The Saint Joseph’s men's soccer team will bid farewell topreseason workouts and summer camps on August 24 when itwelcomes Hartwick to Finnesey Field to open up the 2012 sea-son.

Returning just two seniors, the team will be the youngest inthe Atlantic 10 conference. However, with the return of 18sophomores and juniors combined, the Hawks, under the direc-tion of third-year head coach Don D'Ambra, will look to meshan abundance of young talent with a solid core of experience.

"The overall fitness level and strength of the team hasmade very good improvements, and our staff and players areso excited to get started this season," said D'Ambra. "Ouryounger players have matured both physically and mentally, which should translate to better execution on the field. Ourteam has dramatically improved in its tactical sense of thegame, which makes things much easier when competing."

Leading the Hawks will be a veteran core of tri-captains.Seniors Tim Brennan and Andrew D'Ottavi and junior PatMcGlynn demonstrate the commitment, devotion, and workethic that it will take to lead this young team to victory.

As a 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection, Brennan willserve as a leader on the defensive end. Referred to by D'Ambraas "one of the most consistent players on the field," the three-year starter has played in all 51 games over the course of hispast three seasons at Hawk Hill while starting 48 times. In thepast two seasons, Brennan played a defensive role as an out-side back, and the coaching staff appreciates his dedicated abil-ity to be an all-around player. "He is versatile and may see sometime as a defensive midfielder," said D'Ambra. "He leads byexample and has an excellent work ethic.

Returning the top five scorers from last season, SJU willlook to build on the foundation that these players have creat-ed. Sophomore forward Alex Critzos returns to the team as lastseason's leading goal scorer, having been extremely oppor-tunistic with his chances. His knowledge of the game will havea profound effect on the Hawks offense this season.

“Alex has learned a lot in the past year," says D'Ambra ofhis offensive standout. "We are excited about his potential."

Critzos and sophomore midfielder Jake Nelson combinedfor 16 points last season, contributing eight points apiece.Nelson netted three goals and tallied two assists in his fresh-man campaign as a Hawk, and he started in all 17 games.

According to D'Ambra, Nelson and sophomore forwardMike Glazer were "solid players for the team last year whohave made very good improvements in the off season." Glazerstarted 16 of his 17 total games played last season and led theteam with 26 shot attempts.

"We expect good things from them," D'Ambra adds of hishard-working trio of sophomores as the Hawks will look to con-tinue progress on the offensive side of the ball.

Rounding out the offense will be junior forward RyanMcFadden, who played in 14 games last season and had anassist in an SJU win over Army.

Third-year starter McGlynn will lead the charge at midfield.McGlynn has proved himself an asset to the team, recordingthree points, one goal, and one assist in each of his first twoseasons at Saint Joseph's while starting all 34 games.

Paired with the seniors, D'Ambra credits McGlynn for hisconsistency in both a devoted work ethic and solid leadershipqualities, stating, "Pat is a starting midfielder who has shown toprovide good energy and is very active on the field."

Junior Jimmy Reilly is also back from last year's squad hav-ing shown an undeniable competitive edge in 16 games.Sophomores Michael Rumel and Edward D’Amelio and fresh-men Tim Lazorko, Adam Wissner, and Luke Rosescu will com-pete for minutes in the midfield to help round out a potential-ly dangerous and efficient offense.

.In reference to his freshmen midfielders, Coach D'Ambrastates, "Timmy is a well-rounded player who can defend andattack. Adam has a good sense of the game, works hard, andwill be solid defensively, and Luke is a crafty and skillful playmaker that will bring creativity to our team."

Although veterans return to the Hawk attack with an abun-dance of talent and experience, D'Ambra spent the offseasonaddressing the needs on the offensive end by focusing onreplenishment through the addition of more offensive depth.Ryan Kelly is a transfer forward from Marshall University thatbrings intensity and urgency to make plays on the field.

"Ryan played with us in the spring and did a nice job of cre-ating scoring chances in the offensive third," said D'Ambra.

Freshmen forwards Emmanuel Temeh and Mike Serbanadd speed and raw talent to an offense that began to see anincrease in production last year. D'Ambra appreciates that thequick and athletic Temeh is "eager to learn and is excited to bea part of the program" and acknowledges his potential andgood sense around the goal. Serban's strength, athleticism, andstrong desire to score goals will stand out during his freshmancampaign.

Joining Brennan on the defensive end will be juniorBrendan Reilly, whose hard-nosed style of play proved to be anintegral part of last season. A defensive starter yet offensivethreat, the 2011 Soccer Six Player of the Week selection wasresponsible for burying the game-winning goal in an overtimevictory at St. Bonaventure, locking up the Hawk's second victo-ry of 2011.

Sophomore Tommy Brooks returns as a starter on defensehaving shown a real sense of grit and relentless work ethicthroughout the progression of his freshman season. Brooksearned his way to become a starting player for the team as hewent through a transition from a defensive midfielder in the fallto a central defensive role this past spring.

"Tommy is versatile tactically so we look to plan to use himin a couple different positions," added D'Ambra of his sopho-more defender.

A second sophomore trio of Dylan Andrews, Josh Edgar, and Brandon Stevis will help bolster the defense. These Hawkdefenders have made large improvements working on theirgame from just a season ago and will contribute on the defen-sive back line

"Dylan, Josh, and Brandan have made steady improve-ments in the off-season," D'Ambra explained, "and I expectthese players to compete for starting positions or more signifi-cant playing time."

Also in the mix for the defense is Jake Mulinge, a transferdefender from FDU whose athleticism and speed will allow himto compete for significant playing time as well as bring addi-tional experience to the team. A trio of junior veterans in third-year players Colin Reilly, Brian Reynolds, and ConnorWiderman will round out the defense.

