2012 Men of Oklahoma

The Men of Oklahoma calendar started in 2004 as a fundraiser for the fight against breast cancer. The idea blossomed from the minds of two sisters, Cris Shutt and Linda Crooks, and Linda’s husband, Steve, who were inspired by the courage of their close friend, Sheryl Auringer in her fight against breast cancer.

Each year, corporate sponsorship is raised to cover all the production costs of the calendar. One hundred percent of calendar sales benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Having raised nearly $145,000 to support breast cancer research and treatment since its inception, the Men of Oklahoma calendar project is now the second largest fundraiser for the Central Oklahoma Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

On top of the calendar, The Men of Oklahoma host a Kick-Off Party every year to raise funds to help fight breast cancer. The Kick-Off Party is a huge success and is truly humbling to see so many people join together for such a great cause.

Sadly, Sheryl lost her battle in January of 2009, at 52 years old. The 2012

Men of Oklahoma calendar is, once again, dedicated to the memory of

her spirit, courage and the love she gave to everyone whose lives she

touched. Sheryl was diagnosed in March 2004 and she always kept

a positive outlook, even as her disease progressed. The fact that she

never missed a day of work unless she was in treatment, exemplifies her

strength and bravery. Sheryl was this project’s biggest supporter, going

to women’s groups to share her story and to sell calendars! She was an

inspiration to her family and friends, many of whom have been featured in

the calendars over the years.

This project blessed Sheryl’s life and will continue as her legacy.

nts Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister,

Susan G. Komen, she would do everything

in her power to end breast cancer forever. In

1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen

for the Cure and launched the global breast

cancer movement. The Central and Western

Oklahoma Affiliate of Komen for the Cure is

working to better the lives of those facing

breast cancer in the local community. They join

more than a million breast cancer survivors and

activists around the globe as part of the world’s

largest and most progressive grassroots

network fighting breast cancer.

Through events like the Komen Oklahoma City

Race for the Cure(r), the Central and Western

Oklahoma Affiliate has invested over $9 million

in community breast health programs in its 47

county service area. Up to 75 percent of net

proceeds generated by the Affiliate stays in

Central and Western Oklahoma. The remaining

income goes to the national Susan G. Komen

for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.

I t is t ru ly breath tak ing that so many Amer icans can come together and show the i r passion on th is war wi th cancer. Jus t maybe - we are se t t ing the s tage for the younger genera t ion to f igh t , s tudy, and to research and f ind a cure for a l l the hor r ib le cancers that are k i l l ing Amer icans everyday. When I to ld Cole about the calendar he was so exc i ted. He was exc i ted to be able to p lay a smal l par t in a greater cause. He was a lso exc i ted about the oppor tuni ty to be on a calendar ! How do you want to be remembered?

Getting regular screening tests is the best way for women to lower their risk of dying from breast cancer. Last year, Komen provided funding for approximately 198,000 clinical breast exams and 263,000 mammograms.
