Fall and Family Katelyn Jeff Nyhan

What do you do when you love pearls, a special place from your childhood and fall? For Katelyn Nyhan, it was a chance to incorporate these favorite things into her wedding. Her background in fashion merchandising gave her an edge to knowing the latest styles and trends, but she did her wedding design her way. The result was a beautiful, unforgettable day that delighted friends and family...and included the memory of the first special man in her life: her Dad, who had passed away four years before Katelyn’s wedding. Katelyn and Jeff met at Strange Brew in Manchester; he was on a date with another girl, but Katelyn was daring enough to give him her phone number. “He called the next day!” she recalls with a laugh. The couple were together for four years when Jeff popped the question while on a dinner date.

Katelyn recalls, “On October 16, 2009, we went to a new restaurant our friends had just opened, the Mint Bistro in Man-chester. We ordered some drinks and then Jeff started telling me how much he loved me and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. (This is not typical Jeff when we are out to din-ner, so I knew something was up.) He proceeded to take a little black box out of his pocket, and asked if I would spend the rest of my life with him as his wife! Well I said yes of course, but I was so surprised,,,I couldn’t even eat dinner I was so excited to tell everyone! It was a perfect night!” Jeff currently works at Manchester Community College as the Director of Safety. Katelyn is currently a Pharmecutical Rep for Astrazeneca.The Planning With a year to plan the wedding, Katelyn says “it was the perfect amount of time. Jeff and I love the fall and the foliage and since many people seem to get married in the spring or summer, we thought October was the perfect month for our wedding. “I wanted a navy blue and white color scheme. I also knew that orange would be a perfect accent color. Sunflowers are my favorite so we made those part of the flowers. I was aware that I needed to go all out so that the orange looked perfect, from the girl’s shoe colors to the ties the groomsmen wore.” Pearls are Katelyn’s favorite jewelry and she incorporated them into her wedding, from pearl beading on her gown to the headpiece to the napkin rings. Katelyn’s pretty fur jacket added a unique touch to the gown. She recalls, “The morning of my wedding, I was getting ready at the hotel with all the girls. My mom ran home to grab a few items as it was a brisk October morning, I had purchased the fur shrug from Target two years prior. It was just hanging in the closet and my mom had an instinct to grab it for me! It was the best add-on to my ensemble that day. It was a bit chilly on the golf course so it was perfect and I was so excited when I saw how great the fur jacket looked in our pictures.” When asked about the flowers, she explains, “I knew I wanted sunflowers, since they are my favorite! We had two large vases on the altar and the church was filled with sunflowers, blue delphinium and bells of Ireland that were later brought to the reception. For the cocktail hour the tables had floating sunflow-ers in navy blue water in cylinder vases. They were amazing. At the Manchester Country Club, we had sunflowers and greens on the mantels. Our centerpieces were 6 x 6 square vases with jewel-toned flowers of green hydrangeas, magenta Gerber dai-sies, orange tulips and orange ranaculus in vases wrapped with leaves from the inside. The girls’ bouquets were orange roses wrapped with navy ribbon. The maid-of-honor had pink and orange and the flower girls carried flower balls made of magen-ta mums with pearl pins. The guys all wore orange spray roses wrapped with the navy ribbon. Jeff and I had white flowers. He wore a white rose wrapped in white and I had all white roses.” Jeff and Katelyn chose the Manchester Country Club (MCC) because it was where Katelyn and her sister grew up. She re-calls, “Easter, Mother’s Day, and every Friday night out with my parents for dinner since we were little, we went to the Country Club. It was also my dad’s favorite place. My dad passed away four years ago in April, so this was also very hard not hav-ing him there on my wedding day. I knew that he would have wanted me to be married at a church and then have the recep-tion at the MCC. I did not even look anywhere else; it was fate when Marilyn from MCC said October 16, 2010 was open, so we booked it! I knew I would be able to get whatever we needed

