Historian Bill Gammage explodes the myth that pre-European settlement Australia was an untamed wilderness, revealing the complex, country-wide systems of land management used by Aboriginal people.

Inspired by early European accounts that some of the Australian environment resembled well-groomed English estates, Bill has written the book The Biggest Estate on Earth, exploring the ways Aboriginal people lived with the landscape to ensure a rich and fertile environment.

Join Kate Evans (ABC Radio National) in conversation with Bill Gammage as they discuss how Aboriginal people understood and shaped this historical landscape, and the impacts of this knowledge on current land management strategies.

Nineteenth century pastoral life on the Darling Downs comes alive in this intimate exhibition of treasures at SLQ. Explore the prized possessions, photo albums, planting journals, and other records of farm life of the Europeans who settled in the Darling Downs from 1839.

Popularly known as the grass dukes and shepherd kings, they lived up to their image as antipodean aristocrats, erecting fi ne homesteads, grand stables and woolsheds and transforming the landscape with exotic plants and formal gardens.

Grass Dukes and Shepherd Kings provides an insight into the lives of the early squatters and their pastoral and political power.

SLQs 2012 John Oxley Library Fellow, architect and historian Don Watson has been working on a successor volume to Queensland architects of the nineteenth century (1994, co-authored with Judith McKay).

Join him as he considers the emergence of specialist consultants structural, electrical and mechanical engineers and quantity surveyors who assumed roles formerly undertaken by architects or building contractors. Discover the early history of these disciplines in Queensland and where Don thinks the line should be drawn on the list of whos who from the era of 19001950.

The fellowship includes a work space within the John Oxley Library to explore the information-rich resources, access library staff expertise and advice, and immerse yourself in research leading to new knowledge about Queenslands history.
