From the Editors - Derek Week 12 has arrived and with it the second last week of lectures before we all hit the stu-vac period. Whether you‟ve been meticulously preparing notes and attending lectures each week or whether you‟re unwrapping the plastic covers off your textbooks for the first time and enjoying that new book smell, this is surely an important period for all. Soon the law library, ASB and main library will be jam- packed with students intensely cramming a semester‟s worth of information into their heads, the smell of cup noodles, coffee and late night take-away from Kensington pervading the air giving it a comforting and familiar aroma that is synonymous with exam period. Just remember amidst all this exam fever that the deadlines for many external competitions have been extended and participating in them is a great way to further improve your skills in competitions as well as gain invaluable experience competing against the wider law student body, for UNSW pride of course. Seeking volunteers for the Schools Legal Education Group (SLEG). SLEG is a social outreach initiative with a 32 year history at UNSW. Law student presenters from UNSW attend high schools to provide useful legal information to students on a youth to youth platform. We provide training and all materials. ALSA CONFERENCE-MELBOURNE

In July 2012, Melbourne will be hosting the Australian Law Students' Association annual conference between 9th - 16th July 2012. This conference will see over 500 law students descend on Melbourne for Activities (including two Gala dinners, Pub Crawls and Cocktail Evenings), Legal Education Forums, the National Championships for law competitions (such as Mooting and Client Interview) and the tri-annual council meeting for ALSA. The UNSW Law Society is providing subsidies for General Delegates to the cost of $650. The full cost of General Delegate Gold Conference passes is $850, which means successful applicants will incur the costs of $250 to attend the Conference (plus flight costs). Applications for subsidies close on COB 28th May. Successful applicants will be notified by 4th June. NSW YOUNG LAWYERS – HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE

The latest monthly bulletin of the NSW Young Lawyers Human Rights Committee has been released and it contains plenty of exciting opportunities for students to become actively involved in the Committee. Whether it be joining one of the many working groups run by our members or attending one of our upcoming events, the Human Rights Committee is always looking for motivated young lawyers or students who have the passion and desire to drive exciting projects which make an impact. The Human Rights Committee is dedicated to achieving its objectives of:

raising awareness about Australian and international human rights issues, including the Rule of Law

lobbing and commenting on legislative and policy changes at both federal and state levels

providing education to the legal profession and wider community about Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

The Young Lawyers International Law Committee seeks to promote informed discussion amongst their members on international law in Australia and to provide a distinctive Australian perspective on contemporary international legal issues and developments. Membership is open to young lawyers working in the field and law students who have an interest in international law. Students can find out more about the Committee at the NSW Young Lawyers website, and can join the Committee by signing up to the mailing list.

The Committee has monthly meetings, held on the last Thursday of every month. The next meeting will be held at 6pm on the 31st of May, at the NSW Law Society (Level 2, 170 Phillip Street, Sydney). Coming to a Committee meeting is a great way to meet young practitioners, build your professional network, and score some free pizza, wine and cheese. The Committee will also be holding a number of events in coming months, including an international law careers event on the 9th of August, and an international arbitration moot in Semester Two. Experience as a participant in the NSW Law Society's Mock Trial Program when in high school; Studying law at university currently either as part of a combined degree or alone. Successful applicants shall assist Robert Nixon, one of the NSW Law Society's Volunteer Solicitor Mock Magistrates in the performance of his role in judging any mock trial allocated to him during the hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at minimum on any day Monday to Friday (excluding school & public holidays) at any allocated high school where such trial is to be held. Successful applicants shall jointly perform with the mock magistrate all the duties listed for the mock magistrate in the mock trial manual 2012. Linkz is partnering with the Central Australian Youth Link Up Service (CAYLUS) to support their programs delivered to young Indigenous people and the broader community as a whole. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain a long-term understanding of remote community life while playing a meaningful role in the delivery of important programs and services.