Romance at the PeakMallory and Ralphy Conant

The PlanningThe couple met in March, 2010 and were excited to plan their wedding after getting engaged in Feb. 2011. Mallory, who is a personal care provider, lived in Alton,NH with her son Kaleb. Ralphy is employed at Lakes Region Community Services as a direct support pro-fessional. With 13 months to plan the wedding, the couple decided on a warm weather month for the big day. Mallory saw a purple and blue orchid color scheme online and fell in love with the flowers and colors. Because they had spent time snowboarding at the ski area and loved it, the couple decided to have their wedding at Pats Peak. They had seen photos of the resort and found it to be quite beautiful in the summer also. At the outdoor ceremony at Pats Peak, Mallory’s son, Kaleb walked her down the aisle and her step-father John Markland gave her away. Ralphy’s mother had passed away, but she was not forgotten on the wedding day; a straw hat she wore when going through che-motherapy was placed on a bench during the ceremony and a dove was released in her memory. (In case of rain, the ceremony would have been held indoors at Pats Peak.) The guest list included 75 friends and family and the wedding party totaled 10 people. The wedding party was very helpful in putting the final touches on the reception decor. “I planning our wedding, but I had a hard time seeing how everything would come together. The flowers, the dresses, decorations and everything did come together better than I imagined! I started setting up the reception room at Pats Peak, but the girls in the wedding party and the florist finished the set up while I was having my hair done. When I came upstairs to see the reception room all decorated, the first thing I said was, ‘Now I can see it!’ ” After the ceremony, guests and the wedding party sat down to a delicious meal catered by Pats Peak. The menu consisted of garden salad, Chicken Saltimbocca, London Broil, glazed carrots, and garlic mashed potatoes. During the reception, music was provided by Music Man DJ and the guests and bride and groom danced the night away. The fun and unusual wedding cake was provided by Jacques Pastries; the cake’s top and bottom tiers were espresso with mocha filling and the middle tier was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. The groom’s cake, a special surprise from Mallory to Ralphy, was a unique design of a fish coming out of water; it was hazlenut with hazelnut filling. Says Mallory, “My best advice to other brides-to-be is this: at some point during the day/night, take just a moment to yourselves to take it all in. Everyone that has been married told us how fast it was going to go by and they were right. Our wedding from start to finish was 5 1/2 hours long and it felt like only an hour. The day is about you and your husband, so make the decisions about the wedding based on what the two of you want, not what others think would be good for you. Also, the little things that may go wrong are far less important than the fact that you are marrying your best friend and the man of your dreams.” Ralphy went to great lengths to make the proposal very special; that romantic attitude carried over into the honeymoon. The couple enjoyed an eight-day cruise to Bermuda on the Norwegian Dawn.

The proposalA man in love will go to great lengths to capture the woman of his dreams. When Ralphy asked Mallory to be his wife, he put a lot of planning - and love - into the proposal. Mallory recalls, “Ralphy proposed on the ski slope at Pats Peak in Henniker. He had asked the Pats Peak staff to help him set up a romantic proposal. The staff was more than willing to block off a corner of the Puff Trail. They laid out the candles and red roses Ralphy hand picked himself. “I thought we were just going for a day of snowboard-ing. I am an experienced snowboarder but this was only Ralphy’s second time. So, not knowing, I was a little ways ahead of him on the trail. I had stopped to wait for him and he went flying by me. He came to a quick stop and fell face first into the snow! He got up and hopped to a decorated spot with roses and candles in the snow and called me over. I quickly realized his fall was intentional because he didn’t know how to stop himself. When I got closer, he dropped to one knee and asked if I would marry him. Wiping away tears of joy, I said yes!”

