head coach

John goodrIdge

The 2012-13 season marks the 12th season for John Goodridge as a member of the track & field and cross country staffs at Eastern Michigan University. The veteran coach has enjoyed an outstanding coaching career, with EMU’s Mid-American Conference champion-ships in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Goodridge has coached conference cross country champion-ship teams in the MAC, Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences.

Since arriving at Eastern Michigan in 2001 Goodridge has coached 12 track & field All-Americans including two NCAA National Track and Field Champions (Boaz Cheboiywo in the 10,000 meters and Jordan Desilets in the 3,000 meter steeplechase) as well

as 64 individual MAC Track and Field/Cross Country Champions. Goodridge has also coached six EMU school-record performances, most recently the indoor distance medley relay in 2009 which placed fifth in the NCAA National Championships.

Five EMU tracksters have broken the magical sub 4:00 mile mark of which Goodridge has coached three (Cheboiywo, Desilets and Gavin Thompson) along with Paul McMullen and Ben Reese coached by EMU Athletic Hall of Famer Coach Bob Parks.

Prior to his arrival at EMU, Goodridge was the head track and field coach at Wake Forest University for 15 years (1984-1999) where he

Goodridge coached Wake Forest to its highest ever Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) finishes in cross country (first) and track & field (second) and its highest ever national finishes in cross country (third) and track & field (eighth). At Wake Forest he coached 14 individual ACC Champions and seven All-Americans. He coached Wake Forest to its first ever ACC cross country championship, first ever individual champion, first All-Americans in track and field and cross country and first team NCAA cross country appearance and highest ever finish in school history (third). His Wake Forest cross country teams finished first or second in the ACC for 10 consecutive years,

winning four titles and making seven NCAA appearances. During his long and distinguished coaching career Goodridge has coached 20 athletes including five EMU athletes (Desilets, DuBois, Naughton, Nowitzke, Perrin) who have represented the United States in international competition including the Olympics, World Track and Field Championships, World Cross Country Championships and Pan American Games as well as three EMU athletes (Cheboiywo, Karanja, Thompson) who have represented Canada, Kenya and Great Britain in international competition including the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, European Championships and Francophone Games. assisTanT COaCh sTeve ManzThe 2012-13 season marks the second season for Steve Manz as an assistant coach with the Eastern Michigan University men’s track and field team. He will coach the shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, and javelin throwing events as well as the combined events.

Manz, a successful collegiate and professional athlete, as well as an accomplished coach, spent much of his early career juggling the duties of an athlete and a

coach. His college career was highlighted by four school records, three All-American awards, multiple All-Academic awards, and the 2004 Big Ten Medal of Honor award. Manz also competed post-collegiately for five years, spending summers competing in Europe and South America, making two Olympic Trials, one Olympic Trials final, and finishing with a best shot put throw of 66’7, the farthest by any born and raised Michigander all-time.

In high school, Manz was a standout at Ogemaw Heights High School in West Branch, MI, where he brought home two state titles, the 1999 Discus State Championship (176’) and the 1997 Football State Championship.

Manz is entering his eighth year of coaching. While at the Univer-sity of Findlay, Manz coached his athletes to 13 NCAA provisional qualifying marks, three NCAA automatic qualifying marks, and two All-American awards. His best athlete, Derrick Vicars, went on to become the 2010 Division II National Champion in the discus. Prior to coaching at Findlay, Manz spent two years training for the 2008 Olympic Trials while assisting four-time Olympian Jud Logan. From 2005-2007, Manz was the throws coach at McNeese State University in Lousiana, working under current Olympic Training Center coach Ty Sevin. His athletes broke school records in all but two of the throwing events with multiple athletes qualifying for the post-season.

“I truly believe that Steve Manz is one of the very best young and promising throws coaches in the country,” said Head Coach John Goodridge of Manz.

Manz earned a degree in Zoology from Michigan State University in 2004. He currently resides in Ypsilanti, Mich.

track and field team. He will coach sprints, hurdles, horizontal jumps, and high jump.

“I’ve known Sterling since he was an athlete at EMU and was impressed with his competitiveness in training and competition. I admire his efforts to develop professionally as he has been suc-cessful as a head high school coach, Division III assistant coach and most recently as a Division I assistant coach at the University of Illinois,” commented EMU Head Track and Field Coach John Goodridge of Roberts.

Roberts graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2003 where he was a four-year varsity track student-athlete. He com-peted as a sprinter and hurdler who specialized in the 400-meter hurdles. Roberts was a two-time All-MAC award winner, while

he also was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that won a MAC Championship in 2002. He later earned his master’s degree from Defiance in 2011.

Most recently, Roberts worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Illinois where he assisted with the development and modification of the training program for male sprinters, hur-dlers, and jumpers. He coached four different NCAA Preliminary Qualifiers.

