WELCOME TO
THE 6TH ANNUAL WAVE RISING SERIES
WHITE WAVE is thrilled to present the sixth annual WAVE RISING SERIES, featuring
24 dance companies in six different programs celebrating fresh and contemporary
choreography. This showcase of some of the worlds best and brightest emergingdancemakers furthers WHITE WAVEs commitment to nd, nurture, and broaden
horizons for extraordinary artists.
WHITE WAVEs Artistic Director Young Soon Kim founded the WAVE RISING SERIES
in 2006 as a platform for companies who may not have the resources to stage full
productions of new dance works. Tightly curated by Ms. Kim and a six-person panel
of prominent dance gures, the festival offers rising choreographers the opportunity
to present their work on a large scale, often for the rst time, alongside a group ofinvited companies from among the most visionary names in contemporary dance.
The WAVE RISING SERIES, which started by presenting local companies, now
features innovative dancemakers from around the world. The New York Times wrote
in 2008, (The WAVE RISING SERIES presents) a broad variety of work. Tickets are
cheap and dancing plentiful; its a good mix.
As with prior festivals, the SERIES roster includes both rising and eminent dancemakers
from across the United States and beyond: two stellar Korean companies and arenowned ensemble from Israel will be on this years bill.
The WAVE RISING SERIES is presented only a few weeks following WHITE WAVEs
11th Anniversary DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, which began with a sparkling GALA
Opening Night on September 22nd. For the following three days, we presented 15
spectacular dance programs at WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater, each featuring up
to eight choreographers/companies per hour. The DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL featured
works by more than 120 rising dancemakers from throughout the United States
and beyond, with troupes coming from as far away as Canada, Italy, and Japan to
perform on our stage.

Direction, Choreography and Text by Johannes Wieland
Danced by Jon Guymon, Evan Mohn, Kristin Osler, and Beth Grifth
Music by Barry White, Phonophani, Bert Kaempfert and many more
Sound Design by Jon Guymon
Rehearsal Director / Dramaturg by Joy Kellman
From the Director: newyou was developed through the collaborative efforts of manyartists. The dancers were an integral part of the research and facilitated the outcome of an
enormous pool of ideas which resulted in a very vibrant and creative dialogue. I would like to
thank them for their trust, enthusiasm, and commitment.
newyou explores my fascination with deceit towards achieving a positive state we call
happiness. The recalculation of our conscious and unconscious experiences seems to be a
crucial survival tool. It ultimately promises internal renewal. Is the presence of denial and its
diversied outcomes necessarily a bad thing?
The full version of newyou will be performed in December at the Cunningham Theater.
For information, please visit www.johanneswieland.org
An excerpt of newyou was created and rst performed at The Yard, a colony for performing
artists in Chillmark, MA, as part of the Company Residency.
newyou is made possible through the generous support from the New York State Council
on the Arts. Additional support provided by Goethe Institut, Deutsches Haus, New York
University and German Consulate General New York.

Kei Tsuruharatani and Yin Yue
Music by Scanner, Verka Serduchka, Ganger and Pangaea
HYPOMANIAC!, created for the 2011 WAVE RISING SERIES, is an abstract, stark and yet
deeply personal examination of mania and its various states of manifestation in the human
mind; how it affects relationships; and what happens when not managed efciently. The
dynamic cast of ve will pull you in and take you for a ride through the barely-navigable
pathways of the subconscious psyche.

Da.Da.Dance Project (Philadelphia, PA)
Prey and Predator & Q&A
A duet repertory company inspired by the Dada movement, Da
Da Dance Project was founded by Eun Jung Choi and Guillermo
Ortega Tanus in New York City. In the SPIRIT of Dadaism, we
challenge conventional notions of art making with travesty,
absurdity, and physical authenticity; we constantly question
aesthetic ideals. Drawing from a wealth of experiences in theater,
music, poetry, multi-media, visual/commercial art, various
dance styles from traditional to cutting- edge to street
dance to improvisation, we continuously seek to deliver a
uniquely expressive vocabulary that communicates to people
and reveals our eccentricity. The themes that we like to explore frequently include aspects of ones
personality, social and emotional behavior and intelligence, with a curious mixture of the comic and
tragic. Using the diverse cultural and ethnic composition of our group, we seek to promote education,
social awareness of current global interests and issues, and diversity through the expression of art.
