what our quality classroom would look like and then to our quality school. This is year two on our journey to become a Quality School and we like what we are seeing, hearing and feeling. We encourage you to ask your student about what they are learning and join us on this path.!

October is a very special month for students. The Cultural Exchange Workshop Tour will be making a stop at HTSC on October 3rd and 4th and students in grades 4 to 9 will take part. They will have an opportunity to meet with artists in five different areas and be

taught in dance, drama, visual arts, music and poetry. !

The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan will be coming to present her award to Levi Morin on October 9th. Other students have been awarded Northern Achievement Awards and will receive them that day as well. Her Honor, Vaughn Schofield, is looking forward to coming to Sandy Bay and meeting our students. She will visit the Daycare and the Pre-school as well while she is here. !

Teachers’ convention will follow Thanksgiving so all students will break for the week of October 14 – 18. !

Our first Quad of classes in high school end the 31st of October and students should have earned their first credits of this year. And of course, everyone is looking forward to Hallowe’en !

!Grade 8B!(Mr. Peter Moreau)!

The grade 8B classroom has been attempting to get down to work over this past week and a half, but has ben struggling with attendance issues and commitment to classwork and assignments.!

A major theme in Language Arts, health, and Visual Arts has been “Self-concept” and “What I Can Become”.!

It is about students taking charge of their own future, having a positive vision and taking a sure path to achieve that vision. It is also about being self-directed, strong in what you do, and not following

negative peer pressure.!

Being aware of your potential and taking care to do what you can to achieve it will result in success. Lot of learning

opportunities in Math, Career Guidance and all subject are being presented, and it is my hope that all Grade 8Bs will take those opportunities and have a great and successful year.!

!Nutrition Program!(Ms Sheryl Bear)!!Tansi! My name is Sheryl Bear. I am the Nutrition Worker at Hector Thiboutot Community School. First of all, I want to take this opportunity to welcome back everyone for

another school year. As the nutrition worker, I wanted to make parents and guardian aware of what I do and what is available for all students.!

HTCS introduced a breakfast program for the students two year ago. Breakfast includes the following:!

• Whole wheat toast!• Orange juice!• Yogurt tubes!• Fruit: bananas, oranges and apples!

I begin my day at 8:00 a.m. preparing toast and getting things ready. I am usually done serving at 9:15 a.m. The students come in and they are able to

enjoy a nutritious breakfast and they really love it. It’s a joy to work with them.!

I have two helpers: Crystal Morin and Tina Colomb. They are a big help and I enjoy working with them. If you have questions or want to stop by sometime and give me a hand, you are more than welcome. I am looking forward to a great year.!

Yours in nutrition,!Sheryl Bear!

!Sr. Girls Volleyball!(Ms. Jessica Beausoleil)! The 2013-2014 Sr. Girls Volleyball season got off to a very good start this year, with a group of dedicated players, committing to regular practices that began September 4th. Our first tournament was in Creighton September 13th-14th, where the T-Wolves competed against teams from La Ronge, Cranberry, and Creighton. We placed third in our pool after three games of round-robin, and went on to play against Flin Flon, where we were defeated for fifth place overall. The T-Wolves put forth

a solid effort, served well, played as a team, and most importantly – had fun! A special thank you to Brittney Morin, for helping run practices, and taking on the leadership role as Assistant Coach this year. Congratulations to Deanna Bear-Ross (Team Captain), Glenda Colomb, Shania Ray, Alana McDonald, Raven Sewap, Kendall Stewart Chakastew Wapan-Bear, and Tanisha Sinclair, for proudly representing Sandy Bay in Creighton. A second tournament has been booked for October 25th-26th in Porcupine Plain, and several home and away games are in the planning stages. T-Wolves Athletics clothing is now on sale until October 31st. All funds raised will go towards costs associated with traveling to games and tournaments. Any extra

fundraising dollars will carry over to the Sr. Girls Basketball Team once the volleyball season comes to a close. Order forms for T-Wolves Athletics clothing can be picked up at the school, and payments must be made in cash.

Adult and Youth sizes will be offered this year. Clothing options and prices are listed in the chart below, and samples are at the school for sizing. !

Fun with Food (Studies)!(Ms Stefanie Foster)!