Prior to his year at Illinois, Roberts was an assistant coach at Defiance College from 2009-11. While at Defiance, he was charged with recruitment of male/female jumpers, hurdlers, and sprinters, including assisting in establishing a database for coordinating recruiting among all coaches. He also coached an NCAA Division III national qualifier in the pole vault, high jump, and decathlon.

Roberts also has coached at the high school level as he was the head coach of the Wakefield High School track and field programs in Raleigh, N.C. While at Wakefield, he coached five high school All-Americans including the Nike Indoor National 200 meter Champion.

In his 12th season working with the Eastern Michigan Univer-sity men’s track and field team, Head Coach John Goodridge and his staff are looking to record another successful season for the Eagles. EMU is returning a plethora of talent as well as a large group of freshmen that will provide an immediate impact in multiple areas for the Eagles.

SPRINTS

Senior Jay Saunders, junior Chris Scott, and sophomore Cameron Bolton are a versatile sprint group with range from the 100 meters to 400 meters. The trio was part of a victourious 4x100-meter relay team at the Len Paddock Invitational posting a time of 41.0 seconds. With the fourth member of that relay team gone, five incoming freshman (Wayne Blanchard, Jason Ervin, Amonta Glasper, Matthew Williams and Richard Williams) look to compete for that final spot. Both Saunders and Bolton posted wins and runner-up finishes in races a year ago. Saunders took first in the 200-meter dash in the season’s opening meet, the GVSU Open, while Bolton was victorious in the 200-meter dash at three other events throughout the season.

HURDLES

A pair of juniors, Fontaine Holland and Levi Selvig return to lead the Eagles in hurdles this year. Selvig will headline the 60-meter hurdles indoors and 110-meter hurdles outdoors while Holland will lead the squad in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman hurdlers Jeff Elam, Bryce Lindsey, Rowan Shaw, Elijah Simkins and Tyler Wagner will have an impact right away joining these two returning athletes.

MIDDLE DISTANCES

Junior Josh George will look to lead the pack of mid-distance runners this season. George is coming off a pair of impressive MAC Championship finishes in the 800-meter run; the junior was runner-up at the MAC Indoor Championships with a time of 1:52.84 and won the MAC Outdoor Championships with a time of 1:51.84. He also took first in the 800-meter run at the Jesse Owens Classic. George will also be joined by sophomore Nick Twining to lead five incoming freshman (Khalil Boussi, Scott Bradley, Tyler Ross, Mason Waynes and Jordan West joining the middle distance squad.

Chabola also added a runner-up finish at the Al Owens Classic.

LONG DISTANCES

NCAA National Championship qualifier and senior Terefe Ejigu will lead a loaded pack of talented long distance runners. In 2012, he won seven races including four MAC Championships Before win-ning the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races at the MAC Outdoor Championships, Ejigu set a MAC record at the Indoor Champion-ships, running the 5,000-meter race in 14:14.06. In that one-mile run, teammate Grzegorz Kalinowski finished in a close second behind Ejigu with a time of 4:08.81. Harry Dixon, Ian Hancke, Warren Witchell, Cameron Trinh and James Hughes all return as well to compete for the Eagles. Willy Fink, Austin Lane, William Trice and Brandon Wynsma are all freshman who will run distance races for EMU this season.

HORIZONTAL JUMPS Improving from his runner-up finish in the triple jump at the MAC Championships last year, junior Donald Scott won the title in 2012. Not only did Scott win the MAC and two other meets, but he also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump, finishing third. For long jump and high jump, five freshman (Aaron Benton, Jacob Janke, James O’ Shea, Rowan Shaw, Zachary Waldron) will look to make an impact immediately for EMU.

POLE VAULT

Redshirt-senior Joe Tesner, junior Max Babits and sophomore Dylan Stites lead the Eagle vaulters this season. Tesner returns after finishing in the top-three six times last season. Babits placed in the top-five at four meets last year including two runner-up fin-ishes. Freshman vaulters Colton Arnett, Jacob Janke and Rocky Schilke, round out the EMU squad.

THROWS

Junior Teron Turner and sophomore Keith WIlliams return to lead the Green and White in throws. Turner had four top-five fin-ishes in the weight throw while Williams made his major impact in the shot put, posting three top-five finishes. Five incoming freshman (Alex Carpenter, Julius Collier, Travis Harris, Anthony Jones, Ryan McNulty) will try to get points for the Eagles this year in throws.

MULTIS

Redshirt-sophomore David Papenhagen led Eastern in the hep-tathlon and decathlon last season. Papenhagen posted a season-best 5939 at the Hillsdale Gina Relays last year, good enough for a fifth-place finish.

