Auckland Swimming is delighted to have its largest ever representation qualified for the

2012 London Olympics. Auckland will be represented by no less than seven swimmers

for New Zealand; Lauren Boyle, Melissa Ingram, Steven Kent, Penelope Marshall, Carl

O’Donnell, Hayley Palmer and Glenn Snyders. Auckland Swimming is also proud to

have Amini Fonua qualified to swim at the Olympics representing Tonga. We wish

them all the best for this pinnacle event and are excited for our swimmers knowing that

the swimmers, coaches and support networks have done everything possible to ensure

that our swimmers fulfil their potential.

Auckland was also in the honours at the Swimming New Zealand Awards with Kings

Swim Club achieving Club of the Year, Glenn Snyders with Swim of the Year, and

Lauren Boyle for Swimmer of the Year. Congratulations to you all.

The Auckland Swimming League has continued to be a great event for Auckland

Swimming. The 2011 Premier League Final was hotly contested at West Wave in

August by competitive and ‘non-competitive’ swimmers alike. It is great to see those

supporting and on the fringes of competitive swimming being able to participate. The

Junior League continues to be a significant stepping-stone for young swimmers entering

our sport. The fun and atmosphere of these events is worth witnessing, especially when

decisions are to be made around changes to senior competitions.

We are excited to have launched our new starting blocks at West Wave in time for the

Olympic Qualifying event in April. Testing has shown that for elite swimmers these start

blocks are making a difference of as much as 0.3 of a second in each event. A number of

Olympic events were qualified with margins less than 0.3 second. Our investment has

certainly paid off for those swimmers and we hope our future swimmers are also able to

enjoy the benefits. Congratulations to our Executive Officer for obtaining the necessary

funding and consent to have these installed on time.

Tonia Wheeler, our Office Administrator, retired in May. For many of our clubs Tonia

was the point of contact with Auckland Swimming. We thank Tonia for her many years

of dedication, commitment and enthusiasm for Auckland Swimming. Tonia continues

to serve Auckland Swimming as a volunteer. Chantal Walker has replaced Tonia and is

quickly becoming part of ASA.

There is no doubt that activities outside of the pool have kept us distracted this past year.

The ASA remits to the Swimming NZ AGM were withdrawn, and in place a mediation

9

process and subsequent Review were implemented. At the time of writing, the Regions

are yet to accept the Review recommendations at the Swimming NZ SGM to be held in

July. The ASA Board is in full support of the Review recommendations chaired by Chris

Moller, and look forward to implementing the necessary changes and the outcomes that

will be achieved by these.

Many thanks to the Executive Groups; Competitive Swimming, Technical, Events

Management and Technology. These Groups are an integral component of Swimming

Auckland in the planning, development and implementation of our events. Our

acknowledgments to all who hold positions on the Executive Groups, and to all the

volunteers who officiate poolside.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to each of our Auckland Board members. The

past year has been especially challenging in terms of time and commitment required as a

Board member. Each of the Board members has willingly brought their own expertise

and experience to work together to resolve issues. We are fortunate to retain the insight

and proficiency of our Executive Officer, Brian Palmer. Brian continues to work

tirelessly for the betterment of our swimmers and swimming community. My

appreciation and gratitude to you all.

The next period of time will no doubt also be interesting. If the Review

recommendations are accepted at the Swimming NZ SGM, by this time next year

Auckland Swimming will have a new Constitution, Strategic Plan and competition

structure. I am sure that our swimmers will enjoy and excel in the new environment.

I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all who make the work of the

ASA possible.

On your behalf I am confident I can express that we are all extremely proud of all of

our swimmers, whether they be the new entrant at the beginning of their journey in

ASL Junior League or Level 3, or one of our eight registered Auckland London 2012

Olympians.1 It is the passion that each of you have for life and your sport and the

effort which you place into the fulfilment of your dreams which inspires a small

army of people who give generously of their time to make that possible.

In any year there are countless hours contributed by many hundreds of busy and

capable volunteers to make the ASA’s work possible. For those of us who work at

this for our day jobs it is an inspiration to see the efforts you all make. The level of

capability and engagement you all offer is quite outstanding.

