Section A: Editing (10 marks)

A couple friends and I have been exchanging emails over the past few days about 1. volunteer and its ability to solve social problems.

The conversation began when one of my friends sent out an email asking if we had seen the excerpt from a book called “The Soul of a Citizen: Volunteering Canʼt Solve Our Problems.” After reading the article, I was a little bitter because the author had a 2. limiting view of volunteers. He said that volunteers cannot solve problems 3.or I disagree. It is our business to solve community problems.

My friends and I think that volunteers already have a place at the heart of 4.society change. Many non-profit 5. venturing started out as all-volunteer operations – imagining and 6.implement solutions to problems large and small, global and local. These volunteers knew they could make a 7.different on issues like poverty, discrimination, hunger, human rights, and other social problems.

However, if the author wanted to get volunteers to be more 8. activity in change, we could use these ideas : First, volunteers need to be better advocates, which is, to share with others our visions and goals for a better world. Many people must hear what our heart is, and not leave it to volunteers to do the work themselves.Second, volunteers need to get better at telling our story so that the public doesnʼt simply see us as 9. feed the hungry and cloth the poor but also working on all levels to create 10. last social change.
