2012 Calendar and 2010-2011 Year in Review

Elena Glidewell Hometown: Victoria Major: Nursing Following the birth of her baby while in high school, Elena wanted to do everything she could to provide the best life for her daughter. She graduated from Memorial High School with honors and enrolled at Victoria College, where she has maintained a 4.0 GPA and made the Dean’s List. “My ultimate goal in life is that when my daughter becomes my age, she will look back and be proud of everything her mom has accomplished.”

Tham Le Hometown: Victoria Major: Business Management When Tham first moved to the United States from Vietnam, she struggled with the English language and American customs. Through studying hard and becoming a math tutor at Victoria College, she became actively involved in social activities on campus and made many new friends. “Once I believed in myself, there was nothing I could not do.”

Lauren VasquezHometown: Victoria Major: Speech Pathology Lauren wasn’t ready to go to a large university just yet, so she decided to attend Victoria College. The small classroom sizes and the one-on-one attention she receives from professors have helped her ease into the college experience. “Victoria College gives students many opportunities that elsewhere may not be possible.”

2010-2011 “What’s Your Story?” Scholarship Winners

Dear Neighbor, Over the past year, Victoria College confronted a monumental challenge. The State of Texas enacted cuts in state funding that amounted to a reduction of $4.2 million over the next two years for VC. These cuts were in addition to nearly $1 million in cuts already made to VC’s 2010-11 state appropriations.

VC’s administration and Board of Trustees worked to find a solution to these budget cuts. Together we were successful in adopting a budget that allowed us to handle these reductions and maintain VC’s high standards for quality education while ensuring that our students have access to an education that is as affordable as we can make it.

Still, many students lack the finances to attend VC, and in our uncertain economy record numbers of students have turned to VC to secure their futures. We are pleased to be able to serve them and place them on a path to success. Our goal, as always, is to create success stories. The financial support of our donors is a critical part of these future success stories. Through endowments and scholarships, increased funding for support services, and funds to expand facilities and meet other critical resource needs, your support of VC is essential to our students’ success.

We need your support now more than ever. More students and tough economic times equate to more need.

Former students of the Wilkins School attended the grand opening of the VC Wilkins Industrial Training Center.

The Wilkins School, named after Principal Alice O. Wilkins, was the first black school in Port Lavaca. The school educated African-American students until desegregation in 1965. The building was recently repurposed through a partnership by VC and Calhoun County ISD to conduct specialized craft training classes that address employment needs in the area. 22 23 25 26 27 28

VC’s truck driving program has expanded to include classes at the VC Gonzales Center location. Due to increased activity and productivity in the Eagle Ford Shale, the need for drivers in the oilfield industry throughout the region has increased to the point where students are being recruited to local industries within the first weeks of class.

As part of its long-standing commitment to the Victoria community, each year, VC welcomes popular and relevant speakers to Victoria through its Lyceum Lecture Series.

Last March, Victoria had the chance to meet Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the best-selling book, “Eat, Pray, Love.”

In conjunction with Gilbert’s visit, VC also partnered with the Victoria Public Library to host VC Reads, along with the Victoria Reads Program, where students and community members read the book and discussed its important themes.

A visitor enjoys the Museum of the Coastal Bend’s newest permanent exhibit: “Cattle Boom! Ranching in Victoria and the Texas Coastal Bend, 1845-1929, “ sponsored by Atzenhoffer Chevrolet Cadillac and Borchers Southern Ranches, L.P. Texas’ legendary cattle industry originated in the Coastal Bend and this exhibit tells the story of ranching families, cattle drives and ranching culture through artifacts, historical photographs, documents and maps from regional collections. The VC/UHV Library is hosting an online exhibit of historical ranching photographs from families in Victoria and the surrounding region. 29 30

VC music professor Jonathan Anderson directs the VC Jazz Combo featuring up-and-coming local artists. These student musicians play numerous public concerts each year, including various jazz and music festivals throughout South Texas. Last spring, the VC Jazz Combo treated employees and students to an outdoor concert performed in the VC Quad so music lovers could enjoy the fine evening and great music while perched on picnic blan-kets and lawn chairs.

VC President Tom Butler awards a Distinguished Scholars scholarship to Jenna Braden, a VC nursing student. Last year was the inaugural year for VC’s newly established Distinguished Scholar Award. Nine exceptional students were selected as Distinguished Scholars from among the top candidates who applied for scholarships. The program is generously supported by the M.G. and Lillie A. Johnson Foundation, the VC Foundation and local donors.

VC’s new Pirate mascot was unveiled at last summer’s VC Night at the Ballpark, which has become an annual tradition for VC employees and students. VC treated employees and students to pizza, door-prize drawings and games between innings. The Generals’ first pitch was thrown by VC Foundation and Board of Trustees member Robby Burdge.

Each August, the three Rotary Clubs of Victoria—in partnership with Victoria College and local healthcare providers—host the annual Shots Across Texas Wellness Round Up for children aged newborn to 18 years old. In addition to free immunizations, children and their families have access to free vision, dental and other health screenings.

Sherry Cothron is taking electrical courses at VC. As industry in the Crossroads region grows, so does the demand for electricians, welders, HVAC technicians, pipefitters and millwrights.


After 45 years, VC decided to tear down the Fine Arts Auditorium. The space will make way for the expansion of classrooms, studios, rehearsal areas and the construction of an outdoor performance area.

Last August’s “If Walls Could Talk” event brought alumni, students, employees and community members together to commemorate the auditorium’s history. Visitors enjoyed slideshows and posters featuring the building’s history and got a first look at detailed plans for the renovation and expansion project. Commemorative bricks taken straight from the auditorium’s walls were also available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale of commemorative items benefit the VC Fine Arts program.

Last year, Adult Education student Lori Gaona earned her GED and graduated from VC’s Adult Education program. She now attends VC and has plans to enter the LVN program. In 2011, VC’s Adult Education Building on Crestwood was enhanced and updated. The building, which also houses the Victoria Adult Literacy Council, was purchased by the VC Foundation and owner-ship was transferred to Victoria College.

Last summer, the VC Foundation awarded funds to support the continued success and growth of VC sports programs. Funds were used to purchase two sets of portable bleachers for use in the VC Sports Center Gym. Additional bleachers will increase the seating capacity for future sporting events on campus.
