Quick Hits: Tuesday’s match against Oral Roberts marks the team’s fourth game in the state of Oklahoma, as TU opened its season in Norman, Oklahoma for the Nike Invitational. TU trails the series 16-57, but the Hurricane have won four straight in the series, including a sweep in 2010 which marks the last meeting between the two squads. The meeting will feature a battle between the Silva sisters in Diana Silva for Tulsa and Bruna Silva for Oral Roberts. Bruna is the Golden Eagles libero, while Diana is a starting outside hitter for TU. Looking at the field in the Northern Colorado Tournament, Tulsa has not faced any of the three other teams in the past 16 years. Tulsa trails the series with Northern Colorado 4-0, but the two teams have not met since the 1987 campaign. Creighton and Tulsa have not faced off since 1995 when both squads were a part of the Missouri Valley Conference. Creighton leads the series 4-1, but Tulsa is 1-0 against MVC teams this season. Tulsa and Ball State have only met once back in 1982 when the Cardinals defeated the Hurricane 2-0. TU defeated one other Mid American Conference (MAC) school this year when the Golden Hurricane swept Western Michigan in its opening season contest. Under Head Coach Steven McRoberts, Tulsa is 9-2 on a neutral court, including a perfect 4-0 this year. Tyler Henderson has hit the 20+ kill mark in three of the seven matches this year, and has hit over .500 in two of them. Last year, she hit over .500 in five contests for the Hurricane. At the Kansas Invitational, Tyler Henderson tallied 49 kills and hit .374 to earn a spot on the all- tournament squad. Jessica Adams earned all-tournament honors at the Kansas Invitational as she had 57 digs and averaged 5.70 digs per set. She also averaged 0.40 service aces per frame. Kellie Culbertson opened her season with three-straight double doubles, including a career high 19 kills and 17 digs against Oklahoma. Culbertson saw her consecutive double-double streak draw to a close against Arkansas, but has tallied double-doubles in nine of the past 14 matches. Jordan Clampitt’s 46 assists against OU is the most she had since her 50 assist performance against Kentucky in the second match of the 2011 campaign, and the most she’s had while TU has used the 6-2 offense. Ashley Hooper hit .395 at the Kansas Invitational with 21 kills during the three-match tournament. 2012 Tulsa Volleyball Contact: AJ Harrison l Phone: 918.960.0127 l Email: [email protected] TulsaHurricane.com l Facebook.com/TulsaVolleyball l Twitter.com/TulsaVolleyball 2012 Record: 4-3, 0-0 C-USA l September 3, 2012 Back-to-Back C-USA Champions l Back-to-Back NCAA Tournament Appearances 2012 Schedule/Results On The Web Tulsa Volleyball At A Glance Media: Live stats for the tournament will be available via Gametracker. @TulsaHurricane @TulsaVolleyball Tulsa Hurricane Tulsa Volleyball LAST GAME’S STARTERS # Pos. Steven McRoberts is in his second year as The University of Tulsa head volleyball coach, as he was appointed to the position on February 10, 2011.

McRoberts has 15 years of head coaching experience, and has com-piled a career record of 425-147, posted 20+ wins 14 times. He has had six seasons with 30+ wins and earned conference coach of the year honors 10 times.

In his first season as head coach of the Golden Hurricane, TU posted a 28-7 record overall and an 18-2 mark in league play as well as win-ning the Conference USA Championship. McRoberts also led the Hur-ricane to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in as many years.

McRoberts coached three players that earned All-America honors and four players that were All-C-USA selections, including Player of the Year Tyler Henderson and Libero of the Year Jessica Adams. He was named the Conference USA and AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.

Prior to his appointment at Tulsa, McRoberts served six years as head coach at the University of Central Arkansas, where he compiled a record of 146-58, and won at least 20 games in five of those seasons. His last two teams won back-to-back Southland Conference regular season titles and posted a 31-1 league mark during that stretch.

In 2010, McRoberts led UCA to a 28-8 overall record and 15-1 South-land Conference mark. A year earlier, McRoberts led the Sugar Bears to a 27-3 overall mark in 2009, breaking the school record for winning percentage for a third straight year, and a perfect 16-0 mark in league play. McRoberts’ efforts in 2010 led to his third consecutive Southland Conference Coach of the Year award.

In 2008, UCA went 12-4 in league play to finish atop the East Di-vision of the Southland Conference and set an overall school record in winning percentage for the second straight season by going 24-7. McRoberts earned his first of three Southland Conference Coach of the Year awards in the 2008 campaign.

The 2007 season saw the Sugar Bears set the school record for win-ning percentage with a 24-9 record. UCA also finished 10-6 in South-land Conference play and placed third in the East Division for the sec-ond straight year. In 2006, UCA’s first year of NCAA Division I play, the Sugar Bears posted a 19-17 mark.

McRoberts became the UCA head coach prior to the 2005 campaign and in his first season led the Sugar Bears to a 24-14 overall record, ending a streak of 10 consecutive losing seasons.

McRoberts’ teams have done well in the classroom as well, as UCA volleyball student-athletes won the UCA Academic Achievement Award for having the highest team grade point average on campus for each of his first three seasons. The Sugar Bears received the AVCA Team Academic Award twice under McRoberts.

