protect the net with her 6-1 frame. Redshirt sophomore Maureen Sabado (Kodiak) and true freshman Breanne Sytnyk (Shoal Lake, Manitoba) could also contrib-ute in the middle. The outside hitter duties will fall largely on the shoulders of former Alaska prep stars Julia Mackey (Fairbanks/West Valley), Sarah Johnson (South Anchorage) and Katelynn Zanders (South Anchorage), while another player from the South’s 2011 state-title squad, Lindsey Logan, projects as a solid back-row performer.

Bush, from Graham, Wash., contributed along the back row and as a serving special-ist in her redshirt freshman campaign, lead-ing the team in serve percentage (.933) and ace-to-error ratio (1.09). With the exception of Viotto, however, the majority of the kills and blocks from last year must be entirely replaced, with that job falling among one junior-college transfer and five true freshmen. Junior middle blocker Jodi Huddleston comes north from Green’s old school – Western Nebraska CC – and will look to

Coming off their third straight sea-son with at least 18 wins, the Alaska

Anchorage volleyball program is currently enjoying an unprecedented run of success. With head coach Chris Green entering his fifth season at the helm, the Seawolves have had four consecutive winning seasons and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances – both firsts for a Seawolf vol-leyball program founded in 1980. If the Seawolves are to continue claim-ing their place among the top teams in NCAA Div. II’s toughest region, it will be up to a small, solid core of returners and an untested group of newcomers. Three starters are back among the four returning letterwinners from last year’s club that went 18-9 overall and finished second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference by just one match. “With the youth on our team, it’s nice to have veterans who you know you can count on,” said Green, who is 74-40 in his first four campaigns in Anchorage. “I have a great deal of confidence in our two seniors, and our other two returners now have two full years in the program. This is such a tough league and the West Region is so deep, it will be a great test for our newcom-ers to see how much they can contribute.” Seniors Kimya Jafroudi and Nikkie Viotto should lead the team on and off the court in 2012. Jafroudi, the reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year, averaged 11.16 assists per set in league play last year and also earned 2nd Team All-GNAC honors. The 5-7 setter from Southern California helped the Seawolves lead the GNAC and break the program record for team attack percentage at .236. Viotto, meanwhile, has proven she can play almost any position on the court over her first three seasons, appearing as a libero, defensive specialist and outside hitter, while seeing action in all 311 sets of her career. The Eagle River native averaged 2.10 kills per set as a junior last season and led the GNAC with 39 aces. Junior setter/defensive specialist Siobhan Johansen is another versatile vet-eran who Green can depend on. The Palmer (Colony HS) product can play setter at a high level – having started at that position as a true freshman – or lock down a back corner on defense as she did throughout her sophomore campaign. Johansen will be one of the candidates to take over the open libero position, with fellow returner Jordan Bush also in the mix.

ous nine seasons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb. Green built a powerhouse program at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I national champion-ship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green’s seasons, including a current string of four straight ‘Final 4’ appearances. In the last three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

CHRIS GREENHead Coach • 5th Season

In just four seasons at the helm, head coach Chris Green has led the Alaska

Anchorage program to one of the most remarkable turnarounds in collegiate vol-leyball, culminating with three straight NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The most recent campaign saw Green’s

Seawolves finish 18-9 for the second straight time and again make the playoffs in perhaps the nation’s toughest region. The 2011 squad also recorded a league-best and school-record .236 team hitting per-centage as it came just one win shy of sharing the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. With Jackie Matthisen (GNAC Player of the Year, honorable mention All-American), Robyn Burton (All-American) and Kimya Jafroudi (GNAC Newcomer of the Year), Green has now produced two All-Americans, three honorable mention All-Americans, two GNAC Players of the Year, two GNAC Newcomers of the Year and six All-GNAC First Team selections in his short tenure. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, Green’s squad wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the best winning percentage (.742) and posted the second-most victories in program history. In 2008, Green took over a UAA club that had won just five matches the previous campaign, producing a solid 15-14 mark. The Seawolves captured the title of their own UAA Invitational and recorded their first win over a ranked team in almost a decade when they beat then-No. 8 Augustana. Under Green’s tutelage, outside hit-ter Rhea Cardwell became UAA’s first volleyball All-American. After four straight national semifinals appearances and the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Before becoming the sixth coach UAA history, he spent the previ-

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

The Seawolves host their home matches on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing sur-face in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addi-tion of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf volleyball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation.

With members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great

Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 11-year history. Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 62 NCAA Division II top 10 national team finishes in 14 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The 2011-12 aca-demic year was perhaps the conference’s best ever, highlighted by Western Washington’s national title in men’s basketball and Alaska Anchorage’s top-10 NCAA finishes in four sports. Along with newcom-ers Montana State Billings (2007) and Simon Fraser (2010), the GNAC is com-prised of charter members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fair banks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

In the last five years, the GNAC has produced two national team titles (2009 SPU women’s soccer, 2012 WWU men’s basketball), three national runner-up finishes, four NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (including three by UAA), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA. UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

DR. STEVE COBBDirector of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprec-edented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of com-petition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most

memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div. II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference champion-ships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State.

UAA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFFTOM CASEChancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

Tom Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011.

A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated

Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fight-er wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICSNicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country.

UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic.

Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 181 Sea-wolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 16 individual national champions since 1991.

In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2011-12. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field.

Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.

This is UAA!ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 stu-dents through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the Univer sity’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic-tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a mini-mum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGEWith city boundaries that stretch

to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 290,000 people are lucky to call Anchor age home. On a glob-al scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an inter-national air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Hundreds of flights arrive daily at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, shut-tling about 5 million passengers per year through the heart of one of the world’s top tourism destinations. Anchorage is a recreational para-dise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved

the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 15-20 degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfort-able climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 moose, many often seen on UAA’s cam-pus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wol-verines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here while red and king salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six sce-nic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, it is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a vari-ety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. In fact, the Chugach is one of six mountain ranges visible from Anchorage. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach, Anchorage is located in a relatively temperate zone, with a climate that resembles San Francisco in

Alaska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas.

Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses, along with the state’s six other National Parks.
