In my career I have always believed that I was blessed to be in such aprofession (physiotherapy), which to me implied some moralresponsibility to give back to my profession. I have been involved involunteering with various boards or organizations throughout my careerbut certainly without question my favorite has always been the SportMedicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. I therefore am cominginto this position not saying to myself “oh, what have I volunteered for”,but instead what could we or should we accomplish.

I am old enough to recall when the Council was just the Sport MedicineCouncil (no amalgamation with Science yet) when Linda Detta was theExecutive Director. I remember the first 10 sport first aid courses taughton a road trip with Dr. Gulka and myself (along with occasionally otherssuch as Jack Alexander or Chuck Armstrong). On that note I believe it willbe a very rewarding, and no doubt, a great time when we celebrate theCouncils 25th anniversary in 2013 when we have the opportunity tomeet, greet and discuss such old times. This Sport Medicine and Science Council’s increased role with SaskSport Inc. and overall improvement is due in large part to the leadershipprovided by current executive director Mark Henry, as well as alwayshaving an active and engaging board of directors. Mark hasstrengthened the organization further through key hiring of staff, throughhis ability to balance the budgets in the various economic times faced, and by keeping the board involved in all aspects of the Council’s activity. As mentioned, we still maintain a very active and engaged board whichwill be very beneficial to myself and all staff. We have exceptionalmanagerial staff that has helped the Council become one of the moststable and vital members of Sask Sport Inc. However, there is still muchthat we can accomplish. Under Dale Pitura’s capable leadership wedeveloped a strategic planning model that I plan to follow through with,as well as continue to expand the Council’s role within the Sask Sportsystem and Saskatchewan communities as a whole. Marlys Misfeldt’sstrong leadership qualities during her time as President over the pasttwo years is something that I hope to be able to emulate during my termas President. I look forward to working with the board of directors and everyoneinvolved with the Council. Let’s get started!

I hope you all have had a good and joyous summer. The weather has been most cooperative which always brings with it a time to rejoin with family and friends.

The SMSCS Board of Directors does not meet over the summer, however, this does not mean the Council is not busy with ongoing activities and future planning. One large focus is the upcoming Grey Cup Sports Medicine Symposium being held in 2013 as part of the Grey Cup party that will engulf Regina. This is the third time the Council has been involved in organizing the Grey Cup Symposium and the plans are bigger and bolder than ever with international speakers being part of our exciting program. The Council has also tried some other forms of education for its members including organizing two FMS courses, scheduled for this October, as a bit of a different format for the Sports Med Saturdays program. These courses have been very well received by Council members and will be used as a test project to determine if it is a good way for the Council to provide educational opportunities to our valuable members. We have also expanded the funding guidelines for members and consultants that wish to attend outside educational opportunities.

We continue to be involved in numerous Provincial Sport Governing Bodies athlete medical and science programming as well as playing a vital role and being a partner with the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan in providing services to their designated athletes.

The Council has come to the end of our initial three year strategic plan and input is being sought from its members into the future planning of the 2013-2015 planning phase. Please do not hesitate to get involved with this project or any other projects that the Council is involved with.

1. What was your role with the medical team? My role was as a sports massage therapist with the Athletics team. This meant my job was to help the athletes prior to training and competing and to help them recover after.

2. How did you get selected? What was the process? I was selected by Athletics Canada to work with the team. This meant that I only worked with track and field athletes. I was selected because of my years of experience as part of this NSO (National Sports Organization), IST (Integrated Sports Team). The head coach asked if I was available and interested in working with the team. When I said I was available and interested we started planning the placement of the medical staff as needed.

3. Did you stay in the Athletes Village and if so, what was it like? I stayed at a building called NIDO, a students’ residence, 5 minutes by subway from the Olympic Village. Many of the support and medical staff stayed there. It was very nice because we were able to unwind and relax away from the hustle and bustle of the Village.

4. What was it like representing your country? It is always a great honor to represent your country, working with our best athletes. But, as you soon realize, you are there to do a job. Rather

than clients leaving your office and going to do their work, your clients, the athletes, are getting ready to perform in front of millions of people, trying to show how they stack up against the rest of the world. I take my job very seriously, but very much enjoy working with Athletics. As I’ve often said, “If I’m not enjoying what I’m doing, I shouldn’t be here.”

5. You have been involved with other Team Canada medical teams in the past..how did this one differ? At these games I only worked with the Canadian Athletics team. I was not selected to be part of the core medical group, who work on Canadian athletes competing in all sports. I really enjoyed working with one sport at a major games because this allowed me to focus on a specific group of athletes and get to know them better and not feel torn in many different directions.

6. What did a typical day for you consisted of? In London, I usually woke up at 6:30 to 7:00 a.m., went for a run and had breakfast before taking the subway to the clinic. A typical day had me starting work in the clinic at 9:00 a.m. In the afternoon I might have to go to a practice or training session, then back to the clinic to continue working with athletes. I would leave the clinic to go back to the residence between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. On some days I would go to

the warm-up track at the stadium to help prepare athletes for competition or do post competition recovery work.

7. What one major thing really was an eye-opener for you? An eye-opener for these games was how many of the Canadian Olympic sports brought their own medical personnel. This was not surprising, since bringing your own staff usually means that you are bringing people who have worked with the particular sport for the last few years, and know the athletes and their needs.

8. For you personally what were the highs and lows of your time at the Olympics? One high was that my children, Max and Ksenia, showed such interest in these games and were very excited about watching events and telling me about it on Face Time. This made it seem like we were less far apart.

Another highlight was when our men’s 4 x 100 relay team qualified for the final and were bronze medalists for about one minute. A low was when they were disqualified. It was an honor and pleasure to work on these young men. I was able to work with them at the training camp and in London and I knew how hard they worked and how disappointed they were at the outcome. But I’m sure they will be successful in Moscow next summer.
