THE UNIVERSITY

Clarkson University was founded in 1896 as a memorial to Thomas S. Clarkson, successful entrepreneur and Northern New York businessman who was also distinguished by a deep and abiding concern for humanity.

When Thomas Clarkson died as a result of an accident in his sandstone quarry, his sisters, Elizabeth, Frederica, and Lavinia estab-lished a memorial to his name by building and endowing an institution that would embody his philosophy. Clarkson's original motto, “A Workman That Needeth Not to be Ashamed,” is taken from Thomas S. Clarkson's favorite biblical verse. Clarkson's colors, green and gold, were selected because the goldenrod was Thomas S. Clarkson's favorite fl ower.

The fi rst classes at the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology were held on September 2, 1896, for 17 young men and women. In 1913, the charter was amended, and the name was changed to the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology.

Steady growth and development resulted in the New York State Board of Regents designating Clarkson a University on February 24, 1984.

CLARKSON TODAYToday, Clarkson is a nationally ranked research university offering more than 50 comprehensive programs in business, engineering, science, liberal arts, health sciences, and environmental studies. With 270 full-time teacher-scholars engaged in world-class research, Clarkson has developed an international reputation in the fi elds of Advanced Materials Science, Biotechnology, Environment & Energy, Entrepreneurship and Global Supply Chain Management.

Yet the University remains true to Thomas Clarkson’s enduring legacy. Our primary mission is to educate talented and motivated men and women to become successful professionals through quality precollegiate, undergraduate, graduate and professional continuing edu-cation programs, with particular emphasis on the undergraduate experience.

At Clarkson, we value the diversity of our University community, and we strive to attune ourselves and our programs to our global, pluralistic society.

We share the belief that humane economic and social development derive from the expansion, diffusion and application of knowledge. The Clarkson University educational experience is designed to provide talented and ambitious students with the knowledge and skills

necessary to achieve positions of leadership within their chosen profession. The combination of Clarkson’s strong technologically rich curricula and state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, coupled with an unparalleled commitment to a friendly learning environ-ment and to students’ personal development, uniquely prepares Clarkson graduates to excel in their chosen professions and to lead re-warding and creative lives.

POTSDAM and ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY

Adirondack Mountains

http://www.potsdam.ny.us/

St. Lawrence County is a place where you find the best that America has to offer – a place where farmers and professors work

near each other with admiration and respect, a place where Fortune 500 companies operate alongside artisans and mom and pop shops, a place that is rugged and wild, yet cosmopolitan and “home” to people from 40 different countries.

St. Lawrence County is the largest geographical county east of the Mississippi, yet there are only 110,000 residents. The forests and parks teem with wildlife from bear to fi sh, moose to white-tailed deer. There are thousands of acres of woods and over 200 ponds, lakes and rivers. The mighty St. Lawrence connects the country to Canadian neighbors, just minutes away. St. Lawrence County is an educational community and boasts six colleges and Universities, which turn out future leaders of the country’s businesses and communities.

As for recreation, St. Lawrence County has it all: camping, fi shing, boating, biking, hiking, canoeing, swimming, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and fairs and festivals of all kinds. Mostly, what you’ll fi nd on your visit to St. Lawrence County is an unhurried atmosphere where people will gladly take a moment to pass the time of day and tell you stories of life in Border Country. You will fi nd a place that’s safe to visit, with wide open spaces and a strong regard for those who live, work and visit here.

St. Lawrence County, the North Coast of America, entices both rug-ged adventurers and those just content to sit back and watch. Stretching from the St. Lawrence River, to deep into the famed Adirondack Park with majestic forests and lakes, St. Lawrence County encompasses 2,840 square miles. It’s New York’s largest county. There’s plenty of room for all. No matter what the season, there is never a limit to the adventures you’ll fi nd in St. Lawrence County.

POTSDAMKnown as the “cultural and educational center of St. Lawrence County,” Potsdam is a warm and neighborly community, rich in heritage and tradi-tion while involved in exploration of cutting-edge technology.

Victorian-style architecture is blended with modern educational and scientifi c centers, cultural and shopping facilities, restaurants, medical fa-cilities, airport and accommodations. Several of the town’s earliest homes and public buildings were constructed of Potsdam sandstone, which was so abundant at the time the town was fi rst explored for permanent settlement.

Fans of the arts have a wealth of resources available, enriched by the colleges and universities in the area. Potsdam is home of Clarkson University, a 4-year private institution specializing in technology and Potsdam College, a 4-year Liberal Arts College, which is part of the State University of New York. Art galleries, visiting theatre and dance companies, opera and classical musical concerts based at the schools draw performance artists from around the world. Contemporary musical acts fi nd they receive a particularly warm reception in Potsdam. Performances in the area have included Trisha Yearwood, The Irish Rovers, The Indigo Girls and Sugar Ray. These are in addition to a host of local talent that entertains the community in frequent open-air concerts and festivals in the summer months.

