As Medical Director of the Emergency Department since 1998, Dr. Buxton has witnessed the completion of a major expansion project, staffing changes and overtaking management of the emergency department. “In the past decade and a half, I’ve been through almost every change that has hap- pened at RVH,” he says. Dr. Buxton and his family have leſt Renfrew for a year to live in Paris, and to allow his three sons—ages 9, 8, and 6—to attend school there. His sabbatical is prompted out of a need to explore the world and give his family an experience of a lifetime. “I think we all need to step out of our comfort zone occasionally and change our view of the world. And it’s particularly important for kids.” He won’t be practising medicine in France, but plans to take time reading, writing and hopefully doing some bicycling through the French countryside. “It has been a great job and a pleasure to go to work every day,” he says, and men- tions that the many accolades of the orga- nization are well deserved and trickle down to the dedication of the professionals on the front lines every day. His plan is to return to Renfrew next September and to resume practising medicine at RVH, but perhaps not in the same high-demand capacity as before. He leaves the role knowing the depart- ment is in good hands and that Dr. Kristian Davis is going to do his thing in his own way. “I think he’ll have a few more creative ideas than I’ve had—I’m quite a conser- vative guy. Kristian has good ideas, and perhaps he’s going to do things a little dif- ferently than me.” “We’re all sad to see Dr. Buxton go and we’re really going to miss him,” says Kim Dick, Clinical Nurse Manager of the ER, who is looking forward to a brand new chapter in the ER Department history with a doctor who thoroughly understands the daily challenges of the unit. “Dr. Davis has been here for a long time and is well respected by the nurses and rest of the staff at RVH.” Dr. Collins stepped down as Chief of Staff also this spring, but will continue to be an active physician in our community — family practice and obstetrics — working out of his clinic across from the hospital. He has acted as the liaison between RVH’s physicians and Board of Directors for the past 18 years. Dr. Collins was rec- ognized for his contributions at the June board meeting and presented with a giſt of a beautiful reclining chair that was donated in his name to the Obstetrics Unit. “When there’s a problem or any type of issue with a physician that needs resolu- tion, he’s one to do it,” explains RVH CEO and President Randy Penney. “He’s been very diplomatic all the while retaining the respect of his colleagues.” Dr. Collins addressed the volunteer members of the board mentioning that he’s been fortunate to work with such competent and collegial individuals from our community throughout the nearly two decades of his tenure. “All of the boards have been receptive to any of our ideas, thoughts and concerns and been very approachable. “I’m handing off the torch to a very capa- ble and talented individual in Dr. Radke,” he added, giving a nod to his successor. Dr. Steven Radke has been practis- ing medicine in Renfrew since 2005 and divides his time between his patients at his family practice in the RVH Professional Building and in the hospital Emergency Department. “Dr. Collins has provided excellent lead- ership at RVH. I look forward to the chal- lenge in my new role, and am excited to be working with a such a wonderful team of professionals to deliver outstanding health care to our community,” says Dr. Radke. Dr. John Collins (leſt) and Dr. Max Buxton have stepped down from their roles as RVH’s Chief of Staff and Medical Director of the Emergency Department, respectively.

Max Buxton and Dr. John Collins as in 2012 they both made the announcement to step down from their duties assisting the daily operations at RVH.

As Medical Director of the Emergency Department since 1998, Dr. Buxton has witnessed the completion of a major expansion project, staffing changes and overtaking management of the emergency department.

“In the past decade and a half, I’ve been through almost every change that has hap-pened at RVH,” he says. Dr. Buxton and his family have left Renfrew for a year to live in Paris, and to allow his three sons—ages 9, 8, and 6—to attend school there.

His sabbatical is prompted out of a need to explore the world and give his family an experience of a lifetime.

“I think we all need to step out of our comfort zone occasionally and change our view of the world. And it’s particularly important for kids.”

He won’t be practising medicine in France, but plans to take time reading, writing and hopefully doing some bicycling through the French countryside.

“It has been a great job and a pleasure to go to work every day,” he says, and men-tions that the many accolades of the orga-nization are well deserved and trickle down to the dedication of the professionals on the front lines every day.
