First Year Camper

Camp Saffran is proud to offer a special program for new Scouts and first-year campers. This is a week-long, all-day program focused on helping young Scouts enjoy their first summer at camp as

they experience all of the program areas and work on advancement toward the Tenderfoot,

Second Class, and First Class ranks.

After breakfast Monday morning, Scouts participating in the First Year Camper program meet at

the FYC program area and are formed into Patrols. An enthusiastic and caring staff alternately

provides instruction on Scouting skills, exposes Scouts to various programs in each of the program areas throughout camp, and encourages teamwork, cooperation, and the Scouting Spirit.

Scouts will get a chance to swim, shoot, and play sports every day, and hallmark features of the

program include a five-mile hike through camp and a special First Year Camper inpost.

Adult leaders are encouraged to volunteer some of their time assisting the First Year Camper

program, whether instructing particular skills, accompanying the hike, supervising Free Swim and Free Shoot times, or just providing moral support during games.

Morning

The morning (9:00-12:00) is spent in the First Year Camper area working on requirements for rank advancement. Skills related to the following requirements will be taught over the course of

the week:

Tenderfoot 4ab, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12

Second Class 1, 2, 3cdef, 6, 7, 8

First Class 1, 2, 4abcd, 6, 7, 8, 9

Afternoon

During the first part of the afternoon (2:00-3:00), Scouts will have an opportunity to rotate

through the Pool for free swim, and Archery and Rifle for free shoot. During the second part of

the afternoon, Scouts will be able to take merit badges. The First Year Camper staff will be providing instruction for the following merit badges between 3:00 and 5:00:

Canoeing (swimmers only), Leatherwork, Mammal Study, Weather, Woodcarving

Scouts will be able to choose two of the above merit badges to take; one from 3:00 to 4:00 and

the other from 4:00 to 5:00 (except Canoeing, which will run from 3:00 to 5:00).

Evening

Assorted fun (optional) activities will be held during the evenings for First Year Campers to

participate in. The highlight is the special FYC inpost that will be held on Thursday evening. Scouts will take a short hike to their own campfire circle and participate in a campfire program

led by the First Year Camper staff. Scouts will return to their campsites to sleep following the

campfire.

Merit Badge Program

The merit badge program is the pinnacle of any Boy Scout summer camp. Merit badge classes at Camp Saffran run throughout the morning and afternoon, five days a week. Scouts should expect

to attend all five classes in order to earn the badge. The merit badge schedule is listed on the

inside cover of this Program Guide.

Online Sign-Up

Scouts should sign up for merit badges online before coming to camp. The online registration

system guarantees Scouts a space in the classes they want (some classes have an attendance cap, which allows for a higher level of interaction between staff and campers, hence a higher quality

of instruction) and helps the staff to adequately prepare for classes each week. The online

registration system is available at:
