Emergency workers tried torevive the 43-year-old man,who was not identified byname, after pulling him fromthe Hudson River, according tonews reports. He was thentransferred to a New Jersey hos-pital.

The exact cause of deathwas unknown, pending an au-topsy.

Ironman triathlons are gru-eling events in which competi-tors swim 2.4 miles, bike 112miles and run 26.2 miles.

But even non-Ironmantriathlons, such as an annual

32-mile race in New York City, occasionally experience fatali-ties.

Last year, for example, the

New York City Triathlon left a64-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman dead.

A 32-year-old man likewisedied at the 2008 New York CityTriathlon.

Nationwide, a recent studyfound 14 deaths among the959,214 people who competedin U.S.A. Triathlon-sanctionedevents from January 2006 to

September 2008. All but one of those deaths

occurred during the swimmingsegment.

Triathlon participants havetwice the risk of sudden deathas marathon participants, ac-cording to the study.

2.4The swim portion of atriathlon is 2.4 miles.

Hyaluronic acid (Hyalgan®) is a natural

substance extracted from rooster combs

substances that occur naturally in the

joint, called synovial fluid. In patients

with osteoarthritis, synovial fluid “dries

up”, allowing the cartilage of the joint to

rub against itself and other surfaces. This

causes pain, inflammation, and usually

damage to the joint. Think of this treatment

like oiling a rigid, squeaky door hinge.

Most doctors today do one of three things:1) They perform “blind injections” (an

injection done without imaging guidance).

2) They use antiquated equipment from as

far back as 2001, even in some of the

largest hospitals in New York. 3) They use

Cortisone, which can have side effects.

Canada farmers cash inon United States drought

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday cut its estimate for the U.S. corn crop more than expected, to the smallest corn harvest in six years.

After spring floods drownedhis seeding plans two yearsstraight, Canadian farmerWalter Finlay is harvestingwhat looks to be an average orslightly better crop of wheatand canola.

Average will do just finethis year.

The worst drought in a halfcentury in the U.S. Midwesthas scorched corn and soy-bean crops, igniting grain andoilseed prices and leavingfarmers in Western Canadapoised to profit nicely off themisery of U.S. growers.

Canada is the world’s sev-enth-largest wheat-growingcountry, and the top exporterof spring wheat and durum, used in baking and pasta-mak-ing respectively. It’s thebiggest producer and shipperof canola, used to make oil forsalad dressings and margarine.

Canadian farmers will har-vest a record-smashing 16 mil-lion tons of canola this year, and the biggest wheat crop inthree years, according to a Julypoll by Reuters of traders andanalysts.

At the Olympic closing cere-mony, the fans were againthere to cheer their athleteson. “Ah, I just love the Dutch,”one of the Games’ volunteerstold me as a Dutch fan gavehim a Dutch mini-flag.“They’re always so friendly.”Then, turning to the fan:“Come on, man, give me akiss.” But the Dutchman was al-ready busy distributing flags toother Olympic staff.

Meanwhile, the internation-

al harmony continued asSwedish fans posed with Irani-ans, while a group of youngFrenchmen made new friendsfrom Indonesia and Spaniardskissed Jamaicans. In fact, theLondon Games have proven —as the Olympics always should— that national pride doesn’thave to be aggressive.

“The visitors have been verynice and calm,” a securityguard told me, referring to the80,000 people who werestreaming in for the ClosingCeremony.

Nowhere is that Olympicnational pride more obviousthan here in the host country.Yes, Britain finished third in

gold medals, its best result in acentury, but following theBritish media coverage onecould easily get the impressionthat no other country has wonany medals. Indeed, theOlympics have done Britain alot of good, not just in financialterms. People are suddenlyproud to be British, as opposedto English, Welch, NorthernIrish or Scottish. Scotland’splanned independence is nowuncertain.

As fans continued theircross-border love-in inside theOlympic Park, a large group ofIslamists were holding aprotest just outside the gates.“UN go to hell! Assad go to hell!Burma go to hell! Hands offMuslims! Allah Akhbar!” theyshouted in an increasingly hos-tile manner. A young Africanstrolled over and tried to calmthe Islamists down: “Jesussaves, man.” But, I submit, in-side the Olympic stadium quitea few people would say, “UsainBolt saves, man.”

