This season will have a different feel to it for the men’s hockey team for more than one reason. After dominating both the regular season and playoffs in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) for almost the entire last half decade, the Bulldogs lost a tough overtime playoff game that remains the team’s only blemish. The team is looking to return to the form that took them to the national championship game two seasons ago, as well as add to one of college hockey’s best starting program records over its first five years at 122-18-3.

“Last season, we fell short of one of our goals (Harris Cup) and by losing that we obviously didn’t get to the national tournament,” said Bulldogs’ head coach and 2012 MCHA Coach of the Year Ron Fogarty.

After claiming their fifth consecutive MCHA regular season title and looking to add a fifth consecutive Harris Cup- as playoff champion, the team suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) ending last year on a sour note with a 20-6-1 overall record and 17-2-1 MCHA record. Although it was the team’s only loss in the calendar year, the coaching staff felt it needed to make some changes designed to make the team better defensively.

Fogarty added, “We reassessed our shortcomings throughout the summer and established new systems in the hopes that we get back to the national tournament. We’ve (coaching staff) done a good job over the past few weeks heading into our first game, making sure everyone’s on the same page and that the new systems have become second-nature prior to playing our first game.”

Up front, the team returns two of the MCHA’s best- First-Team All-American and MCHA Player of the Year Zach Graham (15-27-42) and Josh Cousineau (11-20-31).

“Our defense will have the most new faces and we’ll obviously need someone to contribute offensively from a defensive position with the loss of First-Team All-American Chris Stansik,” said Fogarty.

When asked about the new players for this year’s squad, Fogarty said this, “The new defensive players will be Sam Nyberg, who sat out last year. Two players coming from juniors that should have an impact are Chris Leone and Adam Davies. Micki Mihailovich, a division one transfer who has a lot of USHL experience should help make our defense stronger this year. Up front, Pat George will add more of a physical presence and Shaquille Merasty will have an opportunity to contribute offensively right away on the top couple lines and on the power play.”

The Bulldogs’ goaltenders- Scott Shackell and James Hamby, finished second and third in the league in goals-against average, respectively, last season.

“We have the best goaltending tandem in the MCHA. Both are more than capable of being a starting goaltender. Whoever has the hot hand is going to play. It’s a nice problem to have,” said Fogarty.

The Bulldogs are looking for some improvement in their specialty teams and may make some changes.

“We want to have a very strong power play to keep teams from being more aggressive than they want to be. Opponents will be more reluctant to take penalties and be physical, especially if we can get our power play to where it’s been in the past- hovering around 30 percent,” said Fogarty.

“In the past, we’ve struggled out of the gate with our penalty killing percentage being pretty low, but it will have to be strong. We’re going to rely on a couple of seniors and juniors to solidify that right off the bat- and making that percentage very good.”

“In the past, certain players had single roles when it came to

specialty teams, but this year we’re going to mix it up. This year, instead of just using defensive players on the penalty kill, we might put our top offensive guys out there just to add more of an offensive threat. We probably have three or four guys who can play both. I think Josh Ranalli has been great for us on the penalty kill, and he’s one of those guys we want to interchange with our power play. Graham and Cousineau are two others that will see time at both,” stated Fogarty.

Although the Bulldogs were once again picked to finish first in the MCHA coaches pre-season poll, Coach Fogarty forecasts some of the same things as last year, as well as some changes for this season’s MCHA and the Bulldogs’ schedule.

“Our conference has improved by leaps and bounds from when we started. Our league is strong with teams winning their non-conference games. I think it’s going to be the usual suspects with Milwaukee, Lawrence, Marian and I think Concordia will be greatly improved. I’m looking forward to playing Alabama-Huntsville. It’s a chance to play a D-I team, although we’ve played the U.S. and Czech national programs in the past. It’s a little different than your traditional D-III game that enhances our schedule for the players and fans.”

Of the team’s 25 games, 20 games will be conference games. The team will play MSOE, Lake Forest and Concordia four times each, twice at home and twice on the road. Of the remaining conference games, the team will face Marian (Jan. 18 & 19) and Finlandia (Feb. 15 & 16) twice each at home after the new year, and Northland (Nov. 2 & 3) and Lake Forest (Nov. 16 & 17) twice each in the team’s first four road games.

Of the non-conference games, only the Alabama-Huntsville game is on the road (Jan. 4). The team’s other four non-conference games will be at home facing St. Mary’s (Nov. 24), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (Dec. 29 & 30), and Geneseo State (Jan. 8).

In the pairs of games that are home-and-home, Adrian will face MSOE at home Nov. 9 & 10, and away Jan. 25 & 26. The Bulldogs get Lake Forest at home on Feb. 2 & 3, and face them on the road Nov. 16 & 17. The last home-and-home pairing is with Concordia- going there on Feb. 8 & 9, and playing them at home Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st.

The team opens the season on the road at Northland, Friday Nov. 2nd; and its home opener will be Nov. 9th against MSOE.

Josh Cousineau ranked second on the team with 31 points last season. Entering 2012-13 he has 48 career points in 47 games with 17 goals.

Ron Fogarty begins his sixth season behind the bench as the architect of the successful men’s hockey program at Adrian College. The Bulldogs needed a leader to begin a program and found the right man in Fogarty.

