The Four Areas of Focus The Four Areas of Focus express the vision and yearnings of the people of The United Methodist Church. Over this quadrennium, the church will seek to focus the work of making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world around these areas of ministry:
• Combating the diseases of poverty by improving health globally.
• Engaging in ministry with the poor.
• Creating new places for new people and revitalizing existing congregations.
• Developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world.
The Braden Steeple
The marvels of Spring; how manifold they were. In
wisdom how thou has made them all, the earth is full
of the richest. Psalms 104:24.
The earth sought, and was granted a reprieve from the
grip of winters’ bondage. God, the creator of the sea-
son has instituted this phenomenon, allowing the
warming rays to loosen the bonds of the arctic strong-
hold. The earth is full of riches and beauty. The crea-
tures are satisfied.
Joy in God is never out of season.
Welcome Spring – March 20th
Christians experience God through the events of histo-
ry that God has made known to us. This makes time
very important to the Christian faith. It’s because of
this that the cycle of the Christian year is what
grounds our relationship with God; we look forward
to the Lenten Season; look for the colors of purple.
During the Lenten season we are focused on the
ministry of Jesus Christ.
In this issue we would like to introduce important
days leading up to Easter.

My Beloved Parishioners, There is so much to be said about Lent, and
its meaning and significance in the life of faith. The three traditional practices to be taken up with in-creased devotion during Lent are prayer, fasting, and sharing with others. Many people give up a vice of theirs, add something that will bring them closer to God, and often give the time or money spent doing that to charitable purposes and ministries.
I love the season of Lent. The possibility of
growing closer to God; I love the reminder of how
great the love of Christ is; I love the coming of
spring; and I love the coming of Easter. I find this
season to be full of God’s love.
The forty days of Lent, commencing with Ash Wednesday (Feb. 22) ends on the Saturday be-fore Easter is a sacred season of penitence, personal piety and spiritual renewal through sacrificial ser-vice. We have selected as our 2012 Lenten theme: “A Journey of Hope.” During this season of reflec-tion, renewal and, recommitment to the cause of Christ each member is urged to give sacrificially of their God given time, talent and treasury. Won’t you prayerfully begin your Lenten walk of faith now with a renewal of your commitment in worship, study, service and sacrificial financial support of the ongoing ministries of the church?
It’s a time when the whole congregation is reminded of the mercy and forgiveness offered to us in Christ and the need we all have to renew our faith. It’s a season that feels like a fresh start. Some of it feels new and fresh because of the coming of Spring. But even more encouraging is the reminder that I always have a new start in Jesus. I can never wander so far off on my own that Jesus will give up on me. Anyone who is willing to do what He did for me, will never quit offering grace and forgiveness for my shortcomings. It’s a great time of year, when I am reminded daily of how great His love is for me. And the season ends with the great celebration of Easter. Won’t you set aside at least fifteen minutes a day as a quiet time with Christ and make your per-sonal quiet time with Him the first priority of your
day? Here’s how to get started. Be sure to prepare the night before selecting a time to fit your schedule and set the alarm a little bit earlier than usual. Set aside a special sacred space in your house to keep your daily devotional appointment with Him! You will delightfully discover that regular daily devotions and private worship will enhance your mid-week and Sunday worship experience. Additional worship opportunities have been sched-uled to inspire your forty day walk of faith.
I want to encourage all of you not to wait until Easter comes to experience the love. The pow-er of Easter morning is so much more meaningful, when you reflect on all that Jesus had to go through to get to Easter. It is the ultimate gift of love, given for you and me. Come to church, come to Bible study during this time and then come celebrate on Easter morning!
Finally, I have been personally blessed with
the open and honest conversations we had with the leadership team of the church at the Leadership Training. I want you to know that your opinion mat-ters. However, I can’t read your mind. If there is something going on that you want more infor-mation about, or if you wonder why it happened that way, please come and ask me. If there is something that you think should be done differently, come talk to me about it, even if I can’t change it, we can un-derstand and be respectful of each other’s opinions. I really am open to talking; I will always try to make the right decision for the church as a whole, but I want to be informed of everyone’s feelings. If I don’t hear feedback on things that are happening around here, then I assume everyone is happy. I would much prefer an honest conversation with you than someone else coming to me and saying “I’ve heard a few people talking…” I enjoy talking with people, I like getting to know people better, and I love talking about the ministry of Braden. Have a blessed Lenten Season.

Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week
Ash Wednesday: Marks the beginning of Lenten sea-
son. It is a service of public penance. Worshippers
are called forward to the alter rail, and the minister
applies the ashes with his or her thumb to form the
sign of the cross on the forehead of each worshipper.
This is a public declaraon of the need for repent-
ance.
Lent: The 40 days of Lent do not include Sundays,
since all Sundays are considered to be small Easters
in celebraon of Resurrecon. Many people give up
something for Lent as a reminder of the season.
Others take on new spiritual disciplines such as pray-
ers of repentance, spiritual journaling, and extra ser-
vice to others.
Holy Week – The Three Great Days:
Holy Thursday - Communion is a large part of Holy
Thursday Service.
Good Friday - The term Good Friday comes from the
English church. In Old English, “Good” meant “Holy,”
so the tle Good Friday means “Holy Friday”.
Holy Saturday - Holy Saturday is o/en viewed as the
last Sabbath for the disciples as Jews. It is with the
resurrecon of Jesus that the disciples became Chris-
ans celebrang the Resurrecon on Sunday.
“The Great Three Days from sunset - Holy Thursday
to sunset Easter Day are a unity climax of the Chris-
an year.”(The United Methodist Book of Worship)

The Board of Trustees is excited to do God’s work, and we hope the church will work with us to continue to build God’s Kingdom here on earth. The trustees have volunteered to donate time from their busy schedules to participate in one of the ministry opportunities here at Braden Church.
I read that “God Himself sees and rewards those who diligently work for Him with little or no re-gard for earthly recognition”... we are here as a service to God, the congregation and our com-munity.
We look forward to working with the congrega-tion and the community to serve the Lord in building His kingdom here on earth.

