After 15 over flights of the Denver Metro area, DenverGIS now has more than 1000 layers of JPEG 2000 imagery from DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Governments). When an attempt to create a 3500 GB mosaic in SDE failed, our team was faced with the need to budget for more storage space. A further complicating factor was the need to replace a soon-to-be retired ArcIMS license. With space and speed being the primary issues, we began evaluating LizardTech’s Express Server.

The Problem…
• Serving Images as SDE Rasters consumed too
many resources: Disk space, HW & licenses.
• The 2010-3” aerial imagery was too large to
load into an SDE Raster Image.
• ArcGIS Server Image Server resolved these
issues for all client apps but ArcIMS.
• We had no choice but to retain SDE for ArcIMS
image service and were unable to include the
latest 2010 imagery. A real problem…

– Two dedicated Windows Servers $40,000 (Estimated)
– Total Costs Avoided $340,792
– Express Server License $8,000 Retail
– ROI - one-time 43:1, recurring 29:1
• Legacy support – ArcIMS worked fine with Express
Server and 2010 imagery was available.
• Speedy imagery delivery with greatly reduced costs.