Prior to taking over the reins at UCA, McRoberts compiled a 251-82 record for a .754 winning percentage during his eight-year tenure at Lubbock Christian University in Texas. The Lady Chaps reached the post-season and finished in the NAIA Top 20 every season from 1998 to 2003. In 1998, McRoberts guided LCU to a 38-4 record and a fifth-place finish at the national tournament.

At Lubbock Christian, McRoberts won the Sooner Athletic Confer-ence Coach of the Year award six times and NAIA Region VI Coach of the Year three times. The Lady Chaps won seven straight conference titles under McRoberts’ guidance.

McRoberts coached 14 NAIA All-Americans, 28 All-Region players, 42 All-Conference selections, three Southland Conference Freshmen of the Year, one SLC Player of the Year (3 time winner), two SLC Setters of the Year and one SLC Libero of the Year. His teams did equally well in the classroom, producing 10 Academic All-Americans.

In addition to his success with the volleyball program at Lubbock Christian, McRoberts also started and coached both the men’s and women’s golf programs at LCU.

McRoberts received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a mi-nor in social studies and health from Harding (Ark.) University in 1993 and his masters in physical education from Henderson State (Ark.) in 1996.

McRoberts and his wife, Stacy, have two children: son, Jackson, and daughter, Mollie.

Quoting The Coach: On the Kansas Invitational last weekend... “We got to see a lot of players get playing time for different reasons. We had a lot of our players play and some did very well and some not so well. We are still trying to fill out the identity of the team. We are still trying to figure out if we are going to run a 6-2 or a 5-1.”

On being consistent.. “Right now, at times we look really good and at times we look not so good. We have to steady out and become more consistent. That is our big talk right now and steady out and not give up so many runs.”

On Jessica Adams earning C-USA Defensive Player of the Week... “Jessica had another solid week. We have needed her to play well for us to have a chance to win and she has done that. Jess is off to great start her senior year and she is competing at a high level.”

On the middle blockers... “I think it is going to be a revolving door with our middles. I have said that to them and they understand. We have four good middles, and each one of them brings a little different thing.”

2012 Conference USA Standings

Conference USA TournamentAfter a two-year hiatus, the Conference USA Championship will return. Tulsa, the two-time defending regular season C-USA champions, will host the 2012 tournament Nov. 16-18 at the Reynolds Center. For ticket information for the 2012 Conference USA Championship call (918) 631-GoTU.

One of the strengths of the Hurricane this year will be its ball control and passing, provided by the back row defense. Tulsa is led by 2011 Conference USA Libero of the Year Jessica Adams, the Tulsa all-time digs leader. She is joined by fellow senior Shelbi Pitcher and freshman Kelsey Parks on the defensive front. Adams, a native of Oklahoma City and a high school teammate of fellow TU teammate Tyler Henderson, is the Tulsa career leader in digs with 1,757. Additionally, she is the only TU player to record 500 digs in three straight seasons. In 2011, she averaged 4.85 digs per set and 0.23 service aces per set. She also led C-USA in league play with service aces with .92 per set. Pitcher is a three-year letterwinner at Tulsa and has 448 digs during her career. Last year, she played in 10 matches and 27 sets and tallied 41 digs. Parks arrives onto the TU campus after earning three letters at Bentonville High School in Bentonville, Ark. She led her squad in digs last year with 264, while she paced her team with blocks in 2010 with 52.

The Defensive Specialists and Libero

Two-time second team AVCA All-American Tyler Henderson is joined by fellow senior Diana Silva and junior Kellie Culbertson as the returners for the outsidehittersunitthatlostseniorKelseyHancockfromlastyear’ssquad.Joining the outside hitter ranks are freshmen Maura McGivern and Paige Panfil. Henderson, who has also earned Conference USA Player of the Year awards in 2010 and 2011, was fifth in the NCAA in kills per set in 2011 with 4.86. She also ranked 13th in the nation in points per set with 5.11. Henderson, a native of Oklahoma City, is the career leader at TU in kills with 1,857 kills, which ranks seventh in C-USA history. In addition, Henderson set the single season NCAA record for kills in the 25-point scoring era with 710 kills back in 2010. Silva, a 2011 first-team all-Conference USA honoree, is a versatile piece of the Tulsa squad as she tallied 348 kills and 393 digs last year for the Golden Hurricane. Additionally, her 3.17 kills per set and her 3.39 digs per set ranked in the top-15 in the conference. Silva, who hails from Niteroi, Brazil, had 13 double-double performances of kills and digs and had double-digit kills in 29 matches. Culbertson, a native of Long Beach, Calif., garnered second-team all-Conference USA honors a year ago as she averaged 2.64 kills per set, a .220 attack percentage and 3.31 digs per set. Culbertson averaged 0.26 ser-vice aces per set to pace the Hurricane and rank fifth in the conference. Incoming freshmen McGivern and Panfil will compete for playing time this season for the Hurricane. McGivern hails from Wichita, Kan., where she was a four-year letterwin-ner at Hayden High School. She totaled 421 kills, 62 blocks and 77 digs. She was a two-time Class 4A Kansas all-state selection. Panfil, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, was a four-year letterwinner at North Crowley High School. She compiled 1,423 kills and 1,030 digs in her career, playing six rotations in all four years of high school. As a senior in 2011, she totaled 561 kills and 466 digs, and was named the Most Valuable Player of District 4-5A.
