1 U2ngulu News uThungulu Health District On the 07th of June 2012, MEC for Health Dr S Dhlomo delivered his budget speech for the 2012/2013 financial year at KwaZulu Natal Leg- islature. The MEC touched on various aspects that concerned health most. He also expatiated on the decreasing maternal and mortality. “In an effort to reduce this figure and strengthen mother and child health we are developing centers of mother and child services Ngwelezana and Lower Umfolozi plus Newcas- tles and Madadeni hospitals have been select- ed for this initially.” said Dr Dhlomo. He also congratulated Eshowe hospital for being the Award recipient of the cleanest hospital in the country. He also mentioned that ,the EMS is one of the three core functions within the Department of Health: aimed at providing quality efficient and caring emergency medical and rescue services throughout the province. The MEC also break down the infrastructure development that are under hospital Revitali- zation programme. “We have completed phase 1 which was the construction of the mother lodge project and this was handed over to Lower Umfolozi Dis- trict war Memorial hospital in 2011, at Ngwelezane hospital the upgrade to the hos- pital is ongoing project. A new Therapy De- partment and a psychiatric outpatients clinics are due for completion this year” said Dr Dhlo- mo. He also mentioned kwaMbiza clinic as one of the clinic that was opened in the past financial year. The budget was allocated in accordance with the department priorities. Dhlomo delivered his budget speech for the

2012/2013 financial year at KwaZulu Natal Leg-

islature. The MEC touched on various aspects

that concerned health most.

He also expatiated on the decreasing maternal

On the 21 June 2012 at Wentworth, MEC

for Health Dr S Dhlomo handed over the 455

new ambulances to Health Districts. ‘As we

release these Ambulances to our communi-

ties, I want to indicate that we are simultane-

ously launching our ‘Operation bring back

order’ campaign that will impact on all ser-

vices we offer’ said Dr Dhlomo

This is one of the core outcomes of govern-

ment to ensure ‘ a long and healthy life for all

South Africans” and that has to be achieved

and measured in four specific areas which

are:

Improve life expectancy

Improve mother and child health and sur-

vival

Reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS and TB

Improve health systems effectiveness

uThungulu Health District received 17 Ambu-

lances. The allocation at uThungulu Health Dis-

trict was done as follows: Northern Zone– 6,

( Empangeni-2, Esikhawini-1, Ntambanana-1,

kwaMbonambi-1 and Nseleni-1) Southern Zone

– 4, ( Eshowe-1, Gingindlovu-1, Mbongolwane-

2) Western Zone– 7 (Melmoth-2, Nkandla-3,

Ekhombe– 2)

The above allocation was done based on the

followings:

1.For pre-hospital emergency ambulances,

each Zone was given the amount of ambulanc-

es according to the demand.

2. Obstetric and Inter facility transfer ambulanc-

es were allocated according to the number of

hospitals who have a high demand for transfers

of patients and MOU’s in the districts.

National Core standards Team visits at Catherine Booth Hospital

The 2012 Parliament’s Sport Day

The 2012 Parliament's Sport Day was held at uMfolozi Sub district on the 12 of April

2012, where Department Health rendered their services, which is giving the wheelchairs,

walking sticks to the needy and screening of Chronic diseases. The event started with a 5

km walk as part of improving life expectancy.

The District conducted a very fruitful one day mental health workshop on the 6th for SAPS- Empangeni Cluster & on the

7th June 2012 for EMRS officials.. The purpose was to scale up the investment of mental health for a long a healthy life for

all uThungulu District Municipality citizens. The workshop was facilitated by the Psychiatrist from the Department of Psy-

chiatry at Ngwelezana Hospital and Mrs L Mkize- Provincial Deputy Manager (Mental Health & Substance Abuse Pro-

gramme) and Ms N Dube- District mental Health Coordinator. Mrs Mkize’s presence was a blessing in disguise for us be-

cause she responded to the challenges that we are facing as uThungulu Mental Health Forum during the workshop.

UThungulu Health District Office organized a Employee Wellness Day commemoration ‘Move for

Health’ month on the 25th of May 2012. Various health related services were rendered by different or-

ganizations.

Gems and Old Mutual were doing Health screening i.e BMI, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, HB and HCT.

CANSA was doing Cervical Cancer examinations

Optometrist also and Dentist did a free assessment but services were changed

Ejimini Fitness Club offered assistance by giving audio system to do Aerobics.

The participants were judged on their performance in activity and won gifts eight 8 vouchers and two

ejimini bags with T-shirt inside.

Why Health and Safety?

The chief goal of the occupational health and

Safety program is to prevent Occupational injuries

and illness by anticipating, recognizing, evaluat-

ing, and controlling occupational health and Safety

Hazards.

The program is guided by a number of prescripts

but the main one being the OHS Act no. 85 of

1993

Whose responsibility?

The OHS Team consists of Health and Safety Pro-

fessional, Occupational Health Nurse, Occupation-

al Medicine Physician, the Employees, Senior and

Line Management, and others coopted as per

need of the facility.

All members must act in concert to provide infor-

mation and activities supporting the other parts to

achieve the overall goal of healthy and safe work

environment. The separate functions of the team

members are administratively linked to effect a

successful and smoothly run program. But the

most vital component of an effective Program is

the Senior and Line Management Commitment.

Looking at the previous year.

Audits

The OHS audit tool was used for OHS audits

Assessments/ Audits were done twice this year.

All Facilities (100%) audited in May 2011 and 88%

facilities in November 2011.

District average for UThungulu:

May 2011: 68.4%., lowest 53.5% and 79.5% being

the highest score.

November 2011: 72.9%, lowest being 55% and

83.5% being the highest score.

Where are we going?

OHS Program UThungulu shall ensure that all health facilities embark on the Health Risk Assessment during 2012/2013 financial year. The process shall start with Hospitals and then fixed PHC facilities.

Handing over of wheel chairs donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

On the 31 May 2012 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints donated wheel chairs to seventeen recipients who are from uThungulu District. People that benefitted from the donation were from uMlalazi, Nkandla & uMhlatuze subditricts.

Nokwanda Mngoma (10 years) who is attending a local school at Esikhaleni was one of the beneficiar-

ies. Nokwanda is unable to walk and uses her feet when writing. She is described by her educator as a

brilliant child. Her teenage mother (Ningi Mngoma ) was very happy to receive the wheel chair as she

used to carry Nokwanda on her back to and from the school