Food Studies 10 is in full swing for the term. So far, we've had the opportunity to make cookies, muffins, brownies, cinnamon buns, bannock, tacos and pizza buns and we've still got a month to go! School staff and students know that our class is in session when delicious smells begin to overtake the hallways of HTCS - we're sure to always make a little extra to share around the building! Our class of 27 aspiring chefs has learned a lot already and is hoping to continue rolling right along developing our cooking

skills and investigating the complex world of health and nutrition.!

Here is the recipe we used for our delicious cinnamon buns:!

Cinnamon Buns!!Dough Ingredients!1 teaspoon white sugar !2 1/4 tsp yeast (or 1 pre-measured package)!1/2 cup warm water !1/2 cup milk !1/4 cup white sugar !1/4 cup butter !1 teaspoon salt !2 eggs, beaten !4 cups all-purpose flour!

Directions!

In a small bowl, dissolve 1 teaspoon sugar and yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes. Warm the milk in a small saucepan until it bubbles, then remove from heat. Mix in 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup butter and salt; stir until melted. Let cool until lukewarm.!

In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, milk mixture, eggs and 1 1/2 cup flour; stir well to combine. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a

lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.!

Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled

in volume, about 1 hour or wrap in plastic wrap and place in the fridge overnight. !

!Filling Ingredients!3/4 cup butter !3/4 cup brown sugar !then...!3/4 cup brown sugar !

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon !1/4 cup melted butter !1/2 cup walnuts (optional)!!!Directions!

While dough is rising, melt 3/4 cup butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in 3/4 cup brown sugar, whisking until smooth. Pour into greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Sprinkle bottom of pan with 1/2 cup walnuts; set aside. Melt remaining butter; set aside. Combine remaining 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup walnuts, and cinnamon; set aside.!

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, roll into an 18x14 inch rectangle. Brush with 2 tablespoons melted butter, leaving 1/2 inch border uncovered; sprinkle with brown sugar cinnamon mixture. Starting at long side, tightly roll up, pinching seam to seal. Brush with remaining 2 tablespoons butter. With serrated knife, cut into 15 pieces; place cut side down, in prepared pan. Cover

and let rise for about 30 minutes or until doubled in volume. !

Preheat oven to 375º F (190º C).!

Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool in pan for 3 minutes, then invert onto serving platter. Scrape remaining filling from the pan onto the rolls.!

!Too, too much fun in Grade 2!!(Ms Dalice Lavoie)! !

The school year has begun and 2B is falling into place! So far we have been: learning about patterns, practicing new sight words, exploring air and water in our environment and exploring the different communities we are

a part of. We are also having fun making play dough, creating pet rocks and beading bracelets. We are going to continue our creations in October and look forward to all autumn has to offer us !

!in and out of the classroom. !

!!Kinder News!!(Ms Nicole Pigeau)!!Updates from Room 106!In September we learned and practiced how to wash our hands properly.!

In October we will be working on letter and number recognition: ABCs and 123s. We will also be working on name recognition. You can work on name recognition at home, too! With your child practice writing their name for him/her

and then let the child try to write his/her name by him/herself. This little practice will set your child up for success in Kindergarten this year.!

☺ Please remember to send your child with a pair of indoor shoes! Our classroom floor is very chilly on small feet.!

!Notices!!• Dr. Trent Rae (Optometrist) will be in

!Literacy/Numeracy News!!Dear Parents,!

We began our Guided Reading Program in Grades 2 to 9 on September 30th 2013.

Grades K to 1 will begin on October 21st 2013. All students in grades 1 to 8 will take part in small group reading lessons. Volunteer Guided Reading group leaders are still needed to help run these small groups for one hour a day. If you are interested

in being a leader please contact the school and ask to speak to an LNC teacher. !

Our first Reading Achievement Awards Assembly for this school year will be scheduled for the first week of December. Students who have reached our

benchmark levels of 6, 12, 17, 22, 24 and 27 will be receiving awards. We will send invitations to the parents about a week before the ceremony.!

If your child is not moving up, it is likely for one of three reasons:!

1. They are having a lot of problems with reading and need more help.!

2. They are not coming to school to take part in the program, or they refuse to take part when they are here.!

3. They are at a higher level, which requires a great deal more time to complete.!

Please talk to your child's teacher for more information.!

We want to see our students be successful in school. Please help by getting them here every day on time.!

If you need more information, please contact LNC Teachers.!
