In 2012, Technoparc Montréal celebrated its 25th anniversary. The genesis of the science park dates back to March 5, 1987, when the Centre d’initiatives technologiques de Montréal (CITEC) was established by Mr. Cyr of Bell Canada, Mr. Johnston of McGill University, and Mr. Daoust of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal in order to:

• Create a technology coalition comprised of businesses, universities, governments and private organizations; • Coordinate high tech activities aimed at fostering technological breakthroughs and job creation in Metropolitan Montréal; • Collect donations, bequests and other contributions aimed at funding such activities;• Use the funds raised, preferably the interest earned on such sums, to provide necessary aid.

CITEC would become known as Technoparc Saint-Laurent in 1997 and, ultimately, as Technoparc Montréal in 2008. CITEC activities were initially overseen by three sectoral committees responsible for three priority sectors: Life Sciences, ICT and Aerospace. In 1991, this collaborative approach led to the implementation of the Government of Québec’s industry cluster strategy, which pooled key industry players from Metropolitan Montréal. CITEC’s sectoral committees would form the basis of three of the five industry clusters which are still operating today: Montréal In vivo, TechnoMontréal and AéroMontréal. As you can see (and this fact is often forgotten), Technoparc Montréal is the oldest organization in Québec dedicated to promoting the collaboration, development and prospecting of technology companies and players.

We are proud to highlight this anniversary, as it is a testament to Montréal’s ability to create a strong, long-term alliance that supports sustainable solutions and to CITEC’s ability to promote Montréal’s economic diversity, efforts which have enabled this great city to successfully tackle a myriad of challenges and remain economically competitive.

In 2013, our goal is to ensure that Technoparc Montréal remains a key player in growing Montréal’s technology sector by fostering the emergence of world-class science and technology innovation poles and research centres.

On May 18, 2012 : Hubert Reeves, Astrophysicist and President of Humanity & Biodiversity, Alan DeSousa, Mayor of Saint-Laurent, Mario Monette, President and CEO of Technoparc Montréal, Sandra Levy, President of Liberty Sites, and over 100 other distinguished guests attended the official launch of the Éco-campus Hubert Reeves (Hubert Reeves Eco-Campus) at its future location on Alexander-Fleming Street and Alfred-Nobel Boulevard.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Technoparc Montréal’s vision for the Eco-campus centers around three themes:

• Promotion of the natural habitat;• An organized road network;• A design that optimizes views of the city and the natural landscape.

The image on the right depicts the Éco-campus Hubert Reeves’s future public square, which will link pavilions to the adja-cent natural environment. This Eco-Campus will offer access to protected areas through a gangway and a pedestrian network. Approximately 50% of the site will consist of natural green spaces.

The Hubert Reeves Eco-Campus will feature 70,000 m2 of office spaces and workshops in some 12 state-of-the-art buildings meeting strict environmental standards. These four to five storey buildings will welcome one or more companies, depending on the needs of future residents. A research centre and a service centre located in the heart of the Eco-Campus will feature a variety of spaces such as meeting and conference rooms, a test workshop, service businesses, etc.

MASTER PLAN AND KEY COMPONENTSThe Master Plan outlines a carefully conceived, eco-friendly design, where state-of-the-art pavilions harmonize perfectly with the natural surroundings. The Eco-Campus will offer an amazing work environ-ment befitting the green sector. The new plan for the site provides for the restoration and protection of 10 acres of Montréal’s ecosystem. The Master Plan also details the preservation of marshes, wetlands, woods and country fields. The vision behind the plan is to ensure that the natural habitat won’t be disturbed and that the site’s biodiversity and ecosystems will be protected.

The heart of the Eco-Campus will be a public square for future workers and visitors, whose design was strongly influenced by the surrounding buildings. The public square will serve as a welcoming urban meeting place. Activities and service businesses located on the ground floor of the pavilions will overflow on the outdoor space during warmer months of the year.

The configuration of the public square will act as a bridge between the Eco-Campus and the conservation area. Water will also be an integral aspect of the landscape design. Parking spaces accessible from the public square will be integrated in a staggered structure belted on three sides by buildings whose green roofs will minimize the environmental impact of the vehicles on the natural surroundings. A bus stop and a public bike station will be set up on the outskirts of the public square in order to create a safe and pleasant waiting area for public transportation users and to promote alternatives to solo driving. Views of Mount-Royal and of the Saint-Joseph Oratory will further enhance the site while linking it to the city beyond.

As in recent years, high occupancy costs strongly influenced corporate real estate decisions in 2012. Many potential clients chose to remain at their facilities while others chose to purchase a building and repurpose it as business offices. We launched a systematic offensive with brokers and networked with organizations that track physical movements of businesses. We worked on over 40 projects in 2012, and our real estate team followed up with brokers and companies that meet the criteria for taking up residence at Technoparc Montréal’s Saint-Laurent Campus. Of the 15 business files assembled, 10 bids were prepared and presented, resulting in the sale of two lots. Deals are expected to be signed with three other clients in 2013.

INAUGURATION OF THE TECHNOHUB

The TechnoHub digital economy centre, a joint initiative of Développement économique Saint-Laurent, the Borough of Saint-Laurent and Technoparc Montréal, was inaugurated on June 7, 2012. Located at 903 Décarie Boulevard, the TechnoHub pools ICT start-ups which offer various services and complementary IT solutions for Saint-Laurent businesses.

“The digital economic centre offers a workplace environment conducive to the growth of ICT start-ups. It is dedicated to businesses that want to market their projects and provides a platform and networking activities that help accelerate the growth of these new players on the Saint-Laurent market. The TechnoHub is a springboard for start-ups. It helps them until they’re ready to move to the next level and lease other spaces on our territory,” explains Daniel Dicaire, DESTL’s General Manager.

A 1,500 ft2 commercial space located on Décarie Boulevard was renovated to accommo-date these young entrepreneurs over the next three years. The state-of-the-art facilities include five offices, six workstations and a common conference room.

STRATEGICPartnerships

Public TransportationTechnoparc Montréal’s Transportation Committee was very satisfied with the initiatives proposed by the Borough of Saint-Laurent in 2012. Here’s a summary of the improvements made following meetings held with the STM and the Centre de gestion des déplacements de Développement économique Saint-Laurent:

• The new pedestrian walkway on Marie-Curie has made getting around much safer. • In April 2012, four express bus lines were added on the West Island to facilitate access to Technoparc Montréal’s Saint-Laurent Campus.• The STM announced three new departure times for Bus #72, effective in January 2013: two new morning departure times from the Côte-Vertu subway station and one new evening departure time from Technoparc Montréal.• Six public transportation information booths were set up in the atrium and in Place Innovation’s food court to encourage employees to take Bus #72, share taxis or carpool.

In partnership with Les Productions Minos and www.repere.tv, video clips on high tech innovations were shot and broadcast on repere.tv, in a new section presented by Technoparc Montréal entitled “Le coin des chercheurs” (the researchers’ corner). Clean technology experts such as Hubert Reeves were interviewed to discuss their current and future projects. This initiative helped increase the Saint-Laurent Campus’s notoriety as a place for esteemed researchers and attracted an educated audience of decision-makers in the technology field.