Shut it down

The British brought out thebig guns of music to throw areal closing party.

A video of John Lennonperforming “Imagine” gotattention, while the music ofQueen, Pink Floyd, The Whoand The Kinks all appeared.

It was fitting to have theoriginators of Girl Power— the Spice Girls —close out an Olympics

that was the most dominantfor women in history.

Not only did every coun-try send at least one femalerepresentative for the firsttime, the U.S. team was dom-inated by performancesfrom the ladies.

They won 29 of the 46gold medals the UnitedStates won and 58 of the 104total. It was the first timewomen had out-medaledtheir male counterparts —and it wasn’t even close.

From Allyson Felixwinning three golds on thetrack to Missy Franklin tak-ing home four in the pool, the U.S. women dominated. And don’t forget about teamsports, where the basketball, water polo and soccer teamsall won gold. METRO

11NYC’s #1 FREE DAILY MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2012news

New YorkYes, the congestion in NYCwould be horrific and no majorU.S. city is currently in the posi-tion to budget $3 billion fortwo weeks of fun, but NewYork is the type of “world-classcity” that the IOC drools over.

Its West Coast rival LosAngeles has, in Olympics-terms, likely hosted the Gamestoo recently (1984) to beconsidered a possibility. TheUnited States OlympicCommittee nominated NYC for2012, but the bid was eliminat-ed on the second ballot.Olympic chances: 7

ChicagoIts bid for the 2016 Gamescame up short, but by the timethe bidding for the 2024 gamescomes around (2015), Chicagoshould be one of the global fa-vorites.

“The Chi” in the summer-time is phenomenal and in its2016 bid all of the athletic fa-cilities would have been inclose proximity. The reasonthis wouldn’t be a lock is thebudget. Chicago was looking ata $3.8 billion budget for the2016 games and many in theWindy City wanted to pass.Olympic chances: 9

World will head to Rio for 2016 GamesThe London Olympics may beonly one day in the books, butthe best cure for an Olympichangover is to look ahead.

It was announced on Oct. 2,2009, that the 2016 SummerOlympics will be held in Riode Janeiro, Brazil — the firstGames ever held in SouthAmerica.

And with the handing overof the Olympic flame fromLondon to Rio, the march to2016 has already begun.

Rio is also hosting the

World Cup in 2014, so manyof the same venues will beused. That includes MaracanãStadium, where the openingand closing ceremonies willbe performed, as well as the fi-nals of the soccer tourna-ments — sure to be among themost raucous ever held.

When Rio submitted its bidto the IOC, it was planned tocost $14.4 billion. But that wasjust an estimate and it couldcertainly cost more than that.IOC Chief Jacques Rogge said

before the London closing cer-emonies he wanted a finalbudget as soon as possible.

Two new sports will debutin Rio, including golf and rug-by. Tiger Woods was amongthe golfers who lobbied forthe sports’ inclusion and willlikely play as well.

The Games have come along way since just nine sportsin 1896.

Winter Games?

If you fell asleep in geogra-phy class, the 2016 Games inRio will actually be held dur-ing the winter, since it is inthe southern hemisphere.

Don’t worry about bringing acoat though. Temperaturesin winter in Rio are generallyabout 78 degrees Fahrenheit. You can bring your swimsuit.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes

Which US city should host next?

BostonIf Atlanta could host anOlympics, why couldn’tBoston?

The obvious issue, howev-er, would be the ability tobuild an Olympic-sized stadi-um in the city. The last time aGillette Stadium-sized projectwas proposed for Boston, itwas met with endlessbarriers. There’s a reason whythe Patriots still play 25 milessouth of the city. And it tookthe threat of a move toConnecticut just to get thatstadium built.Olympic chances: 4

PhiladelphiaIn the middle of theNortheast Corridor, Phillywould have no trouble attract-ing a large, Olympic-sizedcrowd. But is the city reallyequipped to handle thatmuch traffic?

