtheCONNECTOurFutureRegiontobegina

dialogueabouthowwewantourregiontolookintheyear2050.Theexercisehadseveralgoals,including: torecognizethelegitimatepointsofviewof

differentstakeholders topromotearegion‐wideawarenessofthelevel

ofgrowththatisprojected toenvisionhownewresidents,jobs,greenspace,

andtransportationoptionsmightbedistributedthroughouttheregion

tolaythefoundationforthedevelopmentofaconcretelistofnextstepstosupportregionalplanningandensurequalitygrowthfortheregionoverthecomingdecades.

CONNECTOurFuturechoseRealityCheck2050tolaunchitssecondphaseofpublicengagementaroundgrowth.TheULIRealityCheckeventprovidedawaytolookregionallyatgrowthissues,andfollowedatime‐tested,nationally‐usedmodeltoprovidea"realitycheck"tothoseconsideringregionalgrowth.

TheGameRealityCheck2050wasauniqueeventthatbroughttogetheralargeanddiversesetofpolitical,businessandcommunityleaderstoenvisionthefutureoftheirregion.Insodoing,theyworkedwiththebestandmostrecentinformationavailableaboutpopulationgrowthaswellasexistingtransportationandlanduseresources.Theydecidedonguidingprinciples,placedLEGOblocksrepresentinggrowthonaboard,andlistedbarrierstotheirvisionalongwithsolutions.Morethan400individualsappliedandparticipateinRealityCheck2050.Participantsincludedleadersfromlargecorporations,smallbusinesses,developers,electedofficials,conservationists,andcivicleaders.AtRealityCheck2050,theparticipantswereassignedtooneofthe41tables.Eachtablehadrepresentativesfromawidevarietyofbackgroundsalongwithatrainedfacilitatorandscribesupportingthetable’sdeliberation.Together,theywerechargedwithplottingwherefuturegrowththrough2050shouldgo,decidingwheretoplacepopulation,jobsandthetransportationinfrastructuretoconnectthem.The“gameboard”wasalarge‐formatmapofthe14‐countyregionshowingtownsandcities,majorroadandtransitcorridors,andprotectedareas,thoughttoencourageparticipantstothinkregionallyratherthanlocally,alljurisdictionalboundarieswereintentionallyomitted,althoughplacenamesofcitiesandtownshelpedparticipantsorientthemselves.Themapwasgriddedwithacellequalingtwosquaremiles.Eachtable’sgamepiecesincludedasetofcoloredLEGOsusedtoallocateprojecteddensitiesandthreecolorsofyarntoidentifyroads,transitandgreensspace.ResidentialandemploymentdensitiesincreaseasLEGOsarestackedtogetherinagridcell.Accordingtotherulesoftheexercise,thegrowthprojectionswerenotnegotiable.Whilethesenumberscouldbedebated,expertsintheregionagreetheyarereasonableprojections.Also,the

projectedgrowthrepresentedinLEGOswererequiredtobeplacedonthemapbeforetheendoftheexerciseandallgrowthallocationswereadditive–thatis,thegrowththatisallocatedwasconsideredanadditiontowhatalreadyexists.AlltheprojectedgrowthrepresentedbyLEGOswasallocatedbeforetheendofthe90‐minutegameboardexercise.Participantswereadvisedtothinkbig,keepanopenmindandbeboldandcreativeintheirapproach.BeforepositioningLEGOsontheboard,teamswereaskedtodeveloptheirkeyprinciplestoguidegrowth.TheseprinciplesguidedtheallocationofgrowthandtransportationresourcessymbolizedbytheLEGOandyarnallocations.Facilitatorsinsistedthatallviewsbeconsideredandthatconsensusbereachedbeforeaprinciplecouldbeadopted.Scribesateachtablerecordedtheprinciples,whichwerelatercollectedandtabulated.Althoughtheparticipantscamefromdifferentpartsoftheregion,representeddifferentconstituenciesorpointsofview,andwereofvariedrace,genders,agesandpoliticalaffiliations,theyenunciatedremarkablysimilarsetsofguidingprinciples.TheparticipantsthenplacedhundredsofLEGObricksanddozensoffeetofyarnonthemaps.YellowLEGOsrepresentedjobs,redLEGOsrepresentedhouseholds,andyarnoutlinednewroads,regionaltransit,andgreenspace.Inafewhours,participantscreatedprinciplestoguidegrowth,understoodscenariosforthe

