In the 2012-2013 season, First Stage

served over 138,000 young people and their parents, grandparents, and educators through our professional theater performances, Theater Academy, and Theater in Education programs.

We had a successful season on stage, opening with the hit BIG, THE MUSICAL, a Theatre for Young Audiences

adaptation developed in collaboration with Adventure Theatre MTC in Maryland. Our holiday show – RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER® - brought the animated classic to life and became the highest-selling First Stage production in our history, with full houses for nearly all 61 of its school and public performances. The Wisconsin Cycle – a series of new plays developed and produced over six seasons honoring the history and people of our state – continued this year with TO THE PROMISED LAND, a world premiere by local actor and playwright Jonathan Gillard Daly. TO THE PROMISED LAND was later broadcast on MPTV in April 2013 as part of its Young Performers Initiative, made possible with a generous grant from the Helen Bader Foundation. PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL delighted audiences of nearly 24,000, exceeding its ticket sales projections even before the show’s opening. With support from the Brewers Community Foundation, JACKIE AND ME opened just in time for the start of the baseball season and allowed First Stage to connect with audiences through the celebration of American’s favorite pastime and one athlete’s perseverance through segregation and racism.

In August 2012, First Stage piloted Next Steps, a one-week Theater Academy session developed for students on the autism spectrum. After its well-received summer session, Next Steps returned for a one-week session during spring break at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center. Next Steps further developed with offering sensory-friendly performances of both First Steps Series shows – FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS and Lois Ehlert’s MOLE HILL STORIES. This new program earned First Stage the Business Journal’s Eureka Award, recognizing creativity and innovation in business, the arts, education, health care, and other areas.

As Wisconsin’s leader in arts-integrated education in schools, First Stage served over 20,000 students in the 2012-13 school year through innovative programming that integrates theater into the curricula through programs such as Pre- and Post-Show Workshops, Teaching Through Theater Workshops, the Bully Ban Workshop, and Literacy Residencies in nearly 500 classrooms throughout southeastern Wisconsin. In spring 2013, First Stage announced its partnership with PAVE as part of the Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education initiative. This program is designed to promote educational partnerships between arts organizations and school systems through professional arts education training for teachers. For this initial three year collaboration, First Stage will serve as a Strategic Partner with select PAVE schools, offering PAVE teachers extensive professional development workshops that focus on integrating dramatic activities into traditional curriculum.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of First Stage, we are incredibly grateful to the community for its continued support and inspiration, and look forward to transforming more lives through theater in the coming season.

Sincerely,

Alec FraserPresident, Board of Directors

First Stage has offered Theater in Education programs for all 26 years of the company’s existence with the goal of inciting young people’s desire for learning and helping classroom teachers explore curriculum using interactive, imaginative and integrated methods. Through our professional theater performances, classroom workshops and residencies, we encourage students of all ages to experience their world differently and find new connections to their school curriculum. First Stage offers programs that boost critical literacy skills, increase state standardized test scores and help teachers learn new and creative ways to teach. As schools are forced to spend less on arts programming, First Stage’s education programs cleverly blend the arts with the standard curriculum, allowing students to learn traditional academic subjects through creativity and self expression.

Dynamic Theater in Education programs that promote active learning in our schools and our community

“first stage’s education program is the perfect combination of the arts, developmentally appropriate curriculum, creativity and most of all fun. my students had so many wonderful experiences that will help them develop into happy, problem solving and critically thinking lifelong learners! This season alone, First Stage reached 20,000 students in nearly 500 classrooms through our professional theater performances and over 2,000 classroom workshops and residencies.

ConneCt ions: A the AteR in eduCAt ion pRoGRAm

First Stage created the comprehensive in-school arts education program, Connections, to support students and teachers in City of Milwaukee schools who have minimal access to arts education as a result of budget cuts. The Connections Program develops creative thinking, logical reasoning, public speaking, and helps students improve their Emotional Intelligence.

First Stage is in each individual classroom on four separate occasions throughout the school year. The program includes:

• Tickets to a First Stage production• Free bussing to and from the theater• Pre-show workshops and post-show workshops• Teaching Through Theater workshop

connEcTions ProGrAm ouTcomEs:

First Stage continues to implement a quantitative pre- and post-workshop evaluation tool that tests the Connections program’s impact on students’ learning before and after program participation. The survey tests students’ ability to meet the following objectives:

1) relate a clearer understanding of the values presented within the play 2) demonstrate a more defined concept of the play’s characters 3) correctly identify answers to production-specific academic questions twice as often 4) show a higher level of understanding of, and empathy for, the characters

First Stage evaluated third through eighth grade classrooms that attended the production JACKIE AND ME in April and May 2013. This year’s pre and post survey tested students’ ability to identify and apply Jackie Robinson’s nine character values to the production and their everyday lives. Jackie’s values include courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence. Through the JACKIE AND ME workshops, students explored these character traits by engaging in tableaux (frozen pictures of actions/characters in a scene), character walks (walking as a certain character/emotion), and speaking from different characters’ points of view.

Overall, students increased their understanding of character traits by 15% after program participation.

The youth showcased their ease with the language and knowledge of the Bard as they shared the beloved SONNET #18, scenes from A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, an Elizabethan song with dance and an original sonnet written by a cast member. Scholarships were provided for students to continue studying Shakespeare during the 2013 Summer Theater Academy.

In spring 2013, First Stage began a partnership with the Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education initiative. The Partners in Education program was designed to promote educational partnerships between arts organizations and school systems through professional arts education training for teachers. For this initial three year collaboration, First Stage will serve as a Strategic Partner with select PAVE schools. PAVE champions good governance and visionary

leadership in schools while equipping them with resources to help young people succeed. Through a partnership with the Kennedy Center, First Stage will offer PAVE teachers extensive professional development workshops that focus on integrating dramatic activities into traditional curriculum and engaging students in their studies. In addition, First Stage will work with the schools to evaluate arts-based learning in the classroom and will provide in-school theater education workshops and/or residencies.

Thanks to the support of the Helen Bader Foundation MPTV filmed First Stage’s production of TO THE PROMISED LAND. After post-production was complete, the Helen Bader Foundation hosted a screening and reception at their office. TO THE PROMISED LAND was aired on MPTV on April 19 and 20, 2013. This broadcast was part of MPTV’s new Young Performers Initiative (YPI), a statewide effort to raise the visibility of the arts, celebrate the creative achievements of Wisconsin youth and those who inspire them.

“i must express how important a role first stage plays in an

urban city where crime, drugs, and violence are exposed
