Chairman’s Report from 2011 to 2012
From 2011 we formed a new committee aiming to guide the club into the future, for the hounds, and their owners, to give another aspect of using the hounds to their full ability. We perfected the go to ground so it can be transported to different venues. This seems to be holding out very well, and will continue to make more sections as and when funds become
available. Our funding is purely by owners and dogs turning out to support us. Our next goal is to purchase the Insurance needed to keep the Club going, which is approx. £100. The club is for both pet and show persons; you can be as competitive as you like or just come and enjoy what you and your dog can do, and, in doing so, achieve a more confident dog able to cope with different situations. Many of our club members report back to say
how the dog goes home and sleeps and dreams, and enjoys coming back. Of course, training is the key like all things in life, getting your dog to do it with a positive outlook. Many dogs achieve on their first outing going to ground and tracking a small trail. To try to, teach and explain everything at once would not achieve anything as it is a process
of learning for both dog and owner. And once you have got going on the first dog, everything slots into place. You also learn to read your dog on how and why it has the instincts it does. I hope all of you that have joined have enjoyed our show. Our Club likes to reward owners for their support throughout the year. Many of our venues for tracking will be at Thetford Forest this coming winter as it is the closest for everyone for the surrounding areas. We are sure you will benefit as long as you are prepared to train and enjoy our monthly meetings. There always seems to be a lot of laughter at the meetings where our dogs provide us with lots of enjoyment, and gentle exercise.
I close with the best intentions and am optimistic for the future. Sharron Shone. Chairman
Secretary’s report from 2011 to 2012
Welcome to the 2012 AGM of the UK Dachshund Trials Club.
The Club was started in 2011 by a few likeminded dachshund owners who were interested
in exercising the field skills of their dogs. This time last year the club had 10 members, over
the course of the year we have doubled our number to over 20 members.
Within this membership we have a wide range of experience and during the year we have
held monthly trial meetings for our members to learn, practice and develop; we train our
dogs in tracking and in go-to-ground and we also train ourselves as handlers and trail layers.
In the coming year we will continue to hold these monthly trial meetings where we will, as
always, welcome newcomers as well as practice with those who are more experienced.
In May this year we held the Club’s Annual Show.
I would like to say thank you to Di and Clive Moates for allowing us to again use their
grounds and for providing the food and beverages. And also to Cathy Whitehead, our
visiting judge, for giving her time and knowledge.
We had more entries at this year’s show than we had originally anticipated, 20 in novice
class and 7 in intermediate. The standard in both classes was very good and so
congratulations to all of the following:-
In the Novice Class
Overall Winner: Sue Steward handling Florence
Obedience: Harriet Brown handling Frank
Go to Ground: Eric Henningsen handling Ava
Tracking: Peggy Grant handling Gladys
In the Intermediate Class
Overall Winner: Minna Hagan handling Boo
Obedience: Jackie Halsall handling William
Go to Ground Paul Gladwell handling Tilly
Tracking: Jackie Halsall handling William
Prizes and rosettes were awarded to the winners
The Club has also developed in other areas over this past year. We now have our own club
website where we host photos from trial days, articles and list upcoming trials meetings.
I would like to thank Paul Hempsall for building and maintaining this site.
I hope you have had a chance to visit the website and if you have ideas, articles or photos
that you would like to see included on please contact us, either in person or through the
website itself, we would love to hear from you.
Another development this year is that we have started a newsletter. It will be published
once a year and will include articles and updates on club relevant information.
I would like to thank Minna Hagan our editor, and if you have a report or article that you
would like to see published in the newsletter please do contact her.
Also new this year we have issued annual membership cards. These are valid until April
which is when subscriptions come up for renewal and then you will receive a new card.
The club logo on these cards is rather distinctive and another new addition, you will see this
on the club website and all club letter head.
And so finally I would like to thank all our members for participating in our events and look
forward to working with you and your dogs this coming year.

