BOOK OF LEADERS 2011
LIVE UNITED
Basic Needs, Health, Income and Education: These are the basic things we all need for a good life. With the generous support of Leadership Givers, United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley provides our neighbors with opportunities to improve their lives in all four areas. They are the building blocks that strengthen families, neighbors and our local community.
A Good Life
This book is dedicated to the men and women who lead our community towards bigger dreams, brighter minds,
stronger bodies and independent lives.
Leaders inspire. Leaders engage. Leaders infuse hope with action.
Leadership isn’t a singular action. It’s not one person or one organization. It’s not one action or one opportunity.
Leadership is commitment. It’s courage. It’s bold. It’s humble.
It requires persistence, shared goals, listening and stepping beyond what’s comfortable and familiar to achieve what we aspire to - a region that’s vital and ready for whatever the future will bring. Most of all, it takes YOU.
YOU are the people who make a difference in our community. YOU are the ones who have stood by United Way through a difficult economic downturn knowing that your neighbors are in greater need than ever. YOU are the ones we have been able to count on year after year to sustain our partner agencies. YOU understand that to LIVE UNITED means we are all interconnected and it takes ALL of us to help our community prosper.
I continue to be inspired by all the ways YOU LEAD. Thank you for being YOU and for keeping our community strong as we LIVE UNITED, together.
A MESSAGE FROM THE CAMPAIGN CHAIR
David Passman, CEO, Carmike Cinemas2011 Campaign Chair
TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETYOur community’s top philanthropists are working for long-term solutions in our region. Leveraging
their gifts for maximum impact, these outstanding individuals are not only role models, but their gifts of $10,000 or more per year mean a significant investment in a better quality of life for
individuals and families in the Chattahoochee Valley.
The gifts of 88 very generous members make up our Tocqueville Society. These charitable donors contributed to 24%, or $1,562,728 of the 2011 campaign.
ALEXIS de
Alexis de Tocqueville was a French aristocrat who admired the voluntary spirit of American society. His observations formed the 1835 work “Democracy in America,” a detailed study of American society, culture and politics.
Perhaps, his most important observation was that Americans helped one another in times of need. He recognized, applauded and immortalized the volunteer spirit that lives in an American’s heart.

TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY LEVELS
TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY STEP-UP PROGRAMThe Tocqueville Society step-up program is a convenient way donors can increase their level of giving over a three-year period. The program is made possible by a challenge grant from a local foundation.
To participate in the step-up program, a donor would make a gift to United Way of $5,000 the first year and the foundation would match the $5,000 to make the donor a Tocqueville Society donor. The donor’s gift would increase to $7,500 the second year, reaching the $10,000 mark the third year.
Today, more than ever, we need leaders to step up and become Tocqueville Society members. Your annual gift of $10,000 or more to United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley will set an example for others to follow. Your generosity ensures that people in our community will continue to find the help they need through United Way funded programs. Your generosity helps build a better community for all of us.
You are invited to join the men and women of the Tocqueville Society. These are men and women who are committed to making a real difference in our community; men and women who care about advancing the common good by focusing on Basic Needs, Income, Health and Education- the building blocks for a good life.

LIVE UNITED YOUTH COUNCIL
LIVE UNITED YOUTH CAMP
Live United Youth Council is a student-led community change organization in the Chattahoochee Valley. With support from United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley and representatives from each participating school, students in the Live United Youth Council help impact the community, grow as leaders and develop relationships within the non-profit sector.
GOALS
ADVOCATE: Educate members and other students about critical community issues in the areas of Basic Needs, Income, Health and Education.
VOLUNTEER: Serve and recruit peers to serve in meaningful ways to create lasting change.
GIVE: Fundraise and be responsible for investing those funds to help address critical issues facing the Chattahoochee Valley.
Live United Youth Camp is a three-day event that is focused on helping youth grow as leaders and connecting them to the community, as well as, building lasting relationships with the United Way. The camp is focused on teaching students about United Way’s four priority areas: Basic Needs, Income, Health and Education.
The students learn about homelessness and poverty, and have the chance to learn about the agencies that are working to combat these issues in our area. They also get connected with opportunities that will allow them to give back to the community. Seventh grade students from area schools have the opportunity to attend camp. Live United Youth Camp is sponsored by Aflac.

United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, along with a volunteer committee, has formed a Women’s Leadership Council in order to engage female donors giving at the Leadership level - this includes approximately 300 donors. Other United Ways who have developed an affinity group of female leadership donors have experienced substantial growth in their overall campaign while increasing the overall impact in their communities. The Women’s Leadership Council will provide members with an opportunity to learn about needs in our community, network with peers, have fun and make a difference!
There are currently 17 Council members serving on one of three committees: Service Project, Event, and Membership.

ENDOWMENT LEGACY SOCIETYYour generous leadership gift to the United Way annual campaign impacts lives today. Your investment in the United Way Endowment impacts lives forever. Thepurpose of the United Way Endowment is to ensure vital health and human service programs are available for generations to come. The endowment is equipped toreceive gifts, the principal is preserved, and theinvestment return will be used to support all United Way programs or a specific initiative in perpetuity.
The Legacy Society exists to accommodate the wishes of people who make planned gifts to United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley. A planned gift is a deferred gift, meaning it is arranged now and fulfilled later, oftenaccording to bequests in wills. Joining the Legacy Society will enable donors to continue their tradition of caring and prepares United Way to address the pressing issues yet to come. Donors also receive satisfaction in supporting the causes they care deeply about, receive immediate and future tax benefits, benefit the entire community, and become an example for others to follow. This act of giving to United Way provides the intangible reward of knowing lives and the conditions in the community will continue to be improved.
