Krista & Michael Rager

Krista and Michael RagerCambria CountyPara-Coat Technologies, Inc.President/Owner, VP of Operations

In 2009, Michael Rager was working for a local company, applying conformal coating, when he noticed that they kept sending customers out of the area.“I thought, ‘instead of sending work out of the area, we should try to keep jobs here in Johnstown,’” he said. And so, together with his wife, Krista, he established Para-Coat Technologies, Inc. With Mike’s technical expertise and Krista’s marketing experience, the Ragers have built and maintained a successful business that is constantly growing and innovating. The company started out providing Parylene conformal coating to a few defense contractors, then they branched out into different coatings, including Acrylic, Silicone and Urethane. They now serve the military, aerospace, automotive and medical industries. Parylene conformal coating is a nano technology that protects the substrate from moisture, dust, corrosion, fungus and other extreme conditions. It is deposited as a gas in a vacuum chamber, which gets into every nook and cranny to cover the entire substrate. The Ragers both love to be outdoors. Recently, while fly fishing, Krista dropped her phone into the water and it was ruined.“There has to be a way to waterproof this,” she said. And so they began to look into waterproof coating technology. They have since developed Vapor Armor by Para-Coat Technologies, Inc. Vapor Armor is a proprietary process that coats the electrical device-including cell phones, iPods etc. from the inside out to completely protect the device from moisture. They have been in contact with various manufacturers about including the waterproof coating into the manufacturing process and they hope to hit the market with the product soon and to be able to distribute the product to the general public.“We are always looking to get into different aspects of industry. We are not going to stop here,” she said.Besides making exciting industry strides and potentially delivering the next big thing to hit the electronics market, the Ragers are also expecting their first baby in April.“I’m very grateful to have found somebody I love to go into business with. We build each other up and we feed off each other’s energy,” Krista said.