Visitors can sample a variety of cuisines any time of the year from one of Potsdam’s many eateries. In any season, outdoor enthusiasts will feel right at home in Potsdam. The Racquette River provides the perfect setting for canoeing, kayaking, or swimming. The surrounding woods are ideal for an afternoon of hiking and exploration or, even, a fall picnic. In the winter, the gentle slopes provide a great location for cross-country skiers and sledding fans alike. Nothing beats the view from Potsdam, no matter what the season is. Discover Potsdam and see what you have been missing.

Regarded by many as among the finest college hockey facili-ties in the country, Cheel Arena has proved to be an ideal

venue in which to watch some of the best men's and women’s hockey that the NCAA has to offer. “Cheel Arena is one of the showcase hockey arenas in the nation, and a great tribute to all the players, coaches and staff at Clarkson University and the ECAC,” stated former ECAC Commissioner Clayton Chapman.

The Campus Center provides the University with a 110,000-square-foot student center and multipurpose arena. A major gift commitment from Helen Snell Cheel resulted in the building being called the Cheel Campus Center. The arena features a regulation ice surface measuring 85' x 200' and approximately 3,000 individual backed seats, reached from sloping aisles. Every seat offers unobstructed sight lines to the ice surface. The arena will accommodate an additional 400-900 spectators in the standing-room areas along its perimeter. Five spacious carpeted dressing rooms for Clarkson's women's and men's teams, and visiting teams, plus a complete

training room, a fully equipped weight room, players lounge, and coaches’ offi ce, as well as storage and skate-sharpening areas, are included in the lower level of the complex. The upper level features a hospitality suite that overlooks the arena surface from center-ice. Highlighting the arena high above center-ice is a Fairplay board 14’by 13’-- 48” by 60 “ full color for animations, pictures, and message center.

In addition to hosting some of the fi nest hockey in the Northeast, the multipurpose arena also serves the entire Clarkson com-munity, which can congregate in one place for convocations, commencement, concerts, and other events.. This facility is located on the hill campus, adjacent to the CAMP Building, Snell Field and the indoor Recreation Center. Final design of the Campus Center was conducted by Daniel F. Tully Associates Inc. of Boston. Construction began June 15, 1990, and was completed in late August 1991.

CHEEL CAMPUS CENTER

In their fi rst nine seasons as an NCAA Division I program, the Clarkson women have posted 102 wins on their home ice.

“They did everything right—the whole thing,” exclaimed Len Ceglar-ski, former Clarkson and Boston College head coach, at Cheel’s opening. “They really needed a student union and a new rink, and this is going to be a great tool for them. It is just a beautiful building.”

SHANNON & MATT DESROSIERS • CO-HEAD COACHES

The first husband-wife head coaching combination in college hockey. Shannon and Matt Desrosiers begin their fifth year guiding the Clarkson Women's Hockey program in 2012-13.

On April 8, 2008, Clarkson University Women's Hockey ushered in a new era with the appointment of Shannon

and Matt Desrosiers as the new co-head coaches of the Golden Knights Women’s Hockey team.

The fi rst four seasons for the co-head coaches has been a success as the Desrosiers have guided the Green and Gold to a 75-53-22 record. Last season, the Knights skated to 22 victories and earned the program's most wins ever in ECAC Hockey playing, fi nishing third in the conference with a 15-5-2 mark.

In 2009-10, the Knights enjoyed their best season ever in the program's history, as the co-head coaches established Clarkson among the elite in the NCAA. Ranked throughout the season among the Top 10 in the national polls, the Knights skated to a 23-12-5 overall record and a second-place fi nish in ECAC Hockey with a 14-5-3 league mark. Clarkson advanced to its fi rst ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship game and qualifi ed for its fi rst NCAA

Tournament. The Knights just missed out on postseason glory, falling in over-time in the league title game and coming up one goal short in the extra session in the NCAA Quarterfi nals.

Shannon Desrosiers has been with Clarkson's Division I program since its fi rst season in 2003-04, serving as an assistant coach for the fi rst fi ve years. Matt Desrosiers was an assistant coach for the Knights two seasons (2006-08).

"We are very fortunate to have two capable people in Shannon and Matt heading our program," stated Clarkson Athletic Director Steve Yianoukos. I am confi dent Clarkson Women's Hockey will achieve great success under Shannon and Matt's guidance."

A top forward for St. Lawrence from 1999-2003, Shannon Desrosiers has been a signifi cant factor in the Knights emergence as one of the top teams in ECAC Hockey and a respected program in the NCAA. Shannon has been very instrumental in bringing to the University some of the top recruits in the country. Shannon handles the majority of the off-ice aspects such as recruiting and public relations.

Shannon Desrosiers fi nished her collegiate career as the Saints’ fourth all-time leading scorer, amassing 123 points on 44 goals and 79 assists through 138 games. Serving as a captain in her senior campaign, the Fernie, British Columbia native tied for the team lead in points and assists, recording 38 points on 13 goals and 25 assists through 35 games. She was named St. Lawrence’s Best Defensive Player her senior season.

MATT KELLY • ASSISTANT COACH

In his fi fth year as an assis-tant coach with the Knights,

Matt Kelly joined the Clarkson staff after spending the 2007-08 campaign on the women’s hockey coaching staff at Quin-nipiac University.

Prior to that, he started his coaching career at Wayne State University in Detroit where he was the volunteer assistant coach during the 2006-2007 season.

Kelly's responsibilities in-cluded designing and imple-menting a comprehensive goaltending practice as well as providing one-on-one goalie

specifi c training. He is also responsible for all aspects of video breakdown and analysis as well as maintaining academic support for the team.

"We feel fortunate to have a quality person like Matt on our staff here at Clarkson," stated Matt Desrosiers. "Although his ex-pertise is at the goaltending position, Matt adds much more to our program. He is hard working, enthusiastic, and extremely pas-sionate about the game of hockey. We are confi dent that Matt will continue to help the Clarkson Women’s Hockey program as we strive to be among the best teams in the country."

Kelly was a four-year member of the Wayne State men's hock-ey team as a goaltender, serving as a captain during his senior campaign in 2005-2006. That season, Kelly received College Hockey America All-Conference Second Team honors as well as winning the CHA/Easton Three Star Award and being named Wayne State's Most Valuable Player. Kelly also was named to the CHA All-Academic Team, and the 2004 CHA All-Tourna-ment Team. Kelly holds the Wayne State single-season marks for goals against average (2.54) and save percentage (.922). He played three years of Junior A hockey in the United States Hock-ey League prior to his collegiate career, splitting time between the Cedar Rapids Roughriders (1999-2000 and 2000-01) and the Topeka Scarecrows (2001-02).

A native of Hull, Massachusetts, Kelly graduated from Wayne State in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in media arts and studies. Kelly and his wife, Brooke, make their home in the Potsdam area with their young son, Colton, and baby daughter, Makenzie.

The Clarkson University Men’s Hockey team added

a key member to the staff with the announcement in the sum-mer of 2011 that Jaime Ro-driguez was the new Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Green and Gold’s hockey programs.

Rodriguez came to Clarkson from the American Hockey League’s Worcester Sharks where he was the director of strength and conditioning since 2007. During that time he served as an assistant for the San Jose Sharks Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Mi-

chael Potenza, where he elevated his coaching experience working with professional athletes.

Rodriguez also worked alongside strength & conditioning ex-pert Michael Boyle for eight years at his private facility as a head strength coordinator. For the past 11 years Rodriguez has catered to the needs of men and women of all ages helping to improve an athlete’s chance to excel to a higher level.

“I am extremely pleased to have Jaime on our developmental staff for Clarkson Hockey,” stated Head Coach Casey Jones about the addition of Rodriguez. “Jaime has a great track record of work-ing with young, aspiring hockey players. His knowledge and energy will be exciting for our players to take advantage of.”

Rodriguez has trained ath letes from mid dle school up to Divi-sion 1 Col lege in a vari ety of sports as well as pro fes sional athletes from the NHL, AHL, NFL, MLS, and MLB. Rodriguez believes the key to success is stressing the importance of strength, teamwork, injury reduction, and nutrition.

Rodriguez previously resided in Boston, MA, where he earned his Bachelors in Exercise Physiology from Lasell College in 2003. Rodriguez, along with his wife Juliana, and their two young sons Jayden (3 years) and Jordan (1 year), make their home in the Potsdam area.

HEAD COACHESAfter guiding Clarkson to one of its best seasons ever last year, co-head coaches Matt and Shannon Desrosiers were named fi nalists for ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year. Under the leadership of the Desrosiers and with help from assistant coach Matt Kelly and volunteer coach Carly Eu-sepi '10, the Golden Knights fi nished in third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 15-5-2 league mark. Celebrating its 10th season as an NCAA Division I

program, the Clarkson Uni-versity Women’s Hockey team seems to have all the pieces in place to enjoy a very successful 2012-13 campaign. The Golden Knights boast an all-star in goal to backbone a stingy defense and return last year’s top-three scorers to highlight the offense. Add in an infl ux of a talent from anoth-

er promising freshman class and the Green and Gold will look to chal-lenge for ECAC Hock-ey supremacy this winter and make a strong bid to return to the NCAA Tournament.

Guided by fi fth-year co-head coaches Matt and Shannon Desro-siers, and assistant coach Matt Kelly, Clarkson returns 15 letterwinners from last year’s squad, which was one of the best in ECAC Hockey.