EMU’s undergraduate population is approximately 65 percent white; 21 percent black; 2 percent international; 2.5 percent Asian-American; 2 percent Hispanic, 0.5 percent Native-American, and 7 percent not answered (i.e. elected not to respond to this inquiry). Eastern Michigan offers a number of special academic programs to help students succeed. These include the Honors College; the Holman Success Center; distance learning; accelerated format programs; online, weekend and evening programs and courses; American Humanics certification; Study Abroad Tours; a specialized master’s degree program for corporations offered onsite; a double master’s degree; online technologies for education and training. With more than 200 academic and social organizations, an extensive intramural sports program, 21 NCAA Division I-A sports and numerous cultural activities from which to choose, EMU students have diverse opportunities to become involved in campus life. Students’ on-campus housing choices range from traditional dormitory-style rooms to apartments and include living/learning center options.

Where We’re Located Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, about 10 miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic, research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe. EMU’s 800 plus-acre campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jog-ging trails and has 122 buildings throughout the academic and athletic campuses. Eagle Crest – Eastern Michigan’s conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake.Ypsilanti plays a leading role in industry and education. The city and the University have forged close ties that have lasted more than 160 years.

What Makes Us Unique In 1849, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclusive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education; and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a Uni-versity, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years, EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world. The University currently serves 23,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions. In all, more than 200 majors, minors and concentrations are delivered through the University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business; Educa-tion; Health and Human Services; Technology, and its graduate school. Eastern Michigan’s exceptional faculty, students and alumni include CEOs from major businesses; a National Student Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year, numerous Fulbright Scholars and Milken Family Foundation National Educators award winners; and several Michigan Teachers of the Year. EMU is regularly recognized by national publications for its excellence, diversity, and commitment to applied education.

Faculty/Staff Eastern Michigan University employs nearly 700 full-time faculty and 1,000 staff members. Ninety-four percent of EMU professors have doctoral de-grees or terminal degrees in their field. The student to faculty ratio is 19:1. Faculty work closely with students, and many involve students in their research. Recently, the University celebrated its 30th annual Undergraduate Symposium; a benchmark program for undergradu-ate research.

Community Outreach Eastern Michigan is making an impact nationally by channeling its academic research as a means of solving real-world problems. EMU currently has 14 research institutes and centers that focus on com-munity building and civic engagement, quality, com-munity and regional development, small business development, geospatial education, textiles, export assistance and product development. EMU is well known for merging theory and practice for the benefit of the community. Applied research leads to new knowledge, new jobs and new business. Annually, the university receives about $15 million in revenues for sponsored research and community service activities.

The Alumni Association Representing more than 142,000 alumni and friends, the Alumni Association sponsors social and service-related programs for more than 20 geographically-based and special-interest alumni chapters.

EMU’s Economic Impact Since its founding in 1849, Eastern Michigan has provided quality services to the residents of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, the State of Michigan and other states and nations. EMU’s total impact on the Michigan economy of an estimated $3.7 billion annually reflects a return of more than $42 for each dollar received from the state. The University’s total impact on the Michigan economy results in a contribution of $166 million in state tax revenue. Thus, EMU’s impact on state government tax revenue is $1.87 in taxes for each dollar received from the state.

Mission Statement Eastern Michigan University is com-mitted to excellence in teaching through traditional and innovative approaches, the extension of knowledge through basic and applied research, and creative and artistic expression. Building on a proud tradition of na-tional leadership in the preparation of teach-ers, we maximize educational opportunities and personal and professional growth for students from diverse backgrounds through an array of baccalaureate, master’s and doc-

toral programs. We strive to provide a student-focused learning environment that enhances the lives of students and positively impacts the community. We extend our commitment beyond the campus boundaries to the wider community through service initiatives, and public and private partnerships of mutual interest addressing local, regional, national and international opportunities and challenges.

Our History Founded in 1849, when the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal School was designated by the state legislature as the first institution to educate teachers to serve the public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. A campus that today comprises more than 800 acres was once a four-acre plot with one building and two programs of study – a classical course and an English Course. The school’s name changed several times – to Michigan State Normal College in 1899; to Eastern Michigan College in 1956; and finally to Eastern Michigan University in 1959. During its first 100 years, the institution certified thousands of teachers and developed the broad-based curricula that ultimately prepared it for university status. Within that new university, three colleges emerged: Education, Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School. The University has since expanded three more times; adding the College of Business in 1964, the College of Health and Human Services in 1975 and the College of Technology in 1980. More recently Eastern Michigan has developed Extended Programs and numerous community-focused institutes. The University has enhanced its learning environment through structural initiatives during the past several years. Recent construction includes the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998), the Convocation Center (1998), the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998), the John W. Porter College of Education Building (1999), the Everett L. Marshall College of Health and Human Services Building (2000), the Vil-lage residence hall (2001), University House (2003), new Student Center (2006), and the new Science Complex (2010).

