Thornton Academy2012 English Immersion and
American Culture Summer Semester
In the Heart of New EnglandWe are 15 miles from Portland, Maine and 90 miles from Boston. Accessible by interstate highway or Amtrak train—local station is less than1 mile from campus. Easy access to three major airports—90 minutes to either Boston’s Logan Airport or Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, N.H.; 15 minutes to the International Jetport in Portland, ME.
During your time at our summer program, you will become proficient in English, learn more about American culture and the process of applying to an American college or university. Our three week program will change you in ways that will make you a better candidate for the school of your choice. For 200 years we have been helping students and we will help you.
At Thornton Academy, we value our small and familial residential community, in which young people and adults learn, work, and play closely together. Many dimensions of this experience occur during the academic week, but activities on the weekend serve as an important extension of the time that we share in classrooms and on the playing fields.
Weekend activities help to provide a balance of hard work and recreation. The activities that we engage in improve campus morale and contribute to the kind of community building that we value at Thornton. After all, our students realize that their experience at Thornton is much more than just an important chapter of their education or a stepping-stone toward the college or university of their choice.
Our Program
Natural Beauty of Our StateWe are lucky to be located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and in a state that boasts both beautiful forestland and mountain ranges. Trips and activities are planned to take advantage of our close proximity to all of these. We firmly believe part of your education with us will include an appreciation for the planet we all live on.
The philosophy behind our program is simple and straightforward. We want to provide an atmosphere where you can become a better writer and speaker of English. We want to give you an idea what it is like to study and live at a respected American school, and we want to help you better understand the process of applying to an American college or university. Our three week program includes academic classes in SAT prep, TOEFL prep, writing and rhetoric based on the ideals set forth by the College Board, and language classes with a focus on Math and Science.
In addition, you will have a chance to visit some of the more famous colleges and universities in New England and New York. Trips during the summer will visit Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, Yale, NYU, and Columbia. You will also have the chance to visit many of the cultural centers throughout New England. Trips are planned to museums, art galleries, and theaters in nearby cities and states. At the end of the program, you will have been exposed to more language classes and cultural events than many students see in an entire year.
