CAMPUS (CONNECTION) IN THIS (ISSUE) License Plate Update on Page 2 The (1940s) Donna (Whitwam) Roembach, G’44, recently contacted the Alumni Office to share that she celebrated her 90th birthday in July. Donna writes, “I am the last of eight children in my family. I am enjoying good health and still teach a Sunday school class! I think of my days at Friends often.” Happy belated birthday, Donna! Jean (Moore) Meenen, G’41, also wrote to us since the last class letter. “The Campus Connection which I received today spurred me on to reminiscing – first to the days I spent in Miss Joy’s classes learning French, to the days spent in the music department singing with the Elizabethan Singers. The Singing Quakers, led by Dean Irwin took the music department through the dust storms performing in numerous high schools in the western part of Kansas. The dust storms can never be forgotten. Our Mikado costumes were so full of dust and heavy makeup it was difficult to wear after the first day out. There is a ‘certain something’ about Friends. Some of my friends at the time went to Wichita State University, and wouldn’t consider that ‘little school,’ but I’d be willing to bet there are more Friends grads that have had successful careers and ‘made names’ for themselves. Much water has gone over the dam, but memories are forever and Friends University will never be forgotten. God Bless America and Friends University.” Jean also shared that she and her husband Allen have been married 66 years. They have three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. There is a ‘certain something’ about Friends. Some of my friends at the time went to Wichita State University, and wouldn’t consider that ‘little school,’ but I’d be willing to bet there are more Friends grads that have had successful careers and ‘made names’ for themselves.

Dr. Sheryl (Conde) Riney, G’82/M’89, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the age of 52.

Her career included 20 years at Friends University as director of admissions and vice president of student affairs. Following this, she worked in administration at the Wichita Independent School and taught in the graduate program for Southwestern College.

At the time of her death, Sheryl was a leadership consultant at Wichita State University. She was a

devoted Christian and a member of Northridge Friends Church where she served as the leadership clerk of the congregation.

Sheryl had the gift of showing her love for any person she came in contact with in a deep, personal and passionate way. She is survived by her husband, Doug Riney, and their son, Paul Riney Jr.

Memorials have been set up at Intrust Bank for a Student Education fund for their son, Paul.

Fall 2012 • The (1940s)

Friends University celebrated the inauguration of its 13th president, Dr. T.J. Arant, March 30, 2012. The ceremony took place at 2 p.m. in Garvey Gymnasium in the Garvey Physical Education Center.

Approximately 600 students, alumni, parents, friends and members from the local community were in attendance, along with nearly 50 delegates from visiting colleges who showed their support.

Rodney Pitts, G’82, chair of Friends University Board of Trustees, presided over the installation of the president, followed by Dr. Arant’s inaugural address.

Music was provided by the Friends University student brass quintet, the University Concert Band and the Singing Quakers.

A cocktail-style reception in McKay Gymnasium at the Casado Campus Center followed the ceremony, with music provided by the Friends University jazz ensemble and string ensemble. Guests enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres provided by Sodexo catering services.

This historic occasion was a rare opportunity to highlight Friends University and its place within the realm of higher education and the regions it serves.

HOMECOMING 2012 Sa

In this issue of Campus Connection, we are pleased to spotlight faculty member and alumnus Dr. Jim Smith, G’84, and his notable book series,

which includes the titles: “The Good and Beautiful God,” “The Good and Beautiful Life” and “The Good and Beautiful Community.”

Called the Apprentice series, this set of three books was written as a curriculum for spiritual transformation. The books are meant to be read as a group with a discussion at the end of each chapter. Additionally, each chapter contains “soul-training exercises” for becoming apprentices of Jesus.

Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor of Religion at Friends University and has started the APRENTIS Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation.

Dr. Smith’s involvement with Friends has been vital in the development of these books, as he field-tested each book by partnering with Campus Ministries to lead student groups through it and get their feedback on the books.

The books are available at the Friends University bookstore, many local bookstores and online at InterVarsity Press at www.ivpress.com.
