We also are planning a knitting retreat to the Outer Banks for March 8-10, 2013. The theme is Sock Yarn by the Sea and our focus is (but not limited to) classes and projects using sock yarn. May was a huge success with Michelle Miller’s Fickle Knitter Classes, MadTosh May, the C2Knits Trunk Show, the Miley Tee KAL and the Adirondack Shawl KAL. The projects are coming in every day and WOW! You all are awesome knitters! Many of us have started the Color Affection Shawl taking advantage of the MadTosh Sales events. Keep those needles clicking! The color combina-tions are outrageous! June brings us our Vodka Lemonade Knit-A-Long. This adorable cardigan from Baby Cocktails is a breeze to knit. Now through June 7, Zara from Filatura Di Crosa will be on sale at 20 percent off. This yarn is perfect for the KAL Cardigan. June 9 is Knit-In-Public Day at The Yarn Club. Bring a lawn chair, a snack to share, a refreshing drink and lots and lots of fiber. Knit, crochet or spin; everyone is welcome! Please bring a few items for Show & Tell. More details are on our Ravelry Group. June 16, join us for the Rippled Wrap Crocheted Shawl Class. If you don’t crochet, but really want to learn, please join us Tuesday’s from 5:30-7 p.m. for our Beginner Knit or Crochet Classes. June 23 starts the Cat Bohrdi Sock class. Hazel has lots of fun up her sleeve for the custom fit socks designed by Cat Bohrdi in her book, Footprints. Details for all classes and events can be found here. For July we are planning a Tank-A-Long. This is similar to a KAL, but we will all be knitting a cool and comfortable summer tee or tank. Promotions are in the works, so watch Ravelry and Facebook for details. Happy Knitting, Andrea

Happy summer, everybody! We're celebrating the arrival of hot weather, humidity and lazy days on the beach in style over here, and you're more than welcome to join us! Looking for a way to lighten the load while still indulging in your favorite hobby? Try some of our smaller projects, sized perfectly for warm weather. Try Marian's Log Cabin Pillow class and have something cuddly ready in time for football season. Or try Socks on Saturdays, where you can conquer your fear of little yarn and tiny needles on weekend time. There's even the chance to perfect your technique and get a better grasp of duplicate stitch! Learn this handy way to add a bit of color to something without bobbins, twisting or using two hands!

We're hosting a Pampered Chef party on Tuesday, June 5, at 6:30 pm. Join us for summertime nibbles, recipe ideas, and the chance to enhance your kitchen AND yarn stash in one trip! Call the store for more details. There are fun things coming up in the fall – exciting things – and to get ourselves charged up for it we're plan-ning on taking some time off now (while the weather's good)! From now until just after Labor Day, we'll be closed on Wednesdays. Now wait … wait … before you get all nervous, we'll still be open regular hours from Monday through Wednesday, extended hours on Thursday ('til 8!) and Friday and Saturday as always. We'll be fishin'… you'll be knitting… and we'll see you the rest of the week! And remember, as always – we love our KnitWits and couldn't do it without ya!

By Chris Goudeau I attended the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society’s annual volunteer luncheon on April 19. Among those from our group who were listed as knitters were Margaret Faust, Helen Prestipino, Wanda Gunnoe and me. I brought yarn to our May Guild meeting that the Society gave us for our members to knit or crochet baby blankets. You also can use your own yarn. The blankets should be 36” x 36.” Do NOT mix pink and blue together; you can mix yellow and pink, pink and white, blue and white or just have one solid color. Do not attach fringes or make blankets with large holes. Please bring your blankets to a meeting in a Ziploc bag, along with the form that was included with the yarn. If you need a form I will have them for you. A new charity organization, Hugs from the Heart, has requested 8-inch squares. You can knit, crochet or loom-weave them in any yarn and in any pattern. Please make sure your yarn is soft and cuddly as the individual squares will be joined with other donated squares to make blankets for hospice patients. It will take 30 squares to make a single full-size blanket. Andrea at The Yarn Club has agreed to be our contact person for them. Bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. Remember to sign the Charity Knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at [email protected].

The president opened the May 2012 meeting at 7:10 p.m. by welcoming the guests and the new member.

The minutes of the April 2012 meeting were approved.

The treasurer gave the treasurer’s report advising the Guild’s bank balance is $2,970.00

The vice president advised we have a tentative date of 11/3/12 for a weekend of knitting technique classes led by Nancy of Nancy’s Knit Knacks.

The charity chair advised that she, her mother and aunt attended the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Volunteer Recognition luncheon. The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society requests blankets for newborn babies. The blankets should be 36” x 36” finished, without fringe and without large holes that could catch babies’ fingers. The Society requests we do not mix blue and pink in the same blanket. We can use other colors with pink or blue, but not mix blue and pink in the same blanket. Please bring any blankets to a meeting. The charity chair will get the blankets to the Society. In addition, the Virginia Beach SPCA seeks pet blankets. The Yarn Club is collecting knitted and crocheted squares from any type of yarn for the “Hugs from the Heart” blanket project to support the All Heart Home Health & Hospice charity. The only specification for the squares is that they are 8” x 8” finished.

The president advised we will sponsor two opportunities to participate in the World Wide Knit in Public event this year. The Guild will meet on Sunday, June 10, at 12:00 p.m. at the café at Nordstrom at MacArthur Center for a WWKIP session. The Guild will meet again on June 15 at the Tides baseball stadium to watch a baseball game and knit in public. The cost for the baseball tickets is $11.00 per ticket. Guild members and family members are welcome. Please bring your money for the baseball tickets to the June meeting.

The president advised the Guild seeks volunteers to write articles about other members or to volunteer to have an article written about them in the Guild’s newsletter.

Sue Von Ohlsen, owner, The Knitting Corner, advised the shop offers a 30 percent sale on all Ella Rae yarns in May, 2012. \In addition, the shop is offering a number of classes. You can find the class schedule on the shop’s website.

Beverly Boler reported The Yarn Club has classes scheduled for late spring. You can find the class schedule on the shop’s website.

Kymberly Widick, Thirty-One consultant, gave a brief presentation regarding Thirty-One bags suited for knitters and crafters. Kimberly advertises in the Guild newsletter. She will donate 5 percent of the sales from TKGV members to the Guild. In 2012, she has donated $20.00 to date to the Guild.

The president advised the Guild will offer a knitting help clinic before every monthly meeting. The clinic will start at 6:30 p.m. before the monthly meeting.

The president reminded the Guild the knitting contest entries are due by May 12. The president encourages all members to submit an entry to the contest. The contest winners will be announced at the June meeting. The June program will be led by the contest judges who will discuss the contest results, the judging process and what members can do to prepare contest entries.

Sue Von Ohlsen, Lora Marin and Linda Johnson each manned tables to provide a cast-on techniques clinic. Members were able to watch and practice three different and useful cast-on methods. Thank you to Sue, Lora and Linda for your great instruction!

The Guild enjoyed reviewing the Kentucky Derby Knitting Hat contest entries. Linda Johnson won the Kentucky Derby Knitting Hat contest for her hat that contained all the yarn, needles and notions necessary to complete a knitted project.

The Guild enjoyed the Ways and Means Committee raffle yarns based on a Mother’s Day theme, courtesy of KnitWits.

The Guild enjoyed the show and share time.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Ka tie Gerwien
