OUR FOOTY RECORD| GENERATIONS PAST & FUTURE

New football order: The ‘next generation’ of TSL footballers is upon us.

This is the 2nd edition of the CLUB RECORD and there will be a further publication for Round 13. There will also be a Finals Guide and a Grand Final edition.

The CLUB RECORD season guides will be for sale at all games and will provide full player lists, pen pics and information about all Clubs, as well as interesting news about the Tasmania’s premier football competition.

Clubs have taken on the responsibility to produce a home game insert to ensure team lists are up to date so please ask for those when you have purchased your CLUB RECORD.

This edition highlights the ‘next generation’ of young TSL footballers who we expect to see emerge over coming seasons and keep all football fans enthralled as they display their talents and represent their Club and community.

Have a great day at the footy.

The Tasmanian State League home and away season has just ticked over a third of the games played, what does this currently tell us about season 2012?

It tells us that Burnie and Clarence are the two bench mark teams of the competition currently sitting first and second on the ladder respectively with both teams being undefeated to date.

Lauderdale are currently living up to the expectations most people anticipated in 2012 sitting third on the ladder, while Launceston has had to face some adversity in the early part of the season with injuries playing a major factor on them not being able to be at full strength, but have managed to get the job done with five wins in this difficult period.

The big improver of the competition is South Launceston who are currently sitting in fifth position on the ladder. With all due respect to the South Launceston Football Club no one would have expected the Bulldogs to be sitting in fifth position and it is a credit to coach Mitch Thorp and the players on how they have gone about their football. The big question is can this continue?

Glenorchy, North Launceston and North Hobart haven’t had the start they would have liked, but the next month for these three clubs is critically important to keep in touch with the five and further progress their aspirations of playing finals football.

Both Devonport and Hobart are sitting at the bottom end of the ladder, however both teams have played some competitive football and I’m sure that a win for both teams is just around the corner.

The next 5 rounds of football for all teams will be critically important either to consolidate their position in the five on the ladder or for those teams sitting outside of the five to make a charge up the ladder.

What exactly will the next seven weeks bring?

Shaun Young General Manager – State League

VIEW FROm hERE

The next seven weeks of the Wrest Point State League will be crucial for all Clubs and the Torch makes some predictions on what to expect:

Burnie Dockers have surprised no one with their start to 2012 and their big test will come in Round 11 when they travel to Blundstone Arena for a mid-season show down with Clarence. They play 6 games to Round 13 and expect to see them undefeated at that time.

Clarence Roos are also travelling well but will be tested by the Dockers at home and then travel to Lauderdale where the Bombers will be out to prove themselves in the Eastern Shore derby. However, expect the Roos to be entrenched in top 3 by Round 13.

Lauderdale will be looking to consolidate their hold on a finals spot during the middle phase of the year and have challenges against Clarence at home and North Launceston and Glenorchy away to overcome. 9 wins should be possible by Round 13 and a confirmed finals spot.

Launceston have proved highly resilient in their quest for a premiership double. They have 2 stern tests against the Dockers at West Park and against the improving South at their ‘Bermuda Triangle’ venue – Youngtown Oval. The Blues will also be confirmed finals starters by Round 13 however.

South Launceston has to win 3 of their 6 games to stay in the hunt for finals. It’s possible on their current competitive form. An upset against Launceston or Burnie at Youngtown would help their cause. For the Bulldogs 7 wins by Round 13 is a must.

Glenorchy has a tough time in the next 7 weeks with away games to Clarence, Lauderdale and Launceston. Their clash with South Launceston in Round 12 may well prove pivotal to their finals chances in 2012. The Magpies must be sitting on 5 or 6 wins by Round 13 to remain in contention.

North Launceston and North Hobart have a hard road to hoe over the next phase of 2012. Both must win at least 50% of their games to remain in contention over the final 6 rounds. North Launceston could find June a barren month as they face up to Launceston, Clarence, Lauderdale and Burnie in succession. North Hobart will have a season defining clash against South at Youngtown in Round 10 and must beat Devonport and Hobart at home to get back on track.

For Devonport and Hobart their Round 12 clash at the TCA Ground will likely decide who climbs clear of the bottom position on the ladder in 2012. Devonport should prevail, but the Tigers will give their all.

dOCKERS AT A GlANCE

With the season well and truly underway it’s a good time to reflect on what we, as a club, have achieved so far. As a coaching group we are really happy with the way both the seniors and colts have started their respective seasons.

I am pleased with the way our senior players have put 2011 season behind them and have so far taken on the challenge to improve in all areas of our game. We know as a group that there is still have a lot of work in front of us and more improvement is needed if we truly want to challenge for the Premiership.

Players such as Barrett, Fox and B.Mihocek have been very consistent contributors. The inclusion of Templeton and Linnane has added a real spark with their genuine pace and ability to find the footy. Our recruits, Ponsonby, Davies, Knott and McCrossen having settled into our club and adapted well to TSL football. Combine this with the ‘older brigade’ such as Munday, Banham, Laycock and Shackleton adding much needed guidance and experience from week to week.

We wish Zach Mihocek a speedy recovery from his recent knee injury.

Finally I would like to congratulate the 8 players from our club who have been chosen in the State senior squad. This is a great honour and a fantastic achievement for our Club.

Brent Plant

Season 2012 has started very well for the Burnie Dockers both on the field and off.

We have had really good crowds at our home games reflecting the high quality of State League Football, the great spirit our boys are playing with, and the family friendly club environment we have created.

Our trip to Etihad Stadium to play Werribee in the Foxtel Cup was a great experience for players, coaches, support staff and administrators alike. To be a part of such a professionally run operation was a privilege and we have learnt a lot we can use here at home.

Our coterie functions continue to be successful with Cameron Ling and Russell Robertson already appearing at West Park, with others to come including Robert Dipierdomenico and Barry Hall.

We also have a great program planned and will be honouring the greats of the past for reunions for the 1962, 1982 and 1992 premiership teams.

We are pleased to have an available corporate box in The Point, West Park where 10 or so footy fans can watch the game in style including entry tickets, drinks and food at a cost of $550 incl GST. Bookings can be made with myself directly.

We look forward to the coming rounds as we build on the early successes of 2012.

RESUlTS & FIXTURES

This year I have proudly taken on the role of Colts coach as last year’s coach Andrew Hering has stepped up and taken on the role as Senior Assistant coach. I am pleased to have assisting ex Burnie player and senior coach Errol Bourn, who brings with him a wealth of football knowledge and experience. With the season now underway it has been very pleasing to see the improvement in our young Colts so far, it is also pleasing to see our boys step up each week against more seasoned opponents.

We have had to juggle some of our players through our strong U17s competition each week as our lists keeps growing. Under the guidance of Mathew Smart the U17s are showing great promise this year. Mathew has the big challenge of managing his list each week because of the abundance of young talent we have in our area.

Also, our strong list of U14s players, who are coached by Burnie Dockers player Dave McCrae, have been performing well each week with the boys victoriously playing under lights after our round 4 game, followed by the U17s who topped Burnie Football Clubs day off with four victories.