year2050and,perhapsmostimportantly,gainedanewunderstandingoftheregion’sgrowthissues.Aftergameplay,participantsdiscussedthefindingsfromtheexerciseinrelationshiptotheirguidingprinciplesanddefinedthenextsteps.Aftertheboardgameportionconcluded,datafromeachtablewascollectedbyvolunteers.YellowandredLEGOswerecountedandrecordedonacell‐by‐cellbasisaswasthepresenceofdifferenttypesoflandusepatternsandtransportationprioritiesofeachtable.Local,regionalandnationalspeakersdeliveredcandidinsightsandinspirationtothepackedroom.ULI’sSeniorResidentFellow,EdMcMahonspotlightednationalexamplesofcommunitiesthathaveplannedforandleveragedgrowthtocreatethriving,sustainableplaces.Hecautionedthat,whileourregionisdoingmanythingswell,westillmustmakechangestogrowaswechoosewithoutdestroyingwhatpeopleloveaboutthecommunity.ProvidinganinspiringstoryofthesuccessofEnvisionUtah,RobertGrowofferedinsightintotheorganizationthatcreatedagrassrootsinitiativeaimedtokeepUtahbeautiful,prosperous,andneighborlyforfuturegenerations.Asaneutralfacilitator,EnvisionUtahbroughttogetherresidents,electedofficials,developers,conservationists,businessleaders,andotherinterestedpartiestomakeinformeddecisionsabouthowweshouldgrow.Empoweringpeopletocreatethecommunitiestheywantisstillourgoal.TheongoingprogressofferedhopeforthefutureoftheregionalframeworkbeingdevelopedthroughCONNECT.Hope,mixedwithrealityandinspiration,werepartoftheRealityCheck2050experience,asregionalleadersthoughbigandenvisionedwhatthenextthirty‐sevenyearscouldlooklikeintheCharlotteregion.

lookedattheexerciseandhowitlooksontheground.Inexercisesofthissort,itisdifficulttopredictwhetherpeoplewillactuallyliveandworkinthesameplace,evenifjobsandhousingarestackedtogether.Someofthisisduetothescaleofthemap,andsomeofitisduetothereal‐lifefactthatevenwhenoneareamayhaveanexcellentmixofjobsandhousing,somepeoplestillchoosetoworkoutsidethearea.AtRealityCheck2050,someofthetablesthatfollowedthemoreDispersed(conventional)developmentpatternalsohadabalancebetweenjobsandhousing.

Thisisalargeregion.HavingaregionthesizeofConnecticutmadethescaleofeachgridquitelarge‐2squaremiles.EvenoneLEGObrickrepresentedeither1700householdsor1500jobs.Thisverylargescaleprobablycontributedtosomeconfusion,andcreatedagreatdealofvariationevenwithingrowthpatterns.Duringtheexercise,participantsappearedtohavefounditdifficulttodemonstratedifferentmixesofjobsandhousing,particularlyinnon‐urbanizedareas.

TherearevariationswithinthePatterns.Evenwithinthefourgenericgrowthpatterns,therewasalotofvariation.Forexample,intheCorridorGrowthPattern,sometablesshowedfewcorridorswithhighstacksandsomeshowedmanycorridorswithmediumstacks.AlsointheMultipleCenterGrowthpatternsometablesshowedfewcenterswithhighstacksandsomeshowedmanycenterswithmediumstacks.

TheresultsoftheRealityCheck2050visioningexerciseinclude:collectedandcompiledstatementsonguidingprinciples,barriersandsolutions;datafromthegameboardsthemselves;andpollinginformation.