One plus is that there arethree relatively new athleticstadiums all within walkingdistance of one another. TheWells Fargo Center could hostindoor events like basketballand volleyball, while LincolnFinancial Field would have tobe altered for track and field.Olympic chances: 4

While the finan-cial rewards ofLondon hostingthe 2012 sum-

mer games will be highlydebated over the next sev-eral days, cities across theglobe won’t hesitate to putin a bid for the world’sbiggest athletic celebrationgoing forward.

With the 1996 SummerGames having been held inAtlanta and the 2002Winter Games havingbeen held in Salt Lake City,it is a near guarantee that aU.S. city will host anotherOlympics within the next20 years.

Metro takes a look atwhere those games couldbe held in the U.S., and thelikelihood that a bid wouldbe accepted by theInternational OlympicCommittee. MATT BURKE

Who’s back?

We know the 2016 Gameswill be held in Rio, butwhich athletes will be thereto compete? Four years is avery long time in sports, butlet’s take a look at some ofthe stars from the LondonGames and see if they couldfigure into Rio:

Usain Bolt(Age: 25)Bolt has al-ready said hehopes to bein Rio as longas he ishealthy. We hope he is too.Carl Lewis went to threestraight Olympics as a sprint-er, but was only on the4x100-meter relay team. Boltmay be more driven byYohan Blake, though.

Gabby Douglas (Age: 16)The good news for fans ofthe American and individualall-around champion is thatshe is only 16. But the U.S.women’s gymnastics teamhas been entirely new ineach of the last threeOlympics. It’s unlikely she, orany of the “Fab Five,” will bein Rio.

MissyFranklin (Age: 17)Franklin is theanointed heirto the U.S.swimmingcrown, so huge things will beexpected of her in Rio. Shewon four golds in Londonand could swim a MichaelPhelps-esque program ofeight races in 2016.

David Boudia (Age: 23) Like gymnastics, diving is of-ten a young person’s game.In fact, Boudia was the oldestmember of the men’s divingteam in London. But Boudiawas a late bloomer in thesport and his gold in Londonwill likely mean he at leastgives Rio a go.

Alex Morgan(Age: 23) AbbyWambach isalmost cer-tainly doneon the U.S.women’s soccer team. Sowho is going to lead them?Well, Morgan is the naturalbet. She may already be themost recognizable player. The pressure to beat Martaand Brazil in Rio will be ab-solutely tremendous for theUnited States.

Scenes fromtwo weeks inLondon 2012

1After winning gold inBeijing, Kristin Armstrong

retired from cycling to have ababy. Well, she decided tocome out of retirement forLondon and stood on thepodium with her 3-year-oldson as gold medalist in thewomen’s time trial.

2If you saw Missy Franklin inLondon, chances are you

saw her smiling. The bubbly17-year-old from Coloradowith the size 13 feet won fourgolds — the most of anyfemale athlete at the Games —in swimming.

3One of the biggest upsetscame in the men’s 100-

meter freestyle as AmericanNathan Adrian upset AussieJames Magnussen for the gold.He also won quite a fewfemale fans.

4Any thought that theseOlympics wouldn’t still

belong to Michael Phelpsdisappeared after a fourthplace finish in the 400-meterindividual medley. In hisnext six races he won twosilvers and four more goldsas he set the record for mostmedals in Olympic history.

5Finishing second is no fun.Just ask Sanya Richards-

Ross, who cracked down thefinal straightaway of the 400meters in Beijing and lost herchance at gold. No such painin London, as Richards-Rosstook gold in the 400m and the4x400m relay.

6Storybook endings are rarein sports. Phelps got his in

London, but so did the duo ofKerri Walsh Jennings and MistyMay-Treanor. The best pair inbeach volleyball history wontheir third straight gold inLondon.

7For the most part theweather was surprisingly

good — and very unlike rainyLondon. Just don’t tell that togold medalist Marianne Vosand the ladies of the women’sroad race.

8Remember when peopletalked about Usain Bolt

being vulnerable coming intoLondon? Not so much. Heleaves as the unquestionedgreatest sprinter of all-time.

