Stock of the YearEach year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses
and bulls – the animal athletes with whom they contend in the arena and whose performance is worth half their own scores. Ballots go out every Sept. 1, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet each year just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering the animals’ growth and development until they are ready to be tested in the arena for the bucking instinct and physical abilities that may make them champions in their own right.
In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. Pendleton Whisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler NFR.
The 2011 Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards went to:
Bareback Horses1. Full Baggage, Frontier Rodeo2. Brother, JK Rodeo3. (tie) Black Cat, Beutler & Son Rodeo, and Big Tex, Classic Pro Rodeo
Saddle Broncs1. Medicine Woman, Frontier Rodeo2. Spring Planting, Flying 5 Rodeo3. Get Smart, Harvey Northcott Rodeo
Bulls1. Palm Springs, 4L and Diamond S Rodeo2. Big Iron, 4L and Diamond S Rodeo3. King of Hearts, Corey & Lange Rodeo
Best bareback horse 2011
Full Baggage Frontier Rodeo
Full Baggage has a penchant for the number 89. In April 2011, Kaycee Feild rode him for 89 points in Corpus Christi, Texas, and in July, Casey Colletti teamed up with him for the same score. In December 2011 at the Wrangler NFR, just three days after Fron-tier Rodeo picked up the bareback horse’s Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Award, Steven Dent, right, rode him for a score of 89.5 in Round 3, good enough for second place.

Stock of the Year
Medicine Woman Frontier Rodeo
Frontier Rodeo is the first stock contractor to win both bucking horse awards in the same year, and Medicine Woman wasn’t done winning until the very last round of the 2011 Wrangler NFR, where Wade Sundell, left, rode her for 86.5 points and second place in the round, which was a big factor in Sundell’s third-place finish in the average. Earlier in 2011, Bradley Harter, Cody DeMoss and Ty Atchison saw their fortunes improved by rides on Medicine Woman, making her a popular draw for saddle bronc riders.
Palm Springs4L and Diamond S Rodeo
During the 2011 season, only two riders managed to stay aboard 4L and Diamond S Rodeo’s spotted white bull before the Wrangler NFR – three-time world champion J.W. Harris in Pueblo, Colo., and Ardie Maier at San Antonio – and Palm Springs continued his winning ways at the NFR, bucking off seven-time NFR qualifier Bobby Welsh in Round 5 and 2011 Justin Boots Championships winner Jacob O’Mara in Round 8. Steve Woolsey, right, fared better on Palm Springs at the 2010 NFR, where he scored an 87.5 for third place in the last round. Palm Springs edged out another 4L bull, Big Iron, who came in second for the second consecutive year.

Remuda AwardsThe PRCA’s annual Remuda Awards go to the stock contractor and rodeo committee who provide
the best, most consistent pen of bucking horses, creating the best opportunities for contestants to score well. In 2011, the Remuda Award for stock contracting went to Bar T Rodeo, founded by ProRodeo Hall of Famer Swanny Kerby more than 50 years ago. His son Bud ran the business in central Utah for decades until he passed away in 2010; his wife, Evelyn, sold it to family members but continues to advise the firm. The 2011 Remuda Award for the committee that assembled the best pens of bucking horses went to the American Royal in Kansas City, Kan.2004 Stace Smith (stock contractor)2005 Stace Smith (stock contractor)

Cody Flitton, left, son-in-law of the late Bud Kerby, and Bud’s wife Evelyn accepted the 2011 Remuda Award for best bucking stock brought to PRCA rodeos at the Nov. 30 PRCA Awards Banquet. The extended Kerby family got more good news 11 days later: Bar T Rodeo’s horse Fancy Pants was named top saddle bronc of the 2011 Wrangler NFR.
The American Royal rodeo in Kansas City earned the 2011 Remuda Award for bringing the deepest field of top buck-ing horses to that rodeo. The 2011 American Royal pen included standouts from Classic Pro Rodeo, Frontier Rodeo, Korkow Rodeos, Robinson Pro Rodeo, Smith, Harper & Morgan Rodeo and Wild Card Rodeo.

