SEAL LOCAL HISTORY There will be a special local history day in Seal on 11th May. It will start with a conducted walk around the historic centre of the village, led by David Williams (one of the authors of the 1997 book ‘Seal: The History of a Parish’) It will return to the library in Seal, where a wide selection of old photos and maps will be on display. The archives stored in the library will be open for inspection, and other local historians, including the other two authors of the book, will be available to explain these and help visitors to find anything they would like to see; and on the computers, family

historians will help you look up details of any ancestors who may have lived in the parish. A number of other objects of historic interest will be on show. If you have anything you would like to lend for display then, or at the Village Fete on 21st September, or any old photographs which could be copied for these events, please leave them with the librarian; Lesley Edmeades well ahead of time. There may also be a chance to develop an oral history record for Seal; if you would like to help with this, or have your own memories of the village recorded, please talk to one of the historians in the library on the 11th May.

Seal Parish Council Chairman’s Annual Report Welcome to our annual report, which I hope will bring you up to date with what we have been doing for Seal Parish in the last 12 months, and our proposals for the next year.Olympic Torch - In July the clouds finally blow away and the sun came out as the Olympic Torch Relay travelled through Seal, and it was welcomed by a High Street packed with happy residents. The route was so colourful as the Olympic flags and bunting were joined by Union Jacks and paper torches being held high by the hundreds who lined the route. Guests who had seen the torch come through Seal 64 years before enjoyed a VIP lunch. Our special guest Mr.Frank Verge came with his original torch from 1948 and joined the children from Seal Church of England Primary School on the recreation ground. After a fun filled sports day he awarded specially engraved gold medals to all the children. The local restaurants and voluntary organisations laid on a fantastic lunch for everyone who stayed to carry on the party throughout the afternoon. A local artist, Juliet Simpson was commissioned to produce a commemorative plaque that features a runner from both Olympic games. This is to be placed next to the Domesday plaque on the Seal Village Hall.Diamond Jubilee - There was a great celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee throughout the Parish. The Parish Council gave grants to all three wards towards their activities. In Seal everybody came together for a Parish Picnic on the recreation ground. There were bouncy castles for the children and everyone had a brilliant time despite the inclement weather.Stone Street had a fun day that was well supported and enjoyed by everyone there.Underriver had 3 days of festivities, starting on the Saturday with a celebration of games on the village green, a dinner and dance, and a floral celebration in the village church of St. Margaret’s. On Sunday there was a commemorative morning service and music festival in the afternoon and on Monday the celebrations concluded with a street party and lighting of a beacon.Youth Club - It is heart-warming to see the Youth Club thriving. See details on our website.Library - There is always a lot going on in our local library, including a new history club. See our website for details or pop along and make use of the various facilities.Affordable Housing - Following the Parish Council’s decision to pursue the provision of affordable housing, for the benefit of local people only, a small sub committee has been formed to assess in conjunction with English Rural Housing Association the preferred site. It is hoped that we can make good progress to the provision of the housing identified by the survey we have carried out.High Speed Broadband - The Parish Council recognises that the provision of high speed broadband is an essential requirement to both the rural and urban parts of our area. A group of people from within the Parish have teamed up with Gigaclear, an independent broadband provider, who will extend the fibre optic network to a substantial part of the parish. A sufficient number of people have registered interest in the scheme, and Gigaclearare now taking orders for a 1000mbs service that could be in operation by the

end of the year. Details of their website is below.Seal Fire Station - The fire station has sadly now closed, and the Parish Council has been handed the site back by Kent Fire & Rescue Service. We are now embarking on the process of finding a suitable use for the buildings, which will hopefully provide a community service and raise income for the Parish Council that is facing a challenging period of precept restriction.Planting - Following on from the success and good comments from you all, we will continue to have flower planters in Seal village and barrier baskets in Seal and Underriver. We are going to try again to put a planter in Stone Street although last year’s was stolen. If you have planters near your house please don’t forget to give them water particularly through the summer. We have also planted more daffodils in several locations in Seal.Roads and Road Safety - We have been trying hard to get Kent County Council to improve the safety of pedestrians over the railway bridge in Childsbridge Lane. The highway officers have come up with a scheme, which the Parish Council was happy with but getting the project approved has been painfully slow. We hope to see some positive action in the coming year. The stretch of A25 across Seal Chart is shortly to be restricted to a speed limit of 50 mph, which we hope will improve road safety.Bicycle stands will soon installed in Seal High Street and by the Library, to enable cyclists to park their bikes more securely. The Paralympic Legacy Project has funded these.A group of local people are organising a speed watch scheme in conjunction with Kent Police, which will hopefully reduce the speed of vehicles in a number of places in the Parish and improve road safety for all users. If you would like to join the team, please let us know.We have organised for the parking restriction to be changed in the bay in Seal High Street to a reduced period, to make it easer for people to pop in to the local shops. The number of potholes in the Parish’s roads continues to multiply at a pace. If you see or have had the misfortune to go down one, please report it to Kent County Council who is responsible for our roads. You can do that on their website detailed below or by telephone to 0845 247800Planning & Development Control Village Design Statements - Sevenoaks District Council have now formally adopted Seal and Underriver’s Village Design Statements as Supplementary Planning Documents for the Local Development Framework. If you are proposing to develop your property I recommend you read them as they give an insight into the type of development that is suitable for the area. They are available on the Parish and District Councils websites.