9Nothing sums up theagony of defeat more than

American runner MorganUceny, who tripped and fell onthe final lap of the women’s1,500 meters. It was deja vu forUceny, who also fell on the lastlap at the 2011 WorldChampionships.

10Revenge never tasted assweet as it did for the

U.S. women’s soccer team. AlexMorgan’s goal in the 123rd

minute of the semifinalagainst Canada set up the

U.S. win over Japan, whobeat them in the 2011World Cup final.

11You wouldn’t haveknown it in the U.S., but

the biggest star going into thegame for Britain was JessicaEnnis. The 26-year-old fromSheffield was plastered allover billboards in London. She didn’t disappoint, winning the heptathlon infront of a raucus Olympicstadium.

12As if you needed anillustration, it hurts to

drop 423 pounds on your neck.Germany’s Matthias Steinerfound that out the hard way.He was, thankfully, miraculously unharmed.

13There is rarely a betterlock for gold than a

Chinese diver. They won sevenof eight golds in China and sixof eight in London. But thanksto American David Boudia, they didn’t win the marqueeevent — the men’s 10-meterplatform. Boudia sunk worldchamp Qiu Bo to take gold.

14Even Usain Bolt wasimitating Mo Farah by

the time the British nativewon double gold in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. He and Ennis were clearly thehome favorites to come out ofLondon.

15Nope, she isn’t evenslightly impressed

with that silver medal.McKayla Maroney isprobably still the bestvaulter in the world — butafter landing on her buttwith a gold medal all butassured, it’s not surprisingthe world got that look.

16No such snear fromindividual all-around

champion Gabby Douglas. She was all smiles aftercapturing America’s thirdstraight gold in the all-around — and a whole lotof fans back in the states.

College organization redoubles effortsto remove Chik-fil-A from campuses

GETTY IMAGES

“What Dan Cathy said, actually, I think he has every right to say,” says Windmeyer.“It makes it easier for people to choose between his company and others.”

Recent anti-gay comments by Chick-fil-A presidentDan Cathy have spurred LGBT students into action In just a few short weeks, theChick-fil-A culture wars maygravitate toward college cam-puses as students across thecountry return to class.

Campus Pride — the largestorganization of LGBT collegestudents nationwide — saysthat it intends to use Chick-fil-Apresident Dan Cathy’s recentcomments as leverage in itsdecade-long effort to removethe fast-food chain from collegecampuses.

“A lot of things have hap-pened recently to educate col-lege students about this compa-ny’s activities. When they getback on campus, there’s goingto be even more direct actiontaking place,” says Shane Wind-meyer, the executive director ofCampus Pride. “We want to let

students know that every timethey buy Chick-fil-A, they’resupporting a company thatfunds hate groups.”

Campus Pride has long op-posed Chick-fil-A because ofWinShape, a nonprofit found-ed by the Cathy family in 1984.Over the years, WinShape hasgiven money to various anti-gaygroups, including the FamilyResearch Council — which, asWindmeyer points out, is desig-nated as a hate group by theSouthern Poverty Law Center.

Campus Pride also intendsto challenge food services con-tractors that offer Chick-fil-A oncampuses. And the group willlikely gain some traction there:Two of the three majorproviders — Aramark andSodexo — are considered LGBT-

friendly corporations by theHuman Rights Campaign, andboth seem to value that status.

“What Dan Cathy said, actu-ally, I think he has every rightto say. I think he has every rightto own a business. In fact, I’mso glad he has finally come outas anti-gay. It makes it easier forpeople to choose between hiscompany and others,” saysWindmeyer. “But consumers al-so have the right to know whatgroups his company funds. It’skind of funny that the samecompany that sells chickenwith cows also claims to beChristian, yet funds hategroups. So I think they are veryconfused.”

that 60 percent of graduateswho had paid internships re-ceived at least one job offer. When employers pay you, theyare investing more in you —therefore, the probability theyhire you full-time is higher. Here are three ways to find apaid internship:

1Look in the winter andspring. Most students hearfrom career advisors and

parents that summer is the besttime to find internships. Basedon research from Indeed.com, atop job search aggregator, thebest time to find paid intern-ships is actually winter andspring. The amount of paid in-ternship postings increases 26percent higher on average dur-ing those seasons. If you lookwhen others don’t, it’s also eas-ier to stand out.