"Defensively, we have a very intelligent back line," praisedD'Ambra, "and hopefully they can establish a cohesiveness withone another."

At the reigns of the defense in goal this season will be noneother than the team's 2011 Most Outstanding Player: D'Ottavi. The veteran returns for his third season in the net for theHawks. D'Ottavi made a mark in Atlantic 10 standings last sea-son as he ranked second in the conference in saves (95) andthird in saves per game (6.33) while his contribution to a teamtotal 113 saves helped to rank SJU third in the A10 in the cate-gory of total saves. The senior goalkeeper will be a key part tothe team's success, and D'Ambra believes that his senior's ded-icated mentality will pave the way for this young Hawk squad.

"It's Andrew's positive attitude and strong work ethic thatmake him a captain. His steady play has made an impact on sev-eral games for us," said D'Ambra.

Juniors Michael Moulton and Sam Pozzessere will back upD'Ottavi in goal this season. Moulton made three starts in 2011while posting a 3.60 goals against average to go with 16 saveson the year.

After a tough season in 2011, Coach D'Ambra will look forcontributions from everyone, from his enthusiastic, willing-to-learn freshmen to his experienced, knowledgable veteran sen-iors along with the core group of talented juniors and sopho-mores in between. From the coaching staff to the players, theHawks look forward to the opportunities that will presentthemselves along the way of another Saint Joseph's men's soc-cer season.

"We are very excited with our players' potential and look tosee good things from them this upcoming season," saidD'Ambra.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 57

years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flap-

ping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s

yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed,

with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fight-

ing spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team

famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s

top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN

College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

FINNESEY FIELD

Finnesey Field has been home to 10different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’sUniversity as it enters its 84th year.Opened in 1929 as home to the SJUfootball squad, the field has undergonenumerous changes over the years andhas been home to over a thousand SJUvarsity games, matches and track meets.

The most recent upgrade happenedin the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced withnew, state-of-the-art TigerTurf.Additionally, the track received a newcoat of rubber material in 2009 to bettersuit the athletes who use it for all sea-sons.

Home to the men’s and women’ssoccer teams, men’s and women’slacrosse teams, the field has seen othermodifications done to it since its incep-tion in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football wasdashed when the sport was discontin-ued following the 1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey homeuntil 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillsideseating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (nowPost) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its cur-rent location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a trulymulti-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered theuse of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-um.

Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer started in 1958 and played everyseason but one (1960) at Finnesey. The squad has compiled an over-all 164-184-31 mark in 53 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories ofany program on Finnesey Field. SJU opened its playing grounds witha 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958.

The location has also been home to women’s soccer since 1996and the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Finnesey in2007.

Overall, the site has seen 1,182 games entering the 2012-13 aca-demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 534-598-50in 83 years.

2011 YEAR IN REVIEW

After a tough 2010 campaign in his first season, SaintJoseph’s men’s soccer coach Don D’Ambra accepted that 2011was going to be a rebuilding year for his group. With more than adozen freshmen and sophomores playing regularly, the Hawksfinished 2-15-0 and 1-8-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

Senior and two-time captain Tom Smart led the Hawks withhis gritty play in the midfield in all 17 starts, while junior AndrewD’Ottavi started 13 games in net and posted two shutouts.

Two pleasant surprises came by way of freshmen AlexCritzos and Jake Nelson. Critzos saw action in 16 games as hestarted 13 of them. Taking advantage of his opportunity, he ledthe club with four goals and tied for the team lead in points witheight. Nelson went on to become a mainstay in the midfield as hestarted all 17 games. His three goals and two assists marked hima threat to opposing teams.

Sophomore Brendan Reilly and freshman Tommy Brooksalso made an impact for the Hawks throughout the season. Theiraggressive play tabbed them as fierce defenders while they alsocontributed on the offensive end. Reilly netted two goals on theseason and Brooks chipped in adding two assists.

The team began the season in Philadelphia as it dropped twogames, one to Detroit on Finnesey Field and the other at city rivalPenn.

Saint Joseph’s snapped its early two-game losing skid when ittraveled up to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army. Goals by TylerLevengood, Critzos and shutout goalkeeping from D’Ottaviallowed the Hawks to grab their first win, 2-0.

SJU then entered a tough stretch of five games where it lostfour by a single goal before beginning conference play.

After a loss at George Washington to kick off A-10 play, themen stayed on the road to face Richmond two days later. TheHawks would jump out to an early two-goal lead as Critzos and fel-low freshman Nelson got Saint Joseph’s on the board. The Spiderscame back with two of their own in the second, sending play intoextra time where they ended a 35-minute scoring drought withthe game winner off of a rebound.

The team returned home after the heart-breaking loss to starta three-game home stand where it fell to Temple, Dayton andXavier.

The Hawks regrouped and made the trip up to St.Bonaventure to take on the Bonnies. After 90 minutes of scorelessplay by both clubs, action carried over into extra time. Five min-utes into overtime, Reilly struck a free kick from 30 yards outthrough a wall that found the inside of the left post to give SJU itssecond win of the year, 1-0. For his efforts, Reilly earned theSoccer Six Player of the Week award.

Saint Joseph’s would go on to close out the season with threelosses, including a senior day where all four seniors – Nico Galati,Jake McPaul, Greg Rom and Tom Smart - were individually hon-ored.

Despite the number of one-goal losses, the young Hawksgained valuable experience through a great deal of action on thefield. D’Ambra expects that the growth and development of thisyear’s bunch will lead to a confident, more competitive club in2012 and a run at an A-10 Tournament berth.
