Survey background

Surveys Senior IT decision makers in UK commercial enterprises (more than 1000 employees in UK) 100 interviews per quarterly wave conducted in Q1 (Jan-Mar) and Q2 (Apr-Jun) 2012 Questions: 1. Which of the following technologies are on your organisation's IT agenda for the next 12 months, and in which quarter? 2. Is this a new investment or an extension of what’s already there?

Widest expenditure • Operational IT (security, network, data management) continue to attract

investment from 2/3rds – 4/5ths of enterprises.

• Virtualisation of server, storage and desktop continue apace with more than 3 in 4 enterprises continuing to invest.

Fastest growing technologies • Private Cloud. For two quarters, more than 40% of investments will be

by new adopters.

• Customer mobility, especially mobile payments. For two quarters, over 50% of investments will be by new adopters.

• Flexible working, especially the provision of tablets and mobile apps for workers, where around half to two-thirds of investments will be by new adopters.

• From a lower base, new technologies such as 3D printing and context-aware computing are seeing 60-70% of investments will be by new adopters.

The widespread investment in virtualisation (75%-85%) matches the ubiquity of security and network spending. The difference is that here we see 25-35% first-time adoption

The increasing and growing provision of smartphones and, especially, tablets shows that enterprises are not universally surrendering before the BYO tide. The big increase in mobile apps for employees shows that, be it

BYO fuelled or employer provisioned, mobile continues to gather momentum