The Knights skated to the pro-gram’s fourth 20-win season with a 22-10-5 overall record and placed third in the con-ference with a 15-5-2 ECAC Hockey mark.

Clarkson graduated a hard-working fi ve-member senior class last May, but fi ve gifted freshmen will help overcome that loss.

Clarkson will need to be in top form this season as it faces perhaps the most challenging schedule in the program’s his-tory. The Green and Gold will play 11 games against teams

that made last year’s NCAA Tournament, including three match-ups against 2012 Frozen Four participants.

The Knights battle St. Law-rence in Canton on October 5 for the fi rst of four meetings against their North Country neighbor. A game in Potsdam against St. Lawrence follows on October 6 for the fi rst of 17 regular-season games at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson, which has quali-fi ed for ECAC Hockey post-season play in each of its fi rst eight years in the highly com-petitive conference, opens the 22-game league campaign hosting capital district rivals Union College and Rensselaer in Potsdam on October 26-27. Prior to the offi cial start of the 2012-13 campaign, Clarkson

will host Ottawa-PWHL on Saturday, September 29 in an exhibition contest to begin the program’s 10th season.

GOAL:The ECAC’s Goaltender of the Year in 2011-12, junior Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) re-turns for her third year as the Knights’ starter in the crease. Selected as Clarkson's Most Valuable Player, Howe was the key reason for the Green and Gold’s success last winter. Play-ing in all but 41 minutes Howe posted a .927 save percent-age, 1.75 goals-against average (sixth in Division 1) and a .662 winning percentage. She tied for fi fth in the nation in shut-outs with seven through 37 games and allowed one goal or less in 16 contests as Clarkson

boasted the fi fth-best scoring defense in the nation (1.78 gpg).

Sophomores Emily Horn (Hamilton, ONT) and Jenna Boss (Little Canada, MN) con-tributed in back-up roles to Howe last season and gained valuable experienced through-out their rookie campaigns. Both will push for more play-ing time this winter.

Horn played 41 minutes through two games and turned aside 10 of the 11 shots she faced. An unselfi sh team player, Boss was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic team.

DEFENSE:The Knights graduated two standouts on the blueline in Katelyn Ptolemy and Danielle Boudreau, but bring back fi ve defensive stalwarts.

Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB), one of only two seniors on the 2012-13 roster, will provide the veteran leadership on the blueline along with solid all-around play. A strong defen-

sive player, Wood emerged as an offensive force last season and led the Clarkson defense-men in scoring with 24 points. She was among the Knights’ leading playmakers overall with 21 assists through 37 games. Wood posts an impressive +22 plus/minus rating through 110 career games.

Junior Vanessa Plante (Riviere-du-Loup, QUE) pro-vides an intimidating presence in front of the net and will also lead the D-core with her solid all-around play.

Three sophomores are coming off solid rookie cam-paigns and should really come into their own this season af-ter gaining a year of collegiate experience.

Jennifer Shields (Ingersoll, ONT), who was named Clark-son’s Rookie of the Year, made a big impression as a solid, stay-at-home defenseman who skated in 35 games. She was second for the Knights in plus/minus with a +14.

Taylor Gedig (Kelowna, BC) and Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC), both strong, imposing players, made sig-nifi cant contributions to the Golden Knights’ stingy defen-sive effort, skating in 37 and 36 games, respectively.

Freshman Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) comes to Clarkson with an impressive resume playing for numer-ous Hockey Canada national teams. She is among an elite group of 40 talented Hockey Canada players who have been selected to attend Canada’s National Women’s Team Sep-tember Camp/Fall Festival. Ambrose served as team cap-tain for her PWHL team the Toronto Junior Aero’s, Team Ontario and also Team Canada U-18’s in 2011-12.

A talented all-around ath-lete, Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) will play a pivotal role on the Clarkson defense this winter. She skated last season for the Burlington Junior Bar-racudas (PWHL) and also par-ticipated at Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Develop-ment Team selection camp this past August.

FORWARDS:Senior Danielle Skir-row (Trenton, ONT) and juniors Jamie Lee Rattray (Kana-ta, ONT) and Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) powered the Knights’ offense last season and should be at the top of the charts again in 2012-13.

The Golden Knights were ranked fourth in the nation last year in combined specialty teams play.

Skirrow emerged as a productive of-fensive force for the Green and Gold as the Golden Knights’ third-leading scorer last year during her third season. She was second on the team in goals with 17, and added 12 assists for 29 points. A top spe-cialty teams player, Skirrow netted a team-high 10 power-play goals (tied for 7th in the nation) and also collected a team-high fi ve game-winners.