The City of Ypsilanti Ypsilanti is a city in Washtenaw County with a population of 22,362. Originally a trading post established in 1809 by Gabriel Godfroy, a French-Canadian fur trader from Montreal, a permanent settlement was established on the east side of the Huron River in 1823 by Major Thomas Woodruff. It was incorporated into the Territory of Michigan as the village Woodruff’s Grove. A separate com-munity a short distance away on the west side of the river was established in 1825 under the name “Ypsilanti”, after Demetrius Ypsilanti, a hero in the Greek War of Independence. Woodruff’s Grove changed its name to Ypsilanti in 1829, and the two communities eventually merged. Henry Ford and the automotive industry came to Ypsilanti in the 1930s and beautiful Ford Lake was created to generate hydroelectric power for the manufacturing plants. During World War II, Ypsilanti became home to the Willow Run Bomber Plant, a factory that would employ 100,000 work-ers.

President Susan Martin

Entering her fifth year as the presi-dent of Eastern Michigan University, Dr. Susan W. Martin has made a sig-nificant impact on the campus in her short time in Ypsilanti. Named the 22nd president of EMU May 14, 2008, she is the first female president in EMU’s 162-year history. Martin officially took office July 7, 2008. Since joining EMU she has led the institution in two consecutive years of enrollment growth, kept tuition, room and board at 0% increase for 2010-11, enhanced the quality of education by investing in hiring new faculty, and en-hanced the living and learning facilities by making $195M in capital improve-ments to the campus. “I am thrilled to be chosen for the honor of leading this great University, which has a strong history of excellent education and a bright future,” said Martin. During her inaugural address Martin set fourth an ambitious vision for the university. The goals included build-

ing on the pillars of academic excellence, refreshing alumni relationships, comprehensive fundraising and earning the public’s trust. Under Martin’s guid-ance in 2008, EMU was again recognized as a “Best Midwestern College” by The Princeton Review for the sixth straight year. The mark of an exceptional athletics program is the progress that is made each year. And under the leadership of athletics direc-tor Dr. Derrick Gragg, the Eastern Michigan University department of athletics has turned in successful campaigns in each of his first five years at the helm. During Gragg’s first year at EMU in 2006-07, the department set a school and Mid-American Conference record by capturing a remarkable eight team conference titles, adding a league post-season crown and recording two runner-up finishes. The MAC-record eight team championships eclipsed the mark of six held jointly by Central Michigan University (2003-04) and Western Michigan University (1984-85). In 2007-08, Gragg’s second as athletics direc-tor, EMU followed up the record-breaking eight championships in 2006-07 with four league regular-season titles and one MAC Tournament crown and the Eagles secured the Reese Trophy which is awarded annually to the top overall men’s athletics program in the league. Eastern had won the prestigious Reese Trophy three previous times (1987-88, 1990-91 and 1995-96). Gragg was nationally recognized for his lead-ership in 2008-09, earning the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Administrator of the Year Award. He received the award at the BCA National Convention and Expo Awards Banquet, May 29, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind. The Eagles won a pair of MAC titles during the 2008-09 campaign in men’s cross country and swimming, while finishing as the runner-up in men’s golf, men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, women’s golf and women’s soccer en

route to a second place finish in the Reese Tro-phy standings. Eastern continued to excel in 2009-10 with a trio of MAC team titles, 30 individual MAC Cham-pionships and 60 student-athletes named to the All-MAC teams. Gragg also helped spearhead the construction of EMU’s $3.9 million multi-purpose indoor athletic practice facility located near the north end of Rynearson Stadium. The 2010-11 season proved to be another record-setting campaign for EMU Athletics. The women’s outdoor track and field team won in 11 years to go along with the men’s cross country team capturing its 15 MAC crown. The Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women’s athletic program turned in third place showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men’s athletic program turned in its fifth consecutive top five finish in the battle for the Reese Trophy. The 2011-12 fall and winter revenue-gener-ating sports programs had a banner season, ranking as the third-best combined winning percentage for the football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball programs since joining the MAC in the 1976-77 academic year. Eastern posted a .593 winning percentage during the 2011-12 season between the four revenue-generating sports, while coming out victorious in 62.50 percent of their MAC tilts which ranks first in its history. In total, the Green and White won a pair of MAC titles during the 2011-12 campaign in men’s cross country and swimming, while claiming the MAC West Division crowns in both men’s and women’s basketball. Additonally, four of EMU’s top six athletic

fundraising years have occurred during the past six years under Gragg’s leadership. The Eastern Michigan University Office of Athletics Compliance is committed to a com-prehensive compliance program that educates student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, institutional employees, community members and boosters about the importance of adhering to NCAA, Mid-American Conference and institu-tional rules. The commitment to compliance en-sures institutional control over the department of athletics. The existence of a successful com-pliance program depends on the willingness of coaches, administrators, staff, student-athletes and boosters to be cognizant of NCAA, MAC and institutional rules.