I had been to a wedding there and it was beautiful, good food and plenty of room to dance!” The couple put a lot of time and thought into the popular candy bar. “I chose wooden letters and painted them, drilled and placed them on dowels to be the focus on the table. We added some fall flowers to wrap around it. The tables were cov-ered in beautiful navy table cloths and I had Styrofoam look-ing pearls spread out all over the tables and strands of pearls draped on the side. The candy jars were spread out over the tables, each with their particular candy tag and ribbon that I created for each type of candy. I found cute gum ball machines that were there for show, but they were all taken! We added oversized lollipops to blue planting vases that I found and filled with gumdrops and pinwheels. The line for the candy bar was crazy—it was a big hit!” Katelyn says. “We also had a cigar bar; it was a surprise for my husband. He loves cigars so I knew it would be a perfect treat for him. I had it set up with a humidor, which I had monogrammed for him and that was the focal point for the cigar bar. I then had the various cigars displayed in the boxes, each with descriptions of what type of cigar it was and the background on it. They were all out on the table, which was done in white and navy and pearls. I had monogrammed matches made and those were also dis-played on the table as well as cigar cutters. “I did have a memory table for my Dad. I wanted to have something simple, yet meaningful, so a table was set up ad-jacent to our sweetheart table with a family photo, a photo of my Dad and me and a beautiful quote. Those were all in pearl frames. I had some white roses and a candle on the table. We did a donation to the American Heart Association in memory of my dad. On each table we had a beautiful card that matched the blue, white and orange theme.” The wedding cake was from Jacques Pastries and was red velvet with cream cheese frosting. “I love bows,” says Katelyn, “and we saw bows on the sample cake and decided we wanted bows and a blue pearl look on our cake. It was three tiers with a large bow at the top layer and on the front.” The band Mama Kicks played during the reception for 220 guests who danced into the evening. A Bit of Advice from the Bride Katelyn says, “The advice I would give to any other bride is to enjoy every minute; the year went by so fast. When it was all over I felt like ‘Okay, now what can I plan?!’ I was very orga-nized in all my paper work, magazine clippings, ideas etc. What worked best for me was a large binder, which was later named the ‘wedding bible’ by my family; it went everywhere with me. I kept everything from vendor’s business cards and contact info, to the guest list, info from wedding expos that I attended, sam-ple programs, invitations from weddings we had been to and ideas that came to mind. I had also created a calendar, so each month I would put in what we were doing, what we had accom-plished and what was up for the next month.”The Honeymoon Jeff and Katelyn left for their honeymoon the next day to St. Lucia where they stayed at the Sandal’s Grande, an all-inclusive resort. She recalls, “The place was amazing. We met so many great people that we still keep in contact with. The highlights of the honeymoon were an amazing speed boat tour of the island, horseback riding in the ocean and relaxing at the resort spa. It was a fabulous week and we would love to go back someday.” That second honeymoon will have to wait a while, because the couple are expecting their first child. With Katelyn’s ability to plan events, their child will have some wonderful birthday parties in the years to come!

The Proposal: Lori and Jeffrey met 6 1/2 years ago and knew they were compatible from the get-go. Theytook their time getting to know each other, however, and it wasn’t until Christmas of 2009 that Jeffrey proposed to Lori. “We decided to get married this year because my Dad is ill and I wanted him to be at my wedding. We kept it small and simple; I did most of the planning because Jeff is busy with his consulting business and running a 500-acre farm in Danbury, NH,” Lori says.The Plan and the Big Day: “It all fell together quickly,” Lori explains. “It was pretty laid back. My daughter and son and Jeff’s two boys made up the wedding party. The color scheme was bright red, choral and light green, reflecting the colors of my bouquet.” The wedding ceremony and reception took place at the Inn on Newfound Lake in Bridgewater, NH. “We know Larry, the innkeeper and we love the food and the ambiance,” says Lori. The guest list was in keeping with the intimate affair - just around 30 close friends and family. After the 1 pm ceremony on the lawn of the inn, the wedding party and guests dined in the inn’s main dining room and danced to the sounds of a trio of musicians from the Concord Community Music School. When asked where she got her simple and sexy halter wedding dress, Lori laughs, “I call it my Marilyn Monroe dress! It’s actually a dress I already had and one I love!” The strapless dress was easy to move in and perfect for the heat-wave July day. Casual cotton shirt and slacks for Jeff were in keeping with the relaxed day, versus a formal suit or tuxedo. “Less stress” could have been the theme of the wedding that turned out to be a fun and memorable day for everyone. The attention to every detail, the idea of including family and worrying less about the little things made this wedding a perfect, beautiful event. inding a wedding photographer today can be a difficult task. It’s hard finding a true professional who understands light, expo-sure, printing, album design, and most im-

portantly, how to treat their clients. Before you start thinking about hiring a photographer, ask yourself, “What type of photographer am I looking for?” There are three types of wedding photographers in today’s photography market and you should be aware of each type and the key differences of each.

First type: ‘The shoot and burner’Very rarely has an education or background in photography or any other artistic medium.Their main selling point is a DVD of pictures.Prices are below average.If they offer albums and prints, the images are often low quality.

Second type: ‘The photography factory’Typically does not have an education or back-ground in photography or any other artistic me-dium.Prices range from below average to average.Who you meet with initially is sometimes not the photographer that is sent to photograph your wed-ding.Albums and prints are ‘OK’ quality.