After two productive seasons for the Knights, Rattray is ready to breakout and emerge as one of the top offensive players in the country. She averaged over a point per game in 2011-12 with a team-high 19 goals along with 19 assists through 33 games. Rattray tallied six power-play goals and four game-winners along with posting a +13 plus/minus rating. Rattray has an extensive background with Hockey Canada, and will participate, along with Ambrose, at Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival. She Participated with Canada’s U22 National Team at the 2012 Meco Cup in Fussen, Germany last January and the USA/Canada series this August.

Mercer continues to develop into one of ECAC Hockey’s most promising forwards. She was the Knights’ leading scorer last year after earning Clarkson’s

Rookie of the Year honor in 2010-11. She tallied 40 points, including a team-high 26 assists, last winter and played a leading role on the Knights’ eighth-ranked power play (34-159, 21.4%) with eight goals on the man-advantage. Mercer also attended Canada’s Na-tional Women’s Under-22/Development Team selec-tion camp this past August. Three juniors have made signifi cant strides in their careers and will be counted upon to be among the Knights’ most reliable players up front.

Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB), who plays in all key situations for the Knights, recorded six goals and 17 assists for 23 points last winter and was among the team leaders in plus/minus at +13. Classmate Vanessa Gagnon (St. Constant, QUE) came through with a solid sophomore season, skating in all 37 games as a strong two-way center. She tallied 12 points on four goals and eight assists and was strong on face-offs, winning 56% of her draws. Shelby Nisbet (Wiseton, SASK) has de-veloped into a quick power for-ward. Playing in all 37 games last season, she scored fi ve goals and seven assists along with posting a +5 plus/minus rating.

With a year of experience gained, sophomore Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) will supply another key component to the Knights’ of-fense. She enjoyed a solid rookie campaign playing in 32 games and recording four goals and fi ve assists along with a +7 rating.

Three freshmen bring in ex-cellent credentials and will help make up for the loss to gradu-ation of Juana Baribeau, Gabri-

elle Kosziwka and Kali Gillanders. Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, SASK), Shannon MacAulay (Mt. Herbert, PEI), and Cayley Mercer (Exeter, ONT) have seen plenty of time for Hockey Canada on national teams and in selection camps, and will look to build upon those experiences at the collegiate level.

Howe played last season for the Notre Dame AAA Hounds where she served as team captain. She was the 2011 Saskatch-ewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League scoring champion with 69 points (36-33) in 27 games.

A three-year captain for the Warner Warriors (JWHL), MacAulay was also a member of Canada’s U-18 team that won gold at the World Championships. She also participated at Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team selection camp this past August.

The younger sister of Carly Mercer, Cayley Mercer played this past season for the Bluewater Junior Hawks where she was the team captain. She led the team to both a PWHL championship and an Intermediate AA Provincial championship. Mercer, along with Ambrose and MacAu-lay, also won gold at the 2012 U18 World Championships this past January.

CLARKSON WOMEN'S HOCKEY HISTORY

Beginning its 10th year as a Division

I program, Clarkson University Women’s Hockey has enjoyed tre-mendous growth from its fi rst season and is now regarded as one of the top teams in the NCAA.

After a 20-year ab-sence, the University made a full commitment to women’s hockey as the sport was reestablished on campus with the announcement that Clarkson would compete at the Division I level starting with the 2003-04 campaign.

Clarkson’s original women’s hockey team, formed by Ron Frazer '45, played from 1974-1984 compiling a 77-72-3 record through 10 seasons. "Frazer’s Blazers" featured numerous talented players, including Pam Morin ‘76, a leading force for women’s hockey at Clarkson, Kelly Priestley ‘81, an inaugu-ral Clarkson Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, and Cathy Champion-Demers ‘84, a top scorer for the Knights. Fraz-er was chosen for induction into Clarkson’s 2004 HOF while Champion-Demers was a part of the 2007 HOF class.

As a Division I program, the Green and Gold have amassed a 168-120-40 overall record for a winning percentage of .573 through the fi rst nine seasons. Clarkson has skated to seven winning campaigns and has qualifi ed for the ECAC Hockey playoffs in each of its fi rst eight seasons in the competitive con-ference.

The Knights, under head coach Rick See-ley, who would guide the program in its fi rst fi ve years, held their own in that initial season and posted a 16-12-3 overall record against a mixed schedule of Division I foes and elite squads from Division III. Lay-ing the foundation for a

promising future, Clarkson skated a very young lineup featuring 20 freshmen.

Clarkson’s initial NCAA victory was a 2-1 triumph at Niagara on October 18, 2003. The Knights’ fi rst offi cial win at Cheel Arena was a 1-0 shutout of Vermont on October 26 of that opening campaign. Clarkson has enjoyed great success at its 3,000-seat home, posting a 102-42-22 record (.681%) in Potsdam through its fi rst nine seasons.