WHAT IS COMPLIANCE? At Eastern Michigan University, the Office of Compliance works within the department of athletics and the University to ensure EMU's compliance with all applicable NCAA, MAC and institutional rules. In doing so, the compliance office is charged with the following tasks:

Educating administrators, coaches, staff, •prospective student-athletes, current stu-dent-athletes and boosters about NCAA, MAC and institutional rules;Developing monitoring systems to ensure •compliance with NCAA, MAC and institu-tional rules (e.g., recruiting, academic eli-gibility, financial aid, awards and benefits, amateurism and agents);Investigating and reporting violations of •NCAA, MAC and institutional rules.

ARE YOU A BOOSTER? You are a booster if you are or ever have:

Been a member of a booster organization •that supports EMU athletics (e.g., EMU Ath-letic Club, E-Gridiron Group);Made any financial contributions to the •athletics department;Been involved in promoting EMU's athlet-•ics program;Been a season ticket holder; or•Provided benefits to enrolled student-ath-•letes or their relatives or friends.

You can become a booster if you provide ben-efits to prospects, student-athletes, their rela-tives or friends and any of the following state-ments are true:

The relationship between the athlete (or •parents of the athlete) and the individual providing the benefits developed as a re-sult of the athlete's participation in athlet-ics or their reputation as an athlete; The relationship began only after the ath-•lete become a prospect; The relationship began only after the ath-•lete had achieved notoriety due to his or her athletic ability or reputation; The pattern of benefits increased after the •athlete attained notoriety as a talented athlete.

ONCE A BOOSTER ALWAYS A BOOSTER. Once an individual is identified as a booster, the person retains that identity forever! This is true even if the individual no longer contributes to, or is involved with, EMU's athletics program.

WHO IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE? A prospective student-athlete (prospect) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade, students enrolled in preparatory schools and two-year colleges are also considered pros-pects. An individual remains a prospect even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent.

WHAT IS AN EXTRA BENEFIT? An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a EMU employee or booster to provide a pros-pect, student-athlete or their relatives or friends a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Examples of impermissible benefits include, but are not limited to, the following:

Gifts of cash, clothing, equipment or any •other tangible item;A special discount, payment arrangement •or credit on any purchase or service;Loan of money or co-signing of loans;•A vehicle, use of a vehicle, or any transpor-•tation expenses;Free or reduced-cost services, purchases or •rentals;Entertainment on- or off-campus; or•Free or reduced-cost rent or housing.•

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES? EMU is responsible for the actions of its boost-ers. If a booster provides an impermissible ben-efit to a prospect, student-athlete, their relatives or friends, EMU may be subject to penalties from the NCAA and Mid-American Conference. When a violation occurs, regardless of intention, it can:

Jeopardize the eligibility of prospective •and current student-athletes; Result in the EMU athletics program being •penalized by the NCAA and/or the Mid-American Conference; and Cause you to lose benefits or privileges •associated with the athletics department (i.e., booster club membership, ticket privi-leges).

QUESTIONS? The above information is a brief overview of compliance and rules pertaining to boosters and their interactions with prospective student-athletes. If you have any questions about any NCAA, MAC or institutional rules, please contact the Christopher Hoppe at 734.487.3263 or [email protected]. For more information on compliance and boosters, please visit the Office of Athletic Compliance's website at: EMUEagles.com/compliance

RECRUITING DO'S AND DON'TS Only EMU coaches may be involved in the recruiting process. Boosters may not make any recruiting contacts with prospective student-athletes, Boosters are prohibited from the fol-lowing:

Do not telephone, write or make in-person •contact with a prospect for recruiting pur-posesDo not contact a prospect's coach, princi-•pal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospectDo not become involved in making ar-•rangements for a prospect, the prospect's relatives or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kindDo not visit a prospect's school to acquire •films or transcripts in an attempt to evalu-ate the prospect's academic or athletics eligibilityDo not have contact with a prospect, their •relatives or friends during any of their vis-its to EMU's campusDo not contact student-athletes enrolled •in other four-year institutions regarding the possibility of transferring to EMU