2011 AQHA/PRCA Horses of the YearTimed-event contestants will tell you that they are only as good as their horses enable them to be.
Horses that collected the American Quarter Horse of the Year Award in 2011 performed consistently all year and put their riders in position to win – literally. Two were repeat winners: steer wrestling horse Wick and tie-down roping horse Sweetness, who both won for the second consecutive time.
The 2011 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year Awards went to:

A workhorse named Wick dominated the steer wrestling ranks in 2010-11, carrying two of his three primary riders – Seth Brockman and co-owner Billy Bugenig – to the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. His other co-owner, Wade Sumpter, describes Wick as Ol’ Reliable. “Wick puts on a hard hat and goes to work every day,” Sumpter said. “He’s the same horse every time you back into the box, the same horse in any score from Cheyenne (Wyo.) to the Thomas & Mack Center” (home of the Wrangler NFR).

Classic “knows the drill – he’s 17, not a young whippersnapper,” said three-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Keven Daniel. “He fits every situation. He’s fun and easy to rope on. A lot of horses will try to get quick in a short arena, but Classic won’t take the rope away from you.”
At 14 hands, Dugout is just a little guy – an advantage for a heeling horse, said owner and rider Brady Minor. “His head’s never in the way and you can see every-thing.” But at home, Dugout has “little man syn-drome” – he doesn’t like dogs or small children, and when he’s pastured with other horses, “he tries to act big.”
“If this horse could talk, he’d sound just like Walter Payton, the original Sweetness,” said co-owner and four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Clint Cooper of the 17-year-old gelding. “He knows he’s the king of the ranch. (And) Sweetness is, hands down, the fastest horse leaving the box and catching the calf.”

Pokey is, in fact, a bit poky, said owner Cody Lee. “When we’re just riding, he’s always 30 yards behind everyone else.” He’s no Dodge Charger in the arena, either, but he does aim to please. The former ranch horse “learned his new job in 30 days and got really good in 90 days,” Lee said. “He’s not the best at any one thing, but he’s real solid. Anybody can place on him.”

Stingray’s first trip to the Wrangler NFR was in 2009, when she was 7. The next year, she carried co-owner Sherry Cervi to her third world championship and an NFR arena record, and at the 2011 NFR, Cervi and Stingray won Round 6 and finished fourth in the average. Cervi said Stingray is getting more consistent as she matures. “She’s level-headed, she knows her job and she really likes to run barrels,” Cervi said.
Defending world champion Brittany Pozzi and Duke shared the Round 1 win and placed in six other rounds at the 2011 Wrangler NFR. Like Tom Cruise in the movie “Jerry Maguire,” Duke has a lady friend who completes him. Duke “is totally hyper and gets riled up whenever I ride him,” said owner and two-time world champion Brittany Pozzi. Her smaller Palomino, Cosmo, is much calmer, so the three of them usually ride together. “I keep Duke calm by ponying him with her. The more I ride Cosmo, the better she does, where the more I stay off Duke, the better he does.”

Justin Boots, in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of hours of work that rodeo committee members around the country donate to putting on their local rodeos, has long made a practice of honoring 100 outstanding volunteers around the country through its John Justin Standard of the West program. PRCA rodeos vote on one of those 100 as the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of thousands of volunteers. In 2011, that award went to Julie Graber, president of the Kansas’ Largest Night Rodeo committee in Pretty Prairie, which draws about 300 contestants and 18,000 spectators. Her father was also involved, so Graber grew up immersed in the volunteer spirit that enables the 600-person town to mobilize for the event. Graber has also served as Prairie Circuit contact for the PRCA’s circuit system.
Previous winners of the John Justin Committee-person of the Year Award include:

The PRCA announced in May 2011 that it was creating a new award to honor contract personnel (such as announcers, bullfighters, clowns, specialty acts, secretaries and timers) who have been PRCA members for at least 15 years and who have committed their lives to the rodeo industry, yet received little recognition for their commitment and contributions. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among those five.
The recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes, mother of stock contractor brothers John and Marty Barnes and their sister Mitzi, mother-in-law of timers Cindy Barnes and Kendall Barnes and mentor to uncountable thousands of contestants and other people involved with the dozens of Barnes rodeos. Her husband described her role this way: “I had her for 53 years, and she was the glue that held it all together.” Donita Barnes drove livestock trailers, gathered and sorted livestock, kept the books for many rodeos and handled payout. She was widely known for being prepared for any contingency, and for remaining positive under any circumstances. PRCA Chief Operating Officer Kay Bleakly, who knew the Barnes family for more than four decades, said, “She was a delight to be around … and I’ve never been around anybody that worked as hard for the number of hours she did. She was an amazing woman. She could do anything.”
Members of the Barnes family accepted the award at the PRCA’s December 2011 Awards Banquet on behalf of their matriarch, who had passed away in August of that year.
Justin Brands President Jamie Morgan presented the 2011 Justin Boots Committeeperson of the Year Award to Julie Graber, president of the Pretty Prairie (Kan.) Rodeo, in the Thomas & Mack Center arena during the seventh perfor-mance of the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Donita Barnes, long-time PRCA secretary and timer and wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor Bob Barnes, received the PRCA’s inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously.