By qualifying for the 2004-05 ECACHL playoffs in its fi rst year as a member of the 11-team league, Clarkson proved to be a program on the rise in the NCAA Division I ranks. The Golden Knights, who swept Union College 2-1 and 4-0 on October 16-17 at Cheel in its inaugural league games, posted a respectable 13 wins in its second year as a varsity program.

The Green and Gold, who lost seven one-goal games during the year, earned the fi nal league postseason berth with a solid run down the stretch where they won four of their last seven league games. Clarkson clinched its fi rst ever postseason appear-ance when it knocked off Brown University 3-2 in Potsdam on February 19, 2005. The Knights ended the year with a loss at perennial NCAA powerhouse Harvard in the playoffs.

The lone senior on the Clarkson roster, Kristi Shaw '05, a transfer from UNH, completed her two-year career for the Green and Gold and became the Knights' fi rst alumna.

With two years of experience under its belt Clarkson came into its own during the 2005-06 campaign and was ranked among the Top 10 teams in the country throughout the majority of the season. The Knights skated to 22 wins and tied for third in the conference. Highlighting the regular season was a weekend sweep at league powers Harvard (4-3) and Dartmouth (1-0), and

a 2-0 shutout over archrival, number-one ranked St. Lawrence before a record crowd of 1,946 at Cheel Arena on December 2.

The Knights had to travel to Cambridge, MA once again for the ECAC playoffs, and although the Green and Gold eventually lost to Harvard in the fi rst round they were able to force the series to three games by earning their fi rst ever playoff win with a 2-1 overtime triumph over the Crimson on March 4, 2006. Har-vard was able to advance to the championship tournament after edging Clarkson 2-1 in double overtime the next night.

Juniors, captain Lindsay Williams ‘07 and assistant captains Christine Bailkowski ‘07, Emma Madigan ’07 and Ashley Shaidle ’07 led a young Clarkson squad, without any seniors on the roster. The Knights gained the respect from every team they faced for their disciplined, hard-working style of play. The fi rst ever all-star for Clarkson, Kira Hurley ’07 backboned the Knights in goal during their breakout season and earned numerous acco-lades in the process, including second-team All-America and the ECACHL Goaltender of the Year. Williams was honored for her contributions to the community and was a named a fi nal-ist for the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Hurley anchored one of the stingiest defenses in the country and posted an NCAA-high 10 shutouts. She boasted a .937 save percentage and a 1.29 goals against average.

Twelve seniors who formed the cornerstone of the program since its inception closed out their collegiate careers in 2006-07 with an impressive resume and the knowledge in knowing that they established a solid foundation for an emerging program in the NCAA.

The Golden Knights’ Class of 2007 skated to three winning

campaigns in four seasons and helped the Green and Gold com-pile 69 total victories, a notable achievement for a neophyte pro-gram just getting off the ground.

With the seniors providing the leadership, a talented trio of freshmen sparking the offense, and a veteran tandem backstop-ping the Knights’ stingy defensive effort, Clarkson proved once again that it was one of the most competitive teams in Division I in 2006-07. Led by Williams, a three-year captain, and assistant captains Shaidle and Lauren Lubrano ‘07, Clarkson was ranked among the top teams in the nation during a school-record eight-game winning streak in the middle of the season and fi nished with an 18-15-3 overall record, including 11 wins at Cheel Arena. Williams went on to be named a fi nalist once again for Hockey Humanitarian Award and was the recipient of the coveted Sara Devins Award.

The Knights tied for sixth in the ECACHL, regarded as the toughest league in women’s hockey with a 10-10-2 conference mark. Clarkson’s season came to a close in late February when the Knights pushed fi fth-ranked St. Lawrence to the limit in the quarterfi nal round of the league’s playoffs in Canton, NY before falling 3-2 and 3-1 in the series.

Rookies Genevieve Lavoie ‘10, Britney Selina ‘10 and Carlee Eusepi ‘10 led the Knights’ offense. Lavoie, who scored a team-high 23 goals and 36 points, and Eusepi, who tallied 21 points from the blueline, were both named to the ECACHL All-Rookie team. Hurley and Stephanie Hansen ‘07 shared the duties in goals, with both posting three shutouts apiece, and helped the Knights rank among the top defensive squads in the country, allowing only 2.06 goals per game.

Along with Williams, Bailkowski, Hansen, Hurley, Lubrano, Ma-digan, Shaidle, Jessica Finley, Andrea Maluta, Melissa Marshall, Christina Valesente and Carolyn Zidek all closed out their collegiate careers as part of Clarkson’s fi rst senior class.

With a school-record for wins, a Top-10 ranking in the na-tional polls, it’s fi rst ever playoff series victory and its inaugural trip to the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament, Clarkson enjoyed great success in the 2007-08 campaign. Seeley and as-sistant coaches Shannon and Matt Desrosiers established the fi ve-year-old Golden Knight program as one of the best in the country with a young team that relied upon hard work, discipline play, a stingy defensive effort, and opportunistic scoring.

