PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Summary of Last Meeting Opening Sergeant Greg Rieper brought the meeting to order. After Rotary Grace and the loyal toast, Michael Griscti proposed the International Toast to the Rotary Club of London. Sergeant Greg then handed the meeting to President Bobby Redman. President Bobby Redman President Bobby welcomed our guest speakers, Claire Thompson and Mark Wallace and also welcomed Lyn Stapley and Margaret van Emmerik. Apologies had been received from Alan Jones, Bob Low, Bruce Pike, Suresh Prasad, Haran Ramachandran, Gordon Scoble, Jim Sifonios , Rod Tilden. Women in Service Dinner President Bobby called on PP Penny Hill to report on the Women in Service Dinner organized by the Soroptimist Club which she and Penny had attended.

Hello Everyone, Last Monday night we were treated to an excellent presentation by Claire Thompson and Mark Wallace, who provided great insight into the GSE Team vis it to England, back in April . It was interest ing to hear about all the fantastic vocational visi ts that the Team were offered, together with great feedback on the warmth and kindness of the Rotary families who hosted the Team during the ir tr ip. It sounds as if the organisation in the UK was excellent, with the trip providing the Team with a truly memorable experience . It is encouraging to recognise our Club’s role in assisting to make this possible for Claire, through our sponsorship. Claire has made i t very clear that she hopes to maintain a long term relationship with the Club Members of The Hills Kellyville, and that she will provide ongoing support to the Club through her media links . Next Monday we have the opportunity to learn more about social networking from Haran, who has become quite an expert in the area. Haran, as many of you are aware is now involved in producing the District newsletter, which in turn is providing us with some excellent information in our own Weekly Bulletin. It will be an interesting eveni ng with a focus on how we can public ise information about our Club on the Internet. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Warm regards, President Bobby Redman


Penny reported that it had been a good function with nearly 40 attending from a range of service organisations. Trivia Night Winston Hills Rotary This will be held on 11th August and President Members to consider attending as Winston Hills had supported our trivia night. A list was circulated. Treasurer Keith Stapley Keith reminded members that membership fees were now overdue. Open Garden – The Garden of Secrets 8th & 9th September Members of the project team had inspected the garden on the 29th July at the invitation of the owners Paul and Jennifer Leone and were totally impressed by this spectacular garden as well as the enthusiasm and support of the owners. The project team had already had one meeting at which tasks had been allocated and would hold weekly meetings from now on. This would be one of the biggest projects the Club has run and would need the ful l support of all members, partners and friends to be successful. One crit ical task was deciding which charity to nominate as the major beneficiary as this would feature prominently in our promotion. A video of the last Open garden event at this venue which was for the Guide Dogs in 2008 was shown during the meal. Community Service – Graeme Rohan Bunning’s BBQ 11th August Graeme circulated a list for rostering for this event. At least 4 people would be required for each 3 hour shift. Dan Murphy Our trial arrangements with the Kellyvil le Scouts would start next Saturday. Writing Competition Awards 11th August A list was circulated for nominating attendance for this event International Robert Mackey Christmas puddings Robert spoke on the Rotary Christmas puddings which would be ordered the puddings were $16.50 for an 800gm pudding and were of high quality. He then circulated a flyer and a list for orders. Jackpot Raffle The Sergeant then ran our initial jackpot raffle. President Bobby had the winning ticket but was unable to draw out the Joker from the pack of cards.