What will volunteers be doing? Volunteers will be integral to the everyday running of a popular local computer and internet room in the community, as well as providing support to the Youth Program more generally. Volunteer will be expected to work 37.5 hours a week, 30 of these being contact hours with the majority spent supervising the computer room use and helping with any issues that arise. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to bring new ideas to the community. Costs & Dates All costs for volunteers will be covered, including flights, transport and accommodation. Additionally, volunteers will receive approx. $200/week to cover the cost of their food and will have the opportunity to travel to Alice Springs once a month. The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot

Court Competition is one of the most traditional and prestigious moots in the world, having been around for over 50 years.

Over 500 teams from 87 countries around the world compete annually at the Jessup, with around 130 teams advancing through the international rounds in Washington DC.

UNSW has a grand tradition in this competition, and we invite you to be a part of it.

Participants compete first in the Australian National Rounds held in Canberra in early February, with the final held in the High Court before one High Court judge and two other eminent judges.

The finalists proceed to the International Rounds held in Washington DC in late March / early April.

The problem always involves at least four complex issues, and takes the form of a case before the International Court of Justice.

Teams prepare written and oral arguments for both applicant and respondent states.

Students selected for the Jessup team are expected to not undertake work or other commitments during the summer vacation.

An information session will be held on May 31st at 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

NATIONAL SHINE LAWYERS TORTS MOOT

Application deadline has been extended This entry-level moot provides students with an excellent opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of an intervarsity mooting competition and improve their knowledge of tort law. A team of 4 competitors will be selected to compete at the Queensland University of Technology in the first week of August. Competitors‟ expenses will attract the financial support of Lawsoc upon application. All students who have participated in internal and/or external mooting competitions are encouraged to apply. The AAT Mooting competition is an excellent competition for mooters of all levels to participate in. In 2010, a UNSW team won the national AAT Mooting Competition, and appeared in the grand-final before the Honourable Justice Garry Downes. UNSW will select up to 3 teams to compete in the 2012 competition, each comprising 3 members: 2 students who act as Senior and Junior Counsel and 1 who will act as a researcher. Competitors will participate in up to 5 knockout rounds between 1 June - 7 October, depending on their success in the competition. Competitors‟ expenses will attract the financial support of Lawsoc upon application. Knowledge of administrative law is not required – competitors who have not completed Administrative Law will be set a small number of readings in the holidays to provide them with the necessary background knowledge. FAMILY LAW MOOT Universities from all around Australia take part in the competition, which is run with the co-operation of the Family Law Courts and the Family Court of Western Australia. The competition will be adjudicated by the Honourable Justice Rod Burr AM. This year, the Preliminary Rounds will be held in July and August in Sydney. The National Final will take place during the 15th Biennial National Family Law Conference which will be held in Hobart from 14-17 October 2012. The winning university receives the perpetual „Colin Davies Trophy‟ and a cash prize of $550, and the second placed team receives a cash prize of $275. The Family Law Section meets the reasonable costs for teams who may need to travel interstate to compete, and UNSW Law Society will subsidise registration and some other costs. NATIONAL INTERVARSITY WOMEN’S MOOTING COMPETITION

In 2012, the National Women‟s Moot will be held in Sydney during the Semester 2 Mid-Semester Break. The Women‟s Moot is aimed at addressing the equity issues facing women at the bar and is

the only national moot in which all competitors must be female.

Last year, the Tournament was held in the mid-semester break in Semester 2 and will again be held in this break in 2012. The tournament was hosted by SULS and UTSLSS, and saw 12 teams from the University of Sydney, University of NSW, University of Technology Sydney, Macquarie University, Newcastle University, University of Queensland, Griffith University and the University of Western Australia compete in 4 preliminary rounds for the inaugural title.

GIBBS CONSTITUTIONAL LAW MOOT

Applications open to compete in the 2012 Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition. Application deadline: 30th May 2012 at 5pm. The 2012 Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition will be held from Thursday 11th of October until Sunday 14th of October. The Grand Final will be judged by the Honourable Chief Justice Robert French AC in the High Court of Australia. In addition to the competitive side of the competition, there will also be a number of social events run over the course of the four days. This will include a cocktail evening, karaoke night/pub crawl and the Closing Gala Dinner. UNSW will be registering up to two teams, comprising of either two or three members each.