I look forward to the challenges the 2012 season brings and the continuous improvement of our younger players.

CLUB PROFILE | BURNIE dOCKERS

Last week the club launched the 2012 Dockers Cup. At the launch a number of our Senior and Colts players took the teams through their paces. Teams rotated around the ground with different skill activities at each station.

The Dockers Cup is a primary school program within our Zone that consists of 10 schools. The program is designed for participants to first of all have fun and secondly to learn how to play our great game in a safe controlled environment and at the same time represent their school. Every Friday after school the teams go head to head with some fantastic football skills being displayed.

The Dockers Cup is also a fantastic program for our AFL School Ambassadors at these schools. The AFL School Ambassadors coordinate all their school session from training, to games, umpiring to collecting and handing out of all the gear. Without their tireless work and parental support the Dockers Cup wouldn’t be as strong as it is today.

Under our partnership arrangement with the Fremantle Dockers every school has been kitted out with different colour Dockers jumpers. The support that we have received from the Fremantle football club, not only for the Dockers Cup, but for all of our club activities has been fantastic.

Over the years we have found that the Dockers Cup provides a good clear pathway for all participants to come through. From Dockers Cup through to our junior teams and eventually one day hopefully pulling on a senior jumper. Doesn’t seem that long ago Eli Templeton, Brady Grey and James Dowling were all learning their trade in the Dockers Cup and now they play a big part in our Senior and Colts teams.

The 2012 season has had a promising start, with a number of good results. The side has shown that a big preseason and a continual high level of training standards, will lead to on field success.

After a poor first quarter in round 1, the side has played some quality football and continues to show improvement. We have been tested at times but to the team’s credit, they have fought back as evidenced with the win over Lauderdale in the first of a three game series for the inaugural Eastern Shore Cup.

With a large number of recruits this year, I believe we have a lot of development and improvement left.

Jake Cox has had a stunning start after crossing from traditional rival Glenorchy. Brady Jones leads the way with his endeavour and work ethic, and slotted into the midfield seamlessly. Chris Hensby continues to go about his business and adds grunt to the engine room.

Brennan Savage leads a tight defence with Jason Bailey, Rohan Swan and Tim Castle all playing well. Mitch Williamson is a strong focal point up forward being well supported by Jack Boon, Aaron French and Trent Standen. Ryan Bailey and Lewis Taylor have done well in the ruck and continue to show improvement.

I look forward to seeing you throughout the remainder of the season.

Matthew Drury

The club has started the season well, but in the words of the coach “we still have much more work to do”.

To all our sponsors thank you for the confidence that you show in our Club.

During our busy schedule it is always important to reflect on when the Club began its journey. In 1947 the Club was admitted into ‘The Football League’ so this year is our 65th year of top level competition.

At an educated guess around 1200 young men/and women have proudly represented the Club at senior level with many more thousands in the many other teams the Club has put on the field during this time.

Those of us that now support the Club have an important legacy to protect and develop so our children’s children can still proudly represent what is the most prominent sporting brand on the Eastern Shore and in Tasmanian Football.

For each sporting Club no matter the size to survive and be successful requires many volunteers who are the “glue which holds them together” Our volunteers are certainly that glue and those who now have the privilege of wearing the red and white colours need to pause occasionally and be thankful for without them we would not function.

While it would be unfair to name individuals I want through this column to acknowledge that they are appreciated and history will show that without their individual and collective efforts our great Club would not exist.

SENIOR’S REPORT

Season 2012 has seen a number of new players arrive at the club to start their journey towards senior selection through the colts. The early rounds have seen a steady improvement in the team’s performances as the squad and coaching staff become more familiar with one another.

The colts are strongly represented in the Mariners squad with Andrew Blight, Beau Webster, Jake Murphy, Nathan Douglas, Matthew Ling & Nick Cherry all pressing for selection. Likewise there is good representation in the U16 state squad with Jarrod Harper, Ben Ling, Ashton Dickenson, Mitchell Hibberd & Harrison Bailey having already made their mark at colts level this season.

Zac Mastracola after crossing from North Hobart has been working hard coming back from injury and is making strong claims for senior selection. The backline led by Captain Sean Tisdale has been miserly and making life difficult for opposition sides, Reyne Westbury has added an X factor in every position he has filled, while up forward the elusive Ed Stanley has been well supported by Wade Burgess who has impressed throughout the pre season. Gabby Chambers has been another tireless worker making his mark along with the many other talented youngsters at the club.

The talented youth at the club give good reason to be excited about the remainder of the season.

49 Reyne WESTBURY

After a few frustrating seasons with injury, Zac is starting to hit his straps as a tough midfielder. His confidence has grown over preseason and is now looking to stake his claim at a spot in our midfield. He has great courage and hits the contest hard.

This youngster has some freakish ability and loves to take a hanger. Has gone from a leading forward to a solid defender.

Development Series

Once again Clarence was a professional outfit when taking the field for the Easter development series held at North Hobart Oval during the Easter holidays. The teams were made up of players from throughout our zone including the junior clubs of Lindisfarne, Brighton and Clarence. While the teams kicking for goal was a bit off the group was galvanised through the even performance across the field which has led to 10 from each age group being invited to participate in the training which leads to the selection in the Blue VS Gold series held in June. These numbers are a clear indication of our presence and the building of stronger relationships within our associated junior clubs and for this I would really like to thank Lindisfarne, Brighton and Clarence junior clubs for their professionalism and “kids first” approach that has been really easy to work with. A big thank you also must go to the parents of all who participated across the two days; games like this don’t happen without the dedication of parents, so thank you.

Ray Worbey Constructions Academy

We are currently finalising numbers and training structure to which a select group from across our zone will be invited to enhance their skills and provide football education that will help serve them as they progress through the ranks at their current club and hopefully one day senior AFL football. The Academy’s aim is to provide the best of ‘what we know’ and pass this on to our youth through structured training drills, individual assessment of skill base and planned progression of deficiencies identified by coaching panel. The Coaching panel is headed by the state’s best player and senior captain Cameron Thurley and is ably assisted by senior Head and High Performance Coach Matthew Drury, current mariner and young gun Andrew Blight and myself. Our goal for the academy is to provide players with the tools to help them be best prepared for wherever their football takes them. The program is due to start on the 7th of June 2012, I wish these players all the best with the trainings ahead and hope they find the academy insightful, educating and enjoyable. At the conclusion of the program we will be enjoying a dinner to finalise and reflect on what we have been through as a group this will be held on the 2nd August 2012 at a venue to be announced soon.

The start to the season has seen us be in the position to challenge for a victory only to fall short in the last quarter in a number of games. We will continue to try and improve our consistency over the four quarters and we will go into each game with a belief that we can win if we apply ourselves to all facets of the game.

Showing continued good form are Aaron McNab and Quade Byard, the latter being one of our Vice Captains. Both players have continued on from 2011. Aaron’s selection in the State Squad is recognition of his efforts.

