NCAA Division II Heartland Conference

The Heartland Conference is an NCAA Division II conference, founded in 1999, that currently consists of nine schools, six from Texas, and one each from Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The schools comprising the Heart-land Conference stretch from as far north as Wichita, Kan., as far east as Fort Smith, Ark., as far south as Laredo, Texas, and as far west as Goodwell, Oklahoma. The Conference stretches over a distance of 1,050 miles north to south and 610 east to west.

The schools that are in the Heartland Conference include founding members St. Edward’s University (Austin, Texas), and St. Mary’s University (San Anto-nio, Texas), and expansion members Dallas Baptist University (Dallas, Texas) in 2002 and again in 2004, Oklahoma Panhandle State University (Goodwell, Oklahoma) in 2002, and Newman University (Wichita, Kansas), Texas A&M International University (Laredo, Texas) and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (Odessa, Texas) in 2006, and the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (2009).

Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are national cham-pionships in baseball, golf, swimming, basketball, softball, and nationally ranked teams in all sports. The strength of the student-athlete concept is well supported by the many NCAA scholar-athletes in each school, the high cumulative GPA of the student-athletes in each school, and the high number of student-athletes who graduate from each institution in the Heartland.

The Heartland Conference is the newest of the NCAA Division II conferences. At the present time, there are 23 conferences in NCAA Division II, totaling almost 300 institutions in full or provisional status across the nation.

Members of NCAA Division II believe that a well-conducted intercollegiate athletics program, based on sound educational principles and practices, is a proper part of the educational mission of a university or college and that the educational welfare of the participating student-athlete is of primary concern.

SEASON OUTLOOKM e n ’ s S o c c e r

w w w . g o d u s t d e v i l s . c o m

2012 Men’s Soccer PreviewThe Texas A&M International University men’s soccer team finished the 2011 season 12-3-2 and a perfect 8-0 in conference play, capturing their second straight Heartland Conference Championship. The Dustdevils narrowly missed out on qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament, falling one game shy of Midwestern State University. The team returns the majority of its starters for the 2012 campaign with their sights set on a third straight conference title. Four starters, including the Heartland Conference Player of the Year Emmanuel Frias and first team All-Conference midfielder Luís Salas, graduated from last year’s team, but with the addition of nine newcomers to this year’s squad, the Dustdevils have added plenty of depth to an already capable roster.

ScheduleThe Dustdevils will be tested right out of the gate with another tough schedule filled with nationally-ranked teams, including two matches versus Midwestern State University, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and Colorado School of Mines. After playing its first two games of the year at home, TAMIU hits the road for three of the next four matches between August 31 and September 9.

ForwardsThe TAMIU front line will be all about speed. Headlining the returning forwards for the Dustdevils is junior Diego Manzano-Cano. Cano was named the Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Year last season, scoring a team high nine goals with 20 total points. He will be joined by conference freshman of the Year Jovany Macias, ranked third on last year’s team with four goals and four assists. Returning lettermen Damir Turko, Luis Ponte, and Edgar Flores will battle newcomers Cristobal Larrain (Fr. - Santiago, Chile) and Robert Domínguez (Fr. - El Paso, TX) for a starting position.

MidfieldersDespite losing starter and second-team All-Conference selection Guilherme Andrade, the Dustdevils added plenty of depth to the middle of the field providing Coach Arias with a multitude of options for starting lineups. Two-time All-Conference selection Adan Villavicencio will spearhead the TAMIU midfielders after starting all 17 games for the Dustdevils last season. Villavicencio will be joined by second-team All-Conference selection sophomore Arturo Gutíerrez, who finished the 2011 season with seven points, recording three goals on 17 shots with one assist. Theo Brown (Sr. - Saint Johns, Antigua) returns to the pitch for the Dustdevils after a two year break from the sport and will take on Jaime Cano and newcomers Angel Robles (Fr. – El Paso, TX), Walter Onoruo (Jr. – Houston, TX), and Eduardo González (So. – Laredo, TX) for minutes.

DefendersThree starters return from last year’s defense including Joan Vallejo, Yamin Olavarrieta and Elkin Marin-Tovar. The trio of defenders anchored the Dustdevils back line last season holding their opponents to just 13 total goals. Sophomore Oscar Pompa brings a great deal of height into the mix and will take on fresh faces Juan Ramirez (Fr. – Bogota, Columbia), Camilo Botero (Fr. – Bogota, Columbia), and Christian Hesselaa (Fr. – Silkeborg, Denmark) for a starting role.

GoalkeepersPerhaps one of the biggest losses for the Dustdevils was the departure of keeper Emmanuel Frias. Frias was named the 2011 Heartland Conference Player of the Year after allowing 10 goals in 13 games with 5.5 shutouts, 30 saves, and a 0.82 goals against average. Jesús Cisneros will likely step into the starting role after gaining valuable experience last season. Cisneros played in seven games last year, recording 1.5 shutouts, 20 saves, and a 0.55 goals against average. Sophomore Rodrigo Avila (Laredo, TX) does not trail Cisneros by much in skill level and should see significant playing time.

Claudio Arias is entering his third season as Head Coach of the Texas A&M International University women’s soccer team. During his tenure in Laredo, Coach Arias has helped to steadily transform the Dustdevils into a serious contender in the Heart-land Conference.

In their most recent campaign the Dustdevils fin-ished only 2-15-1, but took a huge step forward de-feating conference foe Newman University for the first time in program history. The win also marked the Dustdevils second-ever victory in Heartland Conference play.

Arias took over as head coach of the TAMIU wom-en in 2010, directing a team that had little success in recent years to a four-win season. The Dustdev-ils were also able to trim their scoring deficit from

109-9 in the 2009 season, to 39-20 in Arias’ first season at the helm.

Prior to arriving at TAMIU, Arias served four sea-sons as head coach at Southern Wesleyan Univer-sity (SWU) in South Carolina. He led SWU to the 2003 Georgia-Alabama-Carolinas Conference title, with a 2-1 overtime win over nationally-ranked (#2) Auburn-Montgomery in the semifinals.

Arias played collegiate soccer for Bryan College in Tennessee where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He also holds a master’s in health and exercise science from Furman University.

Arias played professionally for the Shreveport-Boss-ier Lions of the USISL and the Greenville Lions of the PDL as well as for Deportes Concepción in Chile. He holds a Premier National Diploma with the NSCAA and an “A” license with the USSF.