Linderman AwardWhen Kyle Whitaker first started in ProRodeo, he wasn’t sure if he’d “ever be
good enough” to win a Linderman Award. He grew up watching his dad, Chip, do it four times, so he knew well the level of skill and dedication required to be proficient in three events spanning both ends of the arena. He knew about the travel, the three entry fees per rodeo and the time away from family.
Not even winning a record six of his own has altered his sense of wonder about the Linderman Award. Whoever wins it could be considered the greatest all-around hand in ProRodeo, the cowboy who emphasizes versatility in a highly specialized age of the sport – who has a deeper connection to its roots and origins.
“It means more to me than a lot of guys,” Whitaker said. “When I was a kid, everywhere my dad competed, they introduced him as the Linderman Award winner. From a young age, I’ve known the history of it. The award was always something I had in mind that I wanted to win.
“It seems like there aren’t a lot of people who have a real awareness of what it means. It is my goal every year to qualify for it and win it. I’ve done it (qualified) every year since 1997, so that’s 15 rodeo seasons. I take real pride in that.”
In winning his sixth Linderman Award in 2011 – his first in five years – Whitaker had total earnings of $34,571 in steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding and tie-down roping.
The award guidelines require that a cowboy earn at least $1,000 in each of three events; those events must include at least one roughstock and one timed event to qualify for the award. Whitaker, of Chambers, Neb., had more than $4,500 in all three of his events, with steer wrestling ($22,912) providing the biggest boost to his standing.
“Ten years ago, saddle bronc riding was more my main event,” Whitaker said, “but now I kind of limit the bronc riding to my (Great Lakes) circuit rodeos. I took a little different approach this season. I had kind of a bad winter season, so I decided to go mostly to circuit rodeos and stay closer to home to get ready for the baby (he and his wife, Halie, had their third daughter, Whitney, on Sept. 29).
“July and August were pretty good to me. I had a good rodeo at Dodge City (Kan., where he finished second in the steer wrestling average), which made me wonder if I should have gone to a few more big rodeos. But when you are working three events, you can still make pretty good money at circuit rodeos without all the expense of traveling (great distances). Now that I’ve got three daughters … that’s a big responsibility.”
The hallmark of Whitaker’s career has been consistency. From 2002-11, his earnings have ranged from $34,571 to $47,527. He has career earnings of $546,681, with more than $100,000 in each of his three events.
The Linderman Award is named for Bill Linderman, a world champion in timed and roughstock events who died in a 1965 plane crash in Salt Lake City. The first Linderman Award was presented in 1966.
– Jim Bainbridge

Rookies of the YearA PRCA rookie is a cowboy competing in his first year as a full member of the organization. (Cowboys
first join under the PRCA’s permit system, which allows them to compete for some time without becoming full-fledged members. Once a cowboy has “filled his permit” by winning $1,000 at PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, he can apply to become a full member; he is considered a rookie for the remainder of that season.) The PRCA’s Resistol Rookies of the Year are the first-season cowboys who earn the most money in their events during that season.
The Resistol All-Around Rookie of the Year is the rookie who earned the most money among all rookies who won at least $3,000 in each of two or more events. From 1956 through 2010, the PRCA also gave an Overall Rookie of the Year Award to the rookie who earned the most money in any one or more events, but 2010’s overall award was the last.
Also of note: Starting with the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, money earned at the Wrangler NFR counts in the rookie standings. However, the only rookie who competed at the 2011 Wrangler NFR was Chandler Bownds, so the new rule did not affect that year’s winners.
PRCA rookie standings and the 2011 Rookie of the Year Awards are sponsored by Resistol Hats.