Experienced players who have given us direction and leadership are Kurt Heazlewood, Adam Flannery and Jeremy Soden who has shown that he is clearly a player that will succeed at TSL level after crossing over from Ulverstone at the start of the year. Younger players who have debuted this year Jordan Smith, Braden Van Buren and Claye Symmons have shown that they have the ability as we move forward. Jacob Campbell, Nathan Robertson and Klay Griffiths who debuted from Ulverstone at the start of the year are improving at TSL level also.

The players appreciate the continued support given by our loyal supporters and hopefully we will be able to repay that support with wins on the board in 2012.

Glen Lutwyche

The Total Performance Sports Devonport Football Club is entering an exciting period of its football revival.

The Magpies are showing steady improvement out on the ground in the early stages of the 2012 season and we look forward to further advancement on the field throughout 2012.

Congratulations to the Colts team on its first win of the season against South Launceston, a hard earned victory against a quality opponent that will no doubt give further encouragement to the boys in their quest to become a highly competitive force this year.

Off the field the drive continues to place the club in a sound financial position, ensuring the long term viability of the Club. I assure members and supporters the board is exploring every opportunity to achieve this goal and is currently in negotiation with a number of key stakeholders.

The board is keen to open the doors to football clubs in our region and other sporting bodies enabling all too fully utilise and expand the services offered to the local community.

We have our eyes firmly fixed on the future with the club providing a safe and enjoyable environment for the youth of our region.

This is already paying dividends with record numbers in junior development programme, we are confident the results will flow through to our colts and senior ranks in the very near future.

PRESIdENT’S REPORT

SENIOR’S REPORT

Since the start of the year the Colts have slowly started to gel as a side and have developed their skills in decision making and follow the structures that have been introduced to them.

The season started with a young and inexperienced side and we had injuries to a number of our older players. There has also been a number of our U17 team experience playing with our Colts.

Team Leaders Matty Damon and Adam Sullivan have provided good leadership along with Sam Lutwyche. Jack Vanderfeen who had a late start to the season has been in good form and under the guidance of the Colts coaching team led by Mark Lowe the team has gradually improved.

The team scored its first win not only for this season but also since the inception of the Colts competition against South Launceston in round 5 and this will provide a boost for upcoming games and provide a springboard for the rest of 2012.

It is also great to see former players Trent Graham, Brent Charlesworth, Tim Archer and Joel O’Donnell helping out. These former players are assisting Mark Lowe in the coaching department.

We are looking forward to a positive middle part of the season and we will continue to rotate our U17 players into the colts to give them the experience which will help them develop in future years.

CLUB PROFILE | dEVONPORT mAGPIES

The Devonport Football Club at the commencement of the football season finalised negotiations with the Statewide netball club Devon in a partnership where the football clubs full facilities can be enjoyed by the Devon Netball Clubs players and supporters. This partnership even gave the Netball Club the ability to run their own functions and raise their own funds through the facilities.

The local newspaper The Advocate ran the story in February announcing that the partnership could most likely be the first of its type in Tasmania. Announcements a few months later of another similar partnership in the South proclaiming their partnership was the first was, well let’s say, interesting.

Unfortunately, like the Football Club, Devon has had a difficult year on the court to date and currently after round 10 and with only 4 rounds to go Optomeyes Devon have managed one win and the 19’s & under one win and a draw. While the team endeavours to improve team performances on the court, we have had many individual player successes during the season.

Rebecca Hyland and Lisa Loubser were selected in the Tasmanian 17 & Under state team and Ebony Roberts was selected in the Tasmanian 19 & Under team, plus Kate Hyland was named reserve for this team which competed in the National Championships as the Silverdome in Launceston in March. Ebony Roberts and Lisa Loubser were then selected for the Tassie Spirit ANL (Australian National League) squad. 2012 has seen the introduction of 14 & Under and 16 & Under Optomeyes Devon development squads. Eight girls from these teams have made it through to the Phase 2 camp for 15 & under state team selections. Congratulations to Natalia Nyesu, Sarah Crawford, Rebecca Greaves, Hannah Lee, Hannah Males, Abbey McCormack, Hayley Slatter and Shea Stevens.

The development of these exciting young players and many others will form the foundation for future success for Optomeyes Devon where we will be eager to become a force in the Aurora league competition.

The Netball Club thanks the support of the DFC and also our naming rights sponsor Optomeyes Devon and our other major sponsors, Chemmart Valley Road Pharmacy, So Silver So Gold and Mersey Link.

GlENORChY dISTRICT FOOTBAll ClUB

With a couple of disappointing losses early to Clarence and Lauderdale the Senior group have responded with two wins against Hobart and Nth Launceston to get our season on track. The turnaround has come through hard work and an emerging belief in each other. Against Clarence and Lauderdale we were unable to sustain the pressure for the full 4 quarters. We came up against Hobart who were coming of a big loss and we knew they would come out hard and they did leading by five goals at quarter time. This seemed to sting us into action and we came away to win by 51 points which could have been greater only for some ordinary kicking for goal.

Next we came up against North Launceston in wet and blustery conditions at KGV. We came out of the blocks well in the opening quarter, but North hit back in the second. In the second half we were able to control the play and keep North goalless after halftime and have a solid 37 point win.

At KGV we are excited about what the future holds and we know the season will get harder and continue to test us in every way. We are looking forward to the challenge ahead and hope our wonderful passionate supporters continue to come along and see our side improve as the season goes on.

Ben Beams

Following a busy pre-season it has been a welcome sight to see Glenorchy Football Club junior and senior teams take to the field with strong results being recorded at all levels.

The hard fight for lights at KGV has seen them receive a good work out this season with many supporters seeing the novelty in Saturday afternoon games. The Clubs players and supporters are also benefitting from the efforts of our hard working volunteers to prepare and operate the Club for the season however attendances to games and membership are the most tangible evidence of your support. Business Manager Scott Morrisby is keeping these high on the agenda over the coming months.

Off the field the Board continues to progress the redevelopment of the Clubrooms and has undertaken a significant initiative by joining forces with the very successful Cripps Waratah State League Netball Club and progressing arrangement to a new level with the Glenorchy Cricket Club, the Glenorchy Junior Football Club and local Sports Medicine Group Revive Health. We are helping to create a totally community based resource around the redevelopments at KGV.

The Board will keep you across developments, including through the Club website www.glenorchymagpies.org.au and urges all supporters to take advantage of the membership packages, be part of this exciting and developing Club and we look forward to seeing you at KGV.

PRESIdENT’S REPORT

SENIOR’S REPORT

After 7 rounds the colts boys are 4 wins and 3 losses after a great win over North Hobart

After a big pre season and some impressive practice match form we went in to round 1 full of confidence but we where showed up by Clarence in the last half for a 45 point defeat. The lads showed great character the following week with a very gutsy victory over Lauderdale and then gritted out a win against Hobart. Against North Launceston we played some of our best football and won a thriller by 2 points with scores level with only 53 seconds on the clock. However we were overpowered by Launceston and Burnie in the the following weeks before bouncing back to our best against North Hobart.

We would like to congratulate Jacob “ Stink “ Lincoln on being appointed Captain and Timmy “Chiz “ Butterworth as Vice captain.

The lads are working hard on the track and are doing everything in their power to become better players and strive for senior selection in the future which will hold our Club in good stead for coming years.