2Use all of your resources. The best way to learnabout paid internships is

to ask around. Talk to your fam-ily and friends, and connect

with your LinkedIn contacts.Go to conferences and localevents, ask your teachers, at-tend job fairs and even look onCraigslist. When you approacha possible opportunity, ask upfront if it’s paid before you goon a series of interviews. If it’sunpaid and you have no otheroptions, try to at least getcourse credit for your hardwork.

3Alter expectations accord-ing to your interests. De-pending on your major

If you’re an account-ing or finance major, there’s ahigh likelihood that you willget paid as an intern. As a fan of the “Bourne” series,British actress Rachel Weiszsays she needed little convinc-ing to sign on for “The BourneLegacy,” which sees JeremyRenner take over for MattDamon as a special agent goingup against the secret govern-ment program that trainedhim. But one thing Weiszdidn’t count on was theamount of running that wouldbe involved.

Your character, a governmentscientist who becomes anaccomplice of Jeremy Renner’scharacter, may have a more in-teresting character arc than his. She’s got a great arc, yeah. [Shestarts] as someone who’s kindof morally blinkered aboutwhat she’s doing and is told notto ask questions — which suitsher just fine, because if shestarted thinking about whatshe was doing I think shewould know that she’s verymorally compromised. So to gofrom this morally comprised, really f—ed up scientist livingin this big house without aman, and then, as [directorTony Gilroy] says, to see her be-come a warrior — she decides

that she wants to live, and sherises to the occasion, which iscool. When you first read the script, did you realize exactly howmuch running was involved? No. I kind of skimmed throughthe action pages and was read-ing the character stuff and sto-ry stuff. Because actually actionsequences don’t read that inter-esting on the page, and a lot of

that was kind of choreo-graphed later. No, I didn’t real-ize that would be that muchrunning. It’s a lot of running, alot. I’ve never done anythingthat’s this realistic. Somethinglike “The Mummy,” for in-stance, is a completely differenttone and genre. It’s like aspoofy, B-movie, funny, horrorsend-up kind of thing. So thisrequired something completelydifferent.Working in film can be a greatway to see the world, it seems.Definitely. I mean, it’s very dif-ferent being somewhere andworking there than beingsomewhere as a tourist and justbeing on holiday, becauseyou’re hopefully relaxed whenyou’re on holiday. But yeah, I’veseen a lot more of the world.Manila was a fascinating city. Are there any locations you’vefilmed that you’ve then goneback to for holiday?Um ... hmm. No. I was trying tothink if there was, but no. I’vebeen to Kenya — and thenQueens for this for a bit.

Q&A

Did you enjoy the stunt work?

I did, yeah. I mean, some wereterrifying. We really did al-most all our own stunts, andthere was no green screen, soit was real. We were shootingin real locations, so they’reshutting down the freeways ofManila, and it’s me on theback [of a motorcycle] holdingon to Jeremy and there’s 200stunt cars driving. There’s justso many elements, so manythings that could go wrong. Itwasn’t just my ability to holdon. I wasn’t acting in thosescenes, I was just terrified.

Dramatist Kenneth Lin givesRasche plenty to work with:Nathan is a politico helpingstate assemblyman Julius (LouisOzawa Changchien) angle for acongressional run. But the play has one fairlysignificant shortcoming: itslack of activity. “Kitchen Nightmares” hostGordon Ramsay’s new renova-tion reality show will makeyou think twice about stayingat a hotel ever again.

In “Hotel Hell,” the celebritychef steps out of the kitchenand into the country’s bed-and-breakfasts and resorts in des-perate need of overhaul. Theproblems range from an un-willingness to change businessstrategies during a slow econo-my to — gross-out alert — find-ing a duvet cover that hadn’tbeen cleaned for 18 months.

“It’s so obvious what’swrong,” Ramsay says of the ho-tels he visits in the new Fox se-ries. “I don’t think commonsense becomes that common inthose scenarios. That’s the frus-trating part.”

Worst of

Ramsay has important advicefor couples looking for aromantic getaway.