Guest Speakers

Claire Thompson and Mark Wallace were introduced by President Bobby to speak on their experiences on the GSE team visit to the UK in April . Claire thanked the Club for sponsoring her and said it had been one of the best experiences in her l ife. Mark, who is also editor of Rotary Down Under was the team leader and was most impressed by the quality and performance of the team members. The time in the UK had been very full -on with activities nearly every day and a change of hosts every week. Despite England experiencing the wettest Apri l in 20 years it had been a really exciting time as it was the lead up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and people were just starting to get excited about the Olympic Games. Both Claire and Mark were most impressed by the professional way visits had been organised and the enthusiasm of the host Rotarian GSE Clubs, as well as by the friendliness and hospitality shown to them. There were at least 2 vocational days every week and 4 in some weeks. One of the highlights was a visit to News Limited’s printing plant which is the biggest of its kind in the world. This not only prints News Limited pape rs but also other newspapers under contract. Two other highl ights were being in the main news room at Channel 4 where the presentation style was very different and much less formal than in our TV News and a visit to the House of Commons where they interviewed a local MP and watched

proceedings from the visitors gallery. In Claire’s current role with the Hills Counci l she was also happy to meet the mayors of a number of cities and councils including having a long chat to the Mayor of Stevenage about the differences between Australian and UK local government. They also met the veteran Olympic commentator Stuart Story who entertained them with some of his experiences.

The team gave 12 presentations including one at the District Conference in Torquay which was also one occasion when they had good weather. They changed the presentations weekly to reflect their continuing experiences and this was very well received. All in all both agreed that it had been a very successful and memorable experience. Mark also highl ighted the fact that Rotary now had at least 8 switched on media people from both the incoming and outgoing GSE teams who knew a lot about Rotary and who could be expected to be sympathetic to us. While he felt that they should not feel under pre ssure to join Rotary it was quite possible that at least some may do so, which would be a real bonus.

Weekly Toast - Overseas Club

This week we would like to toast the Rotary Club of Toronto – District 7070. With over 250 members, The Rotary Club of Toronto is one of the largest clubs in Canada and one of the largest Rotary Clubs in the British Commonwealth. It was organized in 1912 (Club No.55) and has acted as Host club for Rotary International Conventions in 1924, 1942, 1964 and 1983.

To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Florida, the state’s first club, the Rotary Club of Jacksonville, and District 6970 raised funds for a mobile health bus that will visit schools, churches, community centers, and shopping areas to provide screenings, inoculations, and basic care to local children and families. Kalyan Banerjee, 2011-12 RI president, and his wife, Binota, were on hand to dedicate the bus in February.

Pilot overview

The Rotary Foundation Future Vision Pilot is a three-year test of

the new grant structure offered in the Foundation's Future Vision Plan. One hundred districts are participating in the pilot. Pilot districts will have a unique opportunity to help refine the new grant structure by providing input and receiving specialized Foundation support and service. Grant structure

Rotary Foundation District Grants

District grants are block grants made to districts for up to 50 percent of their District Designated Fund (DDF). District grants offer the flexibility to respond quickly to immediate needs or to plan projects with clubs locally or in other countries. Rotary Foundation Global Grants

Global grants support large international projects with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in the six areas of focus that correspond to the Foundation's mission. Areas of focus

Vocational Service Month promotes business integrity, professional development

Carlos Früm, governor of District 6440 (Illinois, USA) and a member of the Rotary Club of Northbrook, teaches business principles and entrepreneurship to Maya high school students as part of his district’s ongoing service project in Guatemala. "Vocational service gives Rotarians the opportunity to help others escape poverty and gain a measure of self-respect," Früm says. "As business and professional leaders, we have a duty to lead and encourage good ethics through vocation." Through vocational service, Rotarians contribute their professional expertise and skills to address societal problems and needs, and to promote high ethical standards in the workplace. "Rotary's focus on ethical practices as part of vocational service has been a central part of my success in my business, professional, civic, and personal life since I became a Rotarian," says Paul A. Netzel, vice chair of the Vocational Service Promotion Committee and past RI director. Rotarians have two benchmarks for promoting professional integrity: The Four-Way Test and the Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions. "Rotary's Four-Way Test has served as an easy template for me in weighing the pros and cons of countless issues and decisions I've had to address over my career," Netzel says. "It has helped make me a better Rotarian." Netzel says vocational service sets Rotary apart from other service and humanitarian organizations. Rotarians can support vocational service by