Many thanks to Assistant Coach, Sam Coutts, and all team managers, trainers, drink boys, runners and any other support volunteers. Your support is very much appreciated.

Rocket Callinan

CLUB PROFILE | GlENORChY mAGPIES

Our Club has been very lucky with the support we receive from our SFL Zone Clubs in Claremont and New Norfolk. We look forward to both clubs having very successful seasons in the SFL and both have started with some early wins. A number of former Glenorchy players are playing at both clubs and last season’s interim coach Kim Excell has taken charge with Assistant Zane Nossiter. All senior players have been divided between both clubs, as their feeder clubs and we have be very impressed with the professionalism shown towards all players concerned.

Development Series U14/15 2012

The TSL Zone Development Series was held on the 10th and 12th of April. The U14s were on Tuesday and played two games for a win against North Hobart and a narrow loss to Clarence in the 2nd game. All the boys played well and the feedback from Selectors is that we will have strong representation in the southern Blue vs Gold series in the June school holidays. The U15s won both their games against Lauderdale and Nth Hobart and also look like having a good number of boys to be selected for the next stage. S am Bouwman did a wonderful job coaching the U14s as did Dave Hunt with the U15s.

Although the club is yet to register a win, there are real signs that a win is not far away. Our senior boys have been competitive in all but one game and have lead at quarter time in at least three of our six games so far.

Over recent weeks we have seen marked improvement in the accountability of our younger players and their willingness to sacrifice their own game for the betterment of the team as a whole. This is perhaps one of the hardest lessons to teach and our coaching panel are excited to see the great improvement in this area.

All involved at the club should be proud of the way they have conducted themselves and supported the club so far. Our hard working board, led by Sean Sullivan, should be commended for the time each individual puts into their role and have all at the club moving in the same direction.

Our club has had perhaps the biggest turnover of bodies both on and of field but are perhaps one of the closest groups I have been involved with in football. With this in mind I am excited by the thought of what this group may achieve in the remainder of 2012 and the years ahead.

I sincerely thank all Hobart supporters for their support so far this year and see you at the footy.

Anthony McConnon

We are now a significant way through 2012, and while we have not got a win on the board on the field, there has been significant change around the Hobart Football Club that is setting it up for the next twenty years.

Our board re-structure this year has reaped benefits with an improved business focus and a strong commitment to strategic planning. We have now a clear path to grow our club.

Our membership base continues to grow, and recently we saw brand new members in 2012 exceed that of our entire membership level for last year. This is a significant achievement and is based on the clubs commitment to improve its communication with all current and past members, supporters and friends of the club.

The role of the volunteer in a football club is a vital element to its success. This year we have seen many new faces offering their time to volunteer which is a wonderful accomplishment, but in order to avoid the perennial problem of too few doing most of the work we must further increase our volunteers.

Thank you to all our rusted on and new members and supporters – we truly value your support and look to repay your faith in our new direction in the not too distant future.

Sean Sullivan

With 15 new players joining the team this season, cohesion continues to be a work in progress. Combine this with being a very young squad (18 players under 17 years of age) and it has been a steep learning curve in coming to terms with the speed and physicality of Colts football. Having said that, the team continues to improve and the last outing against North Hobart was a very competitive one.

The opportunity to train regularly with the Seniors has been of great benefit, not only as regards physical and skill development, but also in gleaning the right mental attitude to play at TSL level. Many thanks to senior coach Anthony McConnon and assistant Heath Neville for providing the right leadership and culture for these young players to develop. Many Colts players have already been blooded in the seniors this year with 3 sixteen year olds being in the firsts line-up against the Demons.

Congratulations to young Tigers, Marcus Gardner and Jock Stalker who have been named in the State U16 team to play in the curtain raiser to the Hawthorn v Fremantle game in recent weeks.

Though we have yet to notch our first victory the spirit within the team is fantastic and each week we continue to attract new recruits.

Maxie never lets his small frame get in the way of getting in and under.

Has had a strong start to the season in the colts with some senior appearances.

The young ruckman has shown he has the body and ability to match it with the TSL big men.

Suffering from injury for the first part of 2012, the tigers are looking forward to the return of this young excitement machine in the second half of the season.

Forward with good dukes. Enjoys a game of bingo also.

With a mature understanding of the game the 16 year old has made a very noticeable impact in our senior line up this year.

Ask those who can’t count and they will tell you that Studdly bounced the ball 13 times in one run during a practice match this year. He is an exciting talent who loves to run with the ball

Hendo has shown what great dedication can do to performance on the field.

Quin is one of the fittest blokes on the track, colts and seniors, and has shown he can used it on the field.

Chicken as he is know is a state long jump champion. He has played strongly in the colts this year and made his debut in the seniors also.

Roz is a taller colt who has put some solid performances on the park already this year.

Was once the fast man in Tasmania. The boy can run, and loves to kick a goal.

Rivals Joe Dirt for the worst hair cut going about, but can play football.

Deano has been playing a great role running out of the back line this year.

Small and hard working, Shaun loves to run and break the lines.

Beech loves to watch re-runs of Rocky 1-5. Has had a good start to season 2012.

DOS has shown a great deal of form this year and is looking for a strong second half of the season.

Dan has shown plenty of promsie this year with his tap work - with the ability to follow up.

You can tell Jimmy on the field by his sailing tan. Plenty of skill and a big body.

This young boy is seriously big. Coming up from Sandy Bay this year Stevo has shown some good form.

Has the best name on the park, but Whiz has also shown this year he is a consitent footy player.

Rhys is known for his love of the Black Eyed Peas, and his rugged attack on the footy.

Big Louis has had a great start to the year. Big bodied ruckman who is on the up each week.

Cam was recruited from Lindisfarne this year and has played a stellar start to the year in the colts. Be sure to look out for Cam pushing for senior selection in the second half of the season.

A big man with a big future ahead of him. Marcus is currently in the State Acadamy program

14 Dion CLARKPlaying a role running out of the back line, Dion has shown great improvement over the start of the season.

The Hobart Football Club is continuing to develop a strong pathway within our Junior Football Club and also within our development zone. A recent article in The Mercury is featured. We hope to see many more young Tigers joining us in the Den and progressing in Australian football.

Tiger cubs doubled & tripled

UNDER-8s AFL games may be contact free, but that won’t stop opposing teams from seeing double, or even triple, when they take the field against Hobart Tigers Black.

The young litter of Tigers have a one-two, one-two-three combo most teams would envy, with a bit of double trouble in Jensen and Ayrton Cooke, 6, and the triple threat of Cade, Kobi and Jacob Apted, 7.

Brothers playing on the same team is not exactly a rarity for Aussie Rules, nor are twins, with the likes of Brad and Chris Scott having taken to the field and then the coaches box.

But having two sets of identical siblings on one team has proven a bit confusing for the young Tigers outfit even for the parents.

The Apted trio’s mum, Jess Apted, said she couldn’t really tell her boys apart when they took the field, relying on the numbers - 4, 5 and 6 - to make the distinction.

“It’s a bit hard when they’re out there running around - I’m definitely guilty of calling out the wrong name on a few occasions,” she said.