Led by their four seniors, captain Katie Morrison ‘08 and as-sistants Brooke Beazer ‘08, Jessica Cloutier ‘08 and Aman-da Dittmer ‘08, the Knights skated to a 24-9-5 overall record, and fi nished fourth in ECAC Hockey with a 13-6-3 league mark.

The Green and Gold rallied to defeat Princeton in the league’s postseason quarterfi nal round, earning their fi rst victories ever over the Tigers, by winning the best-of-three series 2-1 at Cheel Arena. The fi nest season in Clarkson’s brief history came to a close in the conference semifi nal round as the Knights fell to the top team in the country, Harvard, as the Crimson pulled away for a hard fought win on their home ice at the Bright Hockey Center.

Featuring one of the stingiest defenses in the country, Clark-son was ranked fourth in the nation allowing only 1.42 goals per games. The Knights fi nished second in ECAC Hockey action in scoring defense (1.59). Back boning Clarkson’s strong defen-sive play was a pair of talented freshmen goaltenders, including Lauren Dahm ‘11, who boasted some of the best numbers in the country. Offensively, Clarkson displayed a balanced attack and averaged close to three goals per game. Eleven players scored in double fi gures, including four with over 30 points, and several forwards established new school records. As a sophomore Selina set a new standard for points in a season with 44, including a re-cord 26 assists. Clarkson was the least penalized team in college hockey, averaging just 7.2 minutes per game.

Although Clarkson came up just short in its bid for a sec-ond consecutive appearance in the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament, the Golden Knights still enjoyed a successful season, recording numerous team and individual highlights. Guided by fi rst-year co-head coaches Shannon, who was with the program at its inception, and Matt Desrosiers, a young Clarkson squad with just three seniors on the roster – captain Kimberly McK-enney ‘09, Marie-Jo Gaudet ‘09 and Courtney O’Connor ‘09 - posted a 16-14-6 overall record and placed seventh in ECAC Hockey with a 10-8-4 conference mark.

The Green and Gold were edged out by St. Lawrence in the league’s quarterfi nal series in Canton NY, closing out the most challenging schedule in the program’s six-year history with two

close losses to the nationally-ranked Saints, falling 4-3 in over-time and 2-1.

Highlighting the 2008-09 campaign for the Golden Knights was a two-game sweep at Cheel Arena over Mercyhurst (5-2, 4-2), eventual runners-up for the 2009 NCAA title, a three-point weekend in Potsdam against perennial national powers Harvard (2-0) and Dartmouth (2-2), and a 2-1 regular season triumph at home over St. Lawrence.

Gaudet headlined a respectable showing by Clarkson on the 2008-09 ECAC Hockey All-Star Team by earning fi rst-team ac-colades. Selina and Eusepi were named third-team all-stars, while freshman standout Juana Baribeau ‘12 was selected to ECAC Hockey’s All-Rookie team. Gaudet and Selina became the charter members of Clarkson Century Club by surpassing the 100-point career mark during the season.

After growing into a solid Division I program through its fi rst six years in the NCAA, the Clarkson University Women’s Hock-ey team joined the nation’s elite in 2009-10 with its best season ever. Guided by co-head coaches Shannon and Matt Desrosiers, Clarkson skated to a 23-12-5 overall record and just missed out on claiming the ECAC Hockey regular season title with a 14-5-3 league mark.

The Golden Knights, guided by Selina and Eusepi were regard-ed among the top teams in the country throughout the season, ranked as high as number two in the national polls, and made the program’s fi rst ever NCAA Tournament appearance, qualify-ing as an at-large selection in the prestigious eight-team tourney.

The Green and Gold enjoyed a memorable postseason run, starting with its fi rst ever playoff victories over archrival St. Law-rence in the ECAC quarterfi nal round. After dispatching the

Saints 2-1 (5-0, 1-2, 4-1) in the opening series at Cheel Arena, the Knights took down perennial powerhouse Harvard with a 3-2 win in the conference semifi nals held in Potsdam. Clarkson came up just short in its bid for the ECAC Tournament Championship, falling to Cornell 4-3 in overtime in Ithaca.

The Knights made an impressive showing in their fi rst NCAA Tournament game, rallying from a 2-0 defi cit to force overtime against Minnesota as Baribeau scored the tying goal on a shot from center ice with just 1:44 remaining in regulation. Although Clarkson fell in the extra session 3-2 on the Gophers’ home ice, the Knights left with their heads held high.

Selina was named ECAC Hockey’s Best Defensive-Forward, while Eusepi was honored at the conference’s Best Defensive-Defenseman. Dahm joined Selina and Eusepi as a second-team ECAC Hockey All-Star. The Knights’ leading scorer, Dominique Thibault ‘10 was named a third-team league all-star. Seniors Ashleigh Moorehead and Tegan Schroeder also played key roles in Clarkson’s most successful season.