Editor’s ramblings
The UK Dachshund Trials Club held their second annual show on 5th May 2012 at Di and
Clive Moate’s beautiful grounds. An ample supply of beverages and food were supplied by
Di and Clive for which the club is very grateful
Participation was greater than originally expected, which shows that there is plenty of
interest in the working side of this wonderful and versatile breed. We even had one Cesky
Terrier all the way from Devon taking part.
On the day we had 20 hounds entered to the Novice classes and 7 hounds to Intermediate.
All hounds were tested on tracking, go-to-ground, obedience, temperament and gun-test.
Training was also provided to all participants.
Judges for the day were;
Ms. Cathy Whitehead, Tracking
Mr. Ken Black, Go to Ground
Mrs. Lynn Black, Obedience
Ms. Minna Hagan, Temperament and Gun Test
A number of novice hounds also passed their first hurdle, hence moving onto intermediate
class. This was wonderful to see as it was obvious that all the handlers had put substantial
effort into the training of their hounds.
Overall Novice Champion was Florence handled by Sue Steward and overall Intermediate
Champion was Boo handled by Minna Hagan. The quality of hounds competing was very
good and number of hounds tied in both classes and had to partake in a tie breaker in both
tracking and obedience.
A few chuckles were heard during the obedience tie breaker as the last two remaining
hounds would have quite happily stayed until the next day. Who ever said that hounds
cannot be obedient?
We also held a raffle with wonderful prices, including plants for gardens. All the prizes were
purchased and donated by members of the club. Big thank you to Judy Squires for selling
tickets on the day. In total we raised £55.
Overall I believe that everyone had a wonderful day, whether it was competing or just
mingling with their hounds and enjoying a lovely day with like-minded people.

LAMENT OF A STUD DOG
My job is making puppies
And I get two tries at that,
They pat me and tell me "Good Boy"
And that's the end of that.
It's half my job to give 'em teeth
And top line, fronts and other.
Remember, it's only half my job-
They also have a mother.
It's not my job to carry pups
And make 'em grow or nurse 'em
And feed and clean and make 'em strong
That's for "mother" and a person.
It's not my job to wean 'em
And feed calcium and food.
And stack and gait and housebreak
And make 'em show or brood.
It's not my job to plan the breeding
And learn what produces well.
To study pedigrees, learn what's there,
And pick out what to sell.
It's not my job to guarantee champs.
The breeder picks the pair,
To make and whelp and feed and show
And hope that champ is there.
It's not my job to be on hand
When points are given out.
The breeders. owners, dam and friends
Take credit with a shout.
It's not my job to deliver a winner,
It’s only genes I sell.
But let those puppies turn out bad,
And guess who catches HELL.

Funny stuff
Rudolph is confiding to Dancer "You know, I've been pulling Santa's sleigh for years now and I'm not as young as I used to be. I'm worried that soon Santa might replace me with a younger reindeer." A Dachshund is passing by and overhears the conversation. "You know what you should do" the little Dachshund advises, "This year, on the way out, take it a little bit easy, let the younger guys do more of the work. Then when you guys are heading back home you'll have more energy, pull hard and you'll impress Santa with your stamina." The two reindeer just stand and stare at the Dachshund. "Well, what do you think of my idea?" says the little Dachshund a little puzzled. Dancer turns to Rudolph and says, "Oh my god, it's a talking dog!"
Two guys are out walking their dogs through town and they see that a new restaurant has opened up. The first guy says, "We should try that place out" "I wouldn't mind" his friend replies, "but we have our dogs with us, they won't let us in." "Don't worry" says the first guy, "just follow my lead" He puts on his sunglasses and walks into the restaurant with his dog. “A table for one please" he says. "I'm sorry sir" the maitre d' replies, "we don't allow pets here." "This isn't a pet, it's my guide dog" "But it's a Doberman." "Yes, they've started using Dobermans as guide dogs, they're very intelligent" The maître d' thinks a moment and then says, "Very well sir, please come this way" and seats the guy. Well the second fella sees this and figures, why not. He puts on his sunglasses and walk into the restaurant. "I'm sorry sir" the maître d' again says, "We don't allow pets here." "This isn't a pet" the second guy says, "It’s my guide dog." The maître d' looks down and says "I really don't think so, that is a Dachshund" "What!" wails the guy, "You're saying they gave me Dachshund?"