Aryton and Jensen’s dad, Alan Cooke, said it was hard to differentiate between them.

“Apart from my boys and the triplets, a lot of the kids on the team look pretty similar actually,” he said with a laugh.

But while the parents may not have a full grasp on the who’s who, coach Matthew Ferguson has figured out his own special formula for the boys.

“I tell them apart by looking at their boots,” he said.Story (James Bresnehan) and Photo (Sam Rosewarne) courtesy of The Mercury Newspaper

UmPIRES TO WATChState Representative Match Umpire Appointments

Wrest Point State League General Manager, Shaun Young, recently announced the umpire appointments for the State representative match between Tasmania and the VFL that was held at Blundstone Arena, Bellerive on Saturday 26 May.

The Tasmanian umpires named were:

Field: Ben Lehner from Hobart (aged 24) and Nic Saltmarsh from Ulverstone (aged 21)

Boundary: Paul Bidgood from Ulverstone (aged 39) and Adam Reardon from Hobart (aged 19)

Goal: Aaron Jones from Launceston (aged 22)

Emergency Field: Raymond Mee from Ulverstone (aged 30)

Emergency Boundary: Joshua Enniss from Smithton (aged 22)

Emergency Goal: Brayden White from Hobart (aged 18)

The three VFL officiating umpires in the match were: David Harris (Field Umpire), Jordan Andrews (Boundary Umpire) and Peter Balding (Goal Umpire).

The only two members of the crew who have previously been involved in an Interstate Match are Paul Bidgood and Raymond Mee.

Remarkably, Bidgood umpired the last time Tasmania played the VFL at North Hobart in 1998, when Tasmania won by 35 points.

Bidgood has had a long and distinguished career spanning 22 years, officiating in over 300 senior matches and presiding in 11 senior Grand Finals (five in the previous State League and six in the Southern Football League).

Mee officiated in the last Interstate Match played in Hobart when Tasmania played Queensland at Blundstone Arena in 2009.

AFL Tasmania State Umpiring Manager/Coach, Mike Brown, says Bidgood’s appointment is significant.

“Paul has always been a very strong endurance runner but this year he has further developed his speed and acceleration points,” Brown said.

“His dedication and commitment are outstanding and his professionalism is second to none.”

Tasmanian State League General Manager, Shaun Young said the State Match was a tremendous incentive for the umpires.

“Apart from the TSL Grand Final this is the most prestigious appointment for an umpire to officiate in,” Young said.

RACT INSURANCE PlAYER OF ThE YEAR AWARdNorthern players dominate the early RACTI voting

Last year’s premiers and grand finalist dominate the early voting in the 2012 RACTI player of the year award. Such is the dominance of the undefeated Burnie Dockers that experienced midfielder Luke Shackleton tops the list of votes after round 7 with 16 votes followed by his ruckman/forward (the best big man in Tasmania) Jason Laycock sitting in second place on 11 votes.

The two Dockers are closely followed by Launceston’s senior pair Scott Stephens and Adam Derbyshire both on 8 votes. There is only one player from the South, Glenorchy’s Jaye Bowden, featured in the top 5 after 7 rounds. Jaye has 9 votes, following Glenorchy’s recent improvement in form.

At the end of the home and away season the player with the most votes is awarded the RACT Insurance Player of the Year and in doing so wins a $2,500 holiday travel package and $2,500 cash courtesy of RACT Insurance and RACT Travel.

• Tasmania has played Victorian representative teams on 44 occasions before today. Tasmania has tasted victory on 8 occasions and Victorian teams have won 34 times. In early days Tasmania played 2 draws with Victorian representative teams in 1893.

• Tasmania has on the majority of occasionsbeen selected as a representativeteam with players from the northern and southern regions of the State. The Victorian representative teams have in 41 instances been selected as representatives of the Victorian Football Association (VFA) or the Victorian Football League (VFL). In 1989 – 1991 there were 3 games contested under the ‘State of Origin’ format.

• Tasmania achieved arguably its greatestvictories against Victorian teams in 1960 when a VFL representative team was defeated by 7 points at York Park (now Aurora Stadium) and then again in 1990 when Tasmania defeated Victoria in a State of Origin game at North Hobart Oval. Both these Tasmanian teams have been recognised under the ‘Memorable Game’ category in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.

• Tasmania defeated the VFA by 100 points at the 1956 National Carnival in Perth. In the 1972 National Carnival, again in Perth, the VFL handed out a 182 point shellacking to Tasmania.

• The closest games between the combatants occurred in 1960 when Tasmania defeated the VFL by 7 points and then in 1962 the VFA turned the tables by 6 points with both games being played in Tasmania.

• The last time that Tasmania and a Victorian representative team played wasat North Hobart Oval in 1998. The VFA had morphed into the VFL after the formation of the AFL, but were no match for the Tasmanians who eased away to a 35 point win and another memorable victory for ‘The Map’ in the 1990s.

hISTORY INTERSTATE RESUlTS

mEmORABlE GAmEThe Tasmania State League has suffered a comprehensive 108 point loss to the Victorian Football League in the inter-league representative fixture for 2012.

The Tasmanian selectors had determined to adopt a long-term view in an endeavour to develop a squad capable of producing some competitive inter-league football over the next 6 years. However, the result against the VFL delivered a far more comprehensive loss than could have been predicted. Tasmania’s score of 3.11 (29) was the second lowest score in 100 years of Tasmania vs Victoria contests with only Tasmania’s 1953 National Carnival score of 2.8 (20) against the VFL/AFL being lower. The result was also Tasmania’s largest defeat against the VFA / VFL competition surpassing the 88 point loss in 1951.

For Tasmania the highlights were a competitive start to the game and some endeavour shown to win the tackle and hard ball get statistics. As well, the form of South Launceston player, Michael Musicka, will ensure he remains on the radar of AFL recruiters.

A further highlight was the awarding of the Lefroy Medal for Tasmanian best player to Clarence’s Brady Jones. In the course of less than 12 months Jones has played for Tasmania in both senior cricket and football.

2011 - Lauderdale v Glenorchy - 1,800

It has been a fairly solid, but very interesting start to the 2012 season for the Bombers.

After three good wins in the first three rounds, that consistency dropped off slightly with some losses to Burnie and Clarence, with one win in between those matches. Like most clubs, consistency and improvement is what we are concentrating on at the moment.

There is a good feeling within the group at the moment and a strong belief that if the team is able to play the game style we want, that the year will be very exciting.

We have six boys in the Mariner program this year and they will all be testing themselves out in the coming weeks against the best youth age players in the country. We wish them all the best and hope they give themselves the best opportunity to go on to bigger things and also to come back and play some good football for the club.

It will be a great season of TSL football to watch this year, a fairly even competition with some surprise improvers. Be sure to keep an eye on the Lauderdale Bombers in the coming months!

Darren Winter

Lauderdale footy club has entered the 2012 season with plenty happening.