Student-Athlete Support Services Academic, personal and professional support are essential to college success. At EMU, Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) helps student-athletes reach their full potential. Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program, integrated with the University, that will assist all student-athletes with their transition into college. This all-encompassing support continues throughout each student-athlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands a job or enters graduate school. Being proactive rather than reactive, our staff does not wait for an academic crisis to occur. We gather important background information and build an academic profile on each student-athlete, assessing his or her needs in advance. Services provided through SASS include the following: programs that focus on student-athletes’ special needs, monitoring academic performance, providing learning assistance, assisting with registration procedures, assisting in monitoring athletic eligibility, providing priority registration and making sure that athletes are advised about current NCAA, MAC and University rules and regulations. Freshmen and transfer student-athletes encounter a major transition when making the switch from high school or community college to a university. These students, while adjusting to their new routines, receive extra attention and sup-port. College is not easy. But with hard work and dedication from both the student-athlete and the support staff, the student-athlete can have a successful college experience. The success of Eastern’s student-athletes hinges on their willingness to seek as-sistance from SASS as well as other University student services. SASS staff members continually refer student-athletes to the Admissions Office, Academic Advising Center, Career Services Center, Health Services, the Records Office, Financial Aid and The Holman Learning Center. Faculty members also provide assistance to student-athletes through advising in course selection and providing additional help with courses when requested.

Athletic Training and Sports Medicine The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Department has a long history and reputation for excellence in the health care of student-athletes and the educa-tion of athletic training students. Founding practitioners Gary Strickland, Ron Venis and Dr. Wally Roeser envisioned a goal of first-class prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all student-athletes. Although the department continues to grow, its primary mission remains the same. The student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics receive comprehensive health care from an expansive sports medicine team. The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine staff is led by Dr. Wally Roeser and head athletic trainer Steve Nordwall. Additionally, the staff consists of two primary care sports medicine fellows, three full-time staff athletic trainers, two full-time athletic training clinical educators, five graduate assistant athletic trainers. Our sports medicine staff works in conjunction with various medical professionals within the community who provide nutritional, dental, vision and other specialized services for our student-athletes. At Eastern Michigan University, the philosophy of the Sports Medicine staff is two-fold: to provide a high standard of medical care through effective preventive and management programs, and to facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation process for a safe return to competition. In all cases, the ultimate well-being of each student-athlete is considered our number one priority, not only while they compete at Eastern Michigan University, but during their lifetime as well. The Sports Medicine staff operates out of three campus athletic training facilities in the Convocation Center, Bowen Field House and the Rynearson Stadium team building.

Strength and Conditioning The main focus of the EMU strength and conditioning program is to develop the complete student-athlete. Everything that is incorporated into the training program relates to success on the court. The program is not just about lifting weights, but rather the development of all aspects of athletic performance. These areas include speed, strength, quickness, agility, flexibility, explosion, sports nutrition and mental toughness. One of the main objectives of the program is to improve the players’ agility and speed. The goal is to develop stronger and more physical student-athletes without losing speed or flexibility. With that in mind, our staff focuses on improving strength in the “Power Zone.” Abdominal, lower back and hip strength are crucial for an athlete’s success. Increas-ing strength in these areas decreases the chance and severity of injury and assists in strength and power development. EMU athletes are pushed as much as possible to prepare for competition. The athletes are challenged through physically demanding and intense workouts year-round. The athletes are also challenged during each workout with some type of mental toughness/physical challenge. We train not only the physical side of the student-athlete, but also the mental and competitive side. While everyone lifts weights during the year, EMU Eagle student-athletes will also condition. This places us as one of the best conditioned teams in the country each year. Our goal is simple: Be the best conditioned/most physical team in the country. A highly motivated athlete is a program’s most valuable asset. Everyone in the country works on developing their athletes from the neck down, but at EMU, our program strives for excellence both mentally and physically. Our staff works to develop long-term and short-term goals for success. We work closely with the athletes so we know exactly what they are doing and what they need to do to improve. Developing athletes is a year-round task for our strength staff. During the year, the athletes will spend almost as much time in the weight room as they do on the court. Strength and Conditioning at EMU is a full-time commitment. There is no such thing as part-time champions. EMU athletes work hard but have fun. The camaraderie and work ethic developed in the weight room carry onto the field.

Bowen Field House holds a special place in the hearts and minds of anyone associated with EMU as the venerable venue enters its 56th season of use in 2011-12. It was the sec-ond field house built on Eastern’s campus and was constructed concurrently with Goddard and Jones Residence Halls and Pine Grove Apartments during a period of great growth for the university. Briggs Field House was simply too small. Bowen Field House was built as the first stage of a full-scale physical educa-tion facility. Later additions would include a gymnasium, swimming pool, additional locker rooms and classrooms.

Bowen was named for the late Wilbur Pardon Bowen, a mathematics instructor and first head of the Department of Physical Education, 1894-1928. It was he who first established a teacher-training course in physical education. The 88,000 square foot building cost $1.25 million to construct. When it was built, it was one of the largest in the country including not only basketball, track, and baseball practice areas, but also facilities for outdoor activities like tennis and badminton. It also had indoor classrooms. There was permanent seating for 1,200 viewers and theoretically, additional seating capacity for 6,000. The building also included an 8-laps-to-the-mile track, a hard surfaced infield, a lounge, and a physical therapy room.