Third type: ‘The artist’Typically these photographers have an artistic background as well as an educational background in photography. This photographer will document and create those one-of-a-kind memorable mo-ments with his or her own unique style.Prices range from average to above average.Albums and prints are high quality.

8 Ways to Find the Perfect Fit…Choosing a wedding venue is just like shopping

for your wedding dress.By: Joëlle Creamer, Manchester Country Club

One the most exciting parts of the wedding-planning process is buying the dress. So why not make the venue shopping just as fun!

Really, all the same principles apply:1. Do your research. There are a number of websites

where you can search venues by location, budget, capacity and more. Flip through bridal magazines and check out wedding blogs. Get a feel for what you like, don’t like and what you dream about.

2. But be open minded. It’s a good idea to start your search for the perfect venue with an idea of what you’re looking for, but don’t be close-minded. You might be looking for an empire-waist dress but the a-line design really highlights your figure. Likewise, you might find the venue of your dreams that’s just a tad over your budget. Although you originally wanted a fall wedding, you learn the venue offers winter discounts making the wedding of your dreams within reach.

3. Try it on for size. Visit the venues you are considering, and visit lots of different types—hotel or inn, country club, event center, historic site. You’ll be able to really experience the setting in person. Many venues also offer complimentary tastings, too, so be sure you and your fiancé attend.

4. Love your salesperson. Happy people make happy events. If the staff is positive, professional and experienced, then your event will go off without a hitch (or at least none that you or your guests notice). The salesperson is oftentimes the wedding coordinator, too. So you’ll be working with this person and her team throughout the entire planning process. Make sure you click.

5. Ask, “How do I look?” Although the most important thing about your wedding dress is how it makes you feel, it’s reassuring to know your friends and family think you look gorgeous, too. Make sure you ask the same question for your venue. Check references and reviews. Many wedding websites post reviews so they are easy to access.

6. Schedule fittings. Once you choose your dress, you’ll need to order it, schedule appointments for alterations, get a final fitting, press, and pick up. It’s important to stay on top of the timeline for your venue, too. Your wedding coordinator should help you to do this, but get familiar with the dates before you book - when is the deposit due? Step payments? How about final guest count and seating plan?

7. Don’t forget your accessories. Ah yes, don’t forget the finishing touches. Is there parking available? If so, is there valet? Is there a bridal suite and/or groom’s room? Whatever small details that are important to you should be addressed.

8. Make it your own and have a ball! No wedding is alike. You’re unique as a person, and your wedding should be a reflection of you. If it feels good, go with it. And have a ball!

The right venue is out there waiting for you. Be patient, consider these helpful hints, and you will find the perfect fit.

How long will the DJ be playing music? What sort of music do you want for the reception? Is the DJ familiar with the venue where your re-ception will be held? Is there an overtime charge if your reception runs late? Does the DJ have a demo or video of him/her DJing other weddings? What will be the DJs attire? How important is it to you how the DJ dresses at your reception? What will be the required payment and when will final payment be due? Seek feedback from other couples you know that were recently married. Who did they use for a DJ? Were they happy? You can also ask your reception venue coordinator or your wedding coordinator for a preferred list of DJs. What tips can they share with you? If you attend the wedding of a friend or relative, pay close attention to the DJ. Are they professional, do they get the crowd up and dancing at the appro-priate times? Does the DJ seem comfortable with the traditional portions of the wedding, such as in-troducing the wedding party, the first dance, cutting the cake, bouquet and garter toss and other moments during your reception? Ask the DJ if he/she can describe their perfor-mance style. Will the DJ give you a contract and will he/she personalize the wedding reception? Does the DJ have liability insurance, and can he/she provide proof of insurance? Is there back-up DJ equipment in case the system has a glitch during the reception? What other entertainment services do they offer, such as special lighting, sound effects, etc?

you have to decide how important photography is to you. You may be looking for a budget photographer and that is ok. If, however, you have a larger budget for a wedding photographer, shop around to find the professional that fits your style. The best way to find out which type of photog-rapher is for you is by meeting them in person. This way you can see their work. You will be able to see, touch, feel the albums, the prints, and the rest of the products they have to offer. Examine the finished product they are showing you. Look at the way they design their albums. Ask yourself if you picture your wedding prints and al-bum looking like this? Look at the finished print quality. Ask them about their experience as a photographer and as an artist. Ask them where they went to school. Treat this like a job interview, but this time you are the one conduct-
