Dear Friends,For over two decades, Sacred Music in a Sacred Space has served as one of New York City’s great cultural institutions. Since the inception of the series, the transcendent beauty of music paired with the warmth and opulent splendor of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola has delighted and inspired thousands, lifting hearts and opening minds as only great art can, guiding us from the limits of mundane existence into fuller communion with ourselves, each other and the world.
The tradition continues in 2012-2013, as we begin with the resplendent glory and unbounded joy of My Soul Rejoices, featuring Bach’s Magnifi cat and Mozart’s Solemn Vespers. On December 2, we invite you to join us for Advent Lessons and Carols, a contemplative and introspective beginning to the holiday season. The following two Sundays, the combined Choirs and Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola present GLORIA!, our annual Christmas Concert, hailed by The New York Times as “part of the essence of Christmas in New York.”
In February, we are proud to hostspecial guest artists Pomerium in their program Timor et Tremor:Renaissance Motets for Lent. As winter turns to spring in May, the Choir of St. Ignatius turns to the mysteries of love and creation, as they offer The Voice of My Beloved, an a cappella concert of music by
Lassus, Howells, Willan and Britten, drawing on texts from the Song of Songs and traditional Marian hymns. Join us for a Mother’s Day treat, as soloists and friends of the Choir of St. Ignatius gather to present Sacred Songs and Arias. Our choral season concludes with Rejoice in the Lord!, our annual music ministry celebration, featuring the combined Choirs of St. Ignatius Loyola.
This year, the acclaimed N. P. Mander Organ turns 20! I am honored to play the opening recital of the season on September 16. Our esteemed and beloved Nancianne Parrella will again be joined by dear friends Jorge Ávila, Tori Drake and Arthur Fiacco in ORGAN PLUS! on March 10. In addition, we are proud to host internationally renowned concert artists Thomas Murray and Nigel Potts, on October 28 and February 3, respectively. And the 20th Anniversary Season of the Mander Organ would not be complete without a proper birthday celebration. On April 28, please join Nancianne and me, with special guests Reneé Anne Louprette, Andrew Henderson and Kent Tritle, as we join forces to put the Mander through its paces. This will prove to be an unforgettable afternoon, fi lled with great music and camaraderie.
Great art is indeed an inspiration. It is also an investment—in our culture, our civilization and our spiritual heritage. Will you join us in making this investment? You’ve heard it before, but it bears repetition: ticket receipts take care of less than half of our operating expenses. Bringing Sacred Music in Sacred Space to the community is a costly endeavor, and we need your help. Will you consider becoming a Friend of Sacred Music? If you already are, we thank you and ask for your continued generosity. We believe wholeheartedly in the ability of music to yield dividends that far surpass the limits of our imagination, and to create a more just, humane and beautiful world for generations to come.
Sincerely,
K. Scott WarrenArtistic Director