A young Clarkson squad overcame a slow start to the 2010-11 campaign, matured as the season progressed, and gained ex-perience and confi dence to emerge as a solid team in ECAC Hockey. The Golden Knights came within one goal of advanc-ing to the their second consecutive appearance in the semifi nal round of the conference’s postseason tournament. The Knights’ season came to an end with a 4-3 overtime loss at 9th-ranked Dartmouth in Game 3 of the league’s quarterfi nal series.

Clarkson, which went 8-5-3 in its fi nal 16 games, posted a 14-17-6 overall record and claimed sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 10-8-4 league mark. Dahm and forward Me-lissa Waldie ‘11 established themselves as two of the best to ever play for the Knights, setting new Clarkson records. Dahm posted a career mark for wins in goal with 49, while Waldie be-came the Knights’ all-time leading goal scorer with 67. Classmate Daris Tendler set the program’s record for most career games played at 150. Along with Caitlin Oleksa and Courtney Ol-

son, the Class of 2011 compiled 77 wins over four years at Clarkson.

The Knights fresh-men developed into a standout class and boasted two of the team’s leading scor-ers in Jamie Lee Rattray and Carly Mercer with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Erica Howe emerged as Clarkson’s number one goaltender down the stretch and fi nished her rookie campaign with 10 wins.

With its most victories ever in ECAC Hockey play and a 20-win mark through mid-February, Clarkson enjoyed one of its best regular seasons ever in the nine-year history of the pro-gram. Unfortunately the Golden Knights could not continue their momentum in postseason action and came up just sort in the opening round of the conference playoffs to end the 2011-12 campaign with a 22-10-5 overall record. Clarkson placed third in the league standings with a 15-5-2 ECAC Hockey mark. The well respected Class of 2012 – Captain Katelyn Ptolemy, assistant captain Danielle Boudreau, Baribeau, Kali Gillanders and Gabrielle Kosziwka – provided the leadership for the Green and Gold while a talented group of underclassmen emerged as standout Division I players, giving Clarkson a promising future.

Howe was among the best in the country between the pipes and was selected the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Yearto highlight the Knights’ individual honors. Rattray, who averaged 1.15 points per game, was a nominee for the Patsy Kazmier Award as the top player in Women’s Division I Hockey. In her second collegiate season, Mercer led the Green and Gold in scoring with 40 points, including 26 assists. Danielle Skirrow, who was among the national leaders in power-play goals with 10, and Hailey Wood, Clarkson’s leading scorer from the blueline with 24 points, enjoyed solid junior campaigns.

Baribeau closed out her career as the Knights’ third all-time leading scorer with 118 (62-56) career points..

CLARKSON REMEMBERS RONALD FRAZER '45 "FATHER OF WOMEN'S HOCKEY"

With women's sports emerging at the collegiate level in the mid-1970s, Ron Frazer started Clarkson's original intercollegiate wom-en's hockey program with nothing but true "walk-ons." Frazer, the "Father" of Women's Hockey at Clarkson, along with his wife

Doris, played a highly signifi cant role in establishing the foundation for the Golden Knights' current Division I women's hockey team.Drawing from the 184 women undergraduates on campus, Frazer gathered 17 student-athletes for Clarkson's fi rst women's team in

the winter of 1974. The Knights won their fi rst game with an impressive 7-0 victory over Potsdam with senior center Joan Carroll '75 scoring the fi rst of her fi ve goals just 22 seconds after the opening faceoff. Clarkson, which also posted wins over Colgate and Boston University during that inaugural season, fi nished with a 5-2 record in the 1974-75 campaign.

During his nine-year tenure guiding "Frazer's Blazers" the Green and Gold compiled a 68-64-3 record, but more importantly provided Clarkson student-athletes with plenty of sportsmanship, camaraderie and lasting memories. The Knights' best season was in 1977-78 when the team fi nished with nine consecutive wins to post an 11-5 mark.

Frazer was a 1945 Clarkson mechanical engineering graduate and went on to Iowa State for his PhD in industrial engineering and economics. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, he skated at forward on the Clarkson men's ice hockey teams during the 1942-43 and 1943-44 seasons under coach Jack Roos, recording 23 goals and 10 assists through 15 games. Before attending Clarkson he was a leading scorer for Nepean High School and the Ottawa Junior Senators.

A 2004 Clarkson Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee and a Centennial Professor in the School of Business, Frazer passed away on Sep-tember 6, 2011.

CLARKSON ATHLETIC HALL of FAMEThree members of Clarkson’s original Women’s Hockey program, Kelly Priestley ’81, Cathy Champion-Demers ’84 and Ron Frazer '45 have been inducted into
