Background Tulane University graduates are surveyed each year to ascertain their post-graduation plans. The information collected from the Graduating Student Survey provides valuable insight into the variety of paths pursued by Tulane graduates. The Tulane Career Center administered the Graduating Student Survey prior to 2011. In 2011, the Career Center, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Office of Alumni Affairs collaborated to complete this project. The collaboration between these offices proved successful and the results included a revised survey instrument and more robust survey administration. The collaboration between these offices continued for the deployment of the 2012 Graduating Student Survey as the survey instrument was refined further and the Office of Institutional Assessment assumed primary responsibility for administering the survey and analyzing the results. The information presented in this report was collected during the spring, summer, and fall of 2012, and highlights the responses of the Class of 2012.
Methodology Tulane undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who graduated in Summer 2011, Fall 2011, or Spring 2012 were considered eligible to participate in the 2012 Graduating Student Survey. The Office of the Registrar identified 3,558 eligible students in April 2012, and provided the necessary contact information to the Office of Academic Affairs for purposes of conducting the survey. A post-hoc review of the data indicated 3,623 students graduated over the aforementioned time period, thus 65 students graduates were not included in the survey process. The Graduating Student Survey was revised for the 2012 administration, and included questions about post-graduation activities, interest in alumni activities, and student learning outcomes (undergraduate students only). Demographic survey items were not included because that information was obtained through the student records system. The web-based survey was created using Qualtrics Survey Software, an online survey software product. Appendix A contains a complete copy of the survey instrument. Graduating students were contacted via email and invited to participate in the survey. The initial invitation was sent in May 2012 and non-responders received periodic email reminders and were encouraged to complete the survey before it closed in November 2012. Respondents were not offered any incentive to complete the survey. Students were required to verify their identity by entering their unique student identification number (commonly referred to as the SplashCard ID). Duplicate responses were removed from the result set, and all survey responses were kept confidential.

Response Rates by School
The Deans of the Schools of Continuing Studies and Law authored targeted messages to their graduates to increase response rates. Additionally, survey administrators noticed a low response rate from the School of Social Work and believe the timing of the survey contributed to that low rate. Specifically, most Social Work students graduate in December, but the survey is administered the following May – November. Efforts are already underway to engage December graduates closer to their graduation date for the 2013 Graduating Student Survey.