“If you get there and theysuggest they’re going to up-grade you to the honeymoonsuite: Don’t take it,” Ramsaysays. “I’m trying to be serious, because it is somewhat ... notjust shocking — personally, Ididn’t think it could shoot thatfar,” he adds, deliberately re-maining vague before offer-ing a PG explanation: “Um,I’m talking about if you shakea can of Coke and open it.”

Ramsay swears he didn’ttravel to these hotels “to createhavoc” — though he uses histrademark bluntness to pointout flaws, which rubs some ho-tel owners the wrong way. “Iwent in there to position it in away that they have to be re-sponsible,” Ramsay insists.

And some standards, itseems, have dropped appalling-ly low.

“The shock for me … wasthe general hygiene,” Ramsaysays. “If you had a dentist ap-pointment tomorrow morningand you were going for a fillingor a polish, you would see thatunique space spotless. I thinkkitchens and hotel rooms andbathrooms should be exactlythe same. The biggest worryacross the whole series was thestates of the pillowcases. Re-move the pillowcases, flash theblack light in there for 30 sec-onds, and I was horrified. Imean literally horrified — andI’m talking about some very ex-pensive hotels.”

On the series, Ramsay’s in-tervention may be the hotels’last chance to stay in business. But in a broader context, he

An oft-featured speaker atRepublican Party leadershipevents, Sjodin’s latest book —“Small Message, Big Impact:The Elevator Speech Effect” —is an attempt to apply herstrategies to everyday officesituations.

How do you stay true to yourself and still craft an effective pitch? When I do workshops, I video-tape people telling a personal

adventure story. While they’resharing it, they’re animated, and they use their own littlecolloquialisms. Basically, they’re having fun. Their natu-ral voice comes through. ThenI take that same person andvideo them giving a businesspresentation. They suddenlybecome like Stepford [wives].There’s this fictitious businessmode that people think theyneed to adopt. Now, I’m notsaying you shouldn’t behaveappropriately in a meeting, but starting to blend in yournatural passion would be agood first step.Where do people go wrong in

crafting an elevator speech? They don’t take the time tocraft it. They wing it. It takestime and effort to honestly askyourself: What do I want tosay? What’s important aboutwhat I want to say? And, moreimportantly, what does the lis-

tener think is important? What’s the sexy nugget aboutwhat I have to say?But the listener often throwswild cards at you. That’s why, before every busi-ness meeting, it’s also impor-tant to ask yourself a basicquestion: What do I want tohappen as a result of thismeeting? Once you knowwhat you want — in plain andclear language — it becomeseasy to work out what theyneed to hear in order to giveyou that.

Since I was laid off two monthsago, I haven’t been sleeping well.I’m much more irritable andhaven’t been very motivated to dosome of the things that I usuallyenjoy, like playing tennis. My girl-friend thinks I’m depressed, butI’m not suicidal or anything likethat. What do you think?

I’m sorry to hear about yourjob. Times are tough. Jobloss is considered one ofthe top 10 stressors a per-

son can experience in thecourse of a lifetime. Obviously, unemployment can affect yourmood, your self-esteem andyour sleep. And a lack of sleepcan affect your mood, your self-esteem and your energy level.Sometimes it’s hard to tellwhat comes first.

So are you depressed? Possi-bly, but it’s hard to determinewithout more information. Onthe surface, you seem to displayat least two of the five symp-toms needed to diagnose de-pression. Your insomnia andloss of interest in activities thatyou previously found pleasura-

ble are two signature signs. Butin order to make a definitive di-agnosis, according to the Diag-nostic and Statistical Manual ofMental Disorders, at least threemore symptoms would need tobe present for most of the timeduring a two-week period:

Feeling sad and emptySignificant increase or

decrease in appetiteFatigue or loss of energy

nearly every dayFeelings of worthlessness

and hopeless about the futureDiminished ability to

concentrate/indecisivenessRecurrent suicidal thoughtsFeeling unusually sluggish or

slowed down

Rather than take myword, my advice is toconsult a mental healthprofessional who can

do a full and proper assess-ment. Depression, consideredthe common cold of mental ill-ness, is nothing to be ashamedof — but it is something to takeseriously, especially if it per-sists. Fortunately, treatments

like cognitive behavioral thera-py and anti-depressants canhelp alleviate symptoms.