Our clubroom renovations are nearing completion, which includes new public amenities, bar area and player gym. These facilities are part of our Club’s overall plan to ensure Lauderdale continues to improve what it offers our players, members and guests. On the back of these facilities, our coterie group, Hi Marque Club, is ramping up for the remainder of the season. Prominent guest speakers combined with a sit down meal (inclusive of drinks), will be available for members and guests – contact Tony Beakley (0417 816 578) or Darren Winter (0448 144 440) to book your seat.

Congratulations to Joe Edwards on his appointment in his full time role as Lauderdale’s Development Officer. Under the guidance of Darren Winter, General Manager – Football Operations, he will be taking the club into the schools and general community, and working with all clubs within our zone, to assist in the development of football and promoting what the Lauderdale club is all about.

On the field we have had a reasonable start to the year and are confident of continuing to demonstrate our competitiveness at TSL level. However, in order to continue to develop we require the ongoing support of both new and old members. If you haven’t already joined up as a member, jump in and be a true part of our club.

PRESIdENT’S REPORT

SENIOR’S REPORT

Despite a less than ideal start to the 2012 season with 3 wins and 3 losses I am confident that the young group of talent we have at our club will continue to develop, support each other and start to play consistent team football.

A hard fought contest against our Eastern Shore rival Clarence was a true indicator of how we perform as a team in pressure situations and how we must capitalise on all opportunities. Unfortunately for us Clarence handled the day better than we did.

We are delighted to have some new faces to this year’s list including Westbury, Bellchambers & Chynoweth to name a few.

It is very pleasing to see the likes of Matthewson, Lewis and Preshaw all playing consistent football thus far as well as outstanding performances from young Josh McGuinness who has proven he has the ability to play across all lines.

A great start to his goal kicking season was quickly snatched from young forward Ethan Whish Wilson through a knee injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the2012 season.

We now face a tough challenge however with the depth our club has built over the years and the culture that lies within there is no doubt this team will rise to deliver the results we are aiming for.

Mick Francis

CLUB PROFILE | lAUdERdAlE BOmBERS

There are exciting times ahead for the Lauderdale Football Club, especially in the junior ranks associated with the club.

Our U13s have had a strong start to the year, sitting on equal wins and losses.

Our U14s are travelling along quite well, having not lost a game this season. There is a lot of talent in this group and they play a great brand of footy, coach Reid Hooker has certainly got them up and going.

The U15s had a slower start to the year but coach Ted ‘skip’ Cook has made them knuckle down they have made a big improvement and playing some good football.

Trevor Morton’s U16 team are also improving week to week, there is some very talented kids in that team who we expect to have bright futures.

Our U18s have had a complete turnaround since their first game against South Launceston, beating all teams in the competition, except for Sandy Bay, a game that went down in a thriller with only eight points the difference. Samuel Proud and Max Williamson have had great starts to the season and are in great form.

At our club we have just announced the Marcus Fitze Development Squad. This is a first for our club and zone, as a program like this has never happened before. The idea for this squad is for the most talented juniors in our zone, From under thirteens, fourteens and fifteens, to be in a squad together, they will all train together every three weeks. This was designed to give all our juniors the chance to learn more about what is expected when it is their turn to participate in the under sixteen and under eighteen state academies, as well as helping to further develop their Football.

In our feeder clubs in our zone, the Sorell U15s are sitting mid-table, with two wins and four losses, with the U13s having one win and four losses in a very strong competition.

Pre season over and leading into round 1 after an extremely positive pre season who could have thought what our football club had in the weeks to come! Six weeks in and a third of the season gone and we have already played 10 debutants and rotated 34 players in our senior team. However not all is doom and gloom as we are still sitting in third position on the ladder at 5 and 1 and the colts second on their ladder with the same win/ loss ratio. As our depth has been tested the under 18s have fielded a competitive team each week and have won their last 2 games after a shaky season start.

Development was certainly a key area of focus for our club before the season started and to be able to give so many younger players experience at state wide level and game time can only benefit the club not only as this year progresses but in the future. I look forward to the opportunity for the players to stand up in the next stage of the season.

Anthony Taylor

Season 2012 was always going to be a difficult year, history tells us what a challenge it would be to emulate last years success, premierships in both the seniors and colts together with a clean sweep of most individual awards on offer.

Reflecting on our success in 2011, if there is one moment that I remember vividly amongst the many, was our loss to Burnie. After going through the roster season undefeated I and many others around the club were obviously down and feeling our season may have come to a premature end. However Coach Anthony Taylor was positive, upbeat and regarded this defeat as a learning curve, it would ultimately spur us on to win the premiership. The mark of a great coach is how you react in defeat, Tayls certainly rated 10/10 from me.

Five games in and we are four wins and one loss to Burnie by a huge margin. There is no doubt that it is going to take a monumental effort from the whole club to reach the heights of 2011. The dreaded injury curse has taken its toll and tested the depth and resilience of the whole playing group. Thanks to the strength of our coaching staff and promising depth of talent who have stepped up to senior level, I think that we will again be challenging for premiership honours in 2012.

PRESIdENT’S REPORT

SENIOR’S REPORT

With the first part of the season completed, we have made a solid start to set ourselves up for the next phase of the season, where we will be missing players with school and state football commitments.

This, along with a number of injuries early in the season represents a challenge in regards to our depth, but certainly provides us with the opportunity to look at players from our Under 18s at the Colts level.

We have also seen a number of Colts players get the opportunity to play senior football and this provides our younger players with the best opportunity to play at the highest level possible.

With any football team, we are reliant on the volunteers to help from week to week, and with the Colts we have Anthony Axton, Geoff Foley and Will Campbell providing valuable assistance from the coaching perspective, and Bob Campbell who is our Team Manager.

CLUB PROFILE | lAUNCESTON BlUES

Masters Football - The Launceston Football Club is proud to have a team in the Tasmanian Masters Competition. This years team is an interesting mix, coached by Launceston stalwart Michael Cook (133 senior games with LFC) and assisted by Geoff Foley (154 senior games with LFC).

Players hail from differing football backgrounds, although some have played footy at Launceston the majority have been drawn from NTFA clubs. Even a late convert from basketball proving it is never to late to live the AFL dream. Although age is no barrier the average age is in the early 40s the youngest player being 36 to the oldest allegedly 53.

This years Northern Competition consists of 5 to 6 games, 1 per month, a Northern Grandfinal and the winner travelling to Hobart to play the 3rd placed team in the Southern Completion. There are four teams in the northern competition, being North West Coast, St Marys, Triabunna/ Swansea and Launceston.

The only modifications to the rules are

• No third man up in the ruck

• No knees in pack marking

• No sling tackles

At the culmination of the season a Tasmanian team is selected with this years carnival being played in Townsville, Queensland. Last year Launceston had three players selected in the Tasmanian team - Michael Cook, Craig Richards and Craig Jenkins.

The boys train once per week on a Wednesday night at 6pm at Windsor Park. Still interested in footy, want to keep fit and have itchy feet? New players are always welcome, contact Geoff Foley 0418 579 223.

Two wins and four losses isn’t the start we were after and the pressure is already on to play finals. There have been signs however, that with an improvement in consistency over the whole game, we are capable of what is needed to win enough games to feature in the September action.

