Editorial
The Cople News financial year is the calendar year and now is a
good time to review how we did in 2012. The magazine changed
from a subscription and advertising base, with a circulation of
225 copies per month, to an all advertising financed publication
delivered free to every home in Cople and a circulation of 360
copies. Thanks to the willing support of advertisers the
transition went extremely well. The magazine income was
£2,024 and the expenditure was £2,123. The shortfall of £99
will be taken from the reserve accumulated by Andrew and Jo
Chillingsworth. I did my planning assuming a print run of 325
copies, each of 48 or 52 pages but both of these figures had to
be revised up in the light of experience. Our expenses are
almost all on printing with a small amount spent on postage.
Our tireless band of distributors are vital in keeping costs down
and I can’t thank them enough. This year looks promising and
we should break even. We have a comforting reserve and
therefore I am happy spend all our in year revenue on the
magazine.
I would like Cople News to report every thing that happens in the
Village. My thanks go to all who have written about church,
sporting, social, school, council, musical and community events,
in addition to numerous one off articles. The “Wild about Cople”
and “Lawn Doctor” pieces deserve special mention. Thanks also
to the photographers in Cople for all their work. New ideas are
very welcome if we are to keep the magazine fresh and
entertaining.
I would like to welcome some new advertisers. On the next
page you will see “Happy Toes” run by Sarah Greenaway and on
page 26 the auctioneers W & H Peacock and Julian Biggs, the
chimney sweep, have joined us.
The Cople News team wish all our readers a happy and
prosperous New Year.

Letter from the Vicarage
The ringing of bells full circle, by means of a rope and a wheel is
unique to the British Isles, a few former British colonies and the
area around Verona in Italy. Change-ringing in the English
speaking countries has evolved over the last 350 years. Today
there are over 5,000 rings of five or more bells on which change
ringing can be practised. They are mainly in Anglican churches
but there is a growing number of ringers in other Christian
denominations most notably among Roman Catholics. It is
estimated that there are about 35,000 active ringers and
probably as many who no longer ring.
Bell ringing is much more difficult than it looks or sounds. For
several years we have not had enough experienced ringers to
ring regularly either on a Sunday morning or for weddings.
Recently Mike Vacher has been teaching some new people how
to ring and is holding practices on a Tuesday evening. The hope
is that they will be able to ring more often during the coming
year.
There is an ancient tradition to ring out the old year and to ring
in the new year. We want to revive this on Sunday 13th January
at 6pm. The ringing will take place before and after the first of
our new monthly “Songs of Praise “services. We will be helped
by neighbouring bell ringers from Northill. Their help is much
appreciated but if they keep winning the pub quiz night I am
beginning to wonder whether our friendship will last. Which
reminds me as you may have noticed there are six bells in our
tower, not five. Maybe we should tell the pub in case they want
to change their name.
Also I do hope that you will be able to join us for the service as
we will dedicate the new book case in memory of Pete Moore.
This has been paid for jointly by the Church and Parish Council
as Pete was both churchwarden and chairman. of the Parish
Council. There will be refreshments after the service although I
suspect that most ringers will decide to adjourn to the pub,
which incidentally is another old tradition.

Anniversary of Baptisms
Once again we invite all children who have been baptised in our
church, or elsewhere to celebrate their baptism. This year it will
be during the Family service on Sunday 6th January at 11.15am.
We invite you to bring your baptism candles with you and we
will give you a cake to celebrate.
Please do not worry if you cannot find your candle as there are
plenty of candles available in the Church. This year the service
falls on Epiphany and we will celebrate “Jesus as the Light of the
world”

Race Night Saturday 24th November
Thank you very much to everyone who helped to make our race
night at the end of November such a success. We are grateful
to everyone who supported the event and to all who provided
food and served it. We raised £813 of which we will receive half
as it was organised jointly with Willington
Our next event is a quiz night on Saturday 23rd March so please
put the date in your diary now.

Tools for Self Reliance
Our church is aiming to raise £1000 within the Benefice during the coming year as our mission project. We wish to support two charities in Africa.
Firstly, single mums in Uganda. Tools for Self-Reliance is doing something about this in partnership with the Single Parents Association of Uganda, offering 30 women the opportunity to escape a life of poverty by learning sewing machine skills that will enable them to earn a living. The idea is to encourage sustainable livelihoods. At the end of the training they will get a sewing machine start-up kit. It won’t just be the women who benefit, as their children and the wider community will gain too. There will be enough money generated to pay for the children to go to school.
Secondly, the Bicycle Repair Project. In Ghana bicycles are an essential means of getting about, but the roads are rough and
getting bikes repaired is far from straight forward. There isn’t such a thing as a local bike shop. Even if there were, few people could afford to buy new parts, let alone a new bike. Tools for Self-Reliance trains young boys, who have dropped out of school, to become bicycle mechanics and helps them to set up
their own businesses. It is a practical attempt to help reverse the drift to the cities of people from rural areas who are unable to support themselves.
Our Lent giving Benefice service on 30th June, Rich Man Poor Man Lunch, will support this. We have other supporting activities in mind – needle workers and cyclists should watch this space!