In the meantime, I suggestcreating a routine that involvesa set schedule and work areafor your job search. Considerconsulting a career counselorand join networking groups. You might also try to improveyour sleep by: 1. Winding downearly the same time everynight; 2. Refraining from caf-feine after 1 p.m.; and 3. Limit-ing stimulation like televisionand the Internet before bed.

End violencethrough knowledgeAfter reading the letter titled“Coverage of Sikh templekillings found wanting” by Ja-hed Ahmed, I find it isprofoundly true that this un-fortunate, horrible incidentwas not given the media cov-erage it deserved. I agreedwith Mr. Ahmed that this wasNOT an act of mistaken iden-tity but indeed premeditated. The people of this countryneed to educate themselveson the other religions and un-derstand their beliefs. It is areal shame that immigrantsare not yet accepted in thiscountry and a bigger shamethat those that kill and hurtthese innocent, God-lovingpeople will never understandthat most of them came tothis country to better them-selves. Wake up America, thiscountry was built by

immigrants — and regardlesshow you want to take it, theyare here to stay. You can kill, but you cannot kill the lovethese people have for human-ity. It only strengthens it.AMY ALI, VIA E-MAIL

What does it matterabout tax returns?I could not care less whetherMitt Romney produces his taxreturns. I am not voting forhim or Obama. The lesser oftwo evils is not the correctchoice. People should votetheir conscience. That beingsaid, why should Romneyhave to produce his taxreturns? Why does anyonehave the right to know whathe does with his money? Youwouldn’t want peopledemanding for you toproduce your tax returns, so

why should you demand itfrom him? To all you peopleclamoring about Romney’stax returns, you’re starting tosound a lot like DonaldTrump and the “birthers.”This is a dead issue meant todistract the public yet againfrom the real issues.KELLY DONNOE, LYNBROOK

Congress shouldtake more mentalhealth daysCongress adjourning andleaving Washington for a five-week recess is actually greatnews. Our civil and economicliberties are continually atrisk when any legislativebody is in session. Elected offi-cials on a bipartisan basis rou-tinely pass legislation toincrease spending, taxes, bor-rowing and deficits. They also

pass bills benefiting their“Pay for Play” contributors, funding pork barrel memberitems along with new rulesand regulations infringing onour day-to-day lives. WhenCongress is not working, theycan’t cause mischief and grieffor the rest of us. I wish theywould stay home even longer!LARRY PENNER, GREAT NECK, N.Y.

US road paved with bad choicesSure, President Obama inher-ited all sorts of problemsfrom George W. Bush, that di-abolical nightmare. But thatdoesn’t let Obama off thehook. He has perpetuatedthese useless wars, practicallyruined our economy withthose bailouts, gun-runningin Mexico to their drug lords, and worse. That’s not to saywe’ll be any better off withRomney in the White House. But we still have choices oth-er than Tweedle-Dee andTweedle-Dum. Unfortunately, the American people will like-ly vote that way.FRANK ST. GEORGE, VIA E-MAIL

1The offensive line isstill downright offensive

The much-maligned offensiveline of last year looked no bet-ter this go around, with theJets giving up five sacks for 40yards.

There was confusion in allparts of the line, with D’Brick-ashaw Ferguson struggling andright tackle Wayne Hunter not

looking much better than hisoverall poor showing last

year. There is also seriousneed for a blocking tightend on this team, some-thing the Jets don’t haveon their roster.

“The offensive linetakes all the blame, of

course, when your quarter-back gets hit. On some ofthose, the ball has to comeout,” head coach Rex Ryansaid. “Now there were alsoa couple where maybe itcould have been guys get-ting beat physically.”

2Coples looks like hewas worth the pick

In his first taste of the NFL,the Jets’ top draft pick playedall four quarters and showedflashes of why he was the No.16 pick in the NFL Draft.

Quinton Coples, a rookieout of North Carolina, was

disruptive offthe edge andconsistentlyappliedpressure. Ryancalled Coples“tremendous”with five tack-

les, including a sack and atackle for a loss.