Report of Poverty Initiative:
Caring and Sharing Mission
Our team gathered in February to prayerfully plan our agenda for the year. As reported in the December council meeting we have begun relationships with several organizations we would like to partner with this year.
Yvonne Mitcham has provided leadership with agencies that are providing Community Gardens throughout the City of Toledo to grow food to feed the hungry. The gardens will be in various neighborhoods. The gardening project will be a joint effort with the youth at Braden. This takes the seed and nurtures it into a plant to be produced for the plate, the process starts this spring.
Lois Mathis has enthusiastically embraced the residents at the YWCA. The women in the 65 permanent apartments are being provided with clothing, cleaning supplies, household items and commodities through her efforts. She has developed the personal relationships between the residents and Braden United Methodist Church. In fact, Lois has been nominated by the residents at the YWCA to receive “The Jefferson Award” for her volunteerism efforts.
In Lois’ efforts to continue her supporting the community and minister efforts she has been added to the list of drivers for the Braden Van. She will be able to serve the Senior Missions, Unit-ed Methodist Women and also the Poverty Initiative program by providing transportation of these groups.
We also met with the residents at the YWCA in February and discussed with the leadership how we can best support and en-courage the women there. There were 14 residents in attendance and Braden had 4 representatives as participants:
• Randall Jones
• Lois Mathis
• Carol Westmoreland
• Gloria Layson
• Gloria continues with Reading for Literacy at an East Side Fami-ly Center and is preparing to bring this project to the Braden Learning Center when it opens. She continues to offer volunteer services to assist with projects at the Friendly Center. Gloria attended the Leadership Workshop Development provided by the Maumee Watershed District (MWD), “Working beside the Poor”. This mission is to encourage churches to reach out to the Least, the Last, and the Lost which also ties into our Poverty Initiatives.
Linda Hester is linking the United Methodist Women with our poverty initiative and is helping us communicate with the congre-gation through the church newsletter.

We have classes from preschool (potty trained) to adults. I ask that you pray about helping this year. There will be a meeting in April to see who will be helping in this area. Last year we had about a 100 people to attend. The areas of concern are: Teachers (leaders), Arts & Crafts Leader, and Music Leader; we always need persons to assist in these areas. Shared Experience
(THE BLADE – Pages of Opinion, Tuesday, February 28th
2012 ; Section A, Page 8.
Ground was broken on the Smithsonian Institution’s
19th museum last week. When it opens in 2015, the
sign outside will read: National Museum of African
American History and Culture. But African –
American history is the history of every American,
whether you’re a recent immigrant or a descendant of
the earliest European colonists in Jamestown or
Plymouth.
The black experience in American is nearly 400 years
in the making. The first 246 years were dominated by
slavery, and the next century by Jim Crow. Despite
the past six decades of the civil rights movement,
sometimes-subtle forms of discrimination persist.
Still, that experience has been so important, and pro-
gress toward equality so profound, that the nation ded-
icates every February to the study of black history, so
that future generations will not forget past sacrifices
and accomplishments.
A national collection of artifacts that trace the road
African-Americans traveled form slave quarters to the
White House is a fitting addition to the Smithsonian’s
museums. The African-American museum, to be built
on the National Mall near where slave pens once
stood, already has 20,000 items , including slave re-
volt leader Nat Turner’s Bible, Underground Railroad
conductor Harriett Tubman’s hymnal, and a big plane
in which World War II’s Tuskegee airmen trained.
Other items range from the historic-shackles from a
slave ship, shards of stained-glass from the 1963
bombing of a black church in Birmingham, Ala., that
killed four girls – to the iconic- Louis Armstrong’s
trumpet, and Bo Diddley’s hat.
By the time the $500 million museum opens in the
shadow of the Washington Monument, its collection
likely will have grown several times.
But while this museum is about African-Americans, it
would be a mistake to think of it as only for African-
Americans. It is important to preserve history, and
even more important to teach it. The lessons that will
be housed in the Smithsonian’s newest addition are
worth learning – and relearning – by each new genera-
tion of Americans.

in the graduation or the birthday of your son or
daughter? How about celebrating your anniversary
or your spouse’s recent accomplishment? And of
course, flowers are a beautiful way to honor the
memory of a family member or special friend
You can give thanks to God and beautify our wor-
ship services by donating altar flowers for any Sun-
day you would like. Your name and the name of
your honoree will be printed in the Sunday Bulletin
and the newsletter, giving others a chance to know
about the occasion.
The donation price for each arrangement is $25,
made payable to BUMC Flower Fund.
Call Lisa at the church to put in your request.