With six rounds played, eleven players have made their debuts for North Hobart. This list includes our recruits of Jake Briggs, Larry.Owen, Jamie Clark, Calen Jeffrey and Claude Alcorso from Hobart, Jarrod Hibberd from Lauderdale, Rory Fairbairn from Queenscliffe and Brad Coad from Clarence. Young Demons making their senior debut so far are Jack Sandric, Patrick Fisher and Hayden Parker.

There are a few familiar faces who have returned after time away: Tom Allwright, Tom Reid, Robert Salter and George Marshall.

Balancing the team with our regulars such as Street, Murphy, Wells, Adrian Williams, Hugh Williams, Di Venuto, Wilson and Gardam was always going to be challenging but the line coaches in Steve Fry, Robbie Johnston and Tony Martyn along with Assistant Coach Michael McGregor and Specialist Coaches Ken Hall, Rob Devine and Owen Johnston are bringing things together slowly but surely.

With players returning from injury, suspension and unavailability over the coming weeks I expect to see a huge improvement in our on field performances.

The Colts have had a strong start to the season with a convincing couple of wins. Balancing this against some narrow losses to top teams at times when players have been recruited to the seniors to counter injuries and losses has highlighted the team’s depth and adaptability.

With an objective on improving and developing players to their best potential and providing an opportunity pathway for aspiring players, it has been critical to foster a good partnership with the North Hobart JFC, and we mention Julie Doran, Adam Doran and Jim Ransom. I believe it is vital to provide feeder development opportunities for players and it has been really positive to embed a system where we work on a high rotation strategy so players get a lot of game time and enhance their skills across the field providing every chance to be the best senior footballers they can be.

Pleasing to see a number of our Colts elevated to seniors including Jack Sandric and Hayden Parker who have both demonstrated promising future careers. Meanwhile it has been rewarding to recognise fresh young talent out of the juniors including Theo Jaymes, Sam Duigan, Ryan Edmundson and Angus O’Meara.

We wish to thank Darren Perry, Craig Martin, Ricky McCulloch and all senior coaching staff, medical trainers and support staff from the North Hobart Football Club.

Michael McGregor

At this early stage of the season we have been disappointing with our win loss ratio, however the teams are starting to show signs of improvement. We have been playing a number of colt’s players in the seniors giving them the opportunity to step up to the next level, all these have played admirably for the red and blue.

We have been hit hard with a number of players being unavailable due to injuries, suspensions , the Mariners program and the wedding of former player Luke Curtain in Fiji. Congratulations Luke.

The North Hobart Women’s team has also been hard at training and they have just played their first game of the season with a 3 point win over last year’s grand finalists Launceston.

The board and its band of volunteers and members continue to work on a number of projects for the club moving forward, including continued work on the lights project, the new constitution and applying for a new Tasmanian State League licence.

The club recently held a Special General Meeting to discuss applying for a new TSL licence and everyone is to be congratulated for the passion and professionalism shown as we move forward.

There are a number of social events for the year which are listed in our events calendar as well as every Wednesday evening the Bingo sessions in our clubrooms.

CLUB PROFILE | NORTh hOBART dEmONS

Since its inception in 1979 the North Hobart Junior Football Club (NHJFC) has been a primary feeder club to the North Hobart Football Club (NHFC). Over this time NHJFC has provided a stream of talented youngsters who have gone on to succeed with the Demons at under age and senior levels and of course even at VFL/AFL levels. Among former NHJFC juniors selected to move to the big league are:

Sam Darley (GWS), Aaron Hall (Gold Coast Suns), Liam Jones (Western Bulldogs), Colin Garland (Melbourne), Billy Morrison (Collingwood), Leigh Brockman (Geelong), Gerard Bennett, Daryn Cresswell (Sydney), James Cook (Carlton), Paul Williams (Collingwood), Bradley Plain (Essendon), Simon Minton-Connell (Carlton)

From early days when 3 teams were fielded, NHJFC has steadily developed into a 17 team club in 2011 - providing opportunities for 332 youngsters to play in teams from Auskick to Under 16 level. Season 2012 sees another increase in numbers, further enhanced by the introduction of STJFL Under 18s – a move that enhances pathway options to NHFC Colts, TSL seniors and beyond. The relationship between both Demons clubs has become closer as a result, given the weekly transition of many juniors between Under 18s and the Colts.

The size of NHJFC’s junior program involves a need for multiple venues. Home games are at John Tunbull Oval (Lenah Valley) for juniors and New Town Oval for Auskick and youth teams.

NHJFC conducts community-focussed events throughout the season to aid various charities and support developmental programs. The perennial favourite is surely “Ronald McDonald House” Day - this gala day of junior footy has been conducted for over 10 years at North Hobart Oval, raising over $30,000 along the way for this worthy cause. The event is supported each year by North Hobart Football Club, competing clubs, sponsors, Hobart City Council and our footy umpires too.

NHJFC (plus Huonville, Cygnet, Kermandie and Sand Bay junior clubs) are key stakeholders in the NHFC TSL Under 14 /15 Development Series. NHJFC juniors graduating from the 2011 program and moving to State Under 16’s were Angus O’Meara, Matt Doran, Connor Brownless and Jack Sandric. The 2012 development program is still underway, so keep an eye out for these players and more exciting NHJFC juniors in the seasons to come, as the NHJFC program delivers even further success.

BOmBERS AT A GlANCE

The North Launceston Football Club is looking forward to the new season with much anticipation.

We welcome new coaches this season – Zane Littlejohn (Seniors), Adrian Smith (Colts), and David Mankelow (Under 18s). All three are fully dedicated to the development of the players and together with their respective assistant coaches, have developed strategies and plans which augers well for all teams.

Much work has been done over the past months to finalise the team lists, and to that end, special thanks to Tony “Ossie” Young for the tremendous amount of work he has done in this area.

We welcome to the Club Carins brothers Chris and Sam, Jordan Cousins, Cody Weedon, Daniel Roozendal, Toby Nankervis, William McBride, Josh Ponting, Connor Bramich, James Peck, Eric Izbiki, Andrew Whitmore. Last year saw many of our Colts step up to the senior mark. These players, coupled with longer term players in Wager, Viney, O’Sign, Harding and Praciak make up the strong and exciting team for 2012.

Very important to the Club are our valued sponsors and our members. You all play a vital role to the success of NLFC and tell our players that you value the dedication that they all put in.

Our Club website continues to remain our major forum for the provision of information to our members. www.northlauncestonfc.com.au

North Launceston FC no longer have first rights to Aurora Stadium; in fact we are just another tenant who has to apply for usage. Sharing a ground with an AFL club is not easy. We have given up first rights to what was our training and playing facility.

If the Club relied only on TSL football income and remained at Aurora Stadium it would post a loss of around $150,000 each season.

Therefore to survive without any additional support from AFL-Tasmania alternative and substantial external income must be derived.

The financial contribution we make to the Council each year is substantial and most likely more than any other TSL club pays for venue accommodation, training and playing facilities.

We must work hard and take every opportunity available to us to utilise a dedicated group of both paid and volunteer labour to raise revenue for the club.

We also have a past player, official and volunteer association called the Northonians with over 130 paid up members, many of whom volunteer services to the club during the year. They also pay rent to the Council to access Aurora facilities they can use to generate income.