With this Annual Report I have now completed my third year in this role. As I have

got to know ever more of you I am quite simply and deeply grateful for all that you

do. I would particularly like to make special mention of Tonia Wheeler who retired

in May. She has quite simply been a rock of the association for longer than almost

every person currently engaged in the sport. An examination of the accounts will

show that she did what she did for the love of the sport. She certainly did not get

rich from her many years of tireless work. The collective knowledge which she had

is held in smaller parts by many within the community. However, many of us will

now need to work that little bit harder to unleash what we know in her absence.

Tonia, thank you and a thousand times over, thank you so much.

Although we are a sport, we are very much in the business of sport and I am very

pleased to report a continuing trend of improved financial performance. At the time

of writing the final audit has not yet been completed, but the draft accounts prepared

by our accountants are reporting (after adjustments and accruals) a profit of $13,000.

This represents a pleasing turnaround in fortune over the last three years. Our

business model is intended to be self-sustaining and to place minimal demands on

the resources or our members. While it is a robust model, it is still vulnerable to

changes in funding methods, and under the proposed new constitutional

arrangements with SNZ and the Whole of Sport Funding Plan, our capacity to trade

independently will still need to be vigorously defended. The self-sustaining aspect

of our business model is made possible with the generous support of various

community and commercial groups. While not an exhaustive list, I would like to

especially recognise and thank (in no particular order) The Trusts Charitable

Foundation representing the Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts, ASB

Community Trust, the Laser Group, Bartercard, Walker and Hall, CLM (Swim

Magic) and Swim T3.

Also particular thanks to the Auckland City Council and the management and staff

of West Wave with whom we enjoy an extremely positive and constructive

relationship. This year the Henderson and Massey Local Board have been simply

outstanding in their support of our sport and I am deeply indebted to them for their

efforts and support on our behalf.

Throughout the year we have enjoyed a good and constructive relationship with our

regional colleagues around the country. Our interests and theirs are closely aligned

in many areas. We welcome swimmers from other regions to our meets and through

the year many of you have contributed to ensuring that we offer the best regional

competition format in the country. Sadly we have found this year that many of our

common interests have been located outside of the pool, but we have benefited

enormously as we have sought to establish better dialogue and understanding with

regard to the aspirations of our colleagues outside of the Auckland region. Thanks

to Maria Clarke Law for their tireless efforts to help us through challenging times

and also to Sport New Zealand (formerly SPARC) for their efforts to assist in placing

the sport in a better place.

A particularly important part of our work has involved interfacing with the new

Auckland Council and its various arms. My personal involvement as a member of

various groups, including the ASRRG (a special advisory panel to the Mayor and

Council on sport and recreation matters), the Auckland Sports Coalition and the

North Harbour Sports Council, has ensured a recognition for our sport well beyond

that which our participating competitive numbers would ordinarily dictate. Our

voice is one which is well respected and in critical areas of facility and infrastructure

decision-making we have secured a real capacity to be heard and to make a

difference. One of the Council projects with which I have had engagement was the

redevelopment of the Auckland Tepid Baths as a member of the Mayoral Advisory

Panel. It has been very satisfying to be engaged at a level which ensured, not just

retention, but also the superb redevelopment of this iconic Auckland facility for

future generations.

Through active involvement with these bodies, we (the ASA) have had a very active

and significant input into the Auckland 30-year Plan which affects every aspect of

the sporting community and its interface with the Council, the Auckland LTP,

various local board plans, the Greater Auckland Aquatic Action Plan (GAAAP),

Auckland Council community Funding Policy, together with the Community and

Facility Partnership Policy, the proposed Flavel Bill on Gambling Harm Reduction

(and community funding), the document covering Auckland Council’s strategic

direction relating to Sport and Parks, Reserves and Open Space Policy, to name but a

few. I believe that through this work our position as a sport in the community of

Auckland is better protected and enhanced.

As we look forward to the coming year, may I remind you of a frequent measure I

apply to all of our work in the ASA, which is whether or not the work we do places

the sport in a better place than we found it. The judgement on that front will only be

made in years to come, but it is my hope that we in Auckland will continue to

provide the strong leadership in the coming months and years of significant change

in our sport and that this will lead us to a brighter future. That leadership alone

cannot come as a result of the work of a small handful of people, but only as we

harness strength and resource from our entire swimming community.