We hope to submit the third Village Design Statement to the District Council shortly.Localism - The Localism Acts have recently been passed by Government to enable local people to influence (not prevent) the type of development they want in their area. A group of people in the Parish have applied to the Planning Authority Sevenoaks District Council to set up a Neighbourhood Development Plan. The scheme is in its early stages, so I hope to be able to give you more information next year. The Parish Council looks at every planning application and gives a formal response to the Planning Authority as well as reviewing a number of consultation documents received through the year. Planning meetings are open to the public and details are on our website. And finally… If you have anything you wish to discuss with us, or any suggestions, our contact details are shown above, or are available on the Parish Council Website.Come along to our Annual Meeting to be held on Thursday 2nd May at 7.30 pm in The Seal Pavilion on the Recreation Ground. At the meeting Fidelity Weston of Kent Wildlife Trust will be giving a short talk on the management of Bitchet Common, which is in the centre of the Parish. The Parish of Seal is a wonderful place to live, and we are working to keep it that way for you. With best wishes Robin Watson

SEAL KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURSHello All,Just a quick e mail to thank those of you who came to help meet and greet last week, and to let you all know of the discussions that took place.Firstly, to let you all know, that on Saturday May 11th, there will be a local history day at Seal Library. The hope is, that there will be sufficient interest, to start a Historical Society for Seal. On the day,David Williams will lead a historical walk around the village, followed by refreshments at the library, where there will be an exhibition of old maps, photos, and artefacts. There will also be the opportunity to learn how to use the genealogy computer resources in the library. The exhibition will be set up from early April, so if you have any letters, maps, photos of old Seal, please contact Peter Mountfield at [email protected]. Lesley Edmeads at Seal Library has kindly offered to take in any photos or objects on loan for the local history show.Deborah from RAIN (Rescued Animals In Need) attended 2 of the sessions, and brought with her, information about how to offer homes to cats that RAIN have rescued. RAIN also have a neutering programme available to people with cats who are on benefits, and not able to afford to have them neutered. I have promised to send out further information about this, so please watch this space.Community Speedwatch - Anna Linley is looking for volunteers to assist with this project. So - if you are keen to see safer driving through our village, and have a little time to spare, please contact Anna at [email protected] Allotment Society has some plots available at the moment, so please let me know if you are interested, and I can point you in the right direction. Then finally, we have a few dates for your diaries:-Sat April 27th Help For Heroes Quiz at Seal Church Hall.Sun June 30th - St Peter and St Paul Patronal Festival. There will be a strawberry tea in the vicarage garden during the afternoon.Sat July 13th - A sponsored walk around Bewl Water.Sun Aug 25th - A Parish PicnicSat Sept 14th - Ride and Stride - a sponsored walk/bike ride around the local churches of KentSat Sept 21st - Seal Village FeteSat Oct 5th - Harvest Hog Roast - venue to be confirmed.Thur Dec 5th - Christmas Chaos. Hopefully, this may save having to press-gang people at the last minute! Many Thanks for your Continued Support,Marion [email protected]

Farmers’ Market AprilI don’t want to say ‘I told you so’ but!!!!The recent meat crisis has exposed not only just how complex and anonymous the systems are which have been developed by supermarkets to cut costs but how unscrupulous people have managed to exploit their loopholes. This is in complete contrast to Farmers’ Markets, where you can talk directly to the person who makes or rears the produce you are purchasing. You trust them because you know them and in return they rely wholly on your continuing custom, so have to be worthy of your trust. How often do we hear “Farmers’ markets are expensive” (often quoted by people who have never visited a Farmers Market). The Kent Farmers Market Association has done research comparing the price of regular shopping baskets at supermarkets and farmers’ markets, and it simply isn’t true. Because you are purchasing directly from the grower, there are no middlemen, no head office or shareholders; little transportation and no expensive shops to run. We look forward to seeing you at the market!!Farmers Market in April. New signs of life are just starting to emerge after a long, hard winter for farmers and producers. Gary’s Cauliflowers, cabbages, kale, purple sprouting and spinach are the vegetables of choice in April. Whilst Roger has many different types of lettuce to satisfy the desire for salads. Try the array of prepared and preserved products that add so much to our enjoyment of market visits such as pâtés, smoked fish and meat, gourmet fish cakes as well as home made cakes and chocolate Fish lovers will find sea bass, cod, halibut, cockles, and scallops all on offer. It is still too early for spring lamb so how about serving a wonderful joint of Annabelle’s home reared Aberdeen Angus or Sussex beef (priced well below that of the Supermarkets !). Mutton is good now. Poultry fans should try Guinea fowl. Keiron also has venison, hare, rabbit and wood pigeon and a good choice for the Easter weekend might be Wendy’s game pie, either served cold or hot with plenty of savoury gravy. Keep on cooking with rhubarb, and make it into cakes, crumbles and compotes. A really good rhubarb fool is a seasonal pleasure, especially when made with local cream as