Collectively we give up seeing any football and work 12-16 hour days on AFL Aurora games to ensure the Clubs function and other commitments are met.

That’s how we can afford to stay at Aurora Stadium – hard work – there is no easy ride.

Thane Brady

PRESIdENT’S REPORT

SENIOR’S REPORT

The Northern Bombers Colts over the first 5 rounds have shown continued improvement and development. Being a relatively young group who are willing to listen, the results so far have been encouraging. The main focus over the first few rounds of the season has been on building a team spirit and developing an understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Sitting in the top five with a 3-2 win/loss record and a couple of close defeats to quality opposition our goals are firmly set on developing into a consistent outfit capable of playing finals football.

This year the Colts have played consistent team football with an attitude of team first and a willingness to accept any challenge presented to them. We have been able to develop 4 young players who have made their senior debut and a number of other players who are putting pressure on the senior team each week.

The Colts program has a dedicated group of assistance coaches who have given up countless hours of their time to help develop this young group. Without their enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge the group’s development and success so far this season would not be so far advanced. With a positive attitude and a culture of feedback this group of young players will continue to develop into a consistent hardworking football side.

Over the Easter holidays on April 10 and 11 the annual talent identification series was held in Devonport and at Youngtown Ovals for the U14 and U15 age groups.

The teams are made up of players from TSL zones and the North Launceston zone which covers the whole North East was very well represented from St Helens around to George Town and into the city area.

The U14 team travelled to Devonport on April 10 and the boys played very well winning both games easily and a number of players playing very well. The boys really did come together well as a group and showed maturity above their years the way they handled the day on and off the ground.

Jason Curtis coached the team and did an outstanding job. To all the parents who travelled and helped on the day I thank you and look forward to seeing you all next year in the U15.

The U15 team played on April 11 at Youngtown Oval and the players played very well and in a hard fought first game against a quick Launceston team lost be nine points . The boys then played Burnie and were great winning by 60 pts with every player playing his role and they all deserved this win.

Darren Crawford coached the team and the boys learnt a lot from the direction Darren gave. Thanks again to all the parents who helped and travelled and also to Tony Young jnr for the assistance and time he gives each year to this series and to trainer Bob O’Keefe.

St Helens trip with new footballs

Football Operations Manager, Scott Hawkins, made a visit to the St. Helens Football Club in January and presented Head Trainer Alan Salter with 9 Sherrin Footballs.

These footballs will be used by the Club at training throughout the 2012 season and St. Helens Club was very appreciative of the donation. We wish St. Helens all the best for season 2012.

After a skill development based pre season our players have started the season with 7 consistent performances, currently we sit 4 - 3. The games against Launceston and Clarence have traditionally been extremely one sided. This year we have played both sides and went down by 26 and 31 points respectively. This has given all players confidence no matter who we play. Our 4 wins equate to the Clubs best start to any State League season, while the two wins against North Launceston are also a first.

Our form in the first 7 games has been further reflected with State selection for Jay Blackberry, Jobi Harper, Bart McCulloch, Michael Musicka and Chris Taylor. We wish the boys the best of luck.

The rapid improvement of many players has helped select a balanced team week to week. There have not been many changes with only 26 senior players to date. This has helped players settle into their roles and play consistent football.

We seek further improvement in 2012 and understand that we still have a gap to bridge to the top teams. That is a strong focus for all involved, including a fantastic group of young kids coming through the talent pathway - 6 State U16s and 2 State U18s. We hope that the support that the community has shown to date continues and hope to see you at the footy.

Mitch Thorp

This year has seen a significant change in the clubs on-field performance. With several wins under our belt the atmosphere around the club is also changing with members returning and new interest in the club from the wider community.

As we continue on a more successful year I would like to highlight some of the hard work that has been occurring behind the scenes.

Firstly, the work of our playing group who have been dedicated not only to training and playing hard, but also in the increased activity in club social functions and other off field activities.

Secondly I would like to recognise the work within our junior club who have this year seen an influx of new volunteers to help the Bulldogs build a strong future and to keep our junior club strong.

Thirdly, we have had several new sponsors come on board in various parts of the club from juniors to some of our functions including the Football Legends Dinner.

Finally I would like to thank the work of all volunteers, including the board, members and others in every aspect of club life. The club has a bright future with many new projects developing over the next year and is a club that we can be proud of.

PRESIdENT’S REPORT

SENIOR’S REPORT

This year our Colts have had a competitive start to 2012. Starting down at Lauderdale round 1 it was nice to begin the season with a win, which gave the boys some enthusiasm after a tough pre season. For many of these boys it was the first real pre season that they have taken part in.

Following on from there we have given the opportunity to plenty of our up and coming players to play at Colts level with a large amount of these boys being still able to play under 16 football. We have had 6 selected in the state under 16s, which I believe is a great achievement and we wish those boys the best of luck in their carnival.

From my side coming back into coaching this year I have really enjoyed trying to develop this young group to be ready for senior football over the next couple of years with some already debuting in 2012.

Currently we sit 2 wins and 4 losses but the pleasing thing about our losses is we haven’t been blown away. Over the coming month we will certainly be looking to improve our record and hope to press for finals football.

CLUB PROFILE | SOUTh lAUNCESTON BUlldOGS

In 2012 South Launceston football club is undertaking a variety of initiatives to help grow our relationships within the zone.

Our first key relationship has been with the Prospect Football Club to help put together the South-Prospect Hawks. In their second season in the NTFA Div 2 they have made some good in roads to being more competitive and we certainly hope that this grows into a strong alliance as it continues. With three wins on the board early they will be looking to continue to build.

We also have good relations with NTFA Division 1 Clubs in Longford, Bracknell and Deloraine in our zone. We have seen a regular interchange of players between our Clubs and hope that this continues to benefit all as players take different pathways depending on their footy aspirations.

Also, once again in 2012 we are continuing to work more closely with the likes of the South Launceston, East Launceston, Longford and Prospect Junior football clubs and develop a plan for a positive path way from junior football into the TSL ranks.

Already, this is starting to bear more fruit as we have players such as Matt Hanson (East Launceston), Andrew Zammit (Prospect) and Ryan Davis (South Launceston) all pressing for senior selection and performing well.

We have also seen a number of players selected in State Squads in 2012 and they represent our pathways, including: U16 – Zammit, Casey Reissig, Hamish Leedham (Prospect); Jordan Bennett, Lucas Crawford and Tim Jones (South Launceston). U18 – Will Hanson (Longford); Matt Hanson (East Launceston). Seniors – Bart McCulloch and Michael Musicka (Longford), Jay Blackberry, Jobi Harper and Chris Taylor (South Launceston).

Our Club Development Manager is attending school clinics and helping to grow the game from a grass roots level. Also, our High Performance Manager the Club has just undertaken the Talent Development Series for the more talented youth players from the under 14 and 15 age groups. The pleasing outcome from these games was that we were very competitive against all 5 northern clubs with one of our groups going through undefeated. We also had a large number of players make it through to the next stage of this first step in the talent pathway.