“I did very well. Idon’t have a gradefor it, but I wasvery productive. Ialso have a lot to im-prove upon as well,”Coples said. “I look forward tolooking at this game on filmand correcting my mistakes.”

3Tim Tebow still exists, but he’s still the backup

Yes, the most hyped debut of abackup quarterback — or per-haps any quarterback — infranchise history was the sec-ond quarter insertion of TimTebow into the game.

True, Tebow made two spe-cial teams ap-pearances be-fore that, butwhen heentered thegame undercenter, all eyeswere on him.

The Jets didn’t use any trickplays or any of their Wildcat

offense, but Tebow stillmade plays with his feet, leading the Jets in rush-ing with four carries for

34 yards. He was also 4-for-8 for 27 yards passing the ball, including an interception. Hewas perhaps better thanexpected. KRISTIAN DYER

Jays bombHughes toavoid sweepThe Yankees’ hot streakslowed thanks to an aw-ful performance fromPhil Hughes in Toronto.

Hughes lasted justfour innings and allowedseven earned runs as theylost 10-7. Rajai Davis ledthe charge for the BlueJays with five RBIs. EdwinEncarnacion also hit his30th home run of the sea-son. J.A. Happ got the windespite allowing fourruns of his own.

The Yankees had wonfour games in a row tostop the momentaryquestions of a Baltimorecomeback.

GETTY IMAGESGiants get mixed bagThe Giants lost their preseasonopener to the Jaguars, 32-21,but that’s beside the point. Dur-ing the exhibition season, winsand losses aren’t as importantas execution and stayinghealthy. Thankfully for banged-up Big Blue, the latter wasmaintained. But unfortunatelyfor the defending worldchamps, the former was se-verely lacking.

Head coach Tom Coughlinwas dismayed at how they lost,as the Giants squandered leadsof 17 points in the second quar-ter and 10 points in the fourth— largely due to muffing twopunt returns.

“It was very disappointing tocome here and be up 24-7 andlose the game,” Coughlin said.“We have a lot to learn fromthis and a lot to improve upon.”

Coughlin added it was al-most a blessing to have seenthe warts this early so theyhave time to correct things.

“We are under no illusions

as to the amount of improve-ment we need,” Coughlin said.“But we got enough goodthings on tape to use as teach-ing and coaching aides. We can

correct things and that is reallywhat these games are allabout.”

The good news is the firstunit looked significantly

stronger than the next fewgroups to get in the game astime wore on.

“I have [looked at the gamefilm], and I thought that thefirst unit was pretty good,”quarterback Eli Manning saidyesterday in the team’s first dayback at practice after Friday’sgame. “Obviously, there aresome things that we can cleanup, but we were very close tobeing very good. I thought theguys were sharp and runningaround well and close to scor-ing on all three possessionsthat we had. I think, overall, itwould be something to learnfrom.

“I can’t recall every first pre-season game [in my career], butI thought overall that the firstunit was good. From our firstdrive, we went down there andat least got a few first downsand moved the ball.”

US withstands gameSpain team to win goldSpain didn’t make it easy onthe preordained Olympicchampions, but the UnitedStates pulled away late to taketheir second straight goldmedal.

The game was tied 80-80with 2:19 left in the thirdquarter and was just a one-point game heading into thefourth, but LeBron James wastoo much down the stretch. The U.S. won, 107-100.

“A lot of teams have wongold easy. We didn’t want itthat way,” James said. “We’re acompetitive team, and we lovewhen it gets tight. That’swhen our will and determina-tion kind of shows. It was thesame way in ’08.”

James scored 19 points inthe game, including seven inthe fourth quarter. Kevin Du-rant led Team USA with 30points on 8-of-18 shooting andhad nine rebounds.

The early story was theshooting of Spain’s Juan Car-los Navarro. The veteran hitthree 3-pointers in the firstthree-plus minutes of thegame. But it was the perform-ance of Pau Gasol in the thirdquarter that kept Spain alive. With his brother Marc on thebench with four fouls, Gasolhad the team’s first 13 pointsof the second half.
