CASE STUDYNEW CONFERENCE OFFICE

Theconferencepresidentwascharismaticandwellliked.Inanypopularitycontest,hewouldeasilybethefavoredchoice.Soonafterascendinghisthrone,heincreasedtheworkers’salarieswithoutunionapproval.Tohim,theWorkingPolicywasmorethananinconvenience.Itwasdownrightrestrictiveandahindrance to the progress of the church. Whenaunionofficervisitedtheconferenceoneday,hewasastonishedtofindabrandnewconferenceofficebeingbuiltwithoutapprovalfromtheunion.Themassivestructurewasmuchlargerthanwhattheconference needed. Soonafter,itwasdiscoveredthattheconferencepresidenthadsoldapieceofpropertytofinancethebuildingproject.Heconvincedtheconferenceexecutivecommitteetoagreetothesalewhilethesecretary and treasurer were both away. The property was then sold without an agent or a bidding process. Theunionquicklyfoundoutaboutthesituationandintervened.Itwasthendiscoveredthattheproceedsfromthepropertysalewouldonlyhavecoveredone-thirdofthecostofthenewconferenceofficenearlybankruptingtheconference.Whenconfrontedbytheunionofficers,theconferencepresidentsaid,“Ididn’t know I needed union approval.” Theconferenceworkingcapitalwas28%anditsdebtswereequaledtoabout5monthsofitsannualtitheincome.
