Report from the Board of Directors

It is my pleasure to present our annual report for 2012-2013, a year that was welcomed by remarkable growth, change and accomplishments. As we entered our thirteenth year, the Board of Directors recognized where we were in our own life-cycle. Just as people, products, markets, even societies have life-cycles, so do organizations. We have grown up!

Leadership Saskatoon recognizes that our evolution and success would never have been possible without our incredible and dedicated volunteers, our generous and engaged sponsors, our talented and enthusiastic staff and our supportive and reputable community partners.

As Board Chair and a program alumna, I am humbled to serve such an incredible organization. As you read through the following pages you will see what I mean. Leadership Saskatoon has actualized the dreams and ideas of our visionaries - to inspire, and further develop community leaders so that together we build an even better Saskatoon. More than 300 dynamic, diverse and principled leaders have progressed through the program. Many of our alumni continue to provide bold and responsible leadership in our community.

Amy McNeil, Chair of the Board

Community Relations ReportDoug Finnie, Director Community Relations

I enjoy working with Leadership Saskatoon as Director Community Relations. My experience in the financial services industry and community organizations enables me to promote Leadership Saskatoon and its values to organizations and businesses in Saskatoon.

My prime areas of responsibility are to:• Secure candidates for the program each year, and• Implement a funding program to ensure the organization is self-sustaining.I am pleased to report success in achieving both goals.

We had 28 participants complete the 2012-13 program. Highlights of the June graduation were an address by His Worship Mayor Atchison and an entertaining, inspirational valedictory address by Lori Hislop of SaskTel.

We will have a new record of 30 candidates for the 2013-14 program with a short wait list for next year! We continue to achieve a good balance of high quality candidates with business, non-profit and public sector backgrounds, as well as growth in the number of First Nations candidates in the program.

Our Sponsorship/Partnership Program receives excellent support. More than twenty generous community minded organizations will again be supporting Leadership Saskatoon in 2013-14. Please visit www.leadershipsaskatoon.com/sponsors to view our current sponsors and partners. We are grateful to all our supporters and volunteers for their commitment to Leadership Saskatoon.

Our program has been providing Community Leadership Development since 2000. It is gratifying to see that Leadership Saskatoon is recognized as making an important contribution to ongoing social development in Saskatoon.

"A leader leads by example, whether he

intends to or not." - Steve Jobs

"As we look ahead into the next

century, leaders will be those who empower others."

- Bill Gates

The class this year was an eager group of learners who really took advantage of the readings sent out monthly in the “InBetween” e-mail and learning from all of our facilitators and guest speakers.

Our program curriculum is strong and only a few “tweaks” were suggested the previous year at the program committee planning day. This year we introduced a new reflective practice exercise called “reflect on the first” based on the “1000 marbles” metaphor. Participants were e-mailed on the first of each month and asked to reflect for 1000 seconds on the questions or exercises. Reflective practice is an opportunity for a leaders to stop and review how their leadership journey is going, review milestones and make plans for the upcoming month.

We continue to have a dedicated group of facilitators who donate their time and talent year after year. Our sponsorship speakers this year shared their personal leadership journeys providing our participants with insight into how some of the senior leaders in our city have grown as leaders over the years and how they value our vibrant community. We also enjoyed the number of alumni that were able to visit the participants via the alumni panel at opening retreat, as facilitators and as sponsorship speakers. It is becoming evident how much our alumni class has grown!

One goal I set this past year was to work on succession planning regarding facilitators, content and volunteers. I have developed a list of facilitators and learning team coaches should any of our long-time volunteer facilitators or coaches become unavailable. Our program committee continues to scan the emerging leadership topics to assist us in deciding what should be considered at our next planning day.

Mentorship ReportRick Rowley, Mentor Sub-Committee Chair

The mentorship component has been an integral part of the Leadership Saskatoon program since 2001. The mentorship portion of the program matches each new participant (mentoree) with a community leader (mentor), with the expectation that they will meet at least four times during the program. The mentorship component gives the participants an opportunity to get a picture of the realities, opportunities and challenges in our community with the benefit of the experience the mentor brings.

Since the mentorship component has been added to the Leadership Saskatoon program, 122 community leaders have volunteered as mentors. Some have been mentors for

years and they put a reputation - “a face” - and a presence to the title of community leader. We are very appreciative that they are able to share their insights and knowledge and assist in the growth of our future community leaders. The mentor relationship and experience has been valued by both the participants and the mentors and is a unique aspect to the success of Leadership Saskatoon.

The Mentor Sub-Committee is responsible for gathering and reviewing background information on both the participants and prospective mentors; matching the participants and mentors as best as we can; assigning a member of the Mentor Sub-Committee to each participant and mentor; and supporting and assisting the mentorship process. We are constantly looking at ways and ideas to improve the process and make the matches even better.

We want to thank all the Saskatoon leaders who have served as mentors for Leadership Saskatoon. We appreciate the time, energy and commitment to the future of our community.

If anyone would like to put their name forward as a mentor for the class of 2014 or would be interested in serving on the Leadership Saskatoon Mentor Sub-Committee, please contact me at [email protected].

Administration ReportRenee Greene, Administrative Services Coordinator

I joined the Leadership Saskatoon team in September 2013, so while I didn’t experience the 2012-2013 year first hand, I have the benefit of seeing the successes the organization faced.

Financially, Leadership Saskatoon experienced positive growth in 2012-2013, thanks in large part to the success of Doug Finnie in recruitment and sponsorship. Based on the volume of requests I receive from newcomers looking to join the program, this success will continue. Several participants were able to benefit through tuition bursaries. This wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of our sponsors.

Leadership Saskatoon was able to enjoy subsidized office space once again, courtesy of Affinity Credit Union. As Affinity moves onto their new Campus, we will move our office, but still enjoy their generosity in catering and venue space for several challenge days. Thank you to all those who provided us space for meetings and challenge days - this type of support allows us to focus our finances on the “meat” of the program!

The program continued to thrive under the direction of Shannon Floer, and the many volunteer facilitators, sponsor & partner speakers and panel members. Many participants underwent positive leadership transformations, including the transition from perceived ‘prisoners’ of the program to advocates. Our ever growing alumni consistently leaves the program with much appreciation for their leadership journey.

We continued to provide Sandbox Lunch ‘n’ Learns to a variety of participants. These committed learners benefited from the work of our staff and volunteers as well as the generosity of Saskatchewan Abilities Council who provided us space.

I look forward to an exciting year ahead in 2013-2014. The staff, board and volunteers have been exceptional in assisting me during my transition into this position. The success of the program thus far suggests a bright future for Leadership Saskatoon and its alumni!