Bowen Field House saw 351 wins in its 43 years as the home of Eastern’s men’s basketball team. Cheering and applause echoed from the steal beams of the building leading a radio announcer on WEMU to refer to the building as “The Old Barn” and the name stuck. Origi-nally basketball court was located in front of the balcony and the baskets were at east and

west ends of court. The floor later switched to north/south direction in 1960.

Bowen has undergone several renovations. In 1976 it had its first face-lift, intended to increase attendance at major events. In 1982 it received a 9,400 square foot addition, new lighting, a new track surface, and improved seating, which expanded seating permanent capacity to 4,800. In 1986 it was further re-modeled and made handicapped accessible, offices were updated, a two-story addition was built on the southwest corner, and the heating and air conditioning were improved

Since the 1991 season, Eastern Michigan University athletic teams have gone by the nickname “Eagles.” The Eagles name was officially adopted on May 22, 1991, when the EMU Board of Regents voted to replace the existing Huron nickname and logo with the new one. EMU originally went by the nicknames “Normalites,” “Men from Ypsi” and various other titles through the years before “Hurons” was adopted in 1929. The “Hurons” first came into being as the re-sult of a contest sponsored by the Men’s Union in 1929. On Oct. 31 of that year, a three-person committee, composed of Dr. Clyde Ford, Dr. Elmer Lyman and Professor Bert Peet, selected the name “Hurons” from the many entries in the contest. The name was submitted by two students, Gretchen Borst and George Hanner. Hanner was working at the Huron Hotel at the time of the contest and was no doubt as much influenced by his place of employment as by the Huron Indian tribe. The runner-up name in that contest was Pioneers. EMU began investigating the appropriate-ness of its Huron Indian logo after the Michigan Department of Civil Rights issued a report in October 1988 suggesting that all schools using such logos drop them. The report indicated that the use of Native American names, logos and mascots for athletic teams promoted racial stereotypes. At that time, four colleges, 62 high schools and 33 junior high/middle schools in Michigan used Indian logos or names. The EMU Board of Regents voted to replace the Huron name with Eagles, taken from three recommendations from a committee charged with supplying a new nickname. The other two final names submitted were Green Hornets and Express.

The EMU Athletic Club provides vital financial support to more than 550 student-athletes at Eastern Michigan University as they strive for excellence on the court and in the classroom. Nearly 1,000 donors generously supported our outstanding scholar-athletes each year. Established in 1994, the EMU Athletic Club raises funds in three key areas for EMU’s 21 varsity athletic teams: annual-use operating funds, endowment, and facility related projects. Today, annual-use giving is the most critical area of support needed by the Athletic Department. These contributions directly support the operating budgets of our teams and help provide the most basic needs to our coaches and student-athletes, including compre-hensive national recruiting efforts, out of region travel to maintain nationally competitive schedules, equipment such as uniforms, balls, nets, bats, and much more. Gifts to any of our teams, or to the Eagles for Excellence Fund (which will be used for the most urgent needs of the athletic department), are an investment in the future leaders of the state of Michigan. Join the EMU Athletic Club today and make a difference for EMU Athletics.

The Mid-American Conference Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 66th year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and devel-oped into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 foot-ball Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth com-missioner in March of 2009. The league has grown its commitment to cham-pionships by expanding to six its number of neu-tral site post season events – football (Ford Field, Detroit), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Quicken Loans Are-na, Cleveland), softball (Firestone Stadium, Akron) and baseball (All Pro Freight Stadium, Avon, Ohio). In 2011, the MAC set a conference record with a 4-1 record in bowl games and won the prestigious ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup for the best FBS confer-ence record in bowl games. The MAC also tied a conference record for bowl invitations in a single season as the five bowl invitations marked the fourth time in conference history (2004, 2008, 2009, 2011). The five MAC programs that were extended bowl invitations included: Temple (Gildan New Mexico Bowl), Ohio (Famous Idaho Potato Bowl), Western Michigan (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl), To-ledo (Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grum-man) and Northern Illinois (GoDaddy.com Bowl). The 2011 season also witnessed Northern Illinois win the 2011 Marathon MAC Football Champion-ship Game with a 23-20 win over Ohio. MAC pro-grams were a combined 4-0 against Army last sea-son (wins by Northern Illinois, Miami, Ball State and Temple), while Temple had an impressive 38-7 win at Maryland (ACC), Western Michigan’s 38-31 win at UConn (Big East), Ohio’s 44-7 win over Marshall (Conference USA) and Ball State’s 27-20 win over Indiana (Big Ten). or the first time in its history, the MAC will have seven bowl relationships--three primary and four secondary. The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), Go-Daddy.com Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise, Ida.). In addition, the MAC has secured secondary agreements with the BBVA Compass Bowl (2012-2013), the Gildan New Mexico Bowl (2012-2013), the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl (2012-13) and the TicketCity Bowl (2012). In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC is in the fourth year of its eight-year rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic years) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most extensive in the 66-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship Game and a minimum of 11 regu-lar-season football games. In men’s basketball, the MAC tied a conference record as six programs received invites to postsea-son tournaments, highlighted by Ohio’s run to the NCAA Sweet 16 and an overtime loss to No. 1 seed North Carolina. Ohio reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship after tournament wins over Michigan and South Florida. The Bobcats became