In 2011-12, the Bulldogs captured their fifth straight Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season title in their fifth year of existance as a program. The team finished 20-6-1 marking every season that the Bulldogs have reached the 20-win plateau. They were 17-2-1 in the MCHA and defeated MSOE by two points in the standings. The Bulldogs are now 94-4-2 in the MCHA since joining the league in regular season play with four Harris Cup titles. Adrian had the sixth-highest scoring offense in NCAA Division III averaging 4.37 goals per game. They also had the 10th-best power play nationally- scoring on 25.8 percent of their chances. Fogarty was also named MCHA Coach of the Year for the second time in five seasons. He helped guide Chris Stansik and Zach Graham to West Region All-American honors.

In 2010-11, the Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 25-4-1 and advanced to the NCAA National Championship game. The national runner-up team finish was the best in the history of Adrian College. Fogarty also guided the team to its fourth straight MCHA regular season and Harris Cup titles and second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The team finished second in the final USCHO Division III Poll which was the highest ranking in school and MCHA history. The Bulldogs defeated Elmira and Oswego State en route to the national title contest. Adrian fell just short 4-3 to St. Norbert College at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Bulldogs once again led the nation in scoring offense (4.97 gpg) for the fourth consecutive year and led Division III in scoring margin (2.73 gpg).

In 2009-10, the Bulldogs posted a record of 24-4 (20-0 MCHA) and won their third straight Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season and Harris Cup titles. The automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Harris Cup allowed Adrian to play their first tournament game at St. Norbert (Wis.). The Bulldogs fell 4-3 to the Green Knights nearly rallying from a 4-1 deficit. The team has compiled a 77-8-1 record under his watch, which is the best three-year beginning in NCAA Division III history. Last season marked the third straight year that Adrian led NCAA Division III in scoring (6.71 gpg). In addition, they led Division III in scoring margin (4.25) and penalty killing (90.5 percent) and ranked second on the power play (29.9 percent). The team finished the season ranked 10th in the USCHO.com national poll.

Adrian posted a 27-1-1 record in 2008-09 while going a perfect 20-0 in the MCHA, which had never been done before in league history. The team once again was the top scoring team in Division III averaging 6.52 goals per game. In addition, the

team ranked second in scoring defense allowing 1.69 goals per game. The Bulldogs led the nation in penalty minutes per game (26.6) and also had the best power play (35.9 percent). AC had the fourth-best penalty kill (88.3 percent) and had the most wins in Division III. At the conclusion of the season, Adrian was ranked seventh in the USCHO.com national poll.

The Bulldogs had unprecedented success in 2007-08 as they set an NCAA single-season record for wins by a first-year program (26-3). Adrian College captured the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season and tournament titles in convincing fashion. The Bulldogs concluded the regular season with a 19-1 conference record which was nine points better than second place Marian. In the conference tournament, held in Milwaukee, the Bulldogs needed overtime in the championship game against a pesky Finlandia squad but survived for the 1-0 win. Along the way, the Bulldogs were ranked as high as eighth in the national polls and set numerous statistical records. Adrian set 17 conference records in 2007-08 and ranked first in Division III in scoring offense (7.59 goals per game), scoring margin (5.34 goals per game), and power play percentage (.357).

Prior to Adrian College, Fogarty served as assistant coach at Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in the Division I CCHA Conference and served as the top assistant coach at Clarkson University (New York).

Fogarty was a four-year member of the Colgate ice hockey team before graduating in 1995. He was named to the 1992 ECAC All-Rookie team and received the Colgate Coaches’ Award in 1994. He participated in the Senior All-Star game following his senior season and upon graduation ranked 20th on the Red Raiders’ all-time scoring list with 141 points. He remained at Colgate for three years as a member of the coaching staff.

A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Fogarty played professional hockey for the Memphis Riverkings of the Central Hockey League during the 1995-96 season. He was voted to the All-Rookie team and was honored with the team’s Mr. Hustle Award.

Fogarty gained valuable coaching and recruiting experience from 1991-93 when he worked with the Bluewater Sharks (Bantam) of the Summer AAA. During his tenure, the Sharks compiled a 57-19-3 record and Fogarty was named the Coach of the Year after just one season.

Fogarty and his wife, Monica, reside in Adrian and have three children, Jordan, Rachel and Emma.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Our programs integrate theoretical and practical learning in distinctive and challenging ways.

It’s not about winning championships... but let’s face it, that is what we do here. We throw winning passes, hit home runs, score hat-tricks, and serve up wins in nearly every sport on campus. Maybe it’s because our athletes are strong — both in their sports and in their classes. The average GPA for our student athlete is above a 3.0, and with over 50% of our student body involved in some form of athletic activity, that says something. Actually, it says a lot.

It fuels champions.

Visit adrianbulldogs.com for more information

We value a winning tradition on and off the court, the field, the ice or wherever our students spend their training time.

ARRINGTON ICE ARENAArrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated

and opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey teams, ACHA women’s hockey team and the synchronized skating team.

The arena is named after Dr. Robyn Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Col. Harold Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can use the facility for recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities.

The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chair-back seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. For more information about Arrington Ice Arena, visit the website at (www.arringtonicearena.com).

Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III. The arena has hosted such events as a Detroit Red Wing Alumni Game and the last four MCHA Harris Cups. In addition, Arrington Ice Arena has played host to the 2010 and 2011 ACHA Division I All-Star Game.
