A motorbike tour challenges your senses in so many ways: the people you meet, different cultures and mentalities, amazing scenery, culinary discoveries, unfamiliar climates and much more. The equipment you use has a major influence on how you experience your trip. For most motorcycle tourers, their equipment is just a means to an end that does more or less what it’s supposed to – it could have been better, or it could have been worse. But Touratech founder Herbert Schwarz, who has been riding motorbikes to all corners of the earth for more than thirty years, has a passion for performance in all things related to motorcycling. Schwarz

has always stayed true to the basic principle: intuitive development based on his own experience. And he’s still a perfectionist.

In pursuit of perfectionIt comes as no surprise, therefore, that he has closely followed the evolution of

textile active clothing with climate membrane from the beginning, and has tested it extensively himself. Schwarz has analysed the development

in detail: sewn-in membrane, membrane as a removable inner jacket,

membrane and outer material combined as a laminate... Each of these solutions

has its plus-sides and drawbacks. If the membrane is sewn in as a liner, the clothing becomes unpleasantly hot to wear above a

certain temperature, and even the best membrane reaches the limits of its breathability. The laminate has the same limitations. Although suits made from this “composite material” are appealingly thin and absorb practically no water even in steady rain, when the weather gets too hot the rider starts to roast! So the removable membrane is the answer, right? Not quite. The outer material on these suits is usually light and cool but it absorbs water when it rains, becoming heavy and cold. Even though the membrane inner jacket keeps you dry, you still feel like there’s a wet sack wrapped around you. Based on this analysis, it would be sensible to choose the best compromise to meet your needs, wouldn’t it? Sensible, perhaps – but for Schwarz this is light years away from the perfect solution!

A strong partnerSchwarz embarked on a mission to develop the perfect motorcycle suit. He already had extensive experience along with plenty of ideas. But a state-of-the-art suit with active materials calls for high-tech textiles. You can’t just run one up on your granny‘s sewing machine. It’s not just that materials such as membranes require complex processing technologies. Well-known suppliers such as W. L. Gore also require precisely defined certification processes before you are even allowed to use their products. This called for a competent partner with in-depth experience in textile engineering – and the Bavarian manufacturer Stadler fit the bill exactly.

The conceptThe renowned clothing manufacturer’s vast wealth of experience was just what Herbert Schwarz needed to implement his ideas. The requirements for the Touratech suit were jointly defined. It was vitally important that the suit allowed maximum ventilation for physical exertion at high temperatures. On the other hand, it needed to be completely wind and waterproof in adverse conditions. The rider’s passive safety was high up on the list too, of course. Features such as variable widths for the perfect fit, adjustable cuffs and zips etc. could be taken for granted in a joint development like this by two expert partners such as Touratech and Stadler.

If you wanted to sum up the basic concept of the Touratech suit in a nutshell, it would be „3 in 1“. In other words, with the Touratech Compañero you get three suits in one.

Adjustment straps on the left and right at waist height allow for variable waist and chest fitting as well as ideal positioning of the back protector. The bottom snap fasteners are rubber-coated to avoid scratching the tank. At the neck, the suit closes with a soft collar. The trousers can be joined with the jacket with a waist zipper to turn it into an all-in-one suit. Braces can be attached to snap fasteners fitted for this purpose.

Generously sized reflecting surfaces have been integrated in the ALL WEATHER ADD as well. The arms can be adjusted in the width and at the cuff. The bottom snap fasteners are rubber-coated to avoid scratching the tank. At the neck, the jacket closes with a soft collar. A crotch belt can be optionally attached. It’s not necessary to repack the contents of the inside trouser pockets. The we-arer simply reaches into the inside trouser pocket through a zipped opening in the outside suit.

COMPAÑERO Summer

The centrepiece of the Touratech Compañero is an airy summer suit. Cordura® AFT is used on the front and back of the jacket and the legs of the trousers to ensure air flow over a wide area. This comfortable synthetic fibre is state-of-the-art in terms of its tear- and wear-resistance properties. But still the most vulnerable areas are reinforced with a layer of Cordura 2000 – the “2000” indicates a particularly tough yarn thickness. Fully equipped with CE-approved protectors, the Touratech Compañero sets the standard. COMPAÑERO ALL WEATHER ADD

The second layer of the Touratech Compañero can be used in colder weather or in the rain: the laminate suit. Perfectly tailored to match the cut of the summer suit, you simply pull it on over the top. It’s a smart move to empty out your pockets first and place your essential items in the pockets of this overgarment. They are spacious, easily accessible and – of course – waterproof! Touratech has chosen the Pro Shell three-layer laminate made by W. L. Gore. In this textile composite material, the inner lining, the top-quality GORE-TEX® breathable membrane and the tough outer layer are bonded into one fabric. This means the laminate is not too bulky, doesn’t bulge, and always fits nice and snugly. Of course the most important properties of the oversuit are that it is wind and waterproof. And since Pro Shell is an active material, the suit is fully breathable.What’s clever with the Touratech Compañero is that the windproof, waterproof membrane forms the outer layer of the clothing system. The airy summer suit keeps an air cushion inside that acts as a thermal lining. An additional insulating layer such as fleece underwear is only needed in extremely cold weather. “In the spring of 2011 I worked on the film „Coast to Coast – across Afri-

ca“ and crossed from Namibia to Kenya. Together with two friends from

France we followed the footsteps of the Germans in Black Africa. I wore

a brandnew Compañero for over two months and roughly 12,000 kilome-

tres, which, of course, had to prove itself under the African sun and espe-

cially during the rainy period. Important things first: the Compañero proved to

be a true mate and never left me standing in the rain. It remained water-proof, even

during a torrential rain lasting two hours. The summer jacket was always well ventilated on hot

days and my outbreaks of sweat remained well within limits compared to my accompanying

French friends. From 20°C and above it pays to take off the outer jacket. The protectors were

up to the job at all times. Despite a few minor falls I had no injuries. In particular, the broad