the new grass is starting to add richness to the dairy produce. And local apples are still good as the storing varieties keep well into this month.See www.kfma.org.uk and click on Shipbourne to find out What’s on at the market

PLAXTOL LOCAL HISTORY GROUP MARCH 2013 MEETING

The Testimonies of five soldiers on the Western Front in the Great War.Our speaker Ian Walker, came at short notice to replace Christopher Jupp. Ian was himself in the Royal West Kent Regiment and was well qualified to talk to us on the Great War having also been head of history at Sevenoaks School. He illustrated his talk with extracts from the diaries and memoirs of Kentish soldiers. These were not “hardnosed memoirs” of those who had survived, but literature in their own right, our speaker said. Ernest Parker returning home from the Somme in 1916 felt a tug at the heart strings at seeing the white cliffs of Dover and hearing the names of the railway stations in Kent. Another soldier was Lord Amherst of Riverhead. Having been to Eton and Sandhurst he fought at the Battle of Loos in 1915. He was not the only soldier to write movingly of the sadness, utter exhaustion and lack of energy for the end of the war celebrations, that these survivors felt, as also Douglas Bell wrote in his diaries. Aubrey Smith, a ranker, of great character, born in Pembury, was deeply affected by the death of his horse and wrote of the inadequacy of equipment and training. Nevertheless, he said that it was the spirit of comradeship that kept them together, while they “slept, ate, swore and scratched themselves in the dugouts where the dead lay”. There were several allusions in the diaries of the vile stench of war in warm weather. Donald Dean lied about his age and went into the Royal West Kent Regiment. He was wounded four times, once at Ypres and once being hit by a shell. He won a VC for leadership and courage and lived to be 88. Although the Great War shattered our civilisation that had existed since the Middle Ages and killed some of the very best and the bravest, our speaker brought out the human aspects and indeedhumour, all of which kept us listening to every word. V.DussekDavid Gurney set out some photographs and press cuttings of local soldiers together with a gas mask from our archives. Our next meeting will be at 8pm on Tuesday 9th April when David Carder will talk on Some Historic Kentish Towns, including Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Maidstone and Rochester.

Thank youI’m going to hijack my space here from myself to say thank you…Do you remember that night when all traffic in the Sevenoaks area came to a standstill? If, like me, you were part of it, you wont have forgotten! My drive from Dunton Green to Kemsing took five hours. What amazed me though, was the people. On the first hill of terror (sheet ice) I realised that the people weren’t standing at the side of the road watching as people lost control of their cars – they were waiting, ready to push the cars that couldn’t make the hill.Approaching the second hill of terror, as my sister sat on speaker phone, talking me down from near hysteria, I realised there was another group of people, waiting to do the same. I can not describe the relief I felt when I saw them – at least I was less likely to fall back down the hill and into other cars. I passed a lovely lady standing in the arctic conditions, with a teapot and mugs of tea that she offered to all the people that passed. I would have killed for one – had it not been for the fact that I had been desperate for the toilet for about 4 hours at that point! The following day, I discovered through the power of social media that someone had posted that a lady with two young children was stranded as the trains were no longer running…and a complete stranger went and got her and the children, fed them and put them up for the night before driving them to the station this morning. That was more than lovely. My own little ‘thing’ though was that, about 3.5 hours into the epic journey I realised that I could continue to panic and grump, or I could enjoy it a bit. So I unwound my window and grinned like a mad thing at the cars on the other side of the road. Despite the fact that I must have looked like a loon a lot of people wound down their windows and had a chat. I met some really lovely people – we swapped times, distances, where the iciest patches were and where people were standing by to help. And how far we could have flown in the time we’d been stuck in our cars. Strangely, despite the fact that I was very cold, tired, hungry, and my bladder was bursting, I almost enjoyed myself! See what a smile can do? ) To all the heroes out there that night thank you – you were all fantabulous! Helen