GuidingprinciplesAsRealityCheck2050participantsrepresenteddiversecommunitiesandbroughtawiderangeofviewpointstotheexercise,itwasrecognizedthattotalagreementoneveryaspectrelatedtogrowthwouldnotbeachievable.Therefore,tableswereaskedtoidentifykeyguidingprinciplesinwhichtherewerefulltableagreementandthenusedthosesamesharedprinciplestoinformandguildthevisioningexercise.Anumberofsharedprinciplesemergedincluding: Supportenhancedregionaltransportation

connectionswithintheregionandotherpartsofthestate

Encourageamorecompactpatternofdevelopmentthatwillreducesuburban/ruralsprawl.

Encouragedevelopmentinareaswherethenecessaryinfrastructure–roads,water,sewer,andschools‐isavailable,plannedorcanbecosteffectivelyprovided.

GamePlaySurveyFindings

Theprinciples,barriersandsolutionsthatemergedinRealityCheck2050tellusthatleadersandopinion‐shapersareconcernedabouttheregionalchallengesofgrowth.Theybelievethereisalinkbetweenlandusepatterns,regionalprosperityandqualityoflifeforeveryone,andtheywanttogrowalongcorridors.Theyarereadytoworktowardsolutions,andtheydemandeffectiveleadershipsothatwecanprotectourcommunities,continuetoenjoyeconomicprosperityandensurethatpeopleatallincomelevelshaveaccesstoqualityhousingnearjobs.Followingthereviewofthemorninggameplay,participantswerefurtherpolledabouttheirprioritiesfortheregion.Usinghandheldpollingdevices,participantsregisteredtheirvotes.Duringthepolling,severalquestionsallowedformultipleanswersfromtheaudience(thusvotingpercentagesmaynotequal100%).Guidingprinciples(seeAppendixforspecificpollingresults)Afterparticipatingintheexerciseandmovingintoanotherforum,participantswereaskedagaintochoosetheirtopthreeguidingprinciplesthataremostimportantfortheregioninthenext30years.Emergingfromthispoll,anoverwhelming47%oftheparticipantsstatedtheysupportedenhancedregionaltransportationconnections,connectingwithinourregionandwithotherpartsofthebi‐stateregion.Thenwith36%support,threeprinciplesofmorecompactpatternofdevelopment,developmentinareasofpresentorplannedinfrastructuresupportandthereservationofwaterresourcesandquality.Infurthercomparisonoftheguidingprinciplesdevelopedbyeachtableandthenthepatternsdevelopedduringgameday,itwasfascinatingtoreviewthecontrasts.Forexample,ofthe11tables(27%)thatplacedtheirLEGOsinaDispersedGrowthpattern,only8%ofthepolledparticipantsagreedwiththeseprinciplesduringthefinalpolling.Thatwouldonlyequateto3oftheparticipatingtables.Thisisfurthersupportedbythekeypadpolling,laterintheday,showingadesireforspecificdevelopmentqualities(seeAppendixquestion1).LinkinglanduseandourcommunitiesParticipantsdemonstratedgrowinginsightthatlanduseandtransportationareintimatelyconnected.ThemanyLegosrepresentinghousingandjobsthatwereaddedtothegameboardshowedthatastheregioncontinuestourbanize,theconnectionbecomesanevenmorecriticalone.Aspartsoftheregionbecomeincreasinglyurban,automobiletrafficwillbecomeamoreandmoreburdensomefactoflife.

Whenconsideringthefutureofourregion,two‐thirdsoftheparticipantsfinditiscriticalthatourcitiesandtownsarevibrantplaceswherepeoplewanttolive.Additionally,with47and43percentrespectively,peoplewanttohavegoodjobswithinareasonablecommuteandaccesstoparks,greenways,biketrailsandotheramenities.Additionally,whenpolled,41percentagreedthatgrowthshouldbecenteredalongcorridors,withanother37percentsidingwithmultiplecentersofgrowth.Acorridorgrowthland‐usepatternischaracterizedbytowncentersthataresmallerinscalethantheregionalcenters,butmorecompactandmixedthantraditionalsuburbandevelopment.Whilethemultiplegrowthcenterscreatesdistinctregionalcentersbyclusteringgrowthintowell‐definedareas.Thishigher‐densitydevelopmenthelpsmaintainopenspacesattheperipheryforrecreationornaturalfunctions.PrioritizinginvestmentintransportationandutilityinfrastructureToachievethegrowthscenariosandguidingprinciplesthatemergedfromtheexercise,therewasanoverwhelmingsupportforincreasinglightrailandcommuterrailtransitintheregion(supportedby84percentoftheparticipants),repairingandincreasingcapacityoftheexistinglinestosupportredevelopmentandinfill(58percent),andtoimprovetheroadswealreadyhave.AddressingthechallengesandbarriersUltimately,thechallengestheregionfacesincludethedevelopmentofqualityhousing,increasedmodalchoiceintransportation,andresourceandlandconservation/preservation.Astheparticipantsfurtherarticulatedupontheseconcepts,itbecameevidentthattheyareallinterrelatedandrequire

