    SHUFORDSTADIUM

Shuford Stadium has beenthe home to the CatawbaIndians football team sincethe College relocated toSalisbury in 1925 and playedhost to a CSTV (CBS College)nationally broadcast game onSeptember 27, 2007 againstMars Hill. In 1999, the fieldwas named after legendaryTribe coach Gordon Kirkland. The new stadium has a seat-ing capacity of 4,000 and canaccommodate up to 5,000spectators.

Prior to the latest recon-struction for the beginningof the 2003 season, the last major renovation to the stadium was the original Hurley Press Box facility that was built in the early1970s. The Hurley Press Box is a four-level facility. The bottom level consists of two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and two

concession areas. The second floor is currently used for storage, while thethird floor is the Wurster President’s Box which can seat 49 people. The

top floor has areas for two radio broadcasts, booths forboth home and visiting coaches andfilming, as well as the main media area.

Nearly 300,000 bricks were used inthe new construction of the press boxand the outside wall. The new renova-tion also includes concessions and restrooms on the visiting side of the facility. The new tiff-bermuda grass playing sur-face was installed by Course Crafters ofGainesville, GA. The new track, named forIrwin Belk, now runs in front of both thehome and visiting stands. Stadium lightswere added in 2006.

In 2006, Catawba played its first home night game in 32 years. The capacity crowd wastreated to a post-game fireworks show. Shuford Stadium was the site of a nationally televisedlive Thursday night game vs. Mars Hill on Sept. 27, 2007.