I would like to thank everyone who has helped make my
Christmas Pudding project the success it has been. My thanks
include not only those who have asked me for a pudding, but
also those who have helped me with ingredients. I have made
over fifty puddings, and the very generous response from
readers of Cople News, friends and family means that over £400
will be going towards the fund raising needed for my London
Marathon Run in April 2013.
Local firms have been very supportive and have contributed with
ingredients. They are: Waitrose - Goldington Road, Tesco -
Riverfield Drive, Whole Foods Bedford, M&S - Midland Road,
Bridge Farm - Girtford Bridge, Gunns Bakery - Sandy, The Five
Bells - Cople. Their contributions have really helped me meet
the costs.

Wild About Cople
Here’s something seasonal for you. We all know the song ‘The
Twelve Days of Christmas’ which has, when you think about it,
lots of references to birds in it’s lyrics so lets explore it a bit
further. . .
“On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me”.
12 Drummers Drumming
11 Pipers Piping
10 Lords-a-leaping
9 Ladies dancing
8 Maids-a-milking
7 Swans-a-swimming – sometimes the swans are replaced by
‘squabs’ ie; young pigeons. Swans are royal symbols and
technically all the swans in Great Britain are still owned by the
Queen. They are also connected with love, fidelity to each other
and romance so to give seven swans would be considered a fine
gift to receive from your true love!
6 Geese-a-laying – sometimes ‘ducks-a-laying’. Again this
could refer to the value of having geese that are laying eggs
(and having 6 geese laying eggs would be very valuable). This
could also refer to the folklore surrounding the goose laying the
golden egg.
5 Gold Rings – the alternative is sometimes ‘golden rings’ or ‘5
Goldspinks’. A Goldspink is an old country name for the
Goldfinch, that attractive finch with its red, yellow and black
markings which was once kept as a cage bird for its colours and
attractive song (now illegal, thankfully). There is also a
possibility that the ‘ring’ may not refer to jewellery at all but to
birds with a ‘ring’ marking around the neck ie; the ring-necked
pheasant.
4 Colly Birds – sometimes ‘calling birds’, ‘canaries’ or
‘Mockingbirds’ is used as alternatives. The name ‘Colly bird’ is an
old name for a blackbird.
3 French Hens – the ‘three French hens’ usually stood for
‘Faith, Hope and Love’.
2 Turtle Doves – Turtle doves were traditionally considered to
be the ultimate example of love and fidelity as they were
supposed to pair for life and show true devotion to each other.
33
January 2013
Unfortunately, recent research has shown the opposite to be the
case and males turtle doves are very promiscuous.
And a Partridge in a Pear Tree – as this song is considered to
be French in origin then this line more than likely refers to the
French or Red-legged partridge as opposed to our, native,
English or Grey partridge. It is believed that the ‘pear tree’ is a
corruption of the French (and Latin) word for the Partridge
family: Perdix. So the last line may originally have been ‘A
partridge, one partridge’.
The song, or more properly, the chant, probably began as a
‘memories and forfeit’ game where a leader recited a verse, then
each of the players repeated the words then the leader would
add another verse and so on until one of the players made a
mistake; they would then have to pay a penalty ie; giving a kiss
or a sweet. This is how the song was described in its earliest
known printed version, in 1780. It is believed to be French in
origin but may go back even further in history.
In the countryside around Cople the fields and ditches are all
very wet and sodden but the hedgerows are still full of berries
and the winter thrushes; the blackbirds, redwings and fieldfares
are taking full advantage of the seasonal food.
Due to berry shortages in their usual breeding and wintering
areas in Scandinavia and Siberia, Waxwings are in this area in
some numbers. These beautiful birds can be seen in small flocks
in trees where there are good berry crops and are very distinct
with their neat cream
and buffish pinky-
brown plumage with
blobs of red, like
sealing wax (where
their name comes
from) and yellow
markings on the
wings and tail and
with small crests on
their head and a
black ‘bandit’ mask
across the eyes and

This Month’s Gardening Tasks
Best wishes to all of you for 2013, and many thanks to everyone
who has been in touch over the course of the past year.
Needless to say, should you have any queries about anything in
your garden, please do not hesitate to drop me a line.
Frost, although excellent at breaking up heavy clay rich soils
that have already been dug, is arguably the greatest threat to
our beloved plants and my advice to you is simply this: if you
have any doubts to a plant’s hardiness, that is, is ability to
withstand the freezing weather, err on the side of caution and
wrap it up in bubble wrap, horticultural fleece or hessian or
pretty much anything. I use an old piece of sack cloth that is
probably older than me! And yes, it is in far better condition
than its owner! I place a long cane in the centre of the plant so
that it is around 12” (30cm) taller and then drape the material
over the top, tent like. I also like to make sure there is a good
layer on the ground keeping the roots protected but an
appropriate mulch around the base of the plant can also be very
useful at this time of the year. Leaf mould, compost, well rotted
manure, all can be used but don’t forget: ericaceous plants such
as Camelias, Rhododendrons, Azalias, Pieris will all need a
material that provides them with the acidity they require. I tend
towards a generous layer of ericaceous compost that not only
protects against frost but can work its way down throughout the
winter giving the plants what they want.
According to some reports, unusual numbers of Waxwings are
expected this month so along with bird seed, suet and nuts,
chop up some apple too and you might just get a glimpse of one
of the most elegant birds we get in this country.
By the way, many thanks to all of you who attempted the
fiendishly difficult Christmas Quiz that was featured in
December’s magazine. Answers and winners announced next
month.