investmentintothefollowingfourcategories:regionalleadership,jobcreation,adequateformsoftransportation,andcommunityeducation.Regionalleadershipwillhelptoalignpolicyattheleveloflocaljurisdictions.Participantscalledformorecooperationbetweenelectedofficials,business,andcommunityleaderstocoordinateoverallgoalsandvisionsforlanduseandtransportation.Whileidentifiedasachallenge,itwasalsonotedthataregionalvision,leadershipandcooperationisthewaywearegoingtoachievethegoalsofthe14‐countyregion.Whilethechallengeisjobcreation,participantsrealizeditistheengineforfuturegrowththeregionandlocalcommunities.Economicgrowththroughouttheregioniscriticalforsupportingthefutureofourregion.Thefutureofthe14‐countyregiondependsongrowthforthehealthofthecommunity(vibrancy,fiscallyandfunctionally).Notingtheneedtobroadentheaccesstoalternativeformsoftransportationincludingtransit,walkingandbiking,putslessstrainonpresentinfrastructureandoffersadditionaloptionsforvaryinglifestyles,theparticipantsalsobelievestoovercomethischallenge,thereneedstobeadditionalinvestmentininfrastructure.Developingfundingoptionsforavarietyofinfrastructurefundingandcommunityinvestmentarecritical.Theneedformoreeducationofthecommunityisachallengemanyintheaudienceidentified.TheongoingcommunicationofwhyandhowneedstobefeedtothecommunityasawholetoreinforcetheworkandofCONNECTandthefuturestepsnecessarytoimplementthegrowthplans.

NextStepsAccommodating1.8millionnewresidentsand860,000newjobsinthe14‐countyregionisbothatremendousopportunityandaformidablechallenge.Preparingforitcannotwait.BreakingnewgroundWhathappenedonJune4thinRealityCheck2050willbeusedalmostimmediatelybyCONNECTOurFuture.The“GrowthThemes,”thescorecardsthatgowiththemandtheresultsfromthepolling,willbesharedwiththeentireregionthroughaseriesof16daysofCommunityCharacterWorkshops.Thesewilltakeplaceinthe14‐countiesbeginningSeptember5andrunningthroughOctober17,2013.Fellowresidentsallovertheregionwillseeandrespond,usingtheRealityCheckinformationtofigureouthowyourideasmaywork,ornot,intheirowncounties.DuringtheCommunityWorkshops,participantswillworktowardcreating“AlternativeGrowthScenarios”thatwillbesharedinearly2014withtheentireregion.ParticipantswillhavetheopportunitytobeanambassadorforCONNECTOurFutureinsharingtheseresultsandtoweighintheapproachthatproducesthelong‐termoutcomesthecommunitywantstoseefortheregionandyourcommunity.TheendresultofRealityCheckandCONNECT,andthatofsomanyothers,willbeaRegionalGrowthFrameworkthatincludestheoverall“selectedgrowthoption”thatyouhavehelpedtodevelop(afirstforthisregion!),thatproducestheoutcomesthepublicagreesareimportantforthefuture.ThefinalRegionalGrowthFrameworkwillalsoincludetoolboxesandrecommendationsforvoluntaryadoptionbycommunitiestohelpmakethoseselectedoutcomesareality.Thesearescheduledtobeavailablebytheendof2014.AtRealityCheck2050,wehelpedtheregiondevelopitsfirst‐everframeworkforgrowthforthenext37years.
