President’s Message As my term as President of NATAS approaches its end in December, I realize that the year has sped by quickly and my opportunity to help set the agenda for the society is passing. Our conference this year in Orlando was successful in that the number of papers and attendees returned to the levels of the recent past. The executive committee has identified some ways to increase the value of membership and increase the pool of available members:

• You will see some significant enhancements to our website in the near future as we add a members-only section that includes access to past conference proceedings.

• We have a more visible presence on Facebook and LinkedIn. • Local section programs continue to be supported, and we will seek to expand into other areas

having significant concentrations of thermal analysis professionals. • We have a slate of well qualified candidates of officers for the future. • Our financial records have been audited more thoroughly than in the past.

While the activities of the executive committee and society staff are not always apparent, the benefits of those activities should be. I thank all of our volunteers and encourage anyone who believes in the value of the society to offer their time, as well.

Best regards,

Eric Schoch

Editor’s Message Welcome to another issue of NATAS Notes. Another conference is now in the books. A special thanks to Peggy Cebe, conference chair, and Sindee Simon, technical chair, for organizing another successful conference. Also, Larry Judovits put on another great short course.

I hope everyone is making plans to attend next year’s conference in Bowling Green, KY. Wei-Ping Pan, conference chair, and Chi-Min Shu, technical program chair, are hard at work planning the conference. A special topics short course for the Sunday before the conference is being planned. Another short course, with hands-on components, will be held on Tuesday through Thursday of the conference week. Be sure to keep an eye on the website to get the latest updates on the plans for next year’s conference and short courses. For those who like to plan in advance, the 2014 conference is set for September 15-17 in Santa Fe, NM, with Sindee Simon as conference chair.

As always, NATAS Notes needs your input. Please submit articles and informational pieces to us. If you are unsure of which editor to submit the piece to or it just doesn’t fit into one of the categories, just send it to me. NATAS Notes is here to support the thermal analysis community anyway that we can, so anything that you think would be useful to the community, let us know so that we can pass it along.

Following this issue, I will step down as the editor of NATAS Notes. The previous editor, Tina Adams, has graciously agreed to reprise her former role, and I know that she will do an outstanding job.

Sincerely,

Quentin Lineberry

Poet’s Corner The 40th NATAS Conference

The 40th NATAS Conference It now is in the past But all of its participants Must admit it was a blast For it’s clear that our Society At last, has come of age And we know how to do things right With leaders bright and sage Peggy Cebe was the able one Who chaired our 40th meeting And Sindee Simon gets praise, too As her program took some beating Let’s not forget our Short Course chair Without him we’d be at a loss It got us off to one fine start Having Larry Judovits as boss Our honorees are known to all To Bob Howell the Mettler Award went While the Netzsch Distinguished Service Award Had Peggy Cebe as recipient Then the Fellowship of the Society On Riko Ozao was bestowed As one of our international members A great debt to her is owed Our major symposium was designed To celebrated the 81st birthday Of Professor Bernhard Wunderlich Alas, he wasn’t there as he passed away Yes, we’re sorry to say that on August 16 We lost a giant in our field For there’s no doubt that he stood out As around him polymer physics congealed His students and friends had gathered there To have a symposium that was simply superb As everyone within that room They hung on every word Now the location of the meeting Was surely one of the best Orlando just outdid itself To better it, we’d be hard pressed For everything was there at hand For participant and family From Disneyworld to Epcot and Disney Downtown, oh so handy Yes, we will come here one more time In the summer of 2016 When we host the next ICTAC Conference On which we are all so keen But the 41st NATAS will appear first Next year at Western Kentucky

23rd CTAS Annual Workshop and Exhibition 23rd  CTAS  ANNUAL  WORKSHOP  AND  EXHIBITION

Dear Colleagues,

Canadian Thermal Analysis Society (CTAS) will be holding its 23rd Annual Workshop and Exhibition on May 07-08, 2013 at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, North Campus, 2000 Simcoe St. North, Oshawa, Ontario, L1H 7K4, Canada. The two-day CTAS Workshop and Exhibition will start with a one-day training session, followed by one-day technical session with oral and poster presentations while the Instrument exhibitions will occur on both days.

There will be a special issue of the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (JTAC), dedicated to the 23rd CTAS Annual Workshop and Exhibition and the full papers will be published after the positive review at least by two referees. CTAS invites you to present a paper and/or poster in this Workshop and submit the full papers to JTAC Associate Editor, Dr. Subhash Mojumdar ([email protected]). The subject matter may cover any aspect of thermal analysis techniques, hyphenated techniques and applications to various materials.

To recognize the contribution by students to the field of thermal analysis, two awards will be presented to the student giving the best poster ($50) and oral ($200) presentations at the Workshop.

This occasion is an excellent opportunity to meet other thermal analysts and exhibitors, and to learn new applications in thermal analysis. Please show your support to the Canadian thermal analysis community by attending, presenting a paper and/or exhibiting your instruments in the Workshop and Exhibition.

Please visit www.ctas.org and/or contact Dr. Subhash Mojumdar for more information. The deadline for abstract submission is February 15, 2013. Please send your abstracts to Dr. Subhash Mojumdar ([email protected]), and your registration/membership and/or exhibition reservation form to Dr. Pierre-Claver Nkinamubanzi ([email protected] or fax 613-954-5984).

I look forward to meeting you at the 23rd CTAS Annual Workshop & Exhibition.

In Memory of Professor Bernhard Wunderlich It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Professor Bernhard Wunderlich on the evening of August 16, 2012, in Knoxville, TN. Professor Bernhard Wunderlich, arguably the most influential thermal analyst of all times passed away at age 81.

Professor Wunderlich immigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1954 and received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1957 under the leadership of Prof. Malcolm Dole. He was an instructor at Cornell University until 1963. From 1963 until 1988 he was a Professor of Chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He served as a consultant for the DuPont Company for many years. In 1988, he moved to Knoxville, TN and was appointed a Distinguished Scientist at both the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, until his retirement in 2001.

In his scientific career Professor Wunderlich focused primarily on the thermal analysis of polymers. Among his many accomplishments the most important ones were the creation and characterization of equilibrium crystals (extended chain crystals) of polyethylene, the discovery of the rigid amorphous phase in semi-crystalline polymers, the precise measurement and publication of the heat capacity tables of macromolecules in the ATHAS (The Advanced Thermal Analysis System) databank, and publication of the detailed theory of Modulated Temperature Differential Scanning Calorimetry. He has authored ten books and 575 scientific publications. His students include many renowned scientists, several of whom are well-known thermal analysts.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Johanne Wunderlich; and brother, Frank Wunderlich. He is survived by his wife, Adelheid “Heidi” Wunderlich; son, Brent Wunderlich; daughter, Caryn Wunderlich; brothers, Joachim Wunderlich and Manfred Wunderlich; and two grandchildren.

We will be always proud of the fact that we learnt thermal analysis from Professor Wunderlich.