the first No. 13 seed to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament since Bradley in 2006. The Bobcats also became the first team from the MAC to advance to the Sweet 16 since 2002. Ohio finished No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, marking the first time the Bobcats have been ranked to end a season. The MAC had a total of six men’s basketball programs reach the postseason in 2011-12: Ohio (NCAA), Akron (NIT), Bowling Green (CIT), Buffalo (CIT), Toledo (CIT) and Kent State (CIT). Buffalo’s Mitchell Watt was named an honor-able mention All-America by the Associated Press. In baseball, Kent State won the MAC champion-ship and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA baseball tournament and advanced to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in program history and the first program from the MAC since 1976 (Eastern Michigan). The Golden Flashes be-gan the postseason with a dramatic 7-6 win over No. 2 seed Kentucky in 21 innings in the Gary, Ind. Regional. Kent State went on to defeat Purdue and Kentucky for the second time to advance to the Super 16 Regional in Eugene, Ore. Kent State con-tinued its dominance by winning the best-of-three game series over host Oregon to advance to the College World Series. In Omaha, Kent State opened with an 8-1 loss to South Carolina before defeating No. 1 seeded Florida, 5-4 to knock the Gators out of the postseason. Kent State finished with a 4-1 loss to South Carolina. In the process, Kent State finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation by College Baseball and No. 8 by the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. A total of 18 MAC student-athletes were selected in Major League Baseball’s 2012 Draft – including Buffalo C Tom Murphy (Colorado, 3rd Rd., 105th overall), Ohio RHP Seth Streich (Oak-land, 6th Rd., 199th overall) and Kent State LHP Da-vid Starn (Atlanta, 7th Rd., 239th overall). During the 2011-12 academic year, the Univer-sity of Akron men’s soccer team witnessed sopho-more Darren Mattocks and junior Scott Caldwell earn All-America status as the Zips made their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA post-season Round of 16 with wins over Northwestern and SMU. Northern Illinois won the MAC Cham-pionship with a 1-0 win over Western Michigan, and earned an appearance in the NCAA tourna-ment and defeated Western Illinois before falling to Creighton. The MAC announced the addition West Virginia as an affiliate member in men’s soc-cer for the 2012-13 academic year as eight teams will compete in conference play. In wrestling, Central Michigan won its eleventh

consecutive MAC championship, while the MAC sent 24 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. In addition, three grapplers se-cured All-America honors--Central Michigan’s Ben Bennett (184), Kent State’s Nic Bedelyon (125) and Ohio’s Jeremy Johnson (285). In men’s cross country, Eastern Michigan claimed its 16th conference championship, while the Eagles captured their 30th conference title in men’s swim-ming and diving. The 30 championship titles for Eastern Michigan in men’s swimming and diving is a conference record. Western Michigan won its ninth conference championship in men’s tennis, while Akron won both the men’s indoor and out-door track and field championships. Kent State won its 20th MAC title in men’s golf and received its 25th NCAA appearance. The No. 17 ranked Golden Flashes advanced to the match-play portion of the NCAA Championship and se-cured the highest finish in school history by tying for fifth in the nation. Kent State sophomore Corey Conners earned Honorable Mention by the GCAA. Women’s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. The MAC had a total of five women’s basketball programs invited to postsea-son tournaments. Eastern Michigan claimed the MAC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while Bowling Green, Central Michi-gan, Miami and Toledo all received at-large invita-tions to the WNIT Tournament. The Toledo Rockets were the defending WNIT champions and began the 2012 WNIT Tournament with wins over Detroit, Cincinnati and VCU before falling to Syracuse in overtime in the WNIT ‘Elite Eight’. In volleyball, the MAC had a record four teams receive bids to the NCAA Volleyball Champion-ship and finished with the highest conference ranking in RPI in conference history, finishing sev-enth. Central Michigan won the MAC tournament title and earned the programs first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, while Ball State, Northern Illi-nois and Western Michigan each received at-large bids. Northern Illinois’ Kristin Hoffman was named to the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention as well as the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Volleyball team. Ohio won its sixth MAC conference title in field hockey, while Toledo claimed its fourth title in school history in women’s cross country in record fashion. The Rockets scored a conference record-low 33 points and won back-to-back conference titles for the second time in school history. Also in women’s cross country, Ohio’s Juli Accurso fin-
